There's not much social connection or community when all community happens electronically.” —Dr. Shannon Thomas “When life gets hard, boredom hits, or you are getting anxious, you just turn to your phone to numb it out instead of learning to cope with your feelings or the situation you got yourself in.” —Lacey Villasenor “We're almost building a community around how we label ourselves. There's been a high focus on transparency and authenticity as core values for young people, and then we turned this cliche into a core value of the church when it really started in culture.” —Shane Pruitt “Part of what we have to do is teach ourselves and each other is, ‘Okay, when I'm experiencing anxiety, what is really going on? What am I anxious about? Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Eve...holidays take on an entirely different meaning in a narcissistic family system. Trauma expert Shannon Thomas said it best "In healthy families, you're just yourself – your name, your talents, your strengths, and weaknesses. You're the person. But in a narcissistic family, things are different. Everybody has to find somewhere to be and a job to do within the family… they either support the narcissistic parent, or they are the focus of the narcissistic parent's rage." Tony discusses the dynamics of the narcissistic family giving particular attention to the scapegoat. Tony extensively references Alexander Burgemeester's article "Toxic Narcissistic Family Dynamics Explained" from his excellent website https://thenarcissisticlife.com/narcissistic-family-dynamics/, and he provides a beautiful description of the true power of the scapegoat from the website https://anchoredabode.com/2019/09/03/scapegoat-definition-narcissism/ And you can find out more about Tony's new parenting course in the Relationship Mastery Pack https://www.epicmarriageclub.com/a/2147499720/h3Cn8yaE Get thousands of dollars in relationship tools for one special Black Friday price featuring Tony's brand new parenting course: 3 Keys to Positive Parenting - Bring the Positivity without Messing Up Your Kids Even if You're Not Sure Where to Start! Shannon Thomas is cofounder of Surf Dayton, a river surfing outfitter on the park waves of the Great Miami River running through Dayton, Ohio. He’s been getting people on the river building a community of both athletes and stewards. During covid, people have been looking to stay sane by learning to go with the river flow, embracing good vibes, and bridging divides. Over the last couple of months since recording my last podcast I have escaped the headlines by heading into the backcountry. So, in late September I was thrilled to see a BBC article highlighting Surf Dayton. It encouraged me to get in touch with Shannon with whom I have not surfed with in a few years. Here is the link to that BBC article. The pandemic is fuelling a surfing boom - in Ohio corn country https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-54244009
Host Paul Lawrence Vann received a text message from Shannon Thomas inquiring if he knew how to obtain personnel records of her father who was a casualty of the Vietnam War, he was only 19 years of age at the time of his untimely death. Shannon had listened to a previous episode where Paul discussed his background working on Capitol Hill for a member of Congress assigned to the House Armed Services Committee and he had processed casework for thousands of constituents to include working closely with the Veterans Administration.Paul and Shannon share this unique experience in their efforts to assist other military families who may be experiencing roadblocks and not knowing how to obtain valuable military records important to surviving family members. Host Paul Lawrence Vann worked with Shannon to guide her through the maze many families and military dependents experience. That's not all, after retiring from the United States Air Force, Paul was a contractor and worked in the Family Readiness Office for the National Guard Bureau thus he has vast experience working with Army and Air National Guard families in all 50 states, Territoires and Possessions. One of the reasons Shannon wants her father's military records is because she is trying to get closure for herself and her family because she was only seven months young at the time of her father's untimely passing, he was 19 years old when he became a casualty of the Vietnam War.Host Paul Lawrence Vann coached Shannon through the process and she will be able to obtain her father's military record. Coach Paul works with individuals and organizations through coaching, training, and speaking programs. Due to the Kincade Fire in Sonoma County, there is no live Brew Ha Ha show on KSRO today. For this podcast episode, here is a repeat of our July, 2018 visit with Brian Hunt, founder of Moonlight Brewing Co. Please consider making a donation to the Red Cross which has done so much to help Sonoma County again during the fires this year.) Brian Hunt, Moonlight Brewing founder and brewmaster and Shannon Thomas, tasting room and social media manager, are in today with Herlinda Heras and Steve Jaxon. Mark Carpenter is away this week. Brian Hunt started Moonlight Brewing in 1992. He jokes that he needed to support his beer habit and he actually stared home brewing in his bedroom when he was in high school. He had some German friends who helped him too. He graduated from UC Davis brew school in 1980, where Michael Lewis was his brewing instructor. There were 43 brewing companies in the United States then. There are more than that number now in just Sonoma County. He worked for a while at Schlitz in Milwaukee. The guy who had bought Schlitz said, “It don’t matter what I put in the can as long as it has Schlitz on the label.” He was only interested in money and he was fired. Then they hired a brew master and they decided to make good beer again. But the brand was in decline and when they closed Milwaukee Stroh’s bought them. Then Pabst bought them. Moonlight