070 | Kendra Toothill: Uncovering the Emotional Stories Behind Our Scars

Soul Inspired Gurl

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 29, 2023 52:09

Hey beautiful souls, This episode is a fascinating discussion with Kendra Toothill -- We talk all about SCARS.   And before you press 'skip' and move on because you can't imagine what scars has to do with the quality of your present day life ... pull a chair up. Turns out that the scars we carry (visible and invisible) hold potent stories and the work that Kendra does helps uncover and heal both the physical and emotional energy within.   Kendra began discovering the potential of scar tissue as an Athletic Therapist working in elite-level sports over ten years ago.   Over her professional career, she has been refining her geeky scar obsession, which has ultimately birthed a holistic healing method that helps people make sense of their multiple health symptoms in an integrative way, using scars as an anchor point into deep physical, emotional and energetic healing.   In this episode we talk about: The definition of scar and what role they play in the healing process. How Kendra came to this work and made her way into this niche treatment. From Athletic Therapist to scar and deep fascial work and working with women who do breast explant surgery. How scars contribute to various bodily dysfunctions, including digestive and breathing problems, nervous system issues, anxiety, and chronic pain. Working on scars to assist the body in rewiring more productive nervous system patterns. The role of emotional and energetic healing in the scar treatment process. The emotional implications of surgery, injuries and often birthing experiences that are held in the scar tissue of the body. The dysfunction in surrounding muscles and how the scar attempts to priotize the healing of tissue to provide safety and security. The opportunity for emotional and physical healing when you address scars in the body. What PDTR (Proprioceptive Deep Tendon Reflex) treatment is and how Kendra uses it in her treatment. Kendra's in-person work in Uvita, Costa Rica as well as her online offerings and in-person retreats in Austin, Texas.   Timestamp of today's episode: 00:00 Praises Kendra's impactful work with scars. 04:51 Fascination with scars led to healing practice. 10:30 Body compensates for injuries, requires ongoing care. 14:16 Emotional healing through physically working scar tissue. 16:28 Learning to work with emotional scars deeply. 20:24 Remaining neutral while observing client's emotional connection. 24:44 Courage in holistic practice, acknowledging emotions crucial. 28:38 PDTR quickly rewires nervous system, removes trauma. 31:08 Scar tissue affects body dysregulation, needing rewiring. 33:46 Diverse experiences after breast explant surgery. 37:43 Physical injury led to self-doubt, introspection, healing. 41:40 Avoid stimulus, focus on natural healing process. 44:17 Developing online sessions and in-person retreats. 48:37 Gratitude for listeners and call to action.   Notable moments during the episode: The Transformative Power of Healing Scars: "And it just kind of began this experiment of really seeing how much you can unpack in a single scar. And so it has a huge hold and restraint physically on the tissues local but also general to the whole body and all the body systems. But it has this really important piece that I really love that opens up the whole kind of gateway of what really a healing journey is and that's working with the emotional body and how the energetic signature can really get literally entangled and encapsulated inside the scar tissue." — Kendra Toothill  The Significance of Scar Tissue in Healing Processes: "The scar is just any kind of mending process that has happened where the tissue has healed in some way to form a different bond. The actual components of scar tissue is different than your muscle tissue or your skin or your ligament tendon." — Kendra Toothill  Respecting the Body's Healing Process: "So when people do hurt themselves and they do have an open wound from accident surgery, giving birth, I always say, like, step one, let the body do what it needs and wants to do. It is seeking a solid, firm, stable anchor point." — Kendra Toothill  Healing Emotional Trauma Through Scar Tissue Therapy: "And why I love working with the emotions in this way, using the body as a way to stay grounded and in connection with yourself, is when these emotions come up to be processed, you're pretty embodied at that point, like you're building a relationship up with the scar. You're understanding your processes and why things are happening." — Kendra Toothill  Emotional Scar Tissue and Healing: "And if you were a little child, that created a lot of confusion and that energetic signature of feeling abandoned goes right into the scar tissue." — Kendra Toothill  