In today's episode, Haylie Pomroy sits down with Dr. Aristo Vojdani, one of the most cited immunologists in the world, with over 50 years of clinical research and more than 200 published studies. He opens with the data that most doctors have not talked openly about: anti-nuclear antibody positivity in the so-called healthy population has risen from roughly 1% in 1970 to an estimated 20% today. He explains why better testing is not the reason, and what environmental exposures, heavy metals, viral particles, toxic chemicals, and immune system dysregulation are actually driving that rise. Dr. Vojdani also introduces a framework that is both practical and urgent: the four zones of autoimmunity, green, yellow, orange, and red, and explains why antibodies show up in the blood three to 19 years before symptoms of full autoimmune disease ever appear. That window is not just a warning. It is an opportunity. He walks through the specific lab panels available today that can tell you where you are in that spectrum, what cross-reactivity between viruses and human tissue means for conditions like MS, liver autoimmunity, and long COVID, and what actually keeps the immune system in balance at the cellular level. If your body feels like it's running on empty, overburdened, or just not responding the way it used to, Haylie's latest book, Toxic Overload, tells you exactly what to do. I have long been inspired and educated by TED Talks. No doubt you have done the same and have your own personal favourites. Today, I wish to introduce you to a new group of inspiring speakers who recently spoke at a TEDx event organised by Trinity Business School in Dublin to celebrate their 100th anniversary this year. Trinity College in 1916 had a vision for Ireland and its people, while bullets and bombs were exploding in the Streets of Dublin and throughout the country. To mark TBS's 100th anniversary, they will create and host many events throughout the year. The theme for this TEDx event was Change101, allowing the speakers to reflect on what will define the next century across society, people and planet. The event was a huge success, with a packed-to-capacity audience, who were greatly appreciative of the speakers' ability to engage, entertain and excite in equal measure. I was very pleased to be chosen to coach and prepare the 14 speakers for TEDx Trinity, an event hosted at Trinity Business School, Dublin, on March 5th. There was a mix of participants, from current students, past graduates and academics. Here are just a few of the attention grabbing titles: Loneliness and Trust in the age of AI When the Law Gets It Wrong Rethinking Jealousy – How others success becomes your own The Chilling Effect of Cultural Silence Why not give yourself some time to learn and grow while being entertained? Click the image below to view each talk and choose your favourite: A good TEDx talk can be a calling card when starting out on a career or seeking advancement in your career. Good Speakers get promoted – I coach people to present on a wide variety of subjects with vastly differing styles as evidenced in these TEDx talks.

In this episode of Resiliency Radio with Dr. Jill, Dr. Jill Carnahan explores the complex and rapidly evolving science behind Long COVID and autoimmune disease with Dr. Aristo Vojdani, a leading expert in immunology and functional medicine. Dr. Vojdani shares decades of groundbreaking research into how the immune system becomes dysregulated, revealing how infections, environmental toxins, and food antigens can trigger autoimmune reactions through mechanisms like molecular mimicry and gut permeability. The conversation dives deep into how SARS-CoV-2, Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), and HHV6 contribute to Long COVID and neuroautoimmune conditions, as well as how early detection through advanced laboratory testing may help prevent disease progression. This episode offers powerful insights for both clinicians and patients seeking to understand the root causes of autoimmunity and chronic illness in the post-COVID era.
My article this week is about the Trinity Business School's 100-year celebration and the TEDx event they hosted, entitled "Change 101". What were my observations about the TEDx event? Trinity Business School spared no expense in supporting the TEDx event. The TBS team appointed to lead the project did so with gusto. Their task was to ensure that the event went off without a hitch, and it did. My main point of contact was Maria L Gallo, a Canadian with Italian blood, whose energy and ambition for the project was infectious. Maria's selection of speakers was well researched. Those chosen included academics and students who understood the opportunities TEDx talks could offer for personal growth and career development. Let me tell you a little about some of the speakers I got to know and support. Over a short period, they created some of the most engaging and entertaining talks I have had the pleasure of hearing in quite some time. What were the key takeaways from coaching the TEDx speakers? Brendan Kennelly, Poet, Author and Professor of English at Trinity, said that to be a good teacher, you must do two things: "give your audience confidence to ask questions and have fun". It's something I think about and focus on every time I am in front of a group of people. With this group of TEDx wannabes, it was easy. A more enthusiastic group I have rarely come across. So, where does my coaching start? I always start by listening to the speaker's ideas that they wish to share with an audience. This group had the most engaging and wide-ranging topics, from Exomoons to Loneliness in the age of AI. In between were talks on Jealousy, Resilience, Social Media, Culture, not to forget How to Succeed as a Racing Driver, or the Determination Required to Represent Ireland on the Rugby Field. Do I know about all these topics? Of course not. The speakers are the experts. My job is to take their knowledge and skills and help them craft a story that excites education and entertains a general audience. I provide a conversation structure that works for their topic while rearranging the story to ensure the following: You get attention / create interest / provide information / demonstrate