See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We wrap up what is left of the 2024 Academy Awards Best Picture Nominees that we hadn't gotten to yet with a nice little romantic drama about love, destiny and the nature of relationships. Nora left her childhood love, Hae Sung, in Korea when her family emigrated to Canada. They reconnect in their twenties online for a friendship with overwhelming emotion. Years later Nora has married a man she met on a writing retreat while Hae Sung served in the military and traveled to China. Now Hae Sung comes to New York to finally meet, in person, the woman he has been emotionally tethered to for the first time since their childhood. We're talking about Celine Song's “PAST LIVES” starring Greta Lee, Teo Yoo & John Magaro. It probably won't get all the awards. It's only nominated for two Oscars and one of them is fuckin' best picture. Damn I woulda probably nominated Greta Lee & Teo Yoo. They did some good stuff here. Ah well. Ain't our ceremony. We're predicting that they will pick Oppenheimer. The funniest Best Picture winner would be Maestro, hands down. Anyway, you can watch “PAST LIVES” on Paramount Plus as of this drop so trade your Netflix password for your cousin's Paramount password and check this one out. Fucking feel it. In this special conversation recorded live at Asia Society in New York City, Jeff welcomes newly minted Academy Award nominee Celine Song, writer/director of Past Lives. (Spoiler warning!) They discuss the real-life autobiographical moment that inspired her film's bilingual, bi-cultural center; telling a story about the people who hold and know the different parts of ourselves; and how things might have ended up differently for Nora and Hae Sung if they just had better tech and a stronger internet connection.

It's Oscar season! I was so thrilled to see ‘Past Lives', the astounding slow-moving-yet-somehow-fast-paced debut film from Celine Song nominated for Best Picture. Best Picture! On her very first film. Oh, and no biggie, Best Screenplay, too. This following a slew of other noms like 5 Golden Globes, 3 Critics Choice Awards, 3 BAFTAs, and a recent Director's Guild of America win for Outstanding Directorial Achievement for a First-Time Feature Film. Leslie and I loved ‘Past Lives' so much we went back to theaters to see it again. The film had such unique energy as it told the story of Nora and Hae Sung, two childhood friends in South Korea, who lose touch when Nora's family emigrates, and then seem to be forever-chasing the goodbye they never had. The film opens with a late-night bar scene of Hae Sung visiting Nora and her husband in New York before scrolling back to tell the unpredictable, jumping-around-the-decades story of how they got there. Every shot was such a sumptuous visual feast — from silhouetted lineups for the Staten Island Ferry to broken-transmission Skype calls to a final waiting-for-an-Uber scene that deserves its own prize. And the writing! Crisp. Punctuating. So much said ... with so little. ‘Past Lives' is a truly magical film that I can't recommend enough. 96% on Rotten Tomatoes also means there's a great chance your movie-going pal will love it, too. I was thrilled ‘Past Lives' director, writer, and filmmaker wunderkind Celine Song joined me on 3 Books from her New York apartment to talk about the Korean concept of in-yun, why we're drawn to stories, what unique role millennials play as the last pre-Internet-immersive generation, how a cannibalistic orgy makes for great literature, a surprising cure for loneliness, why sensory deprivation increases chemistry, the other job of a director, Celine's 3 most formative books, and much, much more... Let's flip the page into Chapter 133 now...
