AN 8.08 In a discourse evidently set some time after the Buddha's passing, Venerable Uttara, staying in a distant land, teaches that a mendicant should review their own failings and those of others. Questioned by Sakka, the Lord of Gods, Uttara affirms that he learned this from the Buddha. AN 8.09 The Buddha praises the grace and restraint of Venerable Nanda. AN 8.10 When a certain monk was admonished, he responded by attacking his reprovers. Mary Carol realized that what she was going to do that day was be sick. That was how it was going to be, and actually, all she needed to do was to be with her illness. Her activity for the day was to be sick. And as her fever rose and the pain intensified, she practiced some deep meditative breathing. She worked on simply being with the discomfort, with an awareness that at some point, it would stop. In this episode of the Death Dhamma podcast, we follow Mary Carol as she grapples with being ill and her assumptions around what impermanence means versus what impermanence REALLY means. Mary Carol might not be too different than the rest of us.

Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. This is a part of a collection of gradual talks that will explore the Buddha's Teachings on Fear - the qualities we are encouraged to develop to overcome fear, how fear is constructed, the arising of fear, the dangers, challenges and the escape. We begin with shorter teachings from the Buddha and noble arahants, and eventually examine the longer teachings that will help to correct any wrong views and deepen our practice. It is an encouragement towards standing firmly on the Dhamma to acknowledge, understand, deal with and overcome fear. The world presents us with external challenges and uncertainties, and we have the means to bear with these external difficulties as well as to work through internal fears with the Buddha's teachings. In this session we look at "WHAT TO RECOLLECT TO ABANDON FEAR" from the Dhajagga Sutta (SN 11.3). The Buddha speaks to the monks about the battle between the devas and asuras and what Sakka advises the devas before battle when fear, trepidation and terror arises. The Buddha encourages the monks towards a different kind of recollection in order to abandon fear, trepidation and terror and gives reasons for his teaching. This is a timely teaching and good reminder for all of us who are walking the Buddha's Noble Path. Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. In today's session, we look at Dhammapada Verse 354 and the STORY OF SAKKA'S QUESTIONS TO THE BUDDHA. The devas of the Tavatimsa realm had questions that they had difficulty coming to the correct answers, so they went with Sakka, King of the Devas to see the Buddha in order to resolve these questions. This story is a strong reminder that we must lean towards the Noble Dhamma, as it is the best of gifts, tastes and delights. And Sakka reminds us that sharing the merit when Dhamma is offered (or for any good deed) is welcome and much needed for all sentient beings. The Buddha's words: “Sabbadānaṁ dhammadānaṁ jināti, Sabbarasaṁ dhammaraso jināti; Sabbaratiṁ dhammarati jināti, Taṇhakkhayo sabbadukkhaṁ jināti.” “The gift of Dhamma excels all gifts. Welcome back to the Sutta Meditation Series Podcast. Following on from the last session looking at "Why associating with good people (sappurisa) is so important on the Noble Eightfold Path", we take this one step further to examine "Developing the Buddha's qualities of a good person". We are particularly interested in looking at how we may self-sabotage our progress on the Path, and to investigate qualities that we consciously or unconsciously continue to practice that may be unwholesome, rather than wholesome. This is a strong encouragement to deepen the practice and really put effort to progress on the Noble Eightfold Path. This is part of our examination of the Avijjā Sutta (AN 10.61). Instead of ignorance, we want to cultivate and develop to fulfillment True Knowledge and Liberation (vijjāvimutti). The intention is to look at a few different parts of this insight pathway (which has all the main teachings of the Buddha to develop the Noble Eightfold Path and realise Nibbana) before pulling it all together to explain how to meditate on the full insight pathway. In this session we: - briefly refresh our minds about the Story of Sakka, King of the Devas and the Buddha's words - examine the qualities of gratitude and thankfulness, whom to praise and not praise, matters of belief or suspicion, behaving rightly towards our parents, the Tathagata and his noble disciples, simile of the newly arrived bride and the four qualities when it comes to virtues & faults, and the things we should refrain from using to glorify ourselves and belittle others - look at how to reflect and contemplate to develop these wholesome qualities and abandon the unwholesome ones. Most of the suttas that are directly or indirectly referred to in this session: — Sakka Vatthu (Dhp 206-208) — Samacittavagga (AN 2.32) — Āyācanavagga (AN 2.134-137) — Sappurisa Sutta (AN 4.73) — Sappurisa Sutta (MN 113) — Vatthūpama Sutta (MN 7) — Karaniyametta Sutta (Sn1.8) — Dasuttara Sutta (DN 34) To read the Avijjā Sutta (AN 10.61) - https://suttacentral.net/an10.61/en/bodhi A VIDEO of this segment has been published to the Sutta Meditation Series YouTube Channel - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DILGEN1PsAY AND on Spotify as a video podcast Blessings of the Triple Gem. Nous présenterons ensuite comment ces enclaves physiquement délimitées ont façonné la vie de leurs habitants, leurs conditions d’habitat, leur niveau de vie, l'organisation sociale et la dynamique politique.
