A Senior PGA golfer wanted to be kept abreast of all the new discoveries being made in sports psychology. So, he asked Dr Bob Rotella, a world-renowned sports psychologist, to bring him up to speed with the latest developments. Dr Rotella guided Rory McIlroy towards his recent Grand Slam Masters victory. Here is Bob's response: "I had to tell him that most of what passes for discovery in sports psychology really isn't new. There is just the same old wisdom, repeated over and over again, repackaged in new terminology." Taken from his wonderful book 'Golf Is Not a Game of Perfect', not only an excellent book for golfers who wish to improve, but in my mind a guide to how to live your life Pitch for Investment: The same applies to Pitching and the templates offered up as state-of-the-art (that expression is now out of date) by the likes of Sequoid Capital, Kawasaki's 10/20/30 formula, and then there are also Y Combinator, Techstars and many others. All using their own words to describe more or less the same questions that need answering if you wish to win funding. I strongly agree with all of the advice provided by these esteemed organisations. You must address each of these headings: The Problem, Solution, Market Size, Route-to-Market, Traction, Competition, Team and most importantly the ASK However, when coaching my clients, I use storytelling/visual words and place great emphasis on the order in which they present each of these topics. There is no right or wrong order to tell your story. How you answer the questions an investor needs to know will change as your business ideas evolve. Sometimes the focus should be on the team, other times it's the product, and when Sales are generated, it's the key to unlocking investment. However, I believe you must start with the PROBLEM Story. A Pitch should be a story that people will remember and be capable of retelling to others. If they are engaged enough and capable of retelling your story, you are on the road to success. The best pitches are always stories delivered conversationally. I tell my clients to - Stop Selling, Pitching, Lecturing and Sermonising. These styles of presenting no longer engage. Converse with people, and they will listen and engage: Investors hear thousands of pitches, and most are not memorable or investable. A good pitch coach will help you tell your story so that people understand, see the opportunity and want to engage further - the first step on the road to winning funding. My Goal: I want the people I work with to wake up every morning excited, because every day is another opportunity to chase their dreams. It has been a couple of years since Aristo (@Aristos_Revenge) joined the show, and so tonight will be especially thrilling given all of the cultural shifts we are feeling beneath our feet. The arrival of sixty white South African farmers, and the President's acknowledgment of the ongoing genocide that qualifies them as actual refugees, has drawn out some incredibly revealing reaction from progressive groups in the United States—especially those who hide their political operations behind the mask of Faith-Based Initiatives. We're going to talk about how the age of ignoring the true race-based motives of the state is ending, and what that means going forward. Some years ago, I used this text as part of an article I published. (Apologies for being the first to mention Christmas on 7th May 2025.) "My mother who never went abroad in her life was the owner of a passport. It was called Christmas, and it marked the completion of one journey and the beginning of another. To her, Christmas was a way of saying we've arrived, we're here, we've come through. Poverty, illness, worries, bills, all the dangers, the reefs, the storms, we're past. We were at anchor in a lagoon of quiet water before again venturing upon the high seas. And, like all passports, Christmas was not to be tampered with. Safely dwelt in its unwavering sameness. Every moment of the day itself was a re-run of the same moment a year ago and would itself be repeated a year hence." Hugh Leonard - Short Story Christmas Time Machine Back then, when I had the first draft of the article ready, I had Grammarly check the text (an excellent tool for those like me who could be better at spelling and grammar). The poor program nearly had heart failure (if computers have hearts?) and told me everything about the paragraph was incorrect. Today, I pasted the paragraph into an AI platform, and it said the following "The passage is evocative and metaphorically rich, but a few tweaks could enhance its clarity, flow, and emotional impact. Here are some suggestions:" Am I going to let AI correct one of Ireland's best-loved writers? No way! Too often, when I'm coaching clients for an important presentation they keep insisting that they need a script. Here is my reply: Scripts are for actors, yet the best actors always want to reduce the text. They know that a gesture or a change of tone can impart more meaning than memorising and delivering lines. Years ago, there was a famous Northern Ireland comedian, Frank Carson, whose catch phrase was "It's the way I tell 'em" The same applies whether you are looking to create a presentation to inform, bring about a change, or win sales and investment. It's the way I tell them - still applies. I coach people to have a conversation with their audience. Converse with people, and they will listen and more importantly engage with you. Here is an excellent piece of advice from one of Obama's speechwriters, David Litt, in his book, 'THANKS, OBAMA' "People hate words and love pictures" I would suggest that words, when used correctly, can create pictures. The secret is to add detail to your conversation. Please reread Hugh Leonard's opening to his short story, and you will understand what I mean. By Executive Coach Andrew Keogh of Aristo.ie
Joost & Jesse gingen erover in gesprek.