your expertise on your topic. While concluding by reminding your audience of how taking your advice could benefit them or someone they care about. All the talks will be hosted on TED in the next month or so. I would strongly advise you to seek them out; you will benefit from doing so. There is a taster video available on my LinkedIn profile. On Friday morning last, it popped up on my Facebook page (that I rarely visit) that this day was World Storytelling Day. My head immediately flooded with stories that my mother used to tell us when we were children. Mostly, I remember sitting around an open fire. We did not have much money, and my father was away in England working, as there was no work to be had in Ireland. Sitting by the fire, trying to eke out heat from the remaining coal and sticks. My mother use to wrapping potato skins in a damp newspaper and banking the back of the fire to keep it going for longer. My mother was a Republican, and her father fought in 1916 and ended up, after the rising, in Frongoch concentration camp in Wales. However, we still had a picture of the Queen Elizabeth hanging on our wall. At the time, I took it for granted. When I was older, I inquired as to why we had the picture of the Queen on our wall. Her reply was that the Queen gave your father a job when no one in Ireland could. Hard times When I was growing up, it was always hard times, not that I ever noticed, as my mother somehow managed to keep my sister and me well fed and warm. Does anyone remember sheets made from flour sacks or old army (FCA) coats for bed blankets? Now I realise that when we three were sitting close to the open fire seeking heat, and my mother Celia was telling us stories of her younger days, it served two purposes. The stories reminded her of good times from her youth. It was years later when I realised how lonely she must have been without my dad. Harder Times Every night she would relive her youth, which involved hard work from an early age, and going to dances. (She loved to dance). Her father died when she was only a child, leaving her mother to raise seven children. Also, there were always ghost stories! The one I remember best, and curiously, the story my daughter remembers best, as in later life she told all her stories to my daughter. When she was still a child, my mother was sent to live and work for an uncle a long way from her family home. Ghost Story "One morning, on her way back to the farm, driving the pony and trap up a long laneway after delivering milk to the shops in the nearby town, her attention was drawn to the local hearse approaching in the distance. As the hearse approached, she could see the coachman whom she would have known and the four black horses with plumage on their harness. When she got to a wider part of the lane, she pulled in to let the hearse pass – but it never did. On approaching the farm gate, her uncle was waiting and opened it for her. She told him to keep an eye out, as the hearse was coming up the lane behind her. He replied that the hearse driver must be lost, or new, as no one along the lane has died recently. The following morning, the uncle whom my mother loved dropped dead while shaving himself to get ready to go to morning mass." Stories are what make us who we are. In my recent article, I spoke to you about Mark Carney's wonderful talk at Davos and explained the structure he used to deliver it. Now let me tell you about how Volodymyr Zelenskyy's talk used the same format in his emotional appeal to Europe and the World for help for his people. His opening lines followed a classic format used by all good speakers. He speaks about something familiar to the audience that would immediately get their attention. Then he proceeded to talk about something that would gain their interest. See how he did this below: Attention: "Dear friends, everyone remembers the great American film, "Groundhog Day" with Bill Murray and Andie McDowell, yes, but no one would want to live like that, repeating the same thing for weeks, months, and, of course, for years." Interest: "And yet, that's exactly how we live now. It's our life and every Forum like this one proves it. Just last year, here in Davos, I ended my speech with the words, Europe needs to know how to defend itself. A year has passed and nothing has changed. We are still in a situation where I must say the same words, but why?" Main Body of the talk: This would be what I call the conviction part of the talk. He then provided examples of where countries could take action. A year has passed and nothing has happened Things move faster than Europe's decision making Europe must build a better world Without action there is no tomorrow Zelenskyy provides lots of examples of how support could be provided to Ukraine, and I will leave it to you to listen to his speech after reading this article. In my view, he provided too many suggestions, which often leads people to think this is insurmountable and so end up doing nothing. There is an old Irish proverb which says 'Do not send a man into a shed full of shovels and ask him to take his pick.' Suggesting a desired outcome is a critical part of all speeches that call for Action Desirable Outcome: "Ukraine is ready to help with anything that is needed to guarantee peace and prevent destruction. We are ready to help others become stronger than they are now. We are ready to be part of a Europe that truly matters, a Europe of real power, Today, we need that power to protect our own independence, but you need Ukraine's independence too, because tomorrow, you may have to defend your way of life, and when Ukraine is with you, no one will wipe their feet on you and you will always have a way to act and act in time." Call for Action: Here, Zelenskyy is pleading with powerful people to take action, and he ends his speech by bringing us back to where he started, appealing to leaders to act. "This is very important, act in time. Dear friends, today is one of the last days of Davos, though definitely not the last Davos, of course, and everyone agrees on that and many people believe that somehow things will work out on their own, but we cannot rely on 'somehow' for real security." "Faith is not enough. Faith in a partner in a lucky turn of events, no intellectual discussions are capable of stopping wars, we need action, world order comes from action and we just need the courage to act. Without action now, there is no tomorrow. Let's end this Groundhog Day, and yes, it's possible." Zelenskyy brought his speech full circle in referring to Groundhog Day at the end, ensuring his audience would remember his Call for Action. By Executive Coach Andrew Keogh of Aristo.ie
