Join me for My Achill Island Distillery Chat with Seán & Michael McKay. I recently visited this picturesque island distillery in beautiful county Mayo, just off the west coast of Ireland, by bridge. Seán and Michael McKay are brothers. They are carrying on the legacy of their father who founded the distillery originally and they are genuinely doing their father's legacy a massive justice. They have an amazing operation at Achill Island Distillery. 2 x 5000ltr pot stills, fed by 7 fermenters, keep this a 7 day operating distillery. They have vast warehouses with 5yr old whiskey stock, that tastes amazing. This is a little gem of a distillery that will be a major part of the Irish whiskey landscape going forward. I was very impressed.......

“It was all going fine until he chopped off all his fingers.”In 2022, writer-director Martin McDonagh reunited with his In Bruges stars, Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, to create a haunting tale of friendship, loss, and the far-reaching consequences of our actions. Set against the backdrop of the Irish Civil War in 1923, The Banshees of Inisherin was filmed on the breathtaking Achill Island and Inishmore, capturing the essence of a remote Irish community. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off the final series in this season of looking at films nominated in various award categories over the last 100 years – a format we've thoroughly enjoyed exploring. We begin our 2023 DGA Awards Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film Nominees series with a conversation about The Banshees of Inisherin.A Microcosm of War and FriendshipIn our discussion, we explore how The Banshees of Inisherin serves as a microcosm for the larger conflict of the Irish Civil War. The sudden dissolution of Pádraic and Colm's friendship mirrors the division and brutality of the war, with both men stubbornly refusing to reconcile. We also delve into the film's examination of the dehumanization of violence and how even the most trivial of disagreements can escalate into devastating battles.Throughout the episode, we touch upon various aspects of the film that contribute to its brilliance, such as the powerhouse performances of Farrell, Gleeson, Kerry Condon, and Barry Keoghan; the stunning Irish landscapes that create a captivating atmosphere; and the role of animals as extensions of the characters' identities and emotional states. We also ponder the potential for this story to become a legendary tale passed down through generations, becoming an origin story for future pub conversations.Other topics covered in our conversation include:The exploration of blind spots in self-perception and the journey of self-discoveryThe cultural conflicts and stereotypes at play within the island communityThe tragic consequences of the characters' inability to move past their differencesThe film's seamless blending of humor and heartbreakThe Banshees of Inisherin is a masterful exploration of the complexities of human relationships and the far-reaching consequences of our actions. Martin McDonagh's deft direction, combined with the brilliant performances of the cast, makes for a film that is both thought-provoking and emotionally resonant. While the film's darker themes may not be for everyone, we found it to be a captivating and worthwhile cinematic experience. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. Today I'm looking at linear parks – effectively, old road or rail lines that are now green vectors for hikers and bikers. Some, like my location today, are in the middle of busy cities: I am in Seoul, South Korea, on a 1970s flyover that was threatened with demolition yet rescued and turned into a leafy, elevated walkway above the tumult of the city. New York has a similar option, the High Line, which has taken over a former elevated freight line in Manhattan. Two rail links now turned into cycle/walkways that I particularly like: Singapore's Rail Trail and the Great Western Greenway between Westport, Co Mayo and Achill Island in the west of Ireland. This podcast is free, as is my weekly newsletter. Phil Hartline replied to the Celtic Music Magazine: “I listen in my shop, where I make musical instruments and general wood projects.   I am celebrating Celtic Culture through music by learning to play the fiddle! I have a wonderful opportunity to learn true Co. Clare style from a man who spent a lot of time there. Beginner that I am, I will still be playing tunes on my fiddle to celebrate!" Paul replied: "Marc, I was sitting at my computer writing code ... as one does .. "For St Patrick's Day?" I will be participating in an Irish Road Bowling event with my co - workers at the Green Bank Observatory in Green Bank, West Virginia We started back in October, listening to music for Samhain, then continued into November and December with Celtic Christmas ... and really we listen to Celtic music year - round  -  but I will be celebrating Celtic culture by wearing the green on Friday while I'm busy at Ból an bhóthair, then hoisting a proper stout afterwards. Going to a fife and drum reunion in July (in Williamsburg, VA), where I will be playing a heck - ton of good Irish, Scots, and Welsh music (as well as a smattering of German and English marches, because, well, 18th C. Military music was all over the place) We always enjoy your shows!!!" PENNIERICH replied: "During the show we usually take a break and just relax and listen.” Jesse Ferguson emailed: "I'll be listening to the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast at work that day, then practicing my favourite Irish songs at home on my guitar. Finally, I'll be activating a new Irish song on my YouTube channel, to share with my subscribers, a tradition I've kept going for over 12 years." Michael Maccarone emailed: "Marc Gunn, I usually download episodes and stockpile them. I listen to them on (my rare) vacations, after I have broken them down into 20 - 25 minute chunks (my mp3 player won't rewind within a track, so I split each episode into 3 - 5 mini episodes, which makes it easier if I missed something and want to go back). As a result, I'm only up to episode #430 so far. I don't have any specific Celtic culture plans [for St Patrick's Day] for this week, other than I just watched the Oscar - winning short, An Irish Goodbye yesterday, and hope to get to the Banshees of Inisheerin in the next couple of weeks. Keep up the good work!"