Emotional Healing and Physical Contact: "You can't grab happiness or fear out of the air, but when you work with it from being in your body and touching your body and making contact with yourself, it allows those emotions to be worked and explored in a more nourishing way." — Kendra Toothill    More About Kendra Toothill:   Kendra Toothill began discovering the potential of scar tissue as an Athletic Therapist working in elite-level sports over ten years ago. Over her professional career, she has been refining her geeky scar obsession, which has ultimately birthed a holistic healing method that helps people make sense of their multiple health symptoms in an integrative way, using scars as an anchor point into deep physical, emotional and energetic healing. As best she can, Kendra strives to walk her talk, which is centered around being empowered through your own healing process, taking chances, being curious (& dorky!), not taking life too seriously and swallowing the "red pill" of self-responsibility, self-awareness and living a life aligned to truth. Kendra now lives in Costa Rica, and when she is not guiding people through a health and healing process, you will find her exploring nature, enjoying exotic fruits and soaking up the epic sunshine!   INSTAGRAM   Working With Laura + Attending Retreats: WEBSITE INSTAGRAM I have recently opened up some opportunities for women to work 1:1 with me in personal leadership coaching. This year my group programs are on pause … I can feel a deep level of 1:1 work that's emerging for me and I'm creating as much space as possible for what's coming through.   I have two upcoming group retreats:  April 6-13, 2024 Mexico, July 19-23, 2024 Ontario, Canada.  Currently both these retreats are DISCOUNTED for Early Bird Rates (ends Dec 31, 2023) I also curate 1:1 personal, 4-5 day deep-dive retreats that are intimate and powerful – here in Costa Rica. Before Keith and Joe knew each other, they independently dreamed of moving to Costa Rica and opening a B&B! Sounds like the beginning of a rom-com but it's a true story. They met, fell in love and discovered each other's obsession with the central American country. The only question remaining was whether they would live on the beach or in the jungle. The couple found the best of both worlds. Their home and B&B, Nature's Edge Boutique Hotel, are located up a mountain, just a short drive to the charming beach town of Uvita. Find out more about this Costa Rican adventure on Episode 147 of Retire There with Gil & Gene.

In today's episode, we hear from Sarah Wu, a highly respected permaculturist & herbalist living and teaching in Costa Rica. I sat down with Sarah at the Envision Festival earlier this year to learn about some of the regenerative initiatives the festival has implemented as part of its mission.    Envision is a multi-day music festival with several stages and thousands of participants. By day, the focus is characterized by consciousness-raising workshops and presentations on permaculture, community-building, yoga, wellness, the embodiment of the divine masculine and feminine, and honor of indigenous ways. All this is presented with an overall theme of mindfulness and play.    By night, the arena becomes flooded by a secondary population of party-goers enjoying the many talented DJs and musicians playing on Envision's many stages. You can find everything from electronic music to jam bands and local folk artists to ecstatic dance on the padded yoga stage. The experience can be overwhelming for some, and advice should be heeded to pace yourself, hydrate, and wash your hands frequently.   The festival brings with it a significant impact on the local town of Uvita, both in the ways of a boosted economy as well as occasional exhausts of some of its more limited resources. Like with all things in life, there exists a dichotomy that the festival producers have worked to bring balance to over the years.    In our interview, beyond sharing details about the thousands of trees they've planted onsite, their extensive composting system, the no-single-use-dishware policy, and the education programs that Sarah has initiated through the Village Witches program, we touch on the reasons why Envision isn't using compost toilets anymore and what a future solution might look like.   One of my favorite parts of the interview is when we reflect on valuing each of our different niches in humanity's ecosystem.    Festivals of this size are here to stay, and they can prove to be a life-changing experience for many people. At the same time, many festivals can get a bad rap for the negative impact of so many people converging on an area for a short time. While the convergence has a temporary impact on the wildlife, for instance, it is worth recognizing that the food forest of this festival site was previously nothing more than a cattle pasture.    