I regularly say to groups I speak to that your education gets you the interview, and your ability to tell your story gets you the job. In the time after you get the job, if it's a leadership role, you will be evaluated by your ability to engage with and influence your team. In the time after you get the job, if it's a leadership role, you will be evaluated by your ability to engage with and influence your team. Speak UP: We confer values and abilities on people who have good communication skills. For example, might I suggest American presidents Presidents who long after they finished their term of office are still often quoted. ~ John F. Kennedy - Inaugural Address ~ "And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man". ~ Ronald Reagan ~ "Are you better off today than you were four years ago" A great election slogan - creatively swiped by another American President recently. ~ Barack Obama ~ "Cynicism is a choice. Hope is a better choice." My Favourite Speakers: In Ireland, I have my personal heroes, people capable of engaging and holding an audience in their palm. BIG Jim Larkin. (As depicted in Strumpet City written by James Plunkett, the first novel about Ireland I read, and still one of my favourites. John B Keane Tony O'Reilly Brendan Gleeson Mary O'Rourke The recent presidents of Ireland: ~ Mary Robinson ~ "Feel empowered. And if you start to do it, if you start to feel your voice heard, you will never go back". ~ Mary McAleese ~ "Change starts with us; we must be the change we want to see in the world". ~ Michael D. Higgins ~ "Now it is time to turn to an older wisdom that, while respecting material comfort and security as a basic right of all, also recognises that many of the most valuable things in life cannot be measured". The days of the great orators who could rouse a large gathering of people onto the public streets and into action are gone. Without a doubt, the presentation style and situations have changed, but the need for good communication is now an even greater requirement. The noise and distractions are greater than ever before, and you can be the person who steps up and demonstrates your ability to speak and represent your values. Step up to the mark: In your personal life, you will be called upon to speak at important business and personal events weddings, funerals, retirement parties etc. Situations that are critical to get right not only for yourself but for the people you are speaking to. You can refuse to be the person who accepts such challenges and probably become the hurler on the ditch at the event. Or, you can step forward, show leadership and be the person people want to hear. If you are the person who wishes to take Obamas advice and resist cynicism while providing hope, find a coach who can help you find your voice and tell your story. It's true, the man on the weather forecast said it. It's the end of winter! It's spring! I'm going to increase my output. I'm coming out of hibernation. I was listening to an expert on the TV say that most animals who hibernate do not go into a deep sleep for the winter. They cuddle up somewhere cosy and reduce their heart rate, conserving energy to get them through the cold season. On occasions, they will wake up and stroll about if the weather is mild and then return to their cosy nest. I have done some of that with the occasional whiskey in front of a warm fire and enjoyed what we in Ireland would call the bad weather. Yet, even in the bad weather, I've enjoyed walks and golf every Sunday (in good or bad weather, mostly bad), and all done in the company of family and friends. Winter is not so bad after all. Níl aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin (There's no fireside like your own fireside) Now, I'm going to get a spring in my step, and I suggest you do the same. By Executive Coach Andrew Keogh of Aristo.ie
"What's occurring?" is an expression regularly used in one of my favourite TV shows, which finally ended this Christmas. Gavin and Stacey was one of those shows where you cared about everybody. When discussing the show with people, you realised that the characters' names were on the tip of their tongues, and each person had their own favourite. This is the sign of a good storyline created by great writers who have developed fully rounded characters. People you care about, as opposed to cardboard characters you see in lots of movies and TV programmes. Of course, none of the above would be possible without a cast of actors who could put flesh on the bones of each person. I would have liked to have attended one of their house parties on the show. They were great events full of music, laughter and bonhomie! The Irish House party: When I listen to Irish people discussing their childhood, they all remember the house parties where everyone sang and played a musical instrument, even if it was just the humble comb with some paper wrapped around it. These were times when, as they would say now, we had nothing, but managed to enjoy ourselves from time to time. All that was needed was an excuse: the afters of a wedding, a funeral, friends and family up for the match, a christening. We just want to get together to provide some short-term relief from the Ireland of our past. It would appear now that "we're a great little country", but we need to be careful not to forget who we are and where we came from. When did you last have a group at your home for an evening of fun and music? The event I'm talking about does not need to be a significant, costly event which requires a lot of time and effort. Why not have some friends and relatives over for a beer, wine, and snacks. With just a plate of sandwiches or very dodge pizzas, (Tayto cheese and onion constitutes a snack), tell some stories, perhaps sing a few songs, recite your favourite poem or reminisce about family and friends. Now, I hear the objection: we can't drink and drive, and of course, you can't. But you could hop in a taxi, the cost would still be less than an indifferent meal in a pub or restaurant, which provides little or no interaction or stimulating conversation. Come on, take the plunge! Tell people what's occurring and have a good time for yourself and those you who have not seen in an age. By Executive Coach Andrew Keogh of Aristo.ie