I am a public philosopher, it is my only job. I am enabled to do this job, in large part, thanks to support from my listeners and readers. You can support my work, keep it independent and online, at https://stoicismpod.com/members Looking for more Stoic content? Consider my 3x/week newsletter "Stoic Brekkie": https://stoicbrekkie.com In this episode, I take up a question that seems settled, orthodox, and uncontroversial: can indifferents be preferred or dispreferred? Most Stoics would say yes and move on. But there is a serious ancient challenge to that position, and understanding it matters more than most people realize. I begin with the standard Stoic account, drawing on Zeno as recorded by Stobaeus and Cicero. Virtue alone is good, vice alone is bad, and everything else is indifferent. Still, some indifferents are naturally preferred or rejected because they align with our rational nature. Health, social cooperation, and material sufficiency are not goods, but they are “according to nature.” I then introduce the provocateur: Ariston of Chios. Ariston rejects the very idea of preferred and dispreferred indifferents. In his view, calling something a preferred indifferent is just calling it a good under another name. For Ariston, everything between virtue and vice is radically neutral, and any preference only arises situationally, never because the thing itself has standing within nature. I explain why this disagreement is not merely semantic. Ariston's position is inseparable from his rejection of Stoic physics and logic. Once those are removed, there is no rational structure of nature to ground stable preferences. Ethics collapses into a stark minimalism where virtue alone matters and everything else is interchangeable depending on circumstance. This is why later Stoics saw Ariston as a dead end rather than a reformer. Without physics and logic, Stoic ethics loses its ability to guide action across time, roles, and recurring human situations. The philosophy becomes thinner, not sharper. Finally, I connect this ancient dispute to a modern problem. Contemporary Stoicism often tries to keep the ethics while quietly discarding the physics and logic as unnecessary or outdated. That move repeats Ariston's mistake. Stoicism can evolve, but it cannot survive if its foundations are simply removed without replacement. You cannot pull the columns out from under the Stoa and expect the roof to hold. If we want Stoicism to remain coherent, actionable, and philosophically serious, we need to understand why preferred indifferents exist and what architectural commitments make them possible in the first place. Trump and Republicans are joining Democrats in governing as “aristo-populists.” In today's action-packed show, I analyze Trump's housing plan, desire to cap credit card rates, and spat with Jerome Powell over near-zero interest rates through the prism of aristo-populism vs. free-market populism. Aristo-populism is the antithesis of principled governance in that you are swayed by the monied interests at the top of the food chain of policy, sell political access, and then get swayed by perceived public opinion at the bottom to overcorrect. Whereas free-market populism — being for the people — means driving down the middle without any favorable treatment of any one class or industry. I explain exactly how the housing policy fits into the duplicitous dynamic of the arsonist as the firefighter. Also, Trump continues to endorse only candidates who will support data centers rather than those who will actually fight the elites. Finally, there is no better time for a truly independent party and movement. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
For me, it's a time to wind down and slow down. A time to do some creative stuff, e.g., read the book on your bedside locker that you've been promising to read, or the book you will be given as a present. I recently joined a book club and have read and enjoyed books I would never have considered, while making new acquaintances, hearing other people's points of view, and being surprised by their observations. The image above is the cover of one of my all-time favourite books. I would make a perfect holiday read or gift. It's Peter Sheridan's memoir of growing up with his brother Jim and the rest of his family. My memories of the book: Erecting the TV aerial and the sad story of conkers up the chimney. Here is another suggestion: Take a little more time for you, and exercise: Nothing strenuous, this is a lovely time to take a walk in a park, up a low hill or on a beach, on your own, or with someone close to you. You will find it much easier to talk shoulder to shoulder. (This particularly applies to men.) I used to feel envious of people sitting chatting over coffee, as I rushed about the city from one meeting to the next. I have changed and now build in some white space in my day and visit a lovely building, be it a church, a library, or a gallery. It's not 15 to 30 minutes wasted, I believe it's recharging, and in this time, your creativity will kick in, and the issue/problem nagging at you will offer up a solution. You can make small changes that have big effects: Please take time over the holiday break to meet old friends, while creating opportunities to meet people who, in time, may be added to your small group of old friends. Very few people have dozens of good friends; we are more likely to regard acquaintances and good buddies as friends, but they're not until you put the effort into creating opportunities to engage with these people in new situations or occasions. I'm setting myself the goal over the break to re-engage with family and people I have not connected with recently. Why don't you do the same! Thank you for reading my articles, and I look forward to your continued support in 2026.

