Fandom Podcast Network co-founders Kyle and Kevin welcome back special guests, author and friend of the FPN John Mosby, and one of the original FPN co-founders... Norman! Norman came to us with an excellent idea and twist to Couch Potato Theater. Couch Potato Theater is where we celebrate our favorite movies.... usually. But on this special edition of Couch Potato Theater we look back at films that maybe we, or the public opinion originally didn't like! But now, we may have a different opinion, welcome to Couch Potato Theater: Be Kind & Rewind - John Carter (2012). We also welcome special guest, author and journalist John Mosby. John attended a London 2012 John Carter press conference, and shares his experience on that event and the article he wrote on the movie. That Impact Online article can be found here: https://www.impactonline.co/features/669-john-carter-battling-martians-and-marketing Plot: John Carter, a Civil War veteran, who in 1868 was trying to live a normal life, is "asked" by the Army to join, but he refuses, so he is locked up. He escapes and is pursued. Eventually they run into some Indians, and there's a gunfight. Carter seeks refuge in a cave. While there, he encounters someone who is holding some kind of medallion. When Carter touches it, he finds himself in a place where he can leap incredible heights, among other things. He later encounters beings he has never seen before. He meets a woman who helps him to discover that he is on Mars, and he learns that some kind of unrest is going on. John Carter is a 2012 American science fiction action-adventure film directed by Andrew Stanton, written by Stanton, Mark Andrews, and Michael Chabon, and based on A Princess of Mars, the first book in the Barsoom series of novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Produced by Jim Morris, Colin Wilson and Lindsey Collins, it stars Taylor Kitsch in the title role, with Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciarán Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy and Willem Dafoe co-starring in supporting roles. This episode we review Pixar's latest Turning Red. Turning Red is a 2022 American computer-animated fantasy comedy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film was directed by Domee Shi (in her feature directorial debut), written by Shi and Julia Cho, and produced by Lindsey Collins. It stars the voices of Rosalie Chiang, Sandra Oh, Ava Morse, Hyein Park, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Orion Lee, Wai Ching Ho, Tristan Allerick Chen, and James Hong.
Award-winning playwright and co-writer of Pixar's TURNING RED, Julia Cho was born and raised in the arid suburbs of Southern California and Arizona. After a fairly uneventful childhood, she unexpectedly discovered theater as a teen and subsequently foiled her parents' expectations of a life of respectability and normalcy.Disney and Pixar's “Turning Red” introduces Mei Lee (voice of Rosalie Chiang), a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother's dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (voice of Sandra Oh), is never far from her daughter—an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships and body weren't enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), she “poofs” into a giant red panda! Directed by Academy Award® winner Domee Shi (Pixar short “Bao”) and produced by Lindsey Collins.Instead, armed with an MFA in writing from NYU and a prestigious fellowship at The Juilliard School, Julia launched herself into the New York theater scene. She soon landed residencies at the Sundance Lab and New Dramatists and productions at high-profile theaters in NYC and across the country. Memorable productions include “The Language Archive” (winner of the Susan Smith Blackburn Award), “Aubergine” and “Office Hour.” For her body of work, she received the 2020 Windham-Campbell Literary Prize for Drama which wrote: “Alternately lyrical and sharp, rigorous and whimsical, Cho's plays demand that we listen.”Alongside her theatrics, Cho has also cultivated a career as a writer and producer of a broad range of television shows from cult sci-fi (“Fringe”) to character-driven drama (“Big Love,” “Halt and Catch Fire”). She also adapted the critically-acclaimed novel The Madonnas of Echo Park for HBO and Starz, which showcased her ability to transform eloquent fiction into dynamic and propulsive narrative.Driven by keen curiosity and a passion for language, Julia strives to create work that expands our worlds and sparks our deepest empathies. She's currently under commission for South Coast Repertory to write a new play and is a Co-Executive Producer for the Amazon series, “Paper Girls.” In other words, she's following a movie about four thirteen-year-old girls with a series about four twelve-year-old girls. A project about four eleven-year-old girls is forthcoming.
The real world parent-child relationship of Disney and Pixar is reflected in the new Pixar film that should have played in theatres, Turning Red. Come for the Canadian representation and fuzzy pandas, stay for conversations you might not expect to find in a Pixar movie. To avoid SPOILERS for "Turning Red" skip over 33:13- 58:46 of the episode. Music and audio from "Turing Red" is the property of Ludwig Goransson, Lindsey Collins, Walt Disney Pictures, and Pixar Animation Studios. Our latest guests on Soundtracking are Pixar animator, writer and director, Domee Shi, and producer Lindsey Collins, who's new project together is the wonderful Turning Red. Streaming now on Disney + Turning Red tells the story of a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian student who transforms into a giant red panda when she gets into a heightened emotional state. It's scored by our old friend Ludwig Goransson, and you will, of course, hear plenty of his music throughout the conversation.