As a result of reading Dale Carnegie's book "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living" and then going on to be a Dale Carnegie Inc. advocation coach, thankfully I have had a positive outlook for most of the time in my life. Or, as the song says and Monty Python sings, "always look on the bright side of life". Do what I personally do to help improve difficult situations: Turn your lemons into lemonade. Ask yourself what is the worst that can happen, accept the worst and then move on to look at how you can improve on the worst situation. Example: Golfers regularly say something like this, and what's more, they say it out loud. "Don't go into the water!" My suggestion, along with the best golfing coaches and sports psychologists, is to recommend that you visualise and verbalise your ball landing in the middle of the fairway. Which thought is most likely to succeed? Here is some advice to help you present with increased confidence in 2025: I hear people give this advice to people who are nervous before speaking to an audience. "Imagine your audience is naked." I know this advice would be of little help in overcoming nervousness, and it will likely be distracting. I advise speakers to mingle and chat with their audience, rather than nervously go over their talk's opening lines, which will take your mind off your content and onto the most important participants, your audience. How to start? When coaching people to present, my first job is to stop them starting with some form of apology. "The dog ate my homework!" "I would have liked more time to prepare" etc. "I'm not sure why they asked me to give this talk." My advice is to create a strong opening line, think HEADLINE. Then, memorise it and deliver it with confidence and energy. Example: Barack Obama spoke to thousands of people in College Green Dublin in 2011. His opening comment was, "Hello, I am Barack O'Bama, and I have come to Ireland to find the missing apostrophe in my name". This opening made a positive impression. "I need a script": Do not think I must have a script; scripts are for actors. I hear you cry "but I will forget something". So what? Nobody will know but you! Worry: Perhaps worry, it's an Irish trait, as we are generally too hard on ourselves. In the past, our parents and teachers invariably played a part in our lack of a positive outlook. I believe this situation is now improving. Affirmations to try out: Act enthusiastic, and you will be enthusiastic. Fake it till you make it! My best advice: STOP delivering speeches, lectures and sermons; those days are gone. Think conversation; audiences will love you and engage with you when you speak to them in a conversational way. Action for 2025 Upgrade all your communications. People we email, we should phone. People we phone, we should meet. People we meet for lunch, we should meet for dinner. By Executive Coach Andrew Keogh of Aristo.ie
Why does everybody think they're a presentation coach? Just think about it! Look at your own life. Remember your parents' advice: stand up straight, speak slower, do not mumble, and be sure to have eye contact. Perhaps you now pass that 'sage' advice to your children and work colleagues. I was at a pitch event recently, and the three people who spoke had good business ideas. However, after the event, when talking to people in the network part of the evening, people who knew me and what I do wanted to share their comments and thoughts about the speaker's presentation style. Their Comments: The entrepreneurs spoke too quickly. They spent too much time talking to their slides with their backs to the audience, particularly the judges. Spoke too softly etc.; you know the drill. Nobody spoke to me about the excellent business ideas, some of which already have significant sales. Why does everybody think they can do my job? I just wanted to get that issue off my chest. Now, let's focus on you and provide some advice when presenting. Where do we start? Bring your audience back into the room; often, they may be in the room but not engaged. Audience: preparation We start with the audience: who are they? Be sure to research your audience in advance on LinkedIn their websites. If all else fails, ask somebody who knows them. In particular, research the judges when presenting at a pitch event. Problem: People will pay to have their problems solved, but you must demonstrate a depth of knowledge of their issues. The best way to do this is by telling a problem story demonstrating your expertise/experience in your chosen marketplace. Here is how Diarmuid O' Muirghesa, a schoolteacher and CEO of Olus Education, did that on the night: Open: His Opening remarks: "We are all told young people are digital natives, isn't that what we all think? Diarmuid says young people do not even have keyboard skills, never mind the ability to code or be creative on their computer." He got my attention and interest. Did he get yours? A Pitch needs to cover all the following: The Problem / The Market / The Team / The Solution and several other topics. However, you are unlikely to reengage people later unless you get your audience's attention immediately. P.S. Talk to acquaintances or friendly faces in your audience, it will put you at ease and increase audience engagement. Recently, I went to an inspiring event created and hosted by Eve Earley, one of the most interesting and inspiring people I know. The event was a 'SPEAK' event where nine people spoke on the topic of 'uncertainty'. These people were not professional speakers and, in most cases, did not see themselves in that role. However, they were engaging, inspiring and highly informative on their chosen topic. Each spoke from the heart, and you could hear a pin drop. Such was the level of engagement. Be believable: People often ask me what's the secret of being a good speaker, and my answer is "Be believable". All these speakers were believable, each in their own way. The variety is what made the evening so engaging and yet so enjoyable. As one of my colleagues said when driving back to Dublin, imagine how wonderful it would be if business conferences and meetings could be as powerful and inspiring as the event we have just attended. Amen to that comment! Here is my advice to people who would like to speak out, be it to one, five or five hundred. Tell a story you know to be true, and influenced who you are, and people will listen and take your ideas and advice on board. Now, that negative voice in your head says, you can't be that open and vulnerable? Yes, you can. People will be inspired and influenced by you when you do so. Recently, I attended a family wedding, and it was a most enjoyable day and evening. It was lovely to meet family, some of whom I had not seen in months and others for years. It is nice to see nieces and nephews who were children the last time you saw them and are now young adults in university, employed, and sometimes with their own families. Because of my job, people always ask me for my thoughts on the speeches, and wherever possible, I give a polite reply and change the subject. However, for the benefit of people who will have/want to speak at a wedding or other important family occasion, here are some general comments which are applicable to most family occasions. Unless you are a brilliant joke teller and sober, avoid telling jokes at all costs. Someone is always offended (Madison Square Garden "Island of Garbage") You need to work on preparing your speech; this takes hours over several weeks. Find a quiet space, talk to yourself (out loud) and time yourself. Ten minutes is always enough; otherwise, by the time all the top table speak, the total time is often an hour or more. This is not how your guests wish to spend their day. Also, the kitchen will be much happier as the meal will not be ruined as the talks go on and