The following is an extract from an interview with Rory McIlroy on how conversations with Bob Rotella have helped his game. "We are talking about not getting too much into results and outcomes, we talk about trying to chase a feeling on the golf course. Like if you're on the golf course, what way do you want to feel when you're playing golf. That's something that is a - it's not something I obviously just do here, but I do every week that I compete. If I can chase that feeling and make that the important thing, then hopefully the golf will take care of itself". Source: Golf News UK - Masters Inteview: Rory McIlroy I have experienced this feeling on the golf course, but not nearly as often as I would like. That feeling, in my words, is best described as playing effortlessly without thoughts of technique, swing planes, or score, etc. That's the day you will smile on the course and have fun with those around you. While playing your best golf. It's never about the score; it's about playing Golf effortlessly. (Or whatever your sport is.) Realising that this is what you are capable of, more often with the right thoughts or no thought process, just doing what comes naturally. Why am I having this conversation with you? About my thoughts on golf? Because I believe the same advice applies when speaking in public. I often encounter people who want or need to be more confident and speak in front of groups, but are hesitant or nervous about doing so. Why? Because I believe they have experienced what people describe as "helpful advice". This advice usually starts with "Let me provide you with some constructive criticism". (Constructive criticism is criticism with the word constructive added to soften the blow - it does not!) Speak slower, speak quicker, louder; don't put your hands in your pockets, make eye contact, imagine your audience is naked, etc., etc. You know the drill. All of the above advice merely increases people's nervousness and diverts the focus from your purpose and reason for speaking to this group. Golf Lesson: Anyone who has experienced a golf lesson from a friend will know the drill: keep your head down, turn from the waist, wait for your shoulders to touch your chin, finish high, all leading to total confusion and exasperation. My wife went to a very well-known golf professional for a lesson some years ago, which consisted of him telling her to 'hit down on the ball' for the whole lesson. The problem was that she did not know what he meant by 'hit down on the ball', and he did not explain or demonstrate; he just assumed she understood. Good coaches, firstly, listen to understand and then provide simple, clear instructions enabling you to progress. Bob Rotella Bob Rotella says you should do this when standing over your golf ball on the course. Look at the target Look at the ball Swing the club What this series of actions does is clear your mind of all the junk usually going around in your head. The advice I provide to my clients as part of their preparation is also a three-step process. Research your audience You know your subject/topic; otherwise, you would not be asked to speak Believe in yourself and they will BELIEVE in you Like Bob Rotella, I aim to keep my clients' heads clear of all the noise and stress that are usually associated with speaking to a group. Recently, I attended a Pitch event and listened to four entrepreneurs present their business ideas. Of these businesses, three already had revenue. In my experience, the best presenter is more likely to win the pitch competition, because they will be remembered long after the other pitches are forgotten. You win by being the best communicator and telling an exciting business story in the right way. On this occasion, there was an audience vote at the end of the event to select the best Pitch. I agreed with the audience's choice, and later, when I engaged with the judges, they shared the same opinion. How should you Pitch? Start here: Priority One: Tell the judges and the audience the problem you solve. The best way to do this is with a story that engages and is memorable, while clearly explaining the problem/opportunity. In my experience with Pitch events/Competitions, the majority of decks are usually just collections of slides that attempt to provide information; more often than not, they are unmemorable and dull. Priority Two: Tell the listeners about your customers and your sales to date. If you are at a very early stage, tell people who your customers will be and what your current level of engagement is. Priority Three: Introduce the team and their expertise early; people give money to people they believe in. Investors need to judge whether this person will spend their money wisely. Next, discuss your solution. Keep it short and straightforward. What else is a potential investor or judge on a panel looking for? Here are some of my thoughts. Start and finish on time; it's bad manners to do otherwise On this occasion, everyone ran over time and had to rush through their final slides. In most cases, the slides and information that the judges required to make an informed decision about the business idea and the team's ambition were missing. The slides were generally uninteresting and lacked engagement. It was unclear whom they would invoice. In several cases, there was no ASK. Revealed in the Q&A: In all cases, the presentations became clear only after the judging panel quizzed the presenters to elicit the information that should have been included in the pitch deck. When this happens, the judges will understand the problem you solve and who will pay for your solution. Allow for more in-depth interrogation of the presentation and their plans for the next three years or so. Be sure your financial numbers are accurate and, when asking for money/ investment, clearly explain to the judges how you plan to spend the funds. Epilogue: I've been coaching startups for 20+ years to pitch their business ideas. Making a good impression the first time is critical; you may not get a second opportunity. I am back in harness after taking a three-month break. I feel energised and ready for "One more spin on the merry-go-round". (The title of a book written by Sean Duignan after Albert Reynolds became Taoiseach in 1992. Albert said to Sean, "Are you ready for one more spin on the merry-go-round?") What did