On this episode we speak to Jessica Morrison who reached out to us about the suspicious death of her brother Robert Morrison. Jessica believes his unattended death may have been murder, she writes:Hi there. My name is Jessica, my brother, Rob was murdered on or before 11.23.2019 in Millinocket, Maine. Upon receiving the medical examiner's report, my mom, dad and I went to the (then) Millinocket PD. We were soon kicked out and told never to comeback or call, by then chief Craig Worster.Who may I add was dating the mother of the next person whom was shot (in the same house my brother was renting) just a couple months after my brother. I also need to let you know my brother called me approximately 2 months prior to his death and stated to me that he was going into hiding, “if something happens to him then so and so needs to be questioned by the police”.Thank you for your time. ~Jess

A veces, la mejor manera de cumplir la Gran Comisión no es llegar primero, sino movilizar a quienes pueden ir más lejos. Welcome to this special episode of China Compass, from Macau in the South China Sea. After mentioning my appearance this morning on Crosspolitic, I introduce a new series called “Wangyi’s Prison Pulpit” by looking at what he wrote regarding True Freedom during seasons of persecution: Wangyi wrote: “I hope God uses me, by means of first losing my personal freedom, to tell those who have deprived me of my personal freedom that there is an authority higher than their authority, and that there is a freedom that they cannot restrain, a freedom that fills the church of the crucified and risen Jesus Christ.” Next, I share a few fascinating details about the little city-state of Macau: Macau: Las Vegas of the East, Reclaimed Land, Longest Bridge, Most Dense City, etc Third, I talk about “The Legacy of Pastor Lucky”, who died January 20, 2007: Read more at China Call Substack: https://open.substack.com/pub/chinacall/p/the-legacy-of-pastor-lucky "Pastor Lucky has been obsessed with China all his life. No matter where he serves, he always has an unsolvable Chinese complex. When China just opened up in the early 1980s, he went to mainland China to preach the gospel to his own flesh and blood, build churches, and train preachers… Morrison was the first Christian missionary to come to China. He served in China for 27 years, translated the Chinese Bible, and later died in Macau. Pastor Ji often took his friends to see his cemetery because he felt that Morrison loved China. The scripture engraved on Morrison's tombstone comes from Revelation 14:13: "From now on, blessed are the dead in the Lord. Yes, says the Spirit, they will rest from their labors, for the fruit of their works will follow them." I believe that Pastor Ji, who has worked silently for the gospel of China throughout his life, is also remembered by the Lord." Finally, I talk about China’s first missionary, Robert Morrison, and his book, The Memoirs of William Milne, which I released today on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DJBRN3FB?ref_=pe_93986420_774957520 I first stumbled on the relatively unknown story of William Milne when researching Robert Morrison, one of the more famous missionaries in China's history. However, Milne was Morrison's equal in many ways. They served in many of the same places (Canton, Macau, Malacca). They seemed to share the same level of fluency in Chinese. Both were Bible translators, and they corrected each other's work. One possibility as to why Milne is lesser known is that he died so young, yet Morrison lived to see the Chinese Bible through to completion. When I found Morrison's edition of Milne's Memoirs, I knew immediately that this was something I wanted to both read and republish. In reality, people are more likely to read about Milne if Morrison commends him to them. The book also turned out to be an exciting window into the minds of both men. There is an intimacy to this work that cannot be reproduced in a normal biography. This book imperfectly (it is representative, not exhaustive, of his words and actions) tells the story of William Milne’s family and his sacrificial efforts to plant the Gospel in hostile soil by translating, printing, and shipping (literally) God’s Word far and wide throughout the Chinese diaspora. Ironically, Milne's one relatively well-known quote about the difficulty of learning Chinese is not found in these pages, and so I share it here. He stated that learning Chinese is. . . “a work for men with bodies of brass, lungs of steel, heads of oak, hands of spring-steel, eyes of eagles, hearts of apostles, memories of angels, and lives of Methuselah!”