on and on. Enjoy hot food: I remember some years ago, a proud father stood up to speak about his daughter. The talk started on the day she was born and covered every major and minor event in her life up to the wedding day. Fifty-five minutes later, he sat down exhausted, and so were we. On another occasion, I have seen the bride's father deliver a well-prepared and humorous speech, which went down well with his buddies from the Golf Club, but he neglected to mention his daughter - OOPs! Bestman: You are at a family wedding where offence can often be taken, so do not tell the stories you would tell over a few pints in the pub or on the stags. Groom: Be sure to tell your wife how fortunate and happy you feel and how well she is looking on the day. Do not read your script; just tell her if you want to sound sincere. For all other speakers, be brief. Key people at the top table, maximum time ten minutes all others less than five, time yourself in advance, otherwise you will be the person the guests talked about for the rest of the day for all the wrong reasons. P.S. It's perfectly acceptable to have a small piece of paper with key words written down. If you are going to read your speech, which I do not recommend, be sure to have your glasses with you. The picture above has been hanging on my office wall for over twenty years. Some people I have engaged with online have commented on the image and enquired about how it came to be hanging there. My father brought this print home from some school he was renovating when I was just a child. Perhaps the teachers misunderstood the message when this picture was hanging on classroom walls. As probably in their own lives, they had experienced cruelty. We've all heard adults say if they went home and told the parents that the teacher slapped them, the response was you must have deserved it, and you got another slap on the ear or worse. We have a 17-year-old dog, Sadie. (17 x 7) That's old. She was a rescue dog and badly treated by the previous owner. She will still not eat her food if you are standing close by. We must come inside and close the door before she starts to eat, which she does with an ear always cocked. The memory of being badly treated lasts forever, be it dog or human. The picture message is simple: look after your people and provide a good working environment; you will get the best out of them for your business and personally. I provide coaching/training to many businesses to practise the principles espoused in this image. The only proviso I would have to my previous comments would be something that employees suggest can happen. They are provided with good spaces to work, good food, and fitness facilities on-site, encouraging people to stay at work longer with little work-life balance. The skills leaders will realise that tired and weary employees will just go through the motions with reduced ability and opportunity to bring creativity to their role. My advice is to continue to provide good working environments, then send your people home to relax with their families and friends, and return to the office refreshed and full of creativity. N.B. This means no contact after working hours unless in an emergency. Emergencies are something that happens once or twice a year, not every other day. My Advice: In my previous writing, I have mentioned that I trained as a coach for Dale Carnegie Inc., founded by the author of "How to Win Friends and Influence People'. The three fundamental principles of this book are: Don't criticise, condemn or complain Give honest, sincere appreciation Arouse in the other person an eager want. The only way to get a person to willingly do something is to use these principles. By Executive Coach Andrew Keogh of Aristo.ie
It's a costly business to employ customer-facing personnel. (This article will improve their effectiveness) Nobody cares about what you do until you tell them why they should care and how you can benefit them. Can you do this quickly? This is what good movies and TV shows do. If the director does not engage you in the story early on, it's unlikely they will later. There are more films, TV series and channels than ever before, which reminds me of the line from Bruce Springsteen's song "57 channels and nothing on" How many programmes on 'The Box' in the corner have you started watching but have not engaged with, and you have switched to another channel? My wife has a fail-safe method of judging such shows. Some minutes after the programme starts, she is asleep! I am usually more tolerant and hopeful than her, but invariably, her critique is the right one. There is an old Bob Hope joke I like, which explains what I'm talking about. "When speaking to an audience, I do not mind them looking at their watches, but when they start tapping their face, it's time to stop." Create a good first impression: As customer-facing people, our job is to get and hold attention immediately. When I started in sales as a young man, a much more experienced older man in the company was very helpful to me. Back then, when preparing to meet customers in different counties in Ireland, he purchased the local county newspaper in Eason's Book Shop on a Monday morning. He would then read up on all the latest local GAA results and head off to meet his customers. Happy in the knowledge that he has a conversation opener and a surefire way of engaging his customers. He knew how to get people's attention by talking about what was of interest/ important to them. My best advice: If your job is closing deals, talk about your audience's problems, not your offering. Ideally, shortly after the meeting starts, they need to be doing the talking, and you all of the listening. There's an old but true cliche: we are given two ears to listen and one mouth to speak. It requires confidence to stay quiet and allow other people to talk. When nervous, we tend to babble on. When it's your turn to talk: When you engage with others, you should be talking about the benefits (not the features) of your offering and how their organisation will be better as a result of your intervention. It's a costly business to employ customer-facing personnel: They are generally better paid and have more costs, e.g., travel/ accommodation, entertainment, etc. So they must deliver your business message in a clear, effective, and engaging way that immediately resonates with the person they are meeting, whether online or in person. People with little knowledge or understanding about the problem their prospective client needs to solve must do the following or choose another career. You must research and prepare; otherwise, you're wasting your prospective business partner's time and yours. We now believe we are much more sophisticated (than my man who talked GAA) and have a myriad of tools to help us prepare before meeting a prospective client. The latest is AI. What Would Help: If you or your team are experiencing some of the issues discussed above, find a coach who can help you create conversational meetings focused on your audience's needs. I'm