In 2024, the University of New South Wales (UNSW) held a panel discussion on Degrowth as part of their Centre for Ideas series. The panellists were Tommy Wiedmann (Professor of Sustainability Research), Bronwen Morgan (Professor of Law and member of NENA), and Sabrina Chakori (CSIRO researcher). The discussion was hosted by former Deputy Lord Mayor and author of Glimpses of Utopia, Jess Scully. The panel explored sustainability and the urgent challenge of ensuring human needs are met without compromising a sustainable and inclusive future. With the kind permission of UNSW Centre for Ideas, the recording of this panel discussion is now available to listen to on the Post-Growth Australia Podcast (PGAP). Tommy Wiedmann has been a supporter of PGAP since our early days in 2021, so it was great to hear him in his element, sharing his research, knowledge, and ideas on Degrowth. We really appreciate Tommy and panel host Jess Scully giving PGAP a shout-out towards the end of the talk. We hope to return the favour by sharing this insightful discussion, which serves as an excellent introduction to Degrowth for those new to the topic. It is encouraging to see Degrowth becoming an openly discussed subject in Australian universities. Tommy also wrote a very encouraging review for PGAP on Apple Podcast (https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/post-growth-australia-podcast/id1522194099). We warmly invite you to add your review. This will help to broaden our outreach and encourage new listeners. Please also feel welcome to contact us (https://pgap.fireside.fm/contact) with your feedback or suggestions for future episode topics. Co-hosts Mark Allen (https://holisticactivism.net/) and Michael Bayliss (https://michaelbayliss.org/)share their thoughts on the panel discussion in the introduction and conclusion. For the most part, we align with the perspectives of the four panellists, but we also provide additional thoughts on how the Degrowth movement can incorporate concerns around population, which we briefly touch on in our commentary. For a more in-depth analysis, we encourage you to read the PGAP blog: “To populate or not to populate? How we can come together around the eternal debate of everyone's favourite vexed issue. (https://pgap.fireside.fm/articles/population)” We also encourage listening to two recent PGAP episodes on population, including Anne Poelina (https://pgap.fireside.fm/annepoelinapatron), who brings a First Nations' perspective to the debate, and Isaac Kabongo (https://pgap.fireside.fm/isaaceco), who brings a Ugandan/Global South perspective. Regarding the discussion on population, Tommy cited two particularly relevant scientific articles, which are well worth reading: Lamb, W. Happy International Women's Day, one of my favourite days of the year! While of course, we deserve to be celebrated every day of the year, I always love the way this day encourages amazing conversations, displays of support for each other and even just telling someone in your close circle that you love and appreciate having them in your life. This year, it's meant even more to me as I tippy toe right on the doorstep of motherhood - I've always been a raging feminist but I've never had more appreciation for the strength and resilience of women than experiencing pregnancy. We are fierce, powerful and even more so when we unite together so happy IWD to you all and to the allies who love and support the women in their lives. Even though we dropped a chaotic #yaysofourlives ep just a few days ago, I've got a special guest for the occasion patching in from stateside! As you know, we've been lucky to partner with Sunpower and have had the most amazing transition to solar energy, so today we have their Chief Legal & Sustainability Officer on the show, Lindsey Wiedmann. Not only does she have a fascinating, unpredictable way to yay as you know we love from a Bachelor of Science to a postgrad in Law to project finance at a law firm before her current role, she also has fascinating insights on life as a woman in the traditionally male dominated energy sector. I'll let her tell you the rest herself, but hope you enjoy! The third season of Star Trek: Picard had a lot on its shoulders: It was the final season of its show, as well as a bombastic, blockbuster-level bow for the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation. For its first two seasons, Patrick Stewart and the showrunners shied away from Starfleet uniforms and shiny utopias, and Jeff Russo's score reflected that (as we've discussed with him on this very show). But showrunner Terry Matalas had a different vision in mind for Season 3: Celebrate the crew whose adventures captured generations of fans, with a big, brassy sendoff meant to give them the finale they finally deserved.   And that they did, thanks to the tireless work of composers Stephen Barton and Frederik Wiedmann. Together, they handled hours of big orchestral sounds, crafting new themes for ships and characters like the Titan and Jack Crusher. At the same time, there was decades' worth of callbacks to Star Trek's musical legacy that needed acknowledgment, from Jerry Goldsmith's TNG theme to the movie-esque sweep of James Horner and Dennis McCarthy. Through plenty of blood, sweat, and tears, they pulled it off, crafting an immense body of work that fit snugly within the legacy of Star Trek while incorporating musical Easter eggs big and small into its superstructure.   This week on the podcast, Barton and Wiedmann join me for a nice long chat about the hectic production process, the many Trekkian cues they had to blend together, and the value of having creative collaborators (like Matalas) who know exactly what they want.   You can find Stephen Barton and Frederik Wiedmann at their official websites.   The entirety of Picard Season 3 is available for streaming on Paramount+. You can also listen to the score on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Lakeshore Records.