In this bonus episode of The Cinematography Podcast, we interview Shabier Kirchner, the cinematographer of Past Lives. The film is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Past Lives, written and directed by Celine Song, is about childhood sweethearts reconnecting as adults after many years. When cinematographer Shabier Kirchner, who is from Antigua, was sent the script, it immediately resonated with him. “Past Lives was not just a standalone amazing script, but I found myself in the material. A lot of what I was going through, being an immigrant to the US, being from the Caribbean, reconnecting with a friend, falling in love, all of that stuff was happening while I was reading the material and it just felt like it was written for me.” Shabier and director Celine Song had an amazing first conversation, and he wasn't aware that she'd never made a film before. Fortunately, they had an extensive amount of time to prep the movie, and they chose to shoot on Kodak 35mm film. The film takes place in New York and Korea, and they knew they had to shoot it out of order, starting with all of the New York scenes which take place later in the story. Shabier and Song also spent time discussing how to use the language of the film to express what the characters were experiencing. Past Lives tells a story about how relationships change over time. Shabier chose to translate this into deliberate pacing with long tracking shots, keeping the lighting natural and simple. In the film, natural elements tell the passage of time as well, through rain, clouds and the changing light. Even the characters Nora and Hae Sung tell a story about time in their movements. “We were speaking about the final scene in the film, and I asked Celine a question of what direction should they walk? In a very Celine fashion, she (said) 'Well, they should walk right to left because that is into the past. And she should drop him off in the past and then walk from left to right back into the future and up the stairs.' That very small and simple moment in our conversation led and informed the entire language of the film in terms of how we move the camera from left to right.” Shabier broke out as a cinematographer a few years ago on director Steve McQueen's five-part anthology series, Small Axe, winning a BAFTA for lighting and photography. The series tells both real and fictional stories about London's West Indian community in the 1970's and 80's. McQueen chose to treat each episode as a series of small films, rather than a TV series. They would discuss and prep one, scout it, shoot it, break for a week, then begin prep for the next episode. Starting with Mangrove, the longest in the series, they shot in order as much as possible, with Lovers Rock next. Shabier says it was a nice release for the crew's pent-up emotions on Mangrove, which dealt with anti-police protests and then the trial of nine Black men accused of starting a riot. They knew they could put joy and energy into Lovers Rock, a much simpler story about a house party, love and music. Shabier thinks McQueen structured the shoots for Small Axe in a way that was very smart, creating a serious mood when they needed to be serious, and lightening the mood as needed. Past Lives is still in some theaters and available on VOD. https://a24films.com/films/past-lives The Small Axe series is on Amazon Prime. Hosts Mike and Kenny review and spot faith elements reflected in the Academy Award nominated film by Celine Song. Past Lives stars Greta Lee (Nora) and Teo Yoo (Hae Sung) who were childhood friends and first loves, separated suddenly when Nora's family immigrated from South Korea to Canada. The film co-stars John Magaro (Arthur) who meets and marries Nora after she moved to New York. Nora and Hae Sung reconnect via social media after 12 years. Following another 12 year gap Hae Sung travels to New York to see Nora and meets Arthur. Faith Reflected: The importance of pursuing one's passion and perhaps one's life calling. Then the importance of accepting the life you have and are blessed with rather than sacrificing the life you should have for the life you had and or did not have. Mark 1:35-39 Paul's teaching in 1st Corinthians 13 that one puts away the things of childhood when one becomes an adult. One can easily covet the past life or the life that might have been rather than accepting and embracing the life one has been blessed with. Understanding that the persons, relationships and experience in our loved one's past life has made them the person one now loves.

Nora and Hae Sung, two deeply connected childhood friends, are wrested apart after Nora's family emigrates from South Korea. Twenty years later, they are reunited for one fateful week as they confront notions of love and destiny. This film marks Celine Song's directorial debut and stars Greta Lee, Teo Yoo and John Magaro. Today, Larry sits down with the director of PAST LIVES Celine Song to talk about the film and her creative process.