sitting in my office listening to my clock ticking, and suddenly, I am back in my Aunt Kitty and Uncle Mick's house in Bloomfield, Red Pat's Cross, Tomnalossett (what a lovely address), my mother's family home, and I am filled with good memories of sunny summer days. This is where I went for my summer holidays from my first day out of school to the beginning of September when I reluctantly returned to Dublin. One of my many chores was to fetch water in two big buckets from a spring well a couple of hundred yards up the road (back then, they did not have metres). Whichever measuring scale you use, it's a long way for a small boy to carry two full buckets of water, which would spill on my legs and drip into my shoes. Each morning, when I fill the kettle for breakfast, I am reminded of the great gift of clean drinking water coming out of a tap. Back then, people did not need to be taught how to recycle. My aunt would get three uses out of the water firstly for drinking or to make tea. Not fully drunk glasses or cups of water would be emptied into another bucket and used for boiling potatoes and other vegetables. That water was then put into a third bucket, which she called the slops bucket, and it would be added to the animal's food or for general cleaning around the yard. Back home in Dublin, the children of the family who lived beside us used to sell penny bundles of small sticks for fire lighting; they would cut up old bicycle tyres to be used as elastic bands for each bundle. Back in the day, everything was recycled. Do you remember glass bottles being delivered and collected from your doorstep? In Ireland, we have been recycling glass bottles for some time and recently implemented a return system for products with the R symbol on the packaging. There are currently many complaints about the collection system, which no doubt will be ironed out in time, and we will be better as a nation as we relearn how to recycle and reuse. Learn not to resist change; embrace it in private and business life. P.S. In many ways, Ireland would have been much better sooner if we had followed Berlin and not Boston. Who told Ronnie Drew, Shane McGowan, Tom Waits or Lisa O'Neill they could sing? They are not singers in the classical sense, but they can hold a tune and, more importantly, tell a story that engages an audience. Good communicators have all types of voices, accents and varying levels of education, yet you want to hear from them and engage with them. "Use the talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best" Henry Van Dyke Think about your favourite singers; they are probably not your partner's favourites. I know that over the dinner table in our house, we have frequent discussions about the music playing in the background of our conversations. I persist with my choices, and thankfully, if people do not like the singer or the song, it will not be long before another track rolls in, thanks to streaming services. In the same way, I have potential clients who do not want to hear the message I want to deliver to their audience. So, I must choose my audience, knowing that my message and style will not resonate with everyone. Thankfully, enough people like my coaching and training style, which is about building confidence by pointing out what they do well when speaking to an audience. When I do this, people will try a little harder and be prepared to take risks and grow in the process. P.S. Everyone can be a good communicator in the same way that everyone can sing or hold a tune, given support and encouragement. Recently, I was asked to help a team of students prepare a pitch important for them and their college. The college had previously entered this competition for several years but was never shortlisted to present at the final pitch competition. Initially, I helped the team and their professor prepare a video pitch to promote their business idea. As a result, they were selected to pitch along with seven other teams at the final event. To be clear, I helped them tell their story, which was a very exciting solution with world-changing possibilities for the industry for which they had created their solution. They did not win; they did not even make the top three. Their idea was way too big and did not fulfil the criteria of the organisers. Good News: However, after the awards announcement, my team was approached by a senior manager from Enterprise Ireland who saw the value and opportunity in their business idea, and he has already engaged further. "The first shall be last and the last shall be first, depending on the day." What do I do for entrepreneurs? I regularly advise my clients to take every opportunity to present their business stories, as you never know who will be in the audience. In most colleges and accelerator programmes, they work with entrepreneurs over several months to build a business profile using the 'Lean Canvas' or some other such template. This type of work is invaluable but is also very left brain (academic) and in some way, hard work, particularly for people with a creative entrepreneurial bent. During this period, I work with individuals and teams to turn the facts and figures into a story they could tell that excites them and potential investors, partners, and, most importantly, prospective customers. The pitch needs to blend business reality and a vision that will excite people to want to engage further. In the very early stage, all you may have is a vision. Keep going; the ones who succeed invariably have a very strong vision. By Executive Coach Andrew Keogh of Aristo.ie
It should not be the day before, and you should not be pulling out your previous slide deck, changing the title slide, or doing what you usually do, talk about your business or product. If you wish to be a memorable and successful communicator, you must continually read and listen to radio, TV and the myriads of podcasts that can provide content to improve your engagement with the audience. Stand out from the crowd: Stop being the person with slides full of bullet points. What you say must inform the audience. If you are honest with yourself, the bullet points help you remember what you will say. An even bigger sin is to stand reading the slides with your back to the audience. School teachers used to do this in the past, but now they are much more interactive. What to do in the time before delivering your talk: Arrive early and check out the room. Where will I stand? Are my slides uploaded? Avoid using video in your deck, if possible; more often than not the video will not work on the day. Also, ask yourself, do you want your audience's attention focused on you or the video? Always, always bring your presentation on a 'memory stick' as a backup. Do not stand backstage in a quiet corner stressing about your talk while becoming increasingly anxious. My advice to all my clients is as follows: Engage with your audience beforehand; talk to two or three people, nothing specific, just chat. Before going on stage, note where they're sitting and initially talk to them. Ideally, remember