Their internally organized dishwashing system diverts hundreds of thousands of plastic waste products from the landfill each year. The Village Witches program has cultivated a culture of well-being amidst a party scene, bringing herbalism to the mainstream.    The festival has also done a lot to bring hundreds of jobs to the local economy before, during, and after the event. They've also done a lot of work over the years to harmonize the ecosystem of the festival production, staff, artists, attendees, volunteers, and other influences.   In the interview, we didn't cover what Envision's non-profit foundation Somos el Cambio continues to do for the neighboring region.    With the leadership of Federico Gutierez, Somos el Cambio Has planted over 17,000 trees directly by Envision staff and volunteers, And over 80,000 more trees with Envision's support. They've donated $18,000 of medical equipment to the local hospital in Ciudad Cortes for COVID relief efforts. $7,800 was donated to the Uvita community food bank, a Foundation in charge of identifying and distributing food to those families in greatest need. More than 4,600 trees have been planted with the local water board to protect the springs that feed water to all of Uvita. Eight monkey bridges have been built through a cooperative alliance with The Electrical Institute of Costa Rica. They've donated $17k to fund local water system upgrades. And over 30 tons of trash have been recollected during clean-up activities nationwide.    If you'd like to catch a glimpse of some of the workshops that took place at Envision, I recorded a few of them for the Envision Festival Playlist on our YouTube Channel. Among them is a panel discussion on the challenges that can arise in Building Eco-Villages, a talk about Decolonizing Permaculture, and some other exciting bits.   If you're new to Regeneration Nation Costa Rica, subscribe to the podcast to stay updated with future releases. We are so excited to host our second mom-daughter retreat in Costa Rica this coming summer!  This mom-daughter retreat is special in so many ways. This retreat offers an opportunity for you and your daughter to be together in a distraction-free environment. At the same time, you'll also get to experience so many amazing things:  Getting out of your comfort zoneWorking on your mental game (yes, both of you!)Working on your mom-daughter connection and more! To learn more about the retreat, and also join one of the info sessions that we're hosting,go to kristinabreanne.com/info.  We don't want you to miss it. That's why I'm here to answer some common questions that we've received about our mom-daughter retreat in Costa Rica in July 2023.  When is the retreat? The upcoming retreat will be held from July 1-8, 2023. You will fly into San Jose, Costa Rica at any time on June 30th and then we'll all meet and head to Bodhi Surf & Yoga in Uvita, Costa Rica, on the morning of July 1st. Your hotel room for June 30th is covered, too!  What will we be doing? I'm not going to give you all the details of our retreat because that's a surprise. But basically, the overview is that we will be doing a combination of surfing, yoga, and mindset lessons every single day.  Our partners take care of the surfing lessons, which happen five times during that retreat, and the yoga lessons, which also happen five times. And then we also have five specific mental training lessons that are a combination of things for your athlete and then things for you as a mom, as well as things that you do with your daughter.  We have so many fun activities in store for both moms and athletes.  There will also be some surprise adventures but rest assured they are safe and retreat attendees get to vote and help shape the experience..  Do I need to be in Good Shape? This is the question that I think everybody wants to know. And the answer is "No, you don't need to be." You don't need to be in peak performance shape, you don't even need to be in good shape.  You just have to be willing to do some basics in surfing and also in yoga.  In terms of surfing, you can honestly choose your adventure. The instructors will give you so many options for where you are and your ability level.  You don't need to be in phenomenal shape to do our surfing and yoga activities. **********Helpful Links:Visit our podcast website for more on this episodeJoin our FREE training for Sports Moms - How To Strengthen Your Athlete Daughter's Mental Game So She Believes In Herself As Much As You DoThe BEST way to help us spread the word and get this information into the hands of millions of parents, coaches, and female athletes is by leaving a rating and review on Apple Podcasts. He's got an amazing record of unmatched excellence as a Global Luxury Ambassador.member of the National Association of Realtors.  