When news surfaced in March, that schools across Australia were recording record levels of violence, with a huge number of principals having either suffered physical abuse, last year, or witnessed it, education reporter Nicole Precel wanted to find out more. What, if anything, could stop principals from being bitten, and teachers from being pushed down stairs, by students? And turn around the often plummeting academic records and mental health of the students at these schools? Today, Nicole Precel, on how two determined principals dramatically altered the culture of a school dubbed, only six years ago, “Australia’s worst school”. And the trauma they needed to confront, in order to do it.Subscribe to The Age & SMH: https://subscribe.smh.com.au/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

President Trump's tariffs kick in for the so-called ‘worst offenders' with the minimum rate on certain Chinese goods hitting 104 per cent. Trump says the U.S. remains resolute. Asian equities are firmly in the red. European markets and Wall Street are both braced for more heavy sell-offs. U.S. Treasury yields also spike. The tariffs feud between Elon Musk and President Trump's top trade advisor Peter Navarro intensifies following disagreement over Tesla's auto assembly practices. Musk calls Navarro ‘dumber than a sack of bricks'. In Germany, the CDU/CSU and SPD are reportedly close to a coalition deal following 13 hours of negotiations. The southern border was a hot-button issue during the campaign, and President Donald Trump continues his push for immigration reform as he enters his second week in office. Former acting ICE Director during the first Trump administration, Jonathan Fahey joins the Rundown to discuss the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigrants, who could be targeted by ICE, and how the Trump White House plans to enforce its reforms. This week began with a tech selloff in the markets after investors were spooked by Chinese AI startup DeepSeek. Experts are calling it “AI's Sputnik moment,” as this China-based company produced a vastly less expensive product that knocked ChatGPT off the number one spot in the Apple App Store. R Street Institute policy analyst Adam Thierer about how China's “world-class AI model” is a wake-up call for America's tech giants and AI innovation. The US is reeling from a deadly terrorist attack in New Orleans in the early hours of New Year’s Day, while a second possible terrorist attack has unfolded in Las Vegas. US Correspondent for 9News, Johnathan Kearsley told Dean Miller on 4BC Summer Breakfast, 'He drove past security, police cars, then around security fencing, if you could even call it that, and then straight onto the footpath.' 'And then it was tragedy that struck, at least 10 people were dead, 35 people injured. The death toll could climb, given there are still a number of people who are very, very seriously injured.' 'This driver was then alleged to have opened fire on police before he was shot dead, leaving revelers running for their lives to essentially try and save themselves on what is supposed to be a happy, joyous night.'See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

All over the place this week. Mark's in Port Douglas without a shirt on, watch out ladies, Nick is at home in Melbourne, as is Dan, and the wonders of technology means we're still yakking golf!Over the weekend Mark watched the highlights of the LIV teams event, and loved it - he describes the format as the perfect teams event structure, the best he has seen, and says LIV have nailed it. Nick watched the last 2 or 3 holes, and said it was fantastic. We discuss it, and Cam Smith's performance in particular. Mark chats about Dustin Johnson's backswing. Nick tells us about the time he went to Shaquille O'Neal's joint for a barbie in Florida!Back to Cam Smith, Nick and Mark are looking forward to commentating the Queensland PGA even moreso now that Cam has confirmed he is playing. Leads to a convo about the Australian Open - stand alone vs mixed. We've discussed it previously, the guys not a fan of the mixed format. Mark has said for years that a challenge with golf coverage in Australia is the lack of camera's available, and this is one reason why mixed tournaments are hard to cover effectively. He outlines his breakthrough moment in the 1992 Open and how it was captured on camera, a game changer for him financially as a young player, but this doesn't happen enough now.We discuss Jeff Guan's horrific eye injury, and what it may or may not mean for his career. We're all thinking of him, the prognosis is yet to become clear. And we remember the 10-year anniversary of, in hindsight, a highly amusing occurrence to do with golf and Mark Allen. It resulted in Mark being awarded the 'Worst in Sport' on America's ESPN. We play the audio.Top 5 from Nick is on his favourite Pro-Ams, thanks to our mates at Southern Golf Club. The #1 surprises Mark. Nick talks about playing with