their names to mention during your presentation. Everyone loves to get a name check. The above will help to reduce stress for you and your audience. Recently, I turned up to hear how a group of customer-facing "Business Development Managers" (BDM's) told the story of their business. What happened was as I expected. They immediately launched into what they do and the product/service they provide. Why do they do this? It's where they're comfortable and confident as product specialists. It's what they've always done. It's what the prospect expects! They think this is how you win business - it's not! Is that what the customer wants? Yes, but much later in the meeting when they've built a relationship with you. How should this type of business meeting start? My personal favourite is to start with a question. "In order for me to understand what are your concerns, is it OK if I ask you some questions"? This question, or a version thereof, is a great conversation opener. "Please explain to me the problem you are experiencing currently". In this part of the meeting the person opposite should be doing most of the talking, with you asking questions to understand their issue and teasing out the key concerns of the person you're talking to. Next: Once you have ascertained this person's problem that you believe you can solve, you can then move on to telling him a little about yourself and your organisation. Note: You do not tell this person everything you do; continue to focus on what you can offer to provide a solution to this particular problem.) Bring the meeting to a close: When you have done the above, recap the problem briefly, get the person to agree that your understanding is correct, and then paint a word picture of how their situation will improve as a result of your intervention. Finally, agree upon the next action: Who is doing what, and by when? E.g., send a proposal, ask them to visit a similar project you recently completed, send a sample, visit your showrooms, and discuss dates for commencement. Finally, agree on the date of when you'll next get together (before you leave the meeting). REMEMBER: The Number One failure of all meeting leaders is to agree on an action. With no action agreed, it will be like starting all over again. It requires a great deal of planning, effort, and cost to finally get the opportunity to talk to a prospective customer in person or online. In recent years, there's been a reluctance on behalf of people to meet up. Online conversations have helped facilitate such meetings, but obviously, It's never a replacement for face-to-face engagement. First Step: Like most companies, you have people whose job is to search the web, seeking out businesses who would be good customers for your organisation. They then make the initial introductions with the hope of getting a meeting with your ideal contact within the organisation. Second Step: This conversation is then generally passed on to a more experienced and possibly more technical person to initiate a deeper discussion and gain an understanding of how you can be a benefit to this organisation. Therefore, this person needs to deliver a very sharp focused, structured presentation that is on the money (Which now appears to be the current phrase in vogue.) Do you monitor your success rate for these higher-level conversational opportunities? Or do your people just turn up online and say "it will be alright on the night", as they say in the theatre. But you must remember that in the theatre, the actor has a script, a familiar stage and knows precisely where to be in the script, and located on the stage at every moment as they have rehearsed repeatedly. Third Step: I provide my clients with a template structure that lets them know where they are in the conversation at any given time and yet be flexible enough to accommodate the other parties' needs and requirements. "Using travel as an analogy, are you just getting into your car and heading off, hoping you arrive at your destination, or are you using satellite navigation? Sat Nav allows you to start by identifying where you are. Select where you want to end up while being aware of the key points on the journey, getting you there most efficiently and effectively". I help companies increase sales and win investment by telling stories that engage their audience, allowing them to see the value of what you offer in a clearer, more succinct way. Several programmes on which I have coached entrepreneurs to tell the world about their business ideas concluded in the last few weeks. In watching my proteges present, it was very clear to me that the person who has the courage to stand up and speak out should be encouraged and praised, as it is not easy to tell the story of your new business to people who you believe are more successful and experienced than you. Yet, it's what you must do as your business moves forward. You will tell your business story to prospects, customers, suppliers, team members and investors regularly, if not daily. The founder's primary job is demonstrating leadership and confidence when engaging with people and asking the right question This responsibility cannot be delegated to others. It is your role for the entirety of the life of the business. The teams who won funding and, on several occasions, significant amounts of money, were the ones who demonstrated the traits that all good communicators demonstrate. What are these traits? When speaking to an audience, demonstrating the Three E-E-E Earned the right, Eager to share and Excited Continue to read, all will be revealed… Earn the right to speak on this topic. Talk to your audience about how you have experienced their problem, provide examples, and tell stories demonstrating your expertise. When they start nodding their heads, making eye contact and asking relevant questions, you have engaged. What I usually hear/see is the following: Here is our product, and here are lots of facts, features, graphs and slides. Boring, now everyone is looking at their screens, not yours. Excited to talk on the topic Have a conversation that excites you and your audience. (Regularly, people say they are excited, but their voice and body language do not support their words.) Eager to share: Have an opening line that gets attention immediately, e.g. Once upon a time in a far off land Getting your audience's immediate attention is the critical skill all good presenters seek. Do this by walking in your audience's shoes, being one of them. Never start with some form of apology, e.g. I do not like speaking in public. I am very nervous. (Everybody is nervous when speaking in public. There is no need to tell the audience, just get on with it) To finish, here is great advice, creatively swiped from one of my clients. (Thanks Ian) Ian told me the best piece of business advice he ever received was from his father (also a successful businessman) When you are talking, you're selling. When they're talking, they are buying. By Executive Coach Andrew Keogh of Aristo.ie See more breaking stories here.