I spend my summer doing? I read books for the pleasure of reading and the "white space" reading provides. Discovered new songs and singers, new poems, and as a result of the time spent relaxing, visiting bookshops, but also in pubs in Sligo and elsewhere, listening to music and engaging in conversation. Oh yes, I also played some golf! I visited "Liber", an independent bookshop on Sligo's Main Street, staffed by very knowledgeable and helpful book lovers, and came away with an armful of books. I have made a determined effort to read as many as possible. My favourite holiday read was "The Last Ditch", as I very much enjoy Eamonn Sweeney's writing style. You will also find him on the back of the sports supplement in the Sunday Independent. His publisher's brief for the book was to review the 2024 GAA hurling and football season. However, the colour in the book comes from his memories of his family and, most enjoyably, the stories about the pre- and post-match engagements with people on the stands. Also, the craic on trains and buses, travelling to and from the games. MY most enjoyable evening of the summer was in "Shoot the Crows" music pub in Sligo town, when we joined in with the group singing "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd, a song that passed me by when first released, and is now a favourite on my playlist. A great chorus to sing along to loudly. I will share some more of the inspiration I received because of taking time out, and hopefully my musings in the coming months will also benefit you. I am now ready for another spin on the merry-go-round and look forward to connecting with you again through my articles. By Executive Coach Andrew Keogh of Aristo.ie

A Senior PGA golfer wanted to be kept abreast of all the new discoveries being made in sports psychology. So, he asked Dr Bob Rotella, a world-renowned sports psychologist, to bring him up to speed with the latest developments. Dr Rotella guided Rory McIlroy towards his recent Grand Slam Masters victory. Here is Bob's response: "I had to tell him that most of what passes for discovery in sports psychology really isn't new. There is just the same old wisdom, repeated over and over again, repackaged in new terminology." Taken from his wonderful book 'Golf Is Not a Game of Perfect', not only an excellent book for golfers who wish to improve, but in my mind a guide to how to live your life Pitch for Investment: The same applies to Pitching and the templates offered up as state-of-the-art (that expression is now out of date) by the likes of Sequoid Capital, Kawasaki's 10/20/30 formula, and then there are also Y Combinator, Techstars and many others. All using their own words to describe more or less the same questions that need answering if you wish to win funding. I strongly agree with all of the advice provided by these esteemed organisations. You must address each of these headings: The Problem, Solution, Market Size, Route-to-Market, Traction, Competition, Team and most importantly the ASK However, when coaching my clients, I use storytelling/visual words and place great emphasis on the order in which they present each of these topics. There is no right or wrong order to tell your story. How you answer the questions an investor needs to know will change as your business ideas evolve. Sometimes the focus should be on the team, other times it's the product, and when Sales are generated, it's the key to unlocking investment. However, I believe you must start with the PROBLEM Story. A Pitch should be a story that people will remember and be capable of retelling to others. If they are engaged enough and capable of retelling your story, you are on the road to success. The best pitches are always stories delivered conversationally. I tell my clients to - Stop Selling, Pitching, Lecturing and Sermonising. These styles of presenting no longer engage. Converse with people, and they will listen and engage: Investors hear thousands of pitches, and most are not memorable or investable. A good pitch coach will help you tell your story so that people understand, see the opportunity and want to engage further - the first step on the road to winning funding. My Goal: I want the people I work with to wake up every morning excited, because every day is another opportunity to chase their dreams. It has been a couple of years since Aristo (@Aristos_Revenge) joined the show, and so tonight will be especially thrilling given all of the cultural shifts we are feeling beneath our feet. The arrival of sixty white South African farmers, and the President's acknowledgment of the ongoing genocide that qualifies them as actual refugees, has drawn out some incredibly revealing reaction from progressive groups in the United States—especially those who hide their political operations behind the mask of Faith-Based Initiatives. We're going to talk about how the age of ignoring the true race-based motives of the state is ending, and what that means going forward. Some years ago, I used this text as part of an article I published. (Apologies for being the first to mention Christmas on 7th May 2025.) "My mother who never went abroad in her life was the owner of a passport. It was called Christmas, and it marked the completion of one journey and the beginning of another. To her, Christmas was a way of saying we've arrived, we're here, we've come through. Poverty, illness, worries, bills, all the dangers, the reefs, the storms, we're past. We were at anchor in a lagoon of quiet water before again venturing upon the high seas. And, like all passports, Christmas was not to be tampered with. Safely dwelt in its unwavering sameness. Every moment of the day itself was a re-run of the same moment a year ago and would itself be repeated a year hence." Hugh Leonard - Short Story Christmas Time Machine Back then, when I had the first draft of the article ready, I had Grammarly check the text (an excellent tool for those like me who could be better at spelling and grammar). The poor program nearly had heart failure (if computers have hearts?) and told me everything about the paragraph was incorrect. Today, I pasted the paragraph into an AI platform, and it said the following "The passage is evocative and metaphorically rich, but a few tweaks could enhance its clarity, flow, and emotional impact. Here are some suggestions:" Am