An expansive knowledge of commercial properties and boutique hospitality markets throughout Central America. So what would you say really stands out to you about what makes your town so special, that our friends across North America and around the world may not be aware of? Actually my wife is a Costa Rican. She's from a large town called San Isidro, which is about 30 minutes away from Dominical. The name of the area has been changed to the Ballena Coastline. That includes Uvita, Dominical all the way down to Ojochal. This amazing beautiful coastline that is attached by a road that goes all along the coast. You've got these great little towns. You've got great beaches. It's an area where the whales come and breed every year. We've got great scuba diving, phenomenal little restaurants and you can really be at the beach at one day in the morning and then you can drive within 30 minutes and be at one of the highest peaks in Costa Rica or about an hour and you can be at five amazing waterfalls in Costa Rica. And then you can be at the highest peak which is called Mount Chirripó, Costa Rica. So you can really go from beachfront all the way up to five thousand feet or even higher to an amazing area which is just beautiful. If you want to be at the beach and hot or you want to get up the mountains become cool. The small town of Dominical itself has grown at a very slow pace over the last couple of years. I've been here about 21 years now and it is continuing to grow at a pace that's comfortable for everybody. You've got new restaurants coming in, but it's still a small town. It's a very Bohemian small feeling. It's got a great farmers market every Friday which is amazing. They have music and vegetables and everything you can imagine. We've also got a great organic store, which we call our Whole Foods. And then you've got the array of different kinds like Indian food. Great surf. There's great mountain biking. There's great dirt biking. It's a phenomenal place to come for paragliders. At any given night you're not just going to the town of Dominical. You go 30 kilometers north of us you've got Manuel Antonio, which is amazing national park, the marina, another array of great restaurants, things going on. And to the south of us we have Ojochal, Uvita which has all the beaches and everything, and restaurants as well. There's just so much to do in a small area. And then within two hours south of us you have the whole Osa Peninsula which opens up to you, Pavones, Montopalos, Golfito, another large marina project there. So we're kind of that in between, you know you've got the Golfito Marina the Manuel Antonio Marina and then you've got Jaco which is about two hours north of us now. In that stretch is kind of consider us like the little French Riviera you've got where the mountains come down to the ocean and then they get real steep. You get amazing views that great jungle atmosphere which you would think of Costa Rica and it's just a beautiful place to be. A good friend of mine speaking of Uvita, he moved here from California, Navy Veteran and he had a great experience using your Coldwell Banker office to purchase his house. He's got a great things to say about you guys and what you could do and. I come from California myself. Did my undergrad at University of Santa Cruz, and we used to love to see the whales and the wildlife out there. It's an amazing adventure.

Five Good Questions Podcast

The Hikecast is a show where interesting people take me on their favorite hikes or walks and we talk about big ideas in an unconstrained format.  No planned agendas, just deep conversations, recorded out in nature. The idea is for you to put on The Hikecast and get outside to simulate taking a hike with us.  I want you to feel like you're there with us out in nature. Care to join us on a hike? :) My guest for this episode is Kim House.  Kim has been an ordained Zen Buddhist Teacher since 2008. When not leading meditation and guiding students with their mindfulness practice, he works as an information technology consultant specializing in helping non-profits. Kim lives in Wisconsin in the warmer months with his wife. In the winter months Kim is often at his son and daughter-in-law's retreat center (floretreatcenter.org) in Uvita, Costa Rica. Kim helps with meditation at the many yoga and wellness retreats held at Flo. We went on a balmy afternoon hike near Uvita, Costa Rica. Please enjoy this hikecast with Kim House. ********************* Also, I'm announcing the release of my first literary effort: The Rebel Allocator It’s a coming-of-age story of a young man who learns about business and life from an unlikely teacher. Imagine The Karate Kid meets Thorndike’s The Outsiders. You’re right, it’s probably not what you were expecting, but I have my fingers crossed that you’ll really enjoy it. It's available on amazon now in both print and digital formats. With gratitude, Jake