a couple of big music stars in the US, one we've heard of, one we haven't.Feedback thanks to Flinders Golf Club, an historical treasure, and there are a couple of members of the Talk Birdie Wolfpack taking issue with Nick. And Damien gives all of us a whack over some comments he didn't like on last week's pod.Nick goes around the world with the PING global results, and we wrap with a masterclass from Mark - thanks to the watchMynumbers app on Cam Smith's short follow through with his putting of late.If you're enjoying the podcast, please tell a friend or two about it. On France's surprise parliamentary election. The left-wing 'New Popular Front' came a surprise first, for now putting a halt to expectations that the far-right Rassemblement National would soon enter government. We talk to political scientist and commentator Charles Devellennes, and ask: What was Macron's gamble in calling this early election? Is becoming Prime Minister actually a bad thing for your future prospects? Is the Left actually 'far left' and the Right 'far right'? Is Le Pen a fascist? Did the Left actually save Macron? Why not an alliance between Left and Right against the centre? Will France opt for the undemocratic 'Italian Solution' and appoint an unelected technocrat? Can Macron's party and his style of rule survive Macron eventually being out of office? Does the uncertainty mean France is back to the postwar 4th Republic? Is this continuity? Something new? Links: The Macron Régime: The Ideology of the New Right in France, Charles Devellennes

Big week at Talk Birdie To Me HQ, plenty to discuss, and Mark is excited to be playing one of Nick's fave courses this week, Cathedral. We chat Ripper GC's LIV win in Singapore, second in a row for the Aussies. Hopeless last year, on fire this year, says Nick. The hopeless team now in LIV is the Majesticks. Nick and Mark discuss playing Sentosa - water always a factor. And we kick around how many majors Brooks Koepka will end up winning. Currently on 5, Nick & Mark reckon by the end of his career he'll have 8.Nick mentions the doco 'Duel in the Sun', Mark says that if you haven't seen it you are banned from listening to the pod until you do. And he wants to know what you think of it. Onto TPC Craig Ranch. Mark says it looked poor on TV, he's not a fan. Nick agrees. This inspires Nick's Top 5 for later in the show: his Top 5 worst courses on tour.Last week we discussed the Golf Digest Top 100 list, which Mark was unhappy about - specifically Cape Wickham being named #1. Today he doubles down saying that Cape Wickham is not even close to #1, and looks at the criteria used by Golf Digest. Mark feels it's too complex, needs to be simplified, and because of the spectacular outlook at Cape Wickham, that is why it got the nod. Nick wonders how consistently playable Cape Wickham is, given the winds on the island. On Thursday this week we'll have a bonus pod with Steve Keipert of Golf Digest to discuss the Top 100 list with him, get his rationale for the rankings, and give him an opportunity to respond to Marks comments last week.We chat about LIV Adelaide and how much it cost to put on. Following last weeks pod, Mark had a call from his mate James who works for LIV and says that he believes Mark's inside info on a couple of players leaving LIV to be incorrect. We'll get James on for a bonus pod at some point and get his thoughts.Top 5 from Nick on the worst courses on the PGA and European tours. Ouch!Lots of feedback, a few whacks this week, but we don't shy from that we're happy to cop a whack. We also realise we have a lack of prizes, and Mark has the idea to give away copies of his DVD which strangely didn't sell out - the ironically titled '87 ways to make golf simple'. And we need your input for pod listener Rob - what are the 'must play' courses for him in Northern NSW. Let us know and we'll read them out next week.Huge week in the PING global results from Nick, and Marks masterclass for watchMynumbers is on a flaw he discovered in his game last week.A huge thanks to our Talk Birdie partners:PING, they'll help you play your best, you can see your local golf shop or professional for a PING club fitting;the new watchMynumbers app, the most powerful data based golf app in the world, download from the App Store ;& the Golf Clearance Outlet, great prices on the best gear. Broadcast journalist, Harris Faulkner from Fox News, recently addressed the escalating issue of unlawful immigration during an episode of 'Outnumbered', critiquing the apparent lack of concern from the Biden administration for rigorous border control. As Faulkner sparked off the discussion, she apprised her team and audience of New York Gov. Kathy Hochul's decision to call upon the state's National Guard. This unexpected move is to deal with the massive influx of migrants in New York City and other regions across the state, which has garnered mixed reactions from both the Democratic and Republican parties. Faulkner made