Description: This month's JHBC selection, The Berry Pickers, by Nova Scotian author Amanda Peters has found a particularly receptive audience within book club communities, including the Jen Hatmaker Book Club, for exploring universal human emotions and experiences, and for  examining unique cultural perspectives.  By masterfully blending her father's compelling stories as a Maine berry picker with her own extensive career in Indigenous governance, The Berry Pickers delves into a unique and original plot surrounding a Mi'kmaw family that grapples with the corrosive effects of guilt and shame, and the possibility of redemption. Peters reveals how the debut novel initially took shape as a short story, but as the beautifully-flawed characters and tendrilled themes began to unfold, the narrative organically expanded into the full-fledged novel that it is now, which has been translated into an impressive 22 languages and has been awarded the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction.  Thought-provoking Quotes: I couldn't have written this story when I was 21 because I didn't have all of the life experience that I have now. – Amanda Peters Fiction readers are just better people because literature is about the human condition; it helps us develop empathy.  – Amanda Peters I love the writing process. I love creating a story. I love that high you get when you get it just right, when a sentence does exactly what I want it to do. – Amanda Peters Resources Mentioned in This Episode: The Berry Pickers: A Novel by Amanda Peters - https://amzn.to/4hAYfUM Waiting for the Long Night Moon: Stories by Amanda Peters - https://amzn.to/4hGNTTw John Steinbeck books - https://amzn.to/4c1B1pJ John Steinbeck Center - https://steinbeck.org/ Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction - https://www.ala.org/carnegie-medals/2024-winners Pearly Everlasting: A Novel by Tammy Armstrong - https://amzn.to/420or5r All the Young Men by Ruth Coker Burks - https://amzn.to/420oT3D What Strange Paradise: A novel by Omar El Akkad - https://amzn.to/4kXs8l6 Guest's Links: Website - https://amandapetersauthor.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/amandapetersauthor/ Twitter - https://x.com/amandapetersaut?lang=en Connect with Jen! While Charlotte is already looking at wedding venues in the UK, Helli has finally found an apartment without mould in Vietnam. But together this week we're talking about the value of small, gentle goals and how our mindset towards tangible, measurable goals has shifted over the last year. Big New Year goals can often lead to more stress, but gentle goals are all about a "better you" without giving you more on your plate to stress about - those 1% changes each day that build a foundation for the bigger goals further down the line. Derek and Kieran are honored to talk to Ruth Coker Burks. Ruth is a former caregiver for AIDS victims and an AIDS awareness advocate based in Hot Springs, Arkansas, USA.  During the AIDS epidemic in the late 1980's, she used her salary as a real estate agent to care for AIDS patients whose families and communities had abandoned them. Due to the stigma surrounding the disease at the time, she was often the patients' only caregiver until they eventually died. Ruth came to the aid of Jimmy, a young man dying of AIDS in hospital. She noticed no one would go into the room to bring his medication or food. The moment Ruth entered Jimmy's room and soothed him as he died, her life and that of countless other men would change forever. Ruth is additionally recognized for burying more than forty AIDS victims in her family cemetery and helping those struggling to get assistance with housing, medication and to die with dignity and someone to call a friend. A truly remarkable lady who has recently released her memoir, All the Young Men, with her co writer, Kevin Carr O' Leary. For natural extrovert Damian Barr, lockdown has presented a new set of challenges. Without being able to enjoy unplanned, unscheduled interactions and the layers of connection we have in our normal life, he's had to learn how to live in the present and slow down. In this brilliantly insightful and honest chat, we speak to Damian about how he has coped with the past year, and how, having lived through the Aids pandemic of the 80s and 90s, and survived a traumatic childhood, he was unusually well equipped to deal with the immediate emergencies thrown at us by Covid. Damian also opens up about his experience of online bullying on social media last summer – and how a forced break from digital platforms has led him to entirely reassess his relationship with social media, consider what he puts online and also rediscover a love of speaking on the phone. He also talks about why he's gone back into therapy and how he's approaching 2021 (it's about dreams, not plans). Thanks so much to Damian for talking to us – we hope you enjoy it.