Before Christmas, my wife (Jean) and I were invited to a client's celebration dinner, which was hosted to mark a significant company milestone. No expense was spared, and a wonderful night was had by all. Why am I telling you this? Because of something my client (the MD), whom I have known for some ten years, said when introducing me to her family. "This is Andrew; he's been very helpful to me personally and the team in general, but I never know how to describe what he does." The conversation moved on, and so did this most enjoyable evening. Over the following days, and in particular over the holiday break, this comment played on my mind. Why could this person not articulate what I do? Then it struck me that in the beginning, when I founded Aristo, I struggled to explain what I did before really realising it's not what I do that I should talk about. You and I should always talk about the results of what we do. In my case, I give people increased confidence. Whether it's: To take on a new role which will stretch you. Tell an audience how you believe things should be done differently. Become an entrepreneur and start your own business. Help people to buy your product or service. Pitch for investment to a bank or investment house. In my role as a coach, this is how I help people. I capture your business story and give you the confidence to tell or sell it. Why do you need to top up your confidence levels? If you tell yourself you have all the confidence you need, it's more likely to be bravado than confidence. My clients range from successful CEOs to entrepreneurs taking their first tentative steps to people who wish to add value to society but do not have the confidence to step up. Here are the three questions I ask every new client to give some thought to before we work together. Who do you want to hear your story? (audience) What problem do you solve for this person or persons? How will your audience be better? Helping people identify and realise the skills they have that will solve their audience's problems while giving them the confidence to articulate their knowledge in a non-boastful way is what I do. I coach you to paint word pictures of how your intervention solves the audience's problem. Epilogue: Talk honestly and openly to yourself and admit that there are areas where you could do with a little more confidence. Caleb and Michael talk about Seneca's 94th Letter to Lucilius. We think children are growing up much faster and are more informed about everything. Is this true? My friend's granddaughter started secondary school in September. She is a bright child full of life and involved in all sports and activities. And in recent times, she is never without a smartphone in her hands (restricted) Yes, at thirteen years old, her mother had to take her aside and break that (AWFUL) news to her to avoid any embarrassment in front of her new classmates. Perhaps children are not growing up as fast as we assume they are, and that should be a good thing. I remember my mother all those years ago telling me how I would come to realise that school days are the best days of your life. I am still not convinced, but growing up too quickly is not the alternative. To help you and me get into the spirit of Christmas, let me first provide you with a poem for the children in your life. It's by my favourite poet, Roger McGough. Why not add a poetry book to a child's Christmas stocking this Christmas? Any good bookshop will be willing to offer suggestions. My recommendation would be 'Pie in the Sky'. I have had this book by Roger McGough for years, and the child in me often seeks ideas and inspiration from between its pages. (read on) The Snowman Roger McGough Mother, while you were at the shops and I was snoozing in my chair I heard a tap at the window saw a snowman standing there He looks so cold and miserable I almost could have cried so I put the kettle on and invited him inside I made him a cup of cocoa to warm the cockles of his nose then he snuggled in front of the fire for a cosy little dose He lay there warm and smiling softly counting sheep I eavesdropped for a little while Then I too fell asleep Seems he woke and tiptoed out exactly when I'm not too sure It's a wonder you didn't see him as you came through the door (Oh, and by the way, the kitten made a puddle on the floor) For the last few years, I have spent time in August in Listowel, attending the Revive Festival and, after the festival, being entertained in JB Keanes Pub for the remainder of the night and now managed by his son Billy (a great publican, host, and author in his own right). For the Adults in your life (this could be you!) Here is an extract from John B. Keane's Christmas story entitled 'Many Years Ago' If the Christmas that came to our street were a person, he would be something like this: he would be in his 60s but glowing with rude health. His face would be flushed and chubby with sideburns down to the rims of his jaws. He will be wearing gators and a tweed suit and he would be mildly intoxicated. His pockets would be filled with silver coins for small boys and girls and for the older folk he would have a party at which he would preside with his waist coated paunch, extending benignly, and his posterior benefiting from the glow of a roaring log fire. But you see Christmas is an occasion not a person, A person can do things, change things, create things but all our occasions are only what we want them to be. My wish for you and me is that we could be that person over the Christmas Holidays. Thank you for reading my scribblings over the year and if you enjoy my stuff, could I ask you to gift this article to a friend or colleague? By Executive Coach Andrew Keogh of Aristo.ie
This and all episodes at: https://aiandyou.net/ . At the intersection of scientific research and artificial intelligence lies our guest Oren Etzioni, professor emeritus of Computer Science at the University of Washington and most notably the founding CEO of the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI2) in Seattle, founded by the late Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft. His awards include AAAI Fellow and Seattle's Geek of the Year. Oren grew the institute to a team of over 200 researchers and created singularly important tools such as the Semantic Scholar, search engine that can understand scientific literature, and Mosaic, a knowledge base formed by extracting scientific knowledge from text. This is hugely important because of just how much the rate of research paper creation now outstrips the ability of researchers to read it. AI could transform the productivity of scientific research by unprecedented measures. In this conclusion of the interview we talk about AI2's scientific assistance project called Aristo, Oren's views on the concerns about AI and how to address them, and his Hippocratic Oath for AI practitioners. All this plus our usual look at today's AI headlines. Transcript and URLs referenced at HumanCusp Blog.