Mark hopes to get 8000 layers of in-yun with this film as he tries to figure out what makes Past Lives so affecting, how it tells such a thematically weighted story through such a simple human one, and if this film could be any less interested in Canada.https://markoveranalysesfilm.buzzsprout.com/https://www.markoveranalysesstory.com/https://twitter.com/overanalysefilm
On the ninth episode of All the Film Things, we are continuing to focus on likely Oscar contenders! I am joined by my friend and cinematographer, Josie Cruz, to discuss and analyze Celine Song's instant classic debut feature film, Past Lives. This episode is spoiler- filled. Past Lives is a romantic drama that explores the deep connection between childhood friends, who are also each other's first loves', over the span of 24 years. The film, set mostly in NYC and Seoul, follows Nora (known as Na Young before she emigrated) and Hae Sung as they navigate their relationship from losing contact with one another to finding each other again as they go through life. When Hae Sung comes to visit a now- married Nora in NYC, they try and understand their relationship and significance to one another. Inspired by her real life experiences, the film was written and directed by Celine Song featuring excellent performances by Greta Lee, Teo Yoo, and John Magaro. This episode was recorded on November 26, 2023… one day before Past Lives won Best Picture at the Gotham Awards. Up until that win, fans of this film, including Josie and I, had been concerned Past Lives may not get the recognition it deserves during the upcoming awards season. Now that Past Lives earned the big award on November 27, the Past Lives fan community has hope it will receive proper recognition at the Oscars. As I mention in this episode, this is a rare, true film in present day cinema. This is Josie's ATFT debut! Josie is a cinematographer who recently graduated college. You can view her reel by clicking this link: https://jojigami.webflow.io . She has been one of the biggest supporters of this podcast and the Instagram associated with the podcast, for which I am very grateful. This episode came together fast. There were two cancellations and I was running out of time to plan what Episode 9 would be. I knew I wanted to do an episode on Past Lives and I also knew I've been wanting to have Josie on as a guest. So, I randomly asked one day if she happened to see Past Lives, thinking it was unlikely… but to my surprise, it happened to be one of her top films of the year! We soon recorded this episode and it has turned out to be one of the best episodes released so far on this wide release of ATFT. And this certainly won't be the last time you'll hear her on ATFT. In this episode, Josie and I analyze a range of moments and topics about the film. While dissecting the film, we learn that the suspense posed by the trailer of “Who will Nora choose?” isn't really what the film is about. We talked about how Nora's decision was always the same while also going deeper into the complexity of her dynamic with both Hae Sung and Arthur as well as the complexity of Past Lives as a whole. Josie talked about how meaningful this film is to her and connections she made in her own life while I talk about this film's similar, trademark qualities of New Hollywood- 70s films. We also talked about the depiction of present day technology in the film, the power of utilizing silence, and much more!
Nora and Hae Sung, two deeply connected childhood friends, are wrested apart after Nora's family emigrates from South Korea. Twenty years later, they are reunited for one fateful week as they confront notions of love and destiny.

此时的Nora已经与Arthur(由John Magaro饰演)组建了家庭。 "Past Life" is the first feature film by director Celine Song. The movie tells the story of Nora (played by Greta Lee) reuniting with her childhood sweetheart Hae Sung (played by Teo Yoo) after 20 years in New York. But by now, Nora has formed a family with Arthur (played by John Magaro) and is chasing her dream to be a successful playwright. It's the best original scripted film we've seen this year, and it provokes some soul-searching and reflections on our own past life stages. The heroine Nora is like a close friend of ours. Her leaving, staying, pursuit of dreams, and determination to control her own fate remind us of our own paths to our current life. 01:51 Our first impressions of the movie 9:24 Casting choice: a silent but strong masculine type 11:34 How camera movements and background music build and release tension 23:20 The "perfect ending" of this movie 29:55 At its core, this is a story about immigration 32:22 "Leaving" and its importance to women's self-realization 36:00 Healthy and not-so-healthy power dynamics within a white-Asian couple 46:15 Why Nora is a female character with real agency 【拓展链接 The Links】 A Woman Satisfied: Alyssa Songsiridej on the Refreshing Lack of Regret in Past Lives ‘Past Lives' Review: Longing for a Future 《前世》:颠覆爱情电影,超越身份政治 【疲惫红书 CyberRed】 除了播客以外,疲惫娇娃的几个女的在小红书上开了官方账号,我们会不定期发布【疲惫在读】、【疲惫在看】、【疲惫旅行】、【疲惫Vlog】等等更加轻盈、好玩、实验性质的内容。 CyberPink2022 If you like our show and want to support us, please consider the following: Those Abroad:https://www.patreon.com/cyberpinkfm Those in China:https://afdian.net/@cyberpinkfm Business Inquiries Email:cyberpinkfm@gmail.com Business Inquiries WeChat: CyberPink2022
