Matthew Wood has been a practicing herbalist since 1982. He studied botany at the University of Minnesota, receiving his Master of Science degree from the Scottish School of Herbal Medicine. An international lecturer, he has authored ten books on herbal medicine, including The Book of Herbal Medicine (North Atlantic Books, 2017) and The Earthwise Herbal Repertory (North Atlantic Books, 2016). In this episode Matthew shares with us early insights regarding the natural world and his realization that "nature is alive". An expert herbalist, he walks us through how he works with clients from intake through diagnostic approach and herbal remedy. Matthew shares how as his practice has matured over the decades he has learned to simply “follow the energy”. We discuss the homeopathic principle of treating like with like and what the extracellular matrix is and its role in whole organism communication. He describes the role of constitution in holistic health and gives examples from Ayurveda's dosha system, Native American animal likenesses, and the modern “body types” idea of endomorph, ectomorph and mesomorph. We examine the healing mechanism of adaptogenic mushrooms like Reishi and Chaga and how they fit into a herbalist framework. He also recommends certain sustainable tonic herbs that can have long term benefits and explains the concept of “the green power” of Viriditas, espoused by the middle-age mystic Saint Hildegard. Matthew discusses the growing challenges in people's wellness in a complex era of experimentation, sharing his vision of our relationship with the planet and Mother Nature in which our hearts are aligned with the love of the Earth. Matthew has helped tens of thousands of clients over the years, many with difficult health problems, and has maintained a practice of traditional Western herbalism during a period when many others have turned to the exotic traditions of India or China. While Matthew believes in the virtue of other healing modalities, he has always been inspired to learn, preserve, and practice the tradition of herbal medicine descending to us from our European, Anglo-American, and Native American heritage. He is a registered member of the American Herbalists Guild and teaches online through the Matthew Wood Institute of Herbalism.www.matthewwoodinstituteofherbalism.comLiked what you heard? Following in the footsteps of Germany's Bard, Goethe, Maureen will share his 7 step method which is a protocol for studying natural phenomena. We will learn how to breathe into what Goethe referred to as the "Life-filled Giving”. This will be applied to the study of dynamic images of plants and the living principle of how a plant/living being manifests its unique Essence. This approach brings a true recognition that plants have an inherent Cosmic connection to their Eternal Essence in the Cosmos. With examples of plant studies to illustrate how this can connect to the Eternal Nature of our own spiritual being. Prepare to have your mind blown as we answer the call to connect to our own inner world on what Goethe called "The Human Journey of Universal Oneness"!In this episode Maureen uses visual aids. Reveals how the extracellular matrix offers scientific proof for holism • Examines the function of the extracellular matrix, the inner ocean that unifies all our cells and controls them in a coordinated and integrated fashion• Explores how the extracellular matrix builds and repairs itself and how holistic therapy can be applied based on this knowledge• Introduces new and old holistic and herbal protocols for treatment of the matrixThe cells in our bodies are not independent units. They do not control their own feeding, elimination, migration, or reproduction; they are controlled by signals from the extracellular matrix (ECM) that surrounds them. This all-encompassing inner ocean unifies all our cells and controls them in a coordinated and integrated fashion.Revealing the stunning implications of the extracellular matrix, Matthew Wood shows how it clearly explains the actions and efficacy of holistic therapies. He explores the groundbreaking research of Alfred Pischinger, who discovered the ECM in 1975, as well as the role of the matrix in transmitting and enacting the genetic code, including the roles of the mitochondria, the nucleus, and ribosomes.Wood explains how modern drugs, directed at specific receptors on the cell membrane, interfere with bodily self-regulation. He details how holistic therapies modify the environment of the cell and strengthen the whole, bringing the body back to homeostasis and consequently offering true healing.Matthew Wood has been a practicing herbalist for more than 40 years. Maureen Robertson (Medical Herbalist) and Jose Melo (Musician & Composer) explore medicine. They have been working together for over 5 years to forge a conscious crossover between the healing vibrations of plants and the healing vibrations of music- a powerful example of working with nature in way of deep listening, attunement and cooperation. In this teleseminar, they will give an overview of health or disease being a dissonance of vibration musical harmony within the body, mind, spirit whole, and how the sound vibration of the different chords in any octave can have a strong effect on the different energy centers of the body. Jose uses guitar chords to illustrate the concepts of the top, middle and base notes within essential oils. If you have your own essential oils, have them ready to smell whilst the relevant chords are being played to emphasize the qualities!Aromatherapists already know how essential oils with their range of different notes can literally resonate with the energy centers to enable them to create a blend that harmonizes the energy. By experimenting with different chords stemming from the notes of aromatic oils choices, it is possible to begin a co-creative composition of healing vibration translated into music. This experimental technique gives a unique insight into which areas of the body need attention and then the relevant vibration of essential oils and their herbs which can help address that as well as the associated musical note(s).The self-evident opening up to vibrational energy in this way can literally bring an immediate healing resonance as well as informing blends of essential oils to support energy imbalances.Maureen has over 25 years of experience working with herbs and sharing Green knowledge. She co-founded the Scottish School of Herbal Medicine in 1992 offering courses from introductory to professional training at BSc and MSc degree level. At the same time, she encountered Goethe's way of studying "the Holy Open Book of Nature" as shared by Rudolf Steiner and discovered an approach of wholeness to studying plants, landscapes, and natural phenomena. She developed a clinical application of Goethe's method which shaped her herbal practice and the way she supports the healing process for the people she works with.In 2012 she established the Herbal Apprenticeship at Drimlabarra Herb Farm, Isle of Arran, Scotland which she ran for 4 years before relocating to Portugal where she continues her Apprenticeship training as well as hosting Inspiring International Herbal Speakers. Her travels in Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador meeting shamans and teacher plants helped create a deepening into the interior world of self-healing and shamanic practices which aid these processes are now an integral part of her approach to purification and rejuvenation. https://www.theherbalpath.net/about-usJose has been involved in music since his first successful punk rock band as a teenager in Sintra, which had a strong following for many years and made a number of recordings. We are in the company of Matthew Wood, author and herbalist of thirty years speaking to us on age-old plant medicine usages, the crucial task of upholding the habitat of plant communities, and much more. Matthew Wood has been a practicing herbalist since 1982. In a period when many authors and lecturers are merely "arm chair herbalists" who offer theories and opinions based on book learning, and others have turned to the exotic traditions of India or China, he has been an active practitioner of traditional Western herbalism. He has helped tens of thousands of clients over the years, with many difficult health problems. While Matthew believes in the virtue of many other healing modalities, he has always been inspired to learn, preserve, and practice the tradition of herbal medicine descending to us from our European, Anglo-American, and Native American heritage. He is a member of the American Herbalists Guild (registered herbalist) and has earned his Masters of Science degree from the Scottish School of Herbal Medicine.
Thomas Reid, the philosopher and founder of the Scottish School of Common Sense, did not publish much on politics, but his manuscripts reveal that he was deeply concerned with social, political and economic issues throughout his career. In this talk, Knud Haakonssen presents an analysis of Reid's hitherto unpublished Glasgow lecture notes, and shows that Reid was an acute commentator on contemporary politics and that his theoretical ideas framed solutions to some of the practical political and economic problems of his day.