They wrote, produced and directed the upcoming feature film ‘Lakelands' which stars Éanna Hardwicke (Normal People, Vivarium), Danielle Galligan (Shadow and Bone, Kin), Lorcan Cranitch (Bloodlands) and Gary Lydon (Banshees of Inisherin). The film won Best Irish Film and Bingham Ray New Talent Award for its lead actors at the Galway Film Fleadh, having won the Bankside Award at the Galway Film Fair the previous year. It won Best Film at Kerry Film Festival and played at international festivals such as Santa Barbara Film Festival and Glasgow Film Festival. It will be released theatrically in Ireland and UK by Wildcard Distribution on May 5th. It has been nominated for four IFTAs including Best Film. Their short film ‘Drifting' stars Oscar nominee Paul Mescal (Normal People) and Dublin Critic's Choice winner Dafhyd Flynn (Michael Inside). It premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh, was acquired for worldwide distribution by Network Ireland Television and played a number of Academy Award and Bafta winning festivals including Galway Film Fleadh, Dublin International Film Festival, Newport Beach Film Festival and Aesthetica Film Festival. Emily had worked in the film industry in various roles for many years, as well as organising events, such  as comedy nights, gigs, mini festivals and stages at Electric Picnic. Her decision to move to her family's ancestral homeplace of Achill, where she had often holidayed as a child, was prompted by the opportunity she had to think about what she wanted from life during the  pandemic, and by a sense that Dublin was becoming more of a rat race. A keen fan of film festivals, Emily saw a gap in the market as there was no existing film festival in Achill.  Indeed, the island does not even have a cinema. She also thought it would be a beautiful place for film  industry professionals from all over the world to visit, meet and network with each other.  After a hectic year of planning, the inaugural Achill Island Film Festival was held in May 2022. 370  people attended the event, which screened 115 films across five venues. The past two episodes were called Atlanta Pub Songs & Stories because I wanted and still want to highlight things around Atlanta, where I currently live. The problem is I wasn't sure what to do. Yes. I have a food recommendation coming up. But when I put myself in the shoes of potential listeners, like you, I just don't see the Atlanta part as being useful for reaching an audience. More than likely, you're interested in Sci Fi, fantasy, Celtic music and culture, or pop culture because that is what I do. Atlanta is not as essential to the music story even though most of my shows are located in this city. And so, I'm pleased to introduce Sci Fi Pub Songs & Stories. 5:15 - UPCOMING SHOWS FEB 9: Drinking Songs Concert on Bandcamp @ 7 PM ET FEB 11: Pontoon Brewing, Sandy Springs, GA @ 12-3 PM JUN 3-10: Celtic Invasion Vacations, County Mayo, Ireland 6:25 - CELTIC INVASION OF WESTPORT, IRELAND This June, I'm bringing a small group of people to Westport, Ireland. I'd like you to join me. Westport is part of the Wild Atlantic Way. That's a spectacular, scenic route from Irishowen in County Donegal all the way down the west coast of Ireland to Kinsale in County Cork. It's broken up into 14 stages, two of which are in the area we are staying, Achill Island and Clew Bay, and Westport to Clifden. 5 Things You Should Do in County Mayo, Ireland Go to Matt Malloy's Pub in Westport. Visit Westport House and take a train around town to get to know the history behind the Irish of County Mayo Hike up Croagh Patrick, This pilgrimage area has a story that St. Patrick himself scaled this mountain and fasted atop it for 40 days way back in 441 AD. It's definitely a revered site in this area of the country, and can make for a great stop on any trip to the region. Take a boat out to Clare Island to visit O'Malley Castle, one of the castles owned by the Pirate Queen, Grace O'Malley. Take pictures all along the Wild Atlantic Way. I completed the itinerary for the trip and already I think I scheduled way too much. There are so many fine castles, cliffs, and amazing things to see, not to mention the time I hope to spend in Matt Malloy's listening to music. It's gonna be an incredible trip. I still have space for just two more people. If you'd like to join me in Ireland, hear me perform live in your living room, you won't be sorry. It's gonna be spectacular. I taught Kenzie it. After just two games, I was kinda done. The game drags on just way too long. Unfortunately, Kenzie is not done with it. She loves it and makes us play as often as we will let her. So I finally figured out how to endure the game. It's a quick win or lose strategy. If you're lucky enough to buy all the property as soon as possible, then demolish and win. If you're not, do your best to lose and get out of the game as soon as possible. Kind of sad. But that's what a monopoly is. If you learned about early 20th century monopolies, it wasn't much better. In fact, the woman who created the game was trying to teach people the evils of monopolies. Yet, we haven't learned. The government allowed Live Nation to create a monopoly of concert venues. Ticket sales for Taylor Swift's summer tour busted their online system. Well, actually, it was already busted thanks to bootleggers. Monopolies are one of the reasons I finished “Blue Sun”. But the song actually