Who told Ronnie Drew, Shane McGowan, Tom Waits or Lisa O'Neill they could sing? They are not singers in the classical sense, but they can hold a tune and, more importantly, tell a story that engages an audience. Good communicators have all types of voices, accents and varying levels of education, yet you want to hear from them and engage with them. "Use the talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best" Henry Van Dyke Think about your favourite singers; they are probably not your partner's favourites. I know that over the dinner table in our house, we have frequent discussions about the music playing in the background of our conversations. I persist with my choices, and thankfully, if people do not like the singer or the song, it will not be long before another track rolls in, thanks to streaming services. In the same way, I have potential clients who do not want to hear the message I want to deliver to their audience. So, I must choose my audience, knowing that my message and style will not resonate with everyone. Thankfully, enough people like my coaching and training style, which is about building confidence by pointing out what they do well when speaking to an audience. When I do this, people will try a little harder and be prepared to take risks and grow in the process. P.S. Everyone can be a good communicator in the same way that everyone can sing or hold a tune, given support and encouragement. The third and last podcast I am sharing with people to mark Shane's passing. Here, we talk about the music that moved him - the likes of Lou Reed, Ronnie Drew, Hendrix, Elvis, Coletrane, etc - poetry in song form and his belief that Smokey Robinson is a better song poet than Dylan. Oh, yeah, Shane also insists that intellect is overrated and that most rock critics get it wrong! Excuse me while I disappear!

Kevin chats to Phelim Drew the celebrated Son of Ronnie Drew
On this episode Simon K speaks to Irish singer/songwriter George MurphyGeorge Murphy is an Irish singer songwriter who hails from the Dublin suburb of Beaumount. He exploded onto the Irish music scene after his memorable appearances on the Irish television show “You're a Star”. Just out of secondary school at the age of 17 he very quickly took over the Irish music scene, signing to Sony Ireland for his debut album ‘Dreamed A Dream' which went straight to No.1 in the Irish charts. The album eventually went on to gain triple Platinum status. George had made a big impact with insiders on the Irish Music scene, Phil Coulter was quoted as saying that George “Is the most exciting vocal find in Ireland”, The late Ronnie Drew was quoted saying “A voice beyond his years”, Peggy Seeger was quoted saying “A very honest approach to the songs, kept them true to their Origin” and Hotpress magazine described him at the time as “A serious contender”.George enjoyed a lot of success in the early part of his career playing a lot of top festivals and venues in Ireland. In 2006 George went on to release his 2nd album “So The story goes” and the title track got to No.7 in the Irish Singles Chart. That same year he played O2 in the Park and shared the stage with Brian McFadden who was making his debut as a solo artist after leaving Westlife. He decided to embark on a small tour in America where he released his 3rd album “The Ballad of Archie Thompson”, featuring folk legends John Sheahan and Barney McKenna of the Dubliners. For personal reasons George came back to Ireland in 2013, he had grown a little tired of the road and felt that he had lost some motivation. A dark time was to follow and as he said himself “It's a tough life being on the road as an artist, it's full of ups and downs, the highs are very high but the lows are very low”.Fortunately, it didn't take George too long to get back on his feet, he started taking writing his own material more seriously and began playing small pubs, clubs and small music venues trying out some of his new material. In 2015 George signed a new management deal with 10 music Management and then went on to sign a new record deal with Trad Nua. When Finbar's lad, Martin Furey, left the High Kings, they immediately turned to George Murphy to fill the void. Now after 18 months of audience and critical acclaim, and still only 29, George has decided to return to his roots, and with his own band, The Rising Sons, and will tour extensively in 2019/2020.Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/georgemurphymusic/?hl=enSpotify:https://open.spotify.com/artist/4QqYJChcAFcHbimTWMnf7gSoundcloud:https://soundcloud.com/georgemurphyofficialFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/GeorgeMurphyMusicThe Rising sons: https://www.facebook.com/therisingsonsirl

Welcome to Episode 29 with this festive Punks In Pubs special. Liam talks to the Flogging Molly ringmaster; Dave King. Dave kindly gave up some of his time, even though he was feeling a little under the weather (heads up, you can hear him chewing on a throat sweet at the start - so if that kind of sensual noise isn't your thing then maybe skip the first few moments of the pod). It wouldn't be Christmas without presents, and booze. Liam brings both. Liam and Dave talk Punk Rock, and Dave talks about one of his music heroes Ronnie Drew of The Dubliners. Dave talks about moving to L.A. and then finding himself becoming an illegal immigrant. This kept him in America for eight years and unable to see his mum - Dave shares a heartbreaking story on the subject matter. Their performances showcase new interpretations of old songs alongside original self penned tunes and new contemporary songs that are entirely at home in the tradition. Out of this combination they have developed a sound that is both familiar and fresh. Strong believers in letting the music tradition live and breathe through sensitive interpretation, Vicki and Jonny allow the melody to sing without any constraints. Be entranced by the haunting nyckelharpa, amazed at the cow horn (one of the worlds earliest communication devices) and meet some of the bagpipes that didn’t come from Scotland. --- 10:04 "Ann am Baile Ri'oghail Dhaibhidh (Once In David's Royal City)" by The Barra MacNeilsfrom The Christmas Album Canada’s Celtic ambassadors! Compared to the Pogues with a frontman Kyf Brewer who sings like Ronnie Drew with a cold, the band has garnered many a dedicated fan. Its not uncommon to hear the audience bellow "Joooose!" as the band takes the stage. --- 22:20 "Always Believe" by Celtic Cross from Single Out of New York City, Celtic Cross is the legendary seven-piece band fronted by Kathleen Fee, a talented singer-songwriter and her brothers John on accordion & Kenny Vesey on fiddle. They are joined by a group of accomplished and skilled NYC players Wally Ensor on guitar, Pat Dineen on bass/keys, Frankie McCormick on mandolin/banjo, and Ryan Cavan on drums. Products of Irish parents, traditional Irish music roots, and American pop radio, Celtic Cross puts it all together in a very different way than what you will hear from most Celtic acts. The band’s music tells great stories using the traditional on top of sassy pop, alt-country and funk playing. They are a band’s band around the NYC Irish scene and will remind you of Fleetwood Mac or the B-52s with a heavy dose of Saw Doctors or Stockton’s Wing. --- 26:47 "Logs to Burn" by Golden Bough from Winter's Dance An Old World carol states, “Good fortune attend each merry man's friend to do the best that he may, forgetting all wrongs in carol and song to drive the cold winter away.” With that in mind, Golden Bough has created 3 volumes of Christmas/Holiday music, incorporating Old World Carols and other Celtic songs of Christmas and Winter with their own compositions, written especially for the Yuletide season. Out of Modesto, CA, there are no new comers to the current Celtic trend, Golden Bough (founded in 1980) has been bringing their Winter Concerts to family audiences far and wide. These modern-day minstrels have traveled the world over performing their own brand of Celtic music, drawn from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, The Isle of Man, French Brittany and even Galicia (in Spain). --- If you're in a Celtic band and you have recorded Christmas music, then please submit through at www.4Celts.com.
