Welcome to the final episode of our 3-part series “Men's Health Table Talk, Nutrition and Cancer related Andropause” by UCC student Dietitians Daniel Coakley and Emma Barrett.      So far on this series, we have spoken with RD Katie Johnston who provided us with some very insightful and evidence-based information about the nutritional consequences oftentimes faced by male cancer survivors as a result of their cancer treatment. We also chatted about the changes that occur in body composition along with the importance of evidence-based information when it comes to supplements and potential dietary changes.       In our second episode, we spoke with coach and personal trainer Aidan Hunter, who provided us with a very personal account of his own journey with cancer having faced testicular cancer twice in his mid 20's. Aidan's honest and candid discussion was a powerful reminder of how important early detection and screening is when it comes to cancer prevention.       For our final episode, we will explore evidence based recommendations to reduce cancer recurrence for male cancer survivors. These guidelines can also be applied to people listening who would like to reduce their risk of cancer.    In the second half of this episode, we will be chatting with Health Promotion Officer Shirley O'Shea about her expertise in public health and working with individuals with cancer. Shirly's main role is centered around physical activity promotion with a special interest in exercise oncology. We explore the current services and support available for male cancer survivors going through or who have been through treatment. We also discuss strategies to encourage more men to access healthcare and health-related services, aiming to break the stigma surrounding men speaking openly about their health.     Links to some useful resources and topics discussed in today's episode:    World Cancer Research Fund: https://www.wcrf.org/     International Agency for Research on Cancer: https://www.iarc.who.int/     HSE Healthy Eating Guidelines https://www.hse.ie/healthyeatingguidelines/     HSE Healthy Eating Active Living https://www2.hse.ie/living-well/.     Get Ireland Walking https://www.getirelandwalking.ie/     Drink Aware: https://www.drinkaware.ie/    The Irish Cancer Society: https://www.cancer.ie/     Cork Cancer Support House: https://corkcancersupport.ie/     Men Against Cancer: https://macprostatecancersupport.ie/men-against-cancer/      Research papers mentioned in today's episode:    Recent review on common symptoms and conditions related to endocrine disorders among survivors of adult-onset cancer:  Link-Rachner CS, Göbel A, Jaschke NP, Rachner TD. Historian with Reagan Expertise Deems Biden 'Worst President In History'

Distinguished historian, renowned for his biographies of Ronald Reagan, has expressed his critical perspective on Joe Biden's tenure as President, predicting he might end up as the 'most ineffective' leader the United States Executive Branch has ever seen. The historian, Craig Shirley by name, offered these candid thoughts in reaction to a recently conducted survey that rated Biden higher than Reagan, placing him as the 14th on the list of 'most outstanding presidents' in the Nation's history. In response to this survey, Shirley stated, 'It gave me a sense of unease,' qualifying the survey's so-called experts as skewed towards the left. He shared, that in his opinion, Biden has not lived up to the demanding role of the presidency. 'Biden will, in time, be seen by impartial historians as the least effective president in the annals of the United States,' he conveyed in his interaction with the Washington Examiner. Shirley's latest work, a book titled 'The Search for Reagan', reinforces the author's credentials as a leading authority on the 40th president. He is also on the cusp of publishing another insightful biography, this time on the life and political journey of an earlier executive-wielding tycoon, ex-President Donald Trump. Shirly's thoughts on Biden's performance, however, did not stop there.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The values her family and church instilled in her as a young girl are ones Shirley still holds dear: generosity, kindness, and empathy. In the Mennonite community, she says, “a child in need was everyone's problem to solve, not only the parents. If I saw a ‘plain person' in a long dress or wearing a bonnet or a plain suit on the street, I would never have hesitated to ask for a ride, for information or even for money. All through my childhood I was being trained to be that same kind of beacon of kindness for others.” That beacon of kindness shines brightly in the recently released book, The Mindful Grandparent: The Art of Loving Our Children's Children, which Shirley co-wrote with Marilyn McEntyre. It's a guide to helping grandchildren live with intention and be attentive to others, to nature, and to the diverse, beautiful, and troubled social world around them. The Mindful Grandparent covers wide-ranging topics such as cultivating curiosity, giving meaningful gifts, helping children explore difficult topics, building a grandparent team, honoring adult children's boundaries, and managing technology. Shirley Billot is the founder of the organic beauty brand Kadalys. Shirley is a global expert in banana science who founded Kadalys in 2012. Kadalys specializes in upcycling and eco-extraction of the banana plant to develop 100% natural bio-active ingredients generated by bananas from Martinique and Guadeloupe in the French Caribbean using an eco-responsible approach. Kadalys is the first natural cosmetic brand made with banana tree antioxidants. The banana plant holds a special place in the traditional medicine of the French Caribbean islands where it is used for its soothing, healing, and revitalizing cosmetics properties. The Kadalys brand won 8 beauty awards in 2 years. Shirly makes sure that she looks out for her entrepreneur community in the French overseas department to work together during the COVID crisis and produce hand sanitizers for distribution to the French overseas departments. Shirley talks about where she found funding for the research component of her business (she holds several patents for her banana research, go girl!) and support to grow the business. The banana producers in the Kadalys supply chain are also shareholders in the business. Not only is Shirley breaking ground in her banana science research and eco-conscious production, but she is also exhibiting a business model that takes care of its supply chain and views them as business partners in what she calls benevolent capitalism. Shirley faced some challenges finding funding after the early-stage funding for banana science research.According to her, the French Caribbean Island of Martinique is seen as a tourist destination and not an entrepreneurship hub. Therefore, there are few funds interested in funding entrepreneurs on the Island. She was however fortunate to receive investment from Josh Game with Junction Injunction dedicated to supporting African women entrepreneurs.
