In this episode, we delve into the vibrant world of quilting and sustainability with Sherri Lynn Wood, a leader in the modern improv quilting movement.Sherri Lynn's creative journey began with a simple sundress that defied a sexist dress code, marking sewing as a source of expression and empowerment. Inspired by the abstract quilts of black makers, she embarked on a trajectory as a community-based artist focused on restorative social practice. Her best-selling book, "The Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters," is not just a guide to quilting; it's an exploration of flexible patterns, stitching techniques, and intuitive colour. Sherri Lynn's story unfolds against a backdrop of awards, including a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant, and artist residencies, one of which led her to create art entirely from materials scavenged from a city dump.Sherri Lynn is more than an artist; she's a community builder. Her BravePatch community operates on a heart-centred approach, valuing improv quilts and the unique visions each member brings. It's a space where everyone is both a mentee and mentor, fostering connections and celebrating differences. With a Master's in Fine Arts and a degree in Theological Studies, Sherri Lynn's work is a blend of art and purpose. Join us as we explore the transformative power of locally sourced fibres, sustainable quilting practices, and a community that cultivates sustainability and creativity. Through Sherri Lynn's guidance, discover the art of cultivating sustainable approaches to quilting and sourcing colour, creating a tapestry where every stitch tells a story of creativity and sustainability.Website: https://www.sherrilynnwood.com/Instagream: @sherrilynnwoodBravepatch School: https://www.bravepatch.school/Support the showJoin The Green Stitcher's Hive at https://thegreenstitchershive.mn.co/ Follow Bridget O'Flaherty @bridgetoflahertytextiles on Instagram and @thesustainablequilter on Facebook. On Sunday,  December 23, 1973,  John Swalley, his 5 year son and 8 year old daughter, Sherri, left Columbus, Ohio and began their journey to Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The park had just opened in 1971 and John thought this trip would be the perfect  Christmas gift for his children. But even the most perfectly laid plans could not have prepared this family for the evil that awaited them. It's been 50 years since Sherri  was murdered during a pitstop in Atlanta, GA. Her case remains unsolved. My wish this holiday season is for Sherri's case to be solved and justice to be served. Would you like to get more creative with your fabric scraps, but you're just not sure how to approach it? You could be missing out on a whole heap of fun, if only you could learn how to be more receptive to their potential. My guest this week is improv quilting artist and teacher, Sherri Lynn Wood. Sherri Lynn defines the two types of creativity as ‘active' and ‘receptive'. As garment sewers, we are used to actively creating the garments that we've envisioned. However, Sherri Lynn encourages us to access the second type by playing with fabric scraps and existing textiles, to see what we can create without a clear idea of the finished outcome. Whether that play becomes a quilt, a garment, or something else… Find everything Sherri Lynn Wood is involved in, past and present, on her website. The quilts may go by different names: I make memory quilts, Sherri makes passage quilts, but they both point to the stories and energy that our clothes contain even after we pass.In this conversation, Sherri and I take a deep dive on what it means to work with clothing as a channel for processing life and loss, and we discuss: ① the emotional aspects of working with clothing in quilts ② practical ideas for collaborating on a memory quilt ③ self-care for quilters doing grief work ⤷ Learn more about THE QUILTY NOOK here ⤷ Get your free NOOK trial here⤷ Enter here for your chance to win a FREE YEAR on the NOOK!

In addition to being a podcast host, she also writes for James Renner's website Philosophy of Crime.Excerpt from an article Naptime Nancy wrote for the Philosophy of Crime website."A Christmas time family road trip’s one night stop on the way to Disney World, ended in horror. John Swalley of Columbus, OH, had asked his friend, Clyde Williamson, if he and his two children could stay the night at Clyde’s place in Atlanta, GA. Swalley didn’t want to worry about running out of gas too far from a gas station on their road trip. Clyde and John had met while working at the Westinghouse Electric Company plant in Mansfield, Ohio. When they reached the Pace Setters apartment complex, John’s eleven year old daughter, Sherri Lynn Swalley, and her five year old brother were allowed to go play around the apartment complex with the other children living there.A couple of hours later, a neighbor of Clyde Williamson’s, Carolyn Ellis, was cooking up a big dinner for the guests and asked Sherri to go round up her father and Clyde for dinner around approximately 8PM. That was the last time Sherri Lynn Swalley was seen alive."https://www.newspapers.com/clip/41078879/murder-of-sherri-swalley/

Sherri Lynn and I met a few months ago at an event and I liked her a TON immediately and I wanted y'all to meet her! So she flew to Nashville and we sat in my office and chatted for a good long time and this conversation is super special. AND. Your friend Annie majorly screwed up in the recording. (UGH YOU GUYS. I AM SO SORRY.) So Producer Chad worked incredibly hard to make this one sound good enough for y'all to hear- and he did a magical job. Sherri and I both listened to the quality of this and while it isn't the best (again, 100% my fault), it is too good a conversation to not share it. Good thing she is a comedienne and can laugh off dealing with my mistakes. Make sure you grab a copy of her book I Want To Punch You In The Face But I Love Jesus. :) It's legit funny. . . . . . http://anniefdowns.com #thatsoundsfunpodcast ... join in the conversation wherever hashtags are welcome. :)

You'd think with a radio audience of millions and two best-selling books, feeling like a failure wouldn't be an issue. But you'd be wrong. As a child he was diagnosed with Asperger’s and an eye issue that makes it difficult to look people in the eye, yet remarkably Brant Hansen is brilliant communicator. Even more remarkable is that—given how he was treated by his dad (a pastor)—Brant spends most of his time talking about his faith. He’s convinced that most people want to laugh and be silly (and that belief shows up daily on his radio show), but Brant is also convinced that most people don’t experience God in many of the ways they are led to believe they should. His story is powerful and heartbreaking…but his perspective is refreshing and 100% honest. Brant Hansen is a best-selling author, nationally syndicated radio host, and advocate for healing children with correctible disabilities through CURE International. He’s won multiple “personality of the year” awards for work on his offbeat and quirky radio show, which is heard on more than 250 radio stations around the country and has more than 2 million listeners. Brant also has a wildly popular podcast with his friend and radio producer, Sherri Lynn called “The Brant and Sherri Oddcast.”

And be realistic on that time frame, like maybe five minutes. And be consistent, consistency is everything when it comes to building any kind of practice.