goes back before that, all the way back to the writing of “Monahan's Mudder's Milk”. That's when I wrote the chorus. Blue Sun. Blue Sun Another corporation with their hand on the gun Blue Sun. Blue Sun. Free yourself to run from Blue Sun. Blue Sun is the corporation in the TV show Firefly with a seemingly nefarious background. You see their imagery on Jayne's shirt, on the docks of Persephone, and other places. The blue color makes me think of the Two by Two, Hands of Blue from the episode Ariel. I can't help but wonder if a connection is there. It feels to me like Blue Sun is a monopoly that largely is in control or at least has a big blue hand in their Alliance government. And because they have a monopoly, they can do what they want. They can also destroy what they want all in the name of profit for their investors. I did my best to come up with what a bully corporation would do. That's what the first two verses are all about. It's about subjugating the people they are supposed to “serve”. They terraformed the lands of many fine worlds Then bloodied our hands with our boys and our girls They offered us cans of food that curdled And piled on chains by the ton. You see their emblem emblazoned on crates On walls, on wombs, even on your dates You may fall victim to their seductive gaze So raise up your hands to shun Now we come to the final idea that motivated writing this song. My family is from a small town in East Texas. It was never a super vibrant town. As a kid, it looked like they stopped growing as a community in prolly the 40s or 50s. But they did have a downtown area. That downtown area disappeared when Walmart moved in. Walmart's strategy was to build a big store on the edge of town. It offered low, low prices, on everything. We were all thrilled. That's where I first experienced the store. I loved it. Before long, the downtown of our local community was closed down. You've prolly heard the term “Buy Local”. It took a while for me to understand that idea. The fact is that we need to support our local community if we want to see it thrive and grow. Much like “Monahan's”, this song turns into a Woody Guthrie style protest song against corporations. Their manacles we'll cast off our tired wrists. Their suits we'll pummel with our bloodied fists Cut through the red tape and expunge the vile cyst That cripples our will to run So raise up your voice and shout to the firm Let those who control know what it feels like to squirm Their products we won't buy, but oh they shall burn For this is their will undone I love the imagery in these verses. It is very down-to-earth. And fierce. Complete with burning their products in protest. I made two recordings of this song. The Kilted Kings version features Randy Wothke on percussion. The As Long As I'm Flyin' version has Lyrics and music Marc Gunn Marc Gunn: autoharp, vocals Daniel Briggs: bass, mandolin, octave mandolin, vocals LT Panzarella: dumbek So I wrote, this song, not just as  a stance against corporations but also as a stance FOR small businesses, local organizations and companies and individuals and bands 24:25 - Marc Gunn “Blue Sun” from As Long As I'm Flyin' 26:50 - THANK YOU GUNN RUNNERS! The one that looked most promising was in Sandy Springs. So we drove 30 minutes over there only to find the place was very smoky. Something I'm not big on. Happily, we were close to Pontoon Brewing Company. We stopped and had a drink while we picked a place to have dinner. We were all tired from the day. One of the closest places that sounded interesting was a Thai food restaurant. We drove over to Sweet Chili Thai Cuisine. I love Thai but never have I loved it as much as I loved it here. There were four of us. We had four appetizers, three meals and two desserts. Every, single, dish, was, AMAZING! The coconut soup was so creamy and delicious. They recommended Curry Puffs and WOW! The Basil Rolls were so fresh. The Nom Sod was delicious. Drunken Noodles, Spicy Green Beans, and Chef's Catfish special. Omg! They apparently just opened six months ago. So now is the time to go. Because this food was incredible. Oh! And the price was very reasonable for Thai food. Go check out Sweet Chili Thai Cuisine. 31:26 - Marc Gunn “Botany Bay” from Going for Brogue 34:36 - ARE YOU CARRYING YOUR OWN CELTLERY? You heard that right—Celtlery. I'm looking for more eco-friendly merch that I can create and sell at shows. I finally packaged up one such item-Travel Celtlery. How many times do you go to a lower-end restaurant where they give you a small plastic bag filled with plastic cutlery and a napkin that smells like pepper. You know what I'm talking about. I find this so frustrating because no matter how many times I order out and I tell them no silverware is needed, they bring it. What do we do with that stuff. You open it up. The plastic bag is not easily recycled. The plasticware usually goes straight into the trash. One of the things I'm trying to teach myself to do is to bring my own cup and cutlery so I don't have to use more plastic than I have to. That's why I'm trying out selling Travel Celtlery. This is a small bag to hold bambooware that you can take with you so you too don't have to add to the plastic problem that is destroying our planet. Right now, I have a small handful of Celtlery Bags in my store. What do you think of the idea? Want your own? Shop for Celtlery now! Oh! Shortly after writing this, I found a downloadable guide from Beyond Plastics about how to reduce plastic use at restaurants. If you love this episode, then take a screenshot on your phone. Teen's Covid "Vaccine" Death and Investigation Expose the Massive Flaw in the "Speed of Science"