Welcome to Episode 204 of Lucretius Today. This is a podcast dedicated to the poet Lucretius, who wrote "On The Nature of Things," the only complete presentation of Epicurean philosophy left to us from the ancient world. Each week we walk you through the Epicurean texts, and we discuss how Epicurean philosophy can apply to you today. If you find the Epicurean worldview attractive, we invite you to join us in the study of Epicurus at EpicureanFriends.com, where you will find a discussion thread for each of our podcast episodes and many other topics. This week we continue our discussion of Book Two of Cicero's On Ends, which is largely devoted Cicero's attack on Epicurean Philosophy. This week we move on through Section XIII, starting roughly here:... Well, this is directed against Aristippus, who accounts that pleasure which all of us alone call pleasure, to be not only the highest but the only form of pleasure; while your school holds different doctrine. But he, as I have said, is in fault; since neither the shape of the human body nor reason, preeminent among man's mental endowments, gives any indication that man came into existence for the sole purpose of enjoying pleasures. Nor indeed must we listen to Hieronymus, whose supreme good is the same as that on which your school sometimes or rather very often insists, absence of pain. For if pain is an evil it does not follow that to be free from that evil suffices to produce the life of happiness. Let Ennius rather speak thus: he has a vast amount of good who has no ill; let us estimate happiness not by the banishment of evil, but by the acquisition of good, and let us not seek this in inactivity, whether of a joyous kind, like that of Aristippus, or marked by absence of pain, like that of our philosopher, but in action of some sort and reflection. Now these arguments may be advanced in the same form against the Carneadean view of the supreme good, though he proposed it not so much with the purpose of securing approval as with the intention of combating the Stoics, against whom he waged war; his supreme good is however of such a nature that when joined to virtue it seems likely to exert influence and to furnish forth abundantly the life of happiness, with which subject our whole inquiry is concerned. Those indeed who join to virtue either pleasure, the thing of all others which virtue holds in least esteem, or the absence of pain, which though it is unassociated with evil, still is not the supreme good, make an addition which is not very plausible, yet I do not understand why they should carry out the idea in such a niggardly and narrow manner. For, as though they had to pay for anything which they join with virtue, they in the first place unite with her the cheapest articles, next they would rather add things singly than combine with morality all those objects to which nature had primarily given her sanction. And because these objects were held worthless by Pyrrho and Aristo, so that they said there was absolutely no distinction of value between the best possible health and the most serious illness, people have quite rightly ceased long ago to argue against these philosophers. For by determining that on virtue alone everything so entirely depends, that they robbed her of free selection from among these objects, and allowed her neither starting point nor foothold, they abolished that very virtue of which they were enamoured. Erillus again by assigning all importance to know- ledge, kept in view a single kind of good, but not the best kind nor one by whose aid life can possibly be steered. So he too was long ago cast into oblivion, for since the time of Chrysippus there have certainly been no discussions about him.

This Talmrin lady is a little weird, but strangely, it seems to fit with this crew. Now, what's the plan? And I wonder if Aristo is still good back at the ship? Do we think Red got dangerous on his ass? Time to find out. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/sqlr/support
This is part 6 of the Early Church History class. In the latter half of the second century, two kinds of Christians arose to defend the faith. On the one hand, apologists wrote defenses of Christianity directed at the Roman government. They responded to rumors, arguing that Christians were decent people who should be shown toleration. On the other hand, heresy hunters (or heresiologists) began to combat Christian groups that diverged significantly from apostolic Christianity, such as the Gnostics, Valentinians, and Marcionites. Today we'll briefly overview this fascinating period of Christianity when persuasion not coercion was the means to defeat one's opponents.