Brewing will celebrate their 26th anniversary at an event in September 2018. They are the closest brewery to Coffey Park in Santa Rosa, which burned in the October 2017 fires. They have a new taproom that holds almost 50 people. They built a bar out of reclaimed redwood, furniture from Bergamot Alley and old school chairs, making a very comfortable place. Moonlight Brewing is known for a beer they produce called Death and Taxes. They are snacking on some popcorn called Hippie Dust, which has Nutritional Yeast on it, which is tasty and very nutritious. Herlinda Heras tells about how spent grain from brewing is being used by bakers, such as one in Forestville, and that bread is available on Saturdays. They have a taproom open Thursday and Friday at 4 and Saturday and Sunday at 1. It’s the third location that they have had. They also make Bloody Mary popcorn and Maple Syrup popcorn. Their beer called Death and Taxes is one of the first beers he made at Moonlight. It’s a San Francisco style black lager. He has found that in Europe, people are used to there being local versions of beer named for cities or regions, while here, people act surprised at the idea. Shannon says everyone remembers where they were when they first taste Death and Taxes. Brian says that because it’s clean and crisp, it’s great for California. Brian describes the Lagunitas Beer Circus in London from his point of view. He gets to serve beer to people who like beer, but there are trapeze artists, burlesque, bikes, and a crazy goofy atmosphere. “See things you can’t unsee” is their slogan. As for his hop philosophy, he also likes to make beer without hops. He says hops are just a spice, but that you can put other things in beer to flavor it. He just really loves a drinkable beer.

Then they hired a brew master and they decided to make good beer again. But the brand was in decline and when they closed Milwaukee Stroh’s bought them. Then Pabst bought them. Moonlight Brewing will celebrate their 26th anniversary at an event in September. He says it’s just a spice, but that you can put other things in it to flavor it. He just really loves a drinkable beer.
In this episode Kim interviews colleague and fellow therapist Julie Clockston who provides detailed insight into what emotional abuse is and how to recognize it. They talk about specific signs to be aware of that one might not otherwise consider to be emotional abuse. You might be surprised at some of the behaviors that are considered emotionally abusive. The discussion goes deep as they talk about the differences between psychological abuse and emotional abuse, and explain in detail terms like "love bombing", "flying monkeys" and "gas lighting", which are all behaviors that are red flags signaling emotional abuse in a relationship. anice Luck, Albright College women's basketball coach, shares with Zeke the story of the Lions' remarkable season. They were 23-6 overall, including 16-0 in the MAC Commonwealth Conference during the regular season, and made their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Plagued by turnovers, they lost to Messiah 53-50 in the MAC Commonwealth Championship Game. Albright rebounded to beat Piedmont 64-54 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. But Marymount's powerful inside game was too much for the Lions in a second-round 68-59 loss. Albright had reached the NCAA Sweet 16 the previous season. The Lions reached 20 wins and the MAC Commonwealth title game for the third straight season. “This past season we had a very difficult non-conference schedule,” Luck tells Zeke. “It made some of the easier competition seem even easier.” Nina Mazzarelli, their top 3-point shooter, was the leading scorer at 14.7 per game, followed by Alysha Lofton at 11.8, Shannon Thomas at 11.5 and Devan Horka at 11. Lofton, a junior, was named Women's Basketball Coaches Association All-America honorable mention for also averaging 9.4 rebounds a game (second in the conference). The All-MAC Commonwealth Conference first-team selection had 13 double-doubles and 21 double-digit scoring games. Her 76 steals ranked third in the conference. Next year also looks promising. “We have four returning starters,” Luck tells Zeke. “They will be seniors.” But all that returning talent can crimp recruiting. “This year was a little rough recruiting because we have so many returning players,” Luck tells Zeke. “Everybody wants to play right away. Athleticism seems to get us where we are today. I’m always looking for that and height. There is a lot more athleticism in women’s basketball today. I want kids who are going to be active on campus.” Another change in college women’s basketball is they play four quarters instead of two halves. “That’s because the WNBA plays four quarters,” Luck says. She played at Albright but upon graduation her career plan didn’t include coaching her alma mater. “I wish I could say that it was a fairy tale and all but I was a psych business major,” Luck tells Zeke. “Looking back, everything happened the way it should have. I love seeing the kids mature, grow up and graduate.”

Let's face it – relationships of all types can really be difficult. That's especially true when we find ourselves living, associating or working with individuals who use psychological or spiritual abuse as a method of harm. A surprising number of people exhibit various personality disorder characteristics that manifest themselves in behaviors toward those closest to them. Our guest in this episode has a unique window on this world in her counseling practice focusing on recovery from hidden abuse. In this episode, we discuss Shannon Thomas's choice to enter the field, how she developed her career into her own business today, the six stages she uses to guide her clients toward recovery, her perspective of how and why psychological and spiritual abuse occurs today, and the signs we might use to recognize that we ourselves are in a toxic relationship and then what we can do about it.