I going to let AI correct one of Ireland's best-loved writers? No way! Too often, when I'm coaching clients for an important presentation they keep insisting that they need a script. Here is my reply: Scripts are for actors, yet the best actors always want to reduce the text. They know that a gesture or a change of tone can impart more meaning than memorising and delivering lines. Years ago, there was a famous Northern Ireland comedian, Frank Carson, whose catch phrase was "It's the way I tell 'em" The same applies whether you are looking to create a presentation to inform, bring about a change, or win sales and investment. It's the way I tell them - still applies. I coach people to have a conversation with their audience. Converse with people, and they will listen and more importantly engage with you. Here is an excellent piece of advice from one of Obama's speechwriters, David Litt, in his book, 'THANKS, OBAMA' "People hate words and love pictures" I would suggest that words, when used correctly, can create pictures. The secret is to add detail to your conversation. Please reread Hugh Leonard's opening to his short story, and you will understand what I mean. By Executive Coach Andrew Keogh of Aristo.ie
I regularly say to groups I speak to that your education gets you the interview, and your ability to tell your story gets you the job. In the time after you get the job, if it's a leadership role, you will be evaluated by your ability to engage with and influence your team. In the time after you get the job, if it's a leadership role, you will be evaluated by your ability to engage with and influence your team. Speak UP: We confer values and abilities on people who have good communication skills. For example, might I suggest American presidents Presidents who long after they finished their term of office are still often quoted. ~ John F. Kennedy - Inaugural Address ~ "And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man". ~ Ronald Reagan ~ "Are you better off today than you were four years ago" A great election slogan - creatively swiped by another American President recently. ~ Barack Obama ~ "Cynicism is a choice. Hope is a better choice." My Favourite Speakers: In Ireland, I have my personal heroes, people capable of engaging and holding an audience in their palm. BIG Jim Larkin. (As depicted in Strumpet City written by James Plunkett, the first novel about Ireland I read, and still one of my favourites. John B Keane Tony O'Reilly Brendan Gleeson Mary O'Rourke The recent presidents of Ireland: ~ Mary Robinson ~ "Feel empowered. And if you start to do it, if you start to feel your voice heard, you will never go back". ~ Mary McAleese ~ "Change starts with us; we must be the change we want to see in the world". ~ Michael D. Higgins ~ "Now it is time to turn to an older wisdom that, while respecting material comfort and security as a basic right of all, also recognises that many of the most valuable things in life cannot be measured". The days of the great orators who could rouse a large gathering of people onto the public streets and into action are gone. Without a doubt, the presentation style and situations have changed, but the need for good communication is now an even greater requirement. The noise and distractions are greater than ever before, and you can be the person who steps up and demonstrates your ability to speak and represent your values. Step up to the mark: In your personal life, you will be called upon to speak at important business and personal events weddings, funerals, retirement parties etc. Situations that are critical to get right not only for yourself but for the people you are speaking to. You can refuse to be the person who accepts such challenges and probably become the hurler on the ditch at the event. Or, you can step forward, show leadership and be the person people want to hear. If you are the person who wishes to take Obamas advice and resist cynicism while providing hope, find a coach who can help you find your voice and tell your story. It's true, the man on the weather forecast said it. It's the end of winter! It's spring! I'm going to increase my output. I'm coming out of hibernation. I was listening to an expert on the TV say that most animals who hibernate do not go into a deep sleep for the winter. They cuddle up somewhere cosy and reduce their heart rate, conserving energy to get them through the cold season. On occasions, they will wake up and stroll about if the weather is mild and then return to their cosy nest. I have done some of that with the occasional whiskey in front of a warm fire and enjoyed what we in Ireland would call the bad weather. Yet, even in the bad weather, I've enjoyed walks and golf every Sunday (in good or bad weather, mostly bad), and all done in the company of family and friends. Winter is not so bad after all. Níl aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin (There's no fireside like your own fireside) Now, I'm going to get a spring in my step, and I suggest you do the same. "What's occurring?" is an expression regularly used in one of my favourite TV shows, which finally ended this Christmas. Gavin and Stacey was one of those shows where you cared about everybody. When discussing the show with people, you realised that the characters' names were on the tip of their tongues, and each person had their own favourite. This is the sign of a good storyline created by great writers who have developed fully rounded characters. People you care about, as opposed to cardboard characters you see in lots of movies and TV programmes. Of course, none of the above would be possible without a cast of actors who could put flesh on the bones of each person. I would have liked to have attended one of their house parties on the show. They were great events full of music, laughter and bonhomie! The Irish House party: When I listen to Irish people discussing their childhood, they all remember the house parties where everyone sang and played a musical instrument, even if it was just the humble comb with some paper wrapped around it. These were times when, as they would say now, we had nothing, but managed to enjoy ourselves from time to time. All that was needed was an excuse: the afters of a wedding, a funeral, friends and family up for the match, a christening. We just want to get