Freedom Discourse

It took months to analyze Covid-19, develop vaccine candidates, test them, produce them, and start distributing them to the masses. Steps were skipped or curtailed, of course, as Big Pharma companies raced to cash in on billions of dollars worth of jabs.As Pfizer executive Janine Small said to the EU Parliament last month, they were "moving at the speed of science."But after the huge rush to put out products exemplified corporate fiscal "science" at its worst in 2020, the last two years have seen real science grind to a halt. Producing the jabs happened in record time but analyzing the adverse reactions, reporting on studies, revealing the true lack of efficacy, and investigating deaths are moving slower than molasses. This is by design. The perfect example of this is the sad story of Joseph McGinty, a 14-year-old boy who died three weeks after getting his jabs. It has been nearly 15-months since he died and they're just now getting around to launching an investigation into what killed him. What's worse is they're saying the investigation may take years before they have results. If the jabs are as dangerous as many of us believe (hint: they are), the verdict from this medical investigation will only come out after it's way too late for the masses.Below is an article by Suzanne Burdick, Ph.D., from The Defender, that I discussed on today's episode.Teen's Death 3 Weeks After Pfizer Vaccine Triggers InvestigationThe death last year of a 14-year-old Irish teen three weeks after he received Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine has sparked a “considerable investigation” that will include requests to Pfizer for safety information, officials involved in an inquest into the teen's death said this week. The death last year of a 14-year-old Irish teen three weeks after he received Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine has sparked an investigation that could take years, officials involved in an inquest into the teen's death said this week.As part of the “considerable investigation,” authorities said they will request safety information about the vaccine from Pfizer.Joseph McGinty, a secondary school student from Achill Island, Ireland, received the Pfizer vaccine on Aug. 20, 2021. On Sept. 1, 2021, he was hospitalized overnight at Mayo University Hospital and discharged the following day.On Sept. 8, 2021, McGinty revisited the hospital for review. He died at home on Sept. 13, 2021. Patricia McGinty formally identified her son's remains on the day of his death but “has very little recollection of the morning in question,” the family's attorney, Rita Kilroy, told the court. The coroner involved in the case, Pat O'Connor, called McGinty's death “a matter of significant public concern.”“The circumstances of Joseph McGinty's death is that COVID vaccination was administered to him [and] that there appears to have been either a reaction or a significant change in his medical circumstances following the administration of the vaccine and that subsequently, unfortunately, Master McGinty died,” O'Connor said in Monday's hearing.Kilroy told the court this week, “We would perceive there to be a concern for public health and safety and potential for recurrence in two circumstances.”An inquest is a formal investigation conducted by a coroner in order to determine how someone died. The purpose of an inquest is limited to establishing the identity of the deceased individual as well as where, when and how they died.At the request of Kilroy, O'Connor agreed to make a request for legal aid and legal advice for the McGinty family under Section 60 of the Coroners Act, 1962.The inquest into McGinty's death will resume on Dec. 20.Studies link COVID-19 vaccines, including Pfizer's, to negative health outcomes — especially among young men — including death. In June 2021, The Defender reported on the death of 13-year-old Jacob Clynick just three days after he received the second dose of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declined to investigate Clynick's death, even though the death was reported to the agency's Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS).Between Dec. 14, 2020, and Nov. 11, 2022, there have been nine deaths reported to VAERS following COVID-19 vaccines among children ages 6 months to 5 years, 31 deaths reported among children 5 to 12 years old and 133 deaths among teens 12 to 18 years old.Last month, Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo, M.D., Ph.D., recommended against mRNA COVID-19 vaccination of males ages 18 to 39 years given the results of a study that found an 84% increase in the risk of cardiac death among young adult males within 28 days of mRNA COVID-19 vaccination. Since March, Florida has recommended against mRNA COVID-19 vaccination of healthy children and adolescents younger than 18.On Sept. 30, Sweden announced it would no longer recommend COVID-19 vaccination for children ages 12 to 17 and in Denmark, COVID-19 vaccines are not recommended for anyone under 50 years old. This article was originally published by The Defender — Children's Health Defense's News & Views Website under Creative Commons license CC BY-NC-ND 4.0.