Christian Wiedmann, President & CEO of BMW Group Japan had already arrived in Japan on one first stint back in the early 2000s. He was born in Thailand and grew up in the country for all of his youth. Due to this background, he seized the opportunity to run as the Chief Financial Officer in the BMW leasing business in various Asian countries such as Thailand, Korea, Australia and Japan. Mr. Wiedmann worked in many BMW departments around the world, and through his experience and knowledge, he was appointed President & CEO of BMW Japan Group in August 2019.   During his first few years of leadership, Mr. Wiedmann found it challenging to receive input from his team to effectively run the operations. Mr. Wiedmann explains how it is crucial that the team knows their businesses, have an opinion of where they want to go, and understand their strengths and weaknesses. Mr. Wiedmann adds, "I experienced that it is much more difficult to enter the Japanese local business leader community. It is quite open to enter the expat community or the local expat community but getting into the Japanese leader community, that's certainly hard…[although] not impossible.” He realized then and now that the trick to joining the community was to “walk the talk much, much longer than anywhere else.” Mr. Wiedmann also notes there is a formal side to functions in Japan, as well as a human side that is based on relationships. Thus, Mr. Wiedmann thinks it is important to establish trust, and “make the Japanese team certainly feel more and more safe and comfortable to express their opinions”.   As the President & CEO of BMW Group in Japan, Mr. Wiedmann worked by trying to make the team members follow his idea and achieve great results. By doing so, he agreed that engaging people is the key to making sure everyone is working towards a shared goal. Mr. Wiedman describes the “special” way his team holds discussions. He explains: “so we have a discussion…then there's a pause. So someone says something and they think we should do it like this and this." By making decisions in this way through feedback and discussions, there is more engagement.   Furthermore, Mr. Wiedman talks about the challenge of leading in a culture that is risk averse and wants to have every detail mapped out before making the first step. In order to overcome this challenge, Mr. Wiedmann says, Japan's business style needs to be more honest. He particularly highlights that by saying: “the moment somebody gets a complaint from headquarters around having been too vocal in a meeting, that is when they get a big congratulatory message from me,” indicating that Mr. Wiedmann himself would welcome receiving such feedback about Japanese team members.   At last, Mr. Widemann mentions 3 steps of advice that businesspeople who are new to Japan may adopt to succeed in Japan. Firstly, Mr. Wiedmann advises to take the time before coming here to prepare oneself for a smooth transition. Secondly, Mr. Wiedmann recommends practicing active listening, acting in an authentic manner, and reflecting one's behavior based on what one has learned through listening. Thirdly, Mr. Wiedman advises to be patient, stating: “give it time, give the organization time, and give the meetings time.” Through these steps, Mr. Wiedmann explains newcomers will successfully build respectful relationship with Japanese businesspeople.