together to provide some short-term relief from the Ireland of our past. It would appear now that "we're a great little country", but we need to be careful not to forget who we are and where we came from. When did you last have a group at your home for an evening of fun and music? The event I'm talking about does not need to be a significant, costly event which requires a lot of time and effort. Why not have some friends and relatives over for a beer, wine, and snacks. With just a plate of sandwiches or very dodge pizzas, (Tayto cheese and onion constitutes a snack), tell some stories, perhaps sing a few songs, recite your favourite poem or reminisce about family and friends. Now, I hear the objection: we can't drink and drive, and of course, you can't. But you could hop in a taxi, the cost would still be less than an indifferent meal in a pub or restaurant, which provides little or no interaction or stimulating conversation. Come on, take the plunge! Tell people what's occurring and have a good time for yourself and those you who have not seen in an age. By Executive Coach Andrew Keogh of Aristo.ie
As a result of reading Dale Carnegie's book "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living" and then going on to be a Dale Carnegie Inc. advocation coach, thankfully I have had a positive outlook for most of the time in my life. Or, as the song says and Monty Python sings, "always look on the bright side of life". Do what I personally do to help improve difficult situations: Turn your lemons into lemonade. Ask yourself what is the worst that can happen, accept the worst and then move on to look at how you can improve on the worst situation. Example: Golfers regularly say something like this, and what's more, they say it out loud. "Don't go into the water!" My suggestion, along with the best golfing coaches and sports psychologists, is to recommend that you visualise and verbalise your ball landing in the middle of the fairway. Which thought is most likely to succeed? Here is some advice to help you present with increased confidence in 2025: I hear people give this advice to people who are nervous before speaking to an audience. "Imagine your audience is naked." I know this advice would be of little help in overcoming nervousness, and it will likely be distracting. I advise speakers to mingle and chat with their audience, rather than nervously go over their talk's opening lines, which will take your mind off your content and onto the most important participants, your audience. How to start? When coaching people to present, my first job is to stop them starting with some form of apology. "The dog ate my homework!" "I would have liked more time to prepare" etc. "I'm not sure why they asked me to give this talk." My advice is to create a strong opening line, think HEADLINE. Then, memorise it and deliver it with confidence and energy. Example: Barack Obama spoke to thousands of people in College Green Dublin in 2011. His opening comment was, "Hello, I am Barack O'Bama, and I have come to Ireland to find the missing apostrophe in my name". This opening made a positive impression. "I need a script": Do not think I must have a script; scripts are for actors. I hear you cry "but I will forget something". So what? Nobody will know but you! Worry: Perhaps worry, it's an Irish trait, as we are generally too hard on ourselves. In the past, our parents and teachers invariably played a part in our lack of a positive outlook. I believe this situation is now improving. Affirmations to try out: Act enthusiastic, and you will be enthusiastic. Fake it till you make it! My best advice: STOP delivering speeches, lectures and sermons; those days are gone. Think conversation; audiences will love you and engage with you when you speak to them in a conversational way. Action for 2025 Upgrade all your communications. People we email, we should phone. People we phone, we should meet. People we meet for lunch, we should meet for dinner. By Executive Coach Andrew Keogh of Aristo.ie
Why does everybody think they're a presentation coach? Just think about it! Look at your own life. Remember your parents' advice: stand up straight, speak slower, do not mumble, and be sure to have eye contact. Perhaps you now pass that 'sage' advice to your children and work colleagues. I was at a pitch event recently, and the three people who spoke had good business ideas. However, after the event, when talking to people in the network part of the evening, people who knew me and what I do wanted to share their comments and thoughts about the speaker's presentation style. Their Comments: The entrepreneurs spoke too quickly. They spent too much time talking to their slides with their backs to the audience, particularly the judges. Spoke too softly etc.; you know the drill. Nobody spoke to me about the excellent business ideas, some of which already have significant sales. Why does everybody think they can do my job? I just wanted to get that issue off my chest. Now, let's focus on you and provide some advice when presenting. Where do we start? Bring your audience back into the room; often, they may be in the room but not engaged. Audience: preparation We start with the audience: who are they? Be sure to research your audience in advance on LinkedIn their websites. If all else fails, ask somebody who knows them. In particular, research the judges when presenting at a pitch event. Problem: People will pay to have their problems solved, but you must demonstrate a depth of knowledge of their issues. The best way to do this is by telling a problem story demonstrating your expertise/experience in your chosen marketplace. Here is how Diarmuid O' Muirghesa, a schoolteacher and CEO of Olus Education, did that on the night: Open: His Opening remarks: "We are all told young people are digital natives, isn't that what we all think? Diarmuid says young people do not even have keyboard skills, never mind the ability to code or be creative on their computer." He got my attention and interest. Did he get yours? A Pitch needs to cover all the following: The Problem / The Market / The Team / The Solution and several other topics. However, you are unlikely to reengage people later unless you get your audience's attention immediately. P.S. Talk to acquaintances or friendly faces in your audience, it will put you at ease