With a focus on Robert Morrison, Protestant Missionaries in China: Robert Morrison and Early Sinology (U Notre Dame Press, 2024) evaluates the role of nineteenth-century British missionaries in the early development of the cross-cultural relationship between China and the English-speaking world. As one of the first generation of British Protestant missionaries, Robert Morrison went to China in 1807 with the goal of evangelizing the country. His mission pushed him into deeper engagement with Chinese language and culture, and the exchange flowed both ways as Morrison—a working-class man whose firsthand experiences made him an “accidental expert”—brought depictions of China back to eager British audiences. Author Jonathan A. Seitz proposes that, despite the limitations imposed by the orientalism impulse of the era, Morrison and his fellow missionaries were instrumental in creating a new map of cross-cultural engagement that would evolve, ultimately, into modern sinology. Engaging and well researched, Protestant Missionaries in China explores the impact of Morrison and his contemporaries on early sinology, mission work, and Chinese Christianity during the three decades before the start of the Opium Wars. Byung Ho Choi is a Ph.D. candidate in the History and Ecumenics program at Princeton Theological Seminary, concentrating in World Christianity and history of religions. His research focuses on the indigenous expressions of Christianities found in Southeast Asia, particularly Christianity that is practiced in the Muslim-dominant archipelagic nation of Indonesia. More broadly, he is interested in history and the anthropology of Christianity, complexities of religious conversion and social identity, inter-religious dialogue, ecumenism, and World Christianity. We check out an article from The Remnant by Robert Morrison about the Lord allowing evil so that good may come of it.
More than 200 years ago, Robert Morrison had a dream to get the Bible into the most populated nation on earth, but that dream was said to be unattainable. Robert Morrison dared to do it anyway. Now, in our latest book 'Bury Me In China', read for the first time how Morrison gave the ultimate sacrifice to translate, print, smuggle, and distribute the entire Chinese Bible inside China – how he lost friends and loved ones, buried two children, a wife, and eventually died on the mission field, thousands of miles away from the land of his birth.
Robert Morrison was a cross-cultural missionary pioneer who changed the trajectory of Christianity in China forever. He planted a foothold in China and paved the way for every Protestant believer in China today, yet very little has ever been written about him – until now. Eugene's latest book is the first detailed biography written about Robert Morrison in over a hundred years and maybe the most comprehensive ever!

On this episode we speak to Jessica Morrison who reached out to us about the suspicious death of her brother Robert Morrison. Jessica believes his unattended death may have been murder, she writes: Hi there. My name is Jessica, my brother, Rob was murdered on or before 11.23.2019 in Millinocket, Maine. Upon receiving the medical examiner's report, my mom, dad and I went to the (then) Millinocket PD. We were soon kicked out and told never to comeback or call, by then chief Craig Worster. Who may I add was dating the mother of the next person whom was shot (in the same house my brother was renting) just a couple months after my brother. I also need to let you know my brother called me approximately 2 months prior to his death and stated to me that he was going into hiding, “if something happens to him then so and so needs to be questioned by the police”. Honestly I've yet to take the time to write the timeline of events in which I was informed no one would take me seriously until. Thank you for your time. ~Jess Was it murder? We will let you decide as there are many reasons for Jessica to believe foul play was involved. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/locatingthelost/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/locatingthelost/support

After serving as a gospel worker in western China for ten years, Dr. Pam Arlund now serves on the International Leadership Team for All Nations International, training and sending the next generation of missionaries. God called her to the unreached in China through examples of great missionaries like Hudson Taylor and Robert Morrison. Pam had never left the U.S. before she moved to China. She trusted the Lord would protect her and guide her in building relationships with local people. Like many missionaries, she went through different emotions and difficulties. Yet, her obedience in difficult seasons allowed her to develop a deeper relationship with Jesus. Listen as Pam shares some of her experience on the field, and how that influenced the way she trains gospel workers today. She will also introduce her new book, Stick Figures Save the World, which explains how simple drawings can help anyone be a witness for Christ. Pam will also talk about the responsibility of sending missionaries to hard and dangerous places—places where Christian persecution is intense. Finally, Pam shares how we can pray for missionaries we know and encourage them as they persevere in the Lord's call on their life.

Robert Morrison, MD is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Dr. Morrison received his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indiana, IN. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Colorado. Dr. Morrison went on to complete his fellowship in infectious diseases at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. Dr. Morrison's career spans from serving in the US Army for 20 years and as the chief of medicine and program director for an army training hospital, to his current role as a clinician educator in the Department of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center. What happens when we view ourselves as the leaders of the system—as opposed to working for it? Dr. Robert Morrison believes this is an antidote for physician burnout, and encourages us to shift our perspective. “We have got to be the leaders. The system won't lead us,” says Dr. Morrison. He also reminds us of the importance of doing the right thing: The right thing for the patient is the right thing for everyone else, always. It is important to align the factors of healthcare to benefit the patient—without ever sacrificing their needs. In the words of Sir William Osler “We begin with the patient, stay with the patient, and end with the patient.” Pearls of Wisdom: 1. Everything begins and ends with the patient. In the words of Sir William Osler, “We begin with the patient, stay with the patient, and end with the patient.” 2. We can better avoid burnout when we view ourselves as leading the system, rather than working for it. 3. If we want to do the right thing, sometimes we need to think outside the box and align the needs of the institution and businessmen without sacrificing the needs of our patients.