Some countries have managed to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions while still growing their economies. Have you ever observed someone else scroll their newsfeed on their mobile device? How much time do you think they are spending on each piece of content? Now think about how long your next piece of content is. A Marketer, Writer, Podcast Host, and the Content Specialist at Weichert Workforce Mobility, Morgan Wiedmann, smashes the myth that the longer the content, the better. She gives marketers tips for planning a content calendar, how to grab the attention of your intended audience, and motivational words of wisdom to persist in your career journey. Check it out!   Takeaways: If you have a long piece of content, consider breaking it up into smaller chunks. Create a series that hooks your audience to stay tuned for more. The average person's attention span is about eight seconds. If your content does not grab your intended audience's attention in that eight seconds of review, they will move onto the next thing. If you have a long video, consider breaking it up into a mini series, and releasing teasers to generate buzz around it. When creating an email, put yourself in the place of the recipient. If this was an email in your inbox, would it grab your attention? Before crafting a piece of content, ask yourself, what are your customers going to get out of it? How is it going to help them? Using pictures on social media is a great way to grab the attention of your target audience, but it needs to stand out from the rest of the pictures in their newsfeed. Content in podcast form can be longer because people can listen to it on the go, as they get ready in the morning, when they're traveling, and when they want to multitask. Chatbots are great, but for the right purpose. Think about what the customer is trying to accomplish. When might they want to talk to a human? If you love something, don't give up on it. Keep persisting, doing your passion, and something will fall into place.   Links: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/morganwiedmann/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/mwiedd Weichert Workforce Mobility: https://www.weichertworkforcemobility.com/ Weichert Workforce Mobility Blog: https://www.weichertworkforcemobility.com/blog/   Busted Myths: The longer the content the better. - This is NOT the case. We live in an instantaneous society, people are not spending the time to read long content. If content does not grab someone's attention, they are already onto the next piece that will.   Shout Out: 48:48 - Morgan's Mom

Kelsa is a mom, designer and teacher that has spent years working in the mental health field. In 2013 she launched her first business, Happy Patches. Wonder Crate is an educational box for kids that promotes social emotional learning. Kids gain real world skills to be more confident, manage emotions, embrace challenges, increase social skills and stay positive. Skills are developed with the help of a book, fun activities, an online lesson and tips and resources for parents. www.wondercratekids.com Wonder Crate Mission: To teach all children the social and emotional skills that will empower them to explore their world, challenge their current abilities, look for ways to make the world a better place, and expect their own efforts WILL change the future! So many amazing tips and tools about how to help our kids develop resilience. Often, we are tempted to shelter our kids from pain and struggle, but actually, those challenges they face each day are there to help them develop their ability to face obstacles as opportunities to grow! I love the Kelsa described resilience as a muscle that we develop through practice and expose to challenges. We are not talking about dangerous challenges, just daily tasks that create frustration, like learning to tie their shoes, do their homework, or finish a chore. When we jump in to do it, it's like telling them we will do their workout for them! Can you imagine going to the gym with your kids and telling them, step away from that barbell, I will lift that for you?! We develop resilience just like we would our muscles with practice, with working on our mindset to see challenges as opportunities rather than setbacks. Resilience is "the power or ability to return to the original form, position, etc., afterbeing bent, compressed, or stretched" (dictionary.com). The ability to recover from a challenge is something that needs to be practiced, like a skill that needs to be learned, or a muscle that needs to be developed. Parents also model for kids how to cope with challenges. Being resilient is about recovery, and it is also about coping: recognizing when we are having strong feelings, and then modeling appropriate ways to deal with them. Perhaps you cope by going for a walk, or talking out your feelings with your own parents, friend, or spouse. These soft skills are part of learning how to parent, too. Something I have learned is that I have to be able to model resilience so that I can teach my kids how to develop that skill, too! That is the challenge! We can also talk about the challenges we face, how we feel about our mistakes, and how we are facing the issue. When you talk about "highs and lows" at the dinner table, for example, you can talk about how the lows are challenges that are a part of life, and discuss how to cope with them. About Wonder Crate Kids Wonder Crate is all about empowering children!  This goal directs every decision we make, from what topics they cover, to who they partner with, to the individual items we include in each box.  They want to teach ALL children the social and emotional skills that will empower them to explore their world, challenge their current abilities, look for ways to make the world a better place, and expect their own efforts WILL change the future! Wonder Crate Kids mission is to help you raise kids that are: Eager to take on challenges Confident in social situations Believe in themselves Aware of the feelings of others Able to regulate their emotions Open to new ideas and experiences Passionate about using their skills to make the world a better place Wonder Crate Kids is a subscription box that comes with a book, an activity, and suggestions for parents to help reinforce social and emotional skills.