and increase audience engagement. Recently, I went to an inspiring event created and hosted by Eve Earley, one of the most interesting and inspiring people I know. The event was a 'SPEAK' event where nine people spoke on the topic of 'uncertainty'. These people were not professional speakers and, in most cases, did not see themselves in that role. However, they were engaging, inspiring and highly informative on their chosen topic. Each spoke from the heart, and you could hear a pin drop. Such was the level of engagement. Be believable: People often ask me what's the secret of being a good speaker, and my answer is "Be believable". All these speakers were believable, each in their own way. The variety is what made the evening so engaging and yet so enjoyable. As one of my colleagues said when driving back to Dublin, imagine how wonderful it would be if business conferences and meetings could be as powerful and inspiring as the event we have just attended. Amen to that comment! Here is my advice to people who would like to speak out, be it to one, five or five hundred. Tell a story you know to be true, and influenced who you are, and people will listen and take your ideas and advice on board. Now, that negative voice in your head says, you can't be that open and vulnerable? Yes, you can. People will be inspired and influenced by you when you do so. Recently, I attended a family wedding, and it was a most enjoyable day and evening. It was lovely to meet family, some of whom I had not seen in months and others for years. It is nice to see nieces and nephews who were children the last time you saw them and are now young adults in university, employed, and sometimes with their own families. Because of my job, people always ask me for my thoughts on the speeches, and wherever possible, I give a polite reply and change the subject. However, for the benefit of people who will have/want to speak at a wedding or other important family occasion, here are some general comments which are applicable to most family occasions. Unless you are a brilliant joke teller and sober, avoid telling jokes at all costs. Someone is always offended (Madison Square Garden "Island of Garbage") You need to work on preparing your speech; this takes hours over several weeks. Find a quiet space, talk to yourself (out loud) and time yourself. Ten minutes is always enough; otherwise, by the time all the top table speak, the total time is often an hour or more. This is not how your guests wish to spend their day. Also, the kitchen will be much happier as the meal will not be ruined as the talks go on and on and on. Enjoy hot food: I remember some years ago, a proud father stood up to speak about his daughter. The talk started on the day she was born and covered every major and minor event in her life up to the wedding day. Fifty-five minutes later, he sat down exhausted, and so were we. On another occasion, I have seen the bride's father deliver a well-prepared and humorous speech, which went down well with his buddies from the Golf Club, but he neglected to mention his daughter - OOPs! Bestman: You are at a family wedding where offence can often be taken, so do not tell the stories you would tell over a few pints in the pub or on the stags. Groom: Be sure to tell your wife how fortunate and happy you feel and how well she is looking on the day. Do not read your script; just tell her if you want to sound sincere. For all other speakers, be brief. Key people at the top table, maximum time ten minutes all others less than five, time yourself in advance, otherwise you will be the person the guests talked about for the rest of the day for all the wrong reasons. P.S. It's perfectly acceptable to have a small piece of paper with key words written down. If you are going to read your speech, which I do not recommend, be sure to have your glasses with you. The picture above has been hanging on my office wall for over twenty years. Some people I have engaged with online have commented on the image and enquired about how it came to be hanging there. My father brought this print home from some school he was renovating when I was just a child. Perhaps the teachers misunderstood the message when this picture was hanging on classroom walls. As probably in their own lives, they had experienced cruelty. We've all heard adults say if they went home and told the parents that the teacher slapped them, the response was you must have deserved it, and you got another slap on the ear or worse. We have a 17-year-old dog, Sadie. (17 x 7) That's old. She was a rescue dog and badly treated by the previous owner. She will still not eat her food if you are standing close by. We must come inside and close the door before she starts to eat, which she does with an ear always cocked. The memory of being badly treated lasts forever, be it dog or human. The picture message is simple: look after your people and provide a good working environment; you will get the best out of them for your business and personally. I provide coaching/training to many businesses to practise the principles espoused in this image. The only proviso I would have to my previous comments would be something that employees suggest can happen. They are provided with good spaces to work, good food, and fitness facilities on-site, encouraging people to stay at work longer with little work-life balance. The skills leaders will realise that tired and weary employees will just go through the motions with reduced ability and opportunity to bring creativity to their role. My advice is to continue to provide good working environments, then send your people home to relax with their families and friends, and return to the office refreshed and full of creativity. N.B. This means no contact after working hours unless in an emergency. Emergencies are something that happens once or twice a year, not every other day. My Advice: In my previous writing, I have mentioned that I trained as a coach for Dale Carnegie Inc., founded by the author of "How to Win Friends and Influence People'. The three fundamental principles of this book are: Don't criticise, condemn or complain Give honest, sincere appreciation Arouse in the other person an eager want. The only way to get a person to willingly do something is to use these principles. By Executive Coach Andrew Keogh of Aristo.ie
