A bill in the Oregon Legislature would set up a structure for social media companies to compensate local news producers whose content is shared on those sites. SB 686 is based in part on bills in California and New Jersey, as well as a law that recently went into effect in Canada. It was meant for the largest social media companies to compensate local news media organizations whose content is shared on the platforms — thus supporting news outlets, many which have seen advertising revenues plummet. But the law has had some unintended consequences, including Meta simply deciding not to allow news to be shared at all in Canada. Joining us to talk about the law's intentions, its unintended consequences and possible solutions is Ryan Adam, formerly the vice president of government and public relationships for the Toronto Star. He led efforts to pass the country’s Online News Act, also known as the C-18 law, and testified in Salem in April about Canada’s law. OPB is among the news media organizations that testified in support of the Oregon bill.

It's been a busy last half of the summer for us dorky dads, so let's go ahead and contribute the dearth of new episodes to that, why don't we? It definitely wasn't procrastination, or being tired, or lack of interest, or guests cancelling on us. Though, all of those factors play into this most recent episode! In the absence of a guest, Ryan & Adam just sit down and chew the fat about what they do at their 9-5's, a little pop culture, and some cool things that our friends did for each other recently. We hope this tides you over until we get a fresh, new guest in for an interview. Which will be soon...we promise. In the meantime, we want your suggestions! Email us or drop us a line on Twitter or our Facebook page (links below). Who should we have on the pod? We have some ideas for our next few but we want to hear your thoughts! Brian and Bill sit down to talk about Ryan Adam's first foray away from alt-country and into the world of rock and roll with his appropriately titled album Rock n Roll (2003, Lost Highway). Following the success of his previous album and its single "New York, New York," Adams submitted 5 attempts that his label turned down. As a final "screw you," he made this album as, both a wry nod at their desire for something more marketable and a not-so-subtle response to their request for something less alternative. Bill and Brian talk about what makes this album great despite not changing the face of rock and roll, Brian's college years yearning for a certain girls, how the album neatly separates in to 4 distinct parts, and how the tracklist seems to tell a particular story of a crazy night in NYC.