it clear that the current predicament in New York is not an isolated incident, but rather, it accurately mirrors what is happening regularly along the US-Mexico border. She highlighted the ongoing crisis in Eagle Pass, Texas, even showing a video clip of numerous migrants crossing the Rio Grande. The Fox News host underscored that recorded events have captured instances of Border Patrol agents granting migrants unrestricted movement within the nation. Faulkner shrewdly pointed towards President Biden's apparent lack of resolve in maintaining border security, despite the countless illegal crossings that have taken place since his inauguration. Faulkner raised serious concerns about the thoroughness of the screening procedures for incoming migrants, considering that border patrolling staff are overwhelmed by the sheer numbers. Quick migrant-processing seems to be the hasty solution, but she argues that this strategy fails to deter illegal entry, which should be the principal law enforcement objective. Faulkner lamented the border fiasco, saying that the state at the US South border hasn't ever been so desperate in recent times. She imparted some alarming numbers, sharing that sources from Customs and Border Protection reported encountering over 11,000 migrants within a single day. This staggering figure marked the highest daily total in recent memory. 'We have no inkling of their identities,' she asserted, emphasizing the murky nature of uncontrolled immigration and the potential risk it harbors.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In a move that reads more like a political thriller than reality, the village of Dolton has enlisted former Chicago mayor, Lori Lightfoot, to spearhead an investigation into current Mayor Tiffany Henyard's alleged misuse of taxpayer funds. Lightfoot, once ousted from office herself, is set to earn $400 an hour for delving into Henyard's financial dealings, including a questionable trip to Las Vegas and irregularities in hiring and payment practices. Critics are skeptical, questioning Lightfoot's effectiveness given her own turbulent tenure in Chicago. Yet, the village board asserts the necessity of this "fact-finding mission" to ensure government accountability and transparency. This episode unfolds against a backdrop of local governance gone awry, with Henyard accused of not just fiscal mismanagement but also curiously autocratic behavior. The saga encapsulates concerns around political accountability and the effective stewardship of public resources, resonating with broader debates on governance and ethical leadership. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/darien-dunstan3/message

Three news stories summarized & contextualized by analytic journalist Colin Wright.'Worst floods in decades' hit Kazakhstan and RussiaSummary: Worse than usual seasonal flooding in parts of northern Kazakhstan have led to the evacuation of tens of thousands of people, and similarly outsized flooding across the border in Russia has halted the operations of an oil refinery in Orsk.Context: This part of the continent often experiences flooding this time of year, but higher than usual volumes of melting snow have amplified these floods so that existing systems and infrastructure that help locals cope with them are insufficient to the task, and officials in both countries are warning that things could get worse in the coming days—more evacuations necessary and more damage caused—though they expect water levels to stabilize sometime around or shortly after April 20.—BBC NewsOne Sentence News is a reader-supported publication. Distinguished historian, renowned for his biographies of Ronald Reagan, has expressed his critical perspective on Joe Biden's tenure as President, predicting he might end up as the 'most ineffective' leader the United States Executive Branch has ever seen. The historian, Craig Shirley by name, offered these candid thoughts in reaction to a recently conducted survey that rated Biden higher than Reagan, placing him as the 14th on the list of 'most outstanding presidents' in the Nation's history. In response to this survey, Shirley stated, 'It gave me a sense of unease,' qualifying the survey's so-called experts as skewed towards the left. He shared, that in his opinion, Biden has not lived up to the demanding role of the presidency. 'Biden will, in time, be seen by impartial historians as the least effective president in the annals of the United States,' he conveyed in his interaction with the Washington Examiner. Shirley's latest work, a book titled 'The Search for Reagan', reinforces the author's credentials as a leading authority on the 40th president. He is also on the cusp of publishing another insightful biography, this time on the life and political journey of an earlier executive-wielding tycoon, ex-President Donald Trump. Shirly's thoughts on Biden's performance, however, did not stop there.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