More about Domee Shi Domee began as a story intern at Pixar Animation Studios in June 2011, and was soon hired as a story artist on the Academy Award®–winning feature film “Inside Out.” Since then she has worked on the feature films “The Good Dinosaur,” “Incredibles 2” and the Academy Award–winning “Toy Story 4.” In 2015 she began pitching ideas for short films, and soon was green-lit to write and direct “Bao,” which won an Academy Award for best animated short film. In her role as a creative VP, Shi is involved in key creative decision-making at the studio and consults on films in both development and production. Shi was born in Chongqing, China, and resided in Toronto, Canada, for most of her life. She currently lives in Oakland, Calif., and notes that her love of animation is only rivaled by her love of cats. More about Lindsey Collins Lindsey joined Pixar Animation Studios in May 1997. In Disney and Pixar's latest feature film “Turning Red,” 13-year-old Mei-Lin Lee “poofs” into a giant panda when she gets too excited (which for a teenager is practically ALWAYS). »

This week on BEHIND THE LENS, we welcome back writer/director/producer SHERI SUSSMAN who delivers some exciting news about her deliciously dark comedy short, ONE NIGHT IN HOLLYWOOD. Joining her this time is one of the stars of ONE NIGHT IN HOLLYWOOD, IAN BUCHANAN. You know and loved him in "General Hospital" as Duke Lavery, but in ONE NIGHT IN HOLLYWOOD, you get to see a more "decadent" side of Ian's acting ability. Take a listen as Ian steals the show with his Scottish charm and humor talking about ONE NIGHT IN HOLLYWOOD, and giving us some "General Hospital" tidbits and food for thought. But before we get to Sheri and Ian, writer/director Benson Lee is talking about his new film, the frothy and fun, SEOUL SEARCHING. Think "Breakfast Club", "Sixteen Candles" and a little bit of "Ferris Bueller" but with a "seoul searching" Korean spin. Filmmakers will appreciate hearing what Benson has to say about music licensing and developing the film soundtrack. Plus, hear more of film critic debbie elias' exclusive interview with FINDING DORY producer Lindsey Collins, along with a few choice words from Ellen DeGeneres, Ed O'Neill and director Andrew Stanton. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
If you missed BEHIND THE LENS live this week, you definitely want to take a listen now to the legendary Carole Cook, writer/director Jody McVeigh-Schultz, and some excerpts of film critic debbie elias' exclusive interview with FINDING DORY producer Lindsey Collins! Returning again this year to talk about S.T.A.G.E. LA, an event near and dear to her heart, is star of stage and screen, the one and only Carole Cook. As usual, Carole is beyond a hoot and a holler! Now in its 32nd year, STAGE LA is the longest-running annual HIV/AIDS fundraiser in the world. Started in 1984, to date, STAGE has raised more than $7 million for HIV/AIDS organizations in the Southland with monies going to individuals for personal services and care. David Galligan has staged and directed all 32 productions. This year's theme is SONDHEIM No. 5 saluting the music of Stephen Sondheim and boasts a cast of new and old legends. (For tickets go to www.stagela.com. Two shows Saturday, June 18th at 2pm and 8pm at The Wallis in Beverly Hills.) Listen as Carole talks about the show, the cause, and a number she'll be performing which couldn't be more perfect for her - "I’m Still Here" - from Sondheim’s 1971 "Follies". And classic film fans will get a kick out of Carole's reminiscences of Gene Kelly, Lucille Ball and TCM's own Robert Osborne. And hear editor turned first-time writer/director Jody McVeigh-Schultz talk about the making of ECHO LAKE, marking his feature film directorial debut. Showing us the "humanity of imperfection", ECHO LAKE is quiet poignant beauty with a beautiful cinematic finish and after a successful festival run that started last year, finds its way to multiple VOD platforms this week. Jody has some great insight into cinematography and notably, sound design as viewed through the eyes and ears of an editor. Filmmakers will find what Jody has to say of particular interest. Interspersed throughout the show, you'll hear excerpts of debbie's exclusive interview with FINDING DORY producer Lindsey Collins as they talk about the journey to find Dory's story and new RIS technology used to make FINDING DORY a resplendent visual delight. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
