Everyone's lives would be better if we were rid of spam calls and messages, but we don't live in that reality. So most people rely on caller-ID apps or services to save themselves from the ordeal. In September last year, Bharti Airtel launched a spam fighting network free of cost to all users who have a VoLTE-enabled smartphone.Airtel says its AI-powered systems come across a call or message that seems sketchy based on call patterns, frequency, duration and other parameters to flag them as ‘suspected scam'.But like any anti-spam service, it has been showing a few cracks—all of which have consequences for both businesses and customers.Legitimate calls from businesses are flagged as suspected spam by its system, while calls from similar businesses are not. The other troubling problem is that it's a one-way system where the customer can't do anything about it. They cannot opt out of the service either. If your network operator says it's a suspected spam call when there's a number flashing on your screen, are you going to pick it up?And then there are businesses like Truecaller, which built their business using the crowdsourcing model and built a two-sided business where they made money from both individuals and businesses trying to reach these individuals. Truecaller helped legitimate businesses which were being marked as spam be validated as verified businesses for a fee.Something in all of this feels broken. What should ideally be free and reliable to save all customers from being scammed is not fully reliable or free. What's at stake? Where are the solutions? In episode 31 of Two by Two, hosts Rohin Dharmakumar and Praveen Gopal Krishnan try to find the answers with our guests for the week—Parag Kar, former vice president of government affairs at Qualcomm India and Southeast Asia; Chaitanya Chokkareddy, co-founder and CTO of Ozonetel, a cloud-based communication platform providing call-centre solutions for businesses; and The Ken reporter Rounak Kumar Gunjan.– – –Additional reading -Truecaller beat Trai to the punch with spam-call fixAirtel finds the gap between Truecaller and Trai– – –Help us find interesting women guests by filling out this survey - https://theken.typeform.com/to/KH0EOLGo– – –What you listened to is just the first 30 minutes of the conversation. Cultivating Your Online Persona: Balancing Privacy and Business Growth

In a recent podcast episode, I delved into a topic that's increasingly relevant in our digital age: the delicate balance between personal privacy and the necessary visibility for business growth. This discussion stemmed from a follow-up to a previous episode where I outlined my research stack for gathering information about potential contacts – a process that often involves using tools like Truecaller and general online searches. The catalyst for this conversation was a listener who, after trying this research method on herself, was shocked by the sheer volume of personal information available online. She considered herself a private individual, yet her digital footprint told a different story. This led to a crucial question: should we start deleting our online presence to protect our privacy? My response, particularly for business professionals, was a resounding no. Instead, I advocate for a strategic approach: cultivate and optimize your online persona. The Fear of Exposure vs. the Power of Connection It's understandable to feel exposed when you realize how much information is readily available about you online. However, in today's business landscape, a certain level of visibility is essential. Potential clients need to know, like, and trust you before they'll do business with you. And in the digital realm, that trust is often built through online research. If your online presence is minimal, or if the information available is haphazard and uncontrolled, you're missing a significant opportunity to build those crucial connections. The Strategy: Building a Business-Centric Online Presence Instead of shrinking from the internet, we should strategically expand our presence with content that benefits our business. This means: * Focus on Business Content: Create and share valuable content that showcases your services, products, unique value proposition, and ideal customer profile. This could include blog posts, podcasts, videos, and social media updates. * Optimize Social Media Bios: Craft compelling bios on platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn that clearly summarize your business, the clients you serve, and your areas of expertise. Avoid including private information that could compromise your privacy. * Emphasize Your Expertise: Position yourself as an authority in your field by sharing insights and knowledge that resonate with your target audience. * Control the Narrative: By actively creating and sharing content, you control the narrative surrounding your online presence. This ensures that when people research you, they find information that supports your business goals. The Importance of "Know, Like, and Trust" Remember, people do business with those they know, like, and trust. In the digital age, this means building relationships through your online presence. By providing valuable content and showcasing your expertise, you can establish credibility and build trust with potential clients. Addressing Privacy Concerns Of course, privacy is a valid concern. The key is to be mindful of the information you share online. Avoid posting sensitive personal details on public platforms. Instead, focus on creating content that highlights your professional expertise and business offerings. In Conclusion Instead of fearing online exposure, embrace it as an opportunity to build your business. By strategically cultivating your online persona, you can strike a balance between privacy and visibility, ultimately driving growth and success. Remember, it's not about hiding; it's about highlighting the right information.

The Personal Touch: Research Strategies for Effective Business Communication

In today's fast-paced digital world, it's easy to fall into the trap of treating contacts as mere numbers or email addresses. But behind every phone number and inbox is a real person with unique needs and preferences. That's why injecting a "personal touch" into your business communication is more crucial than ever. I've found that a simple research stack can transform cold outreach into warm, engaging conversations. It's about going beyond the generic and demonstrating that you've taken the time to understand who you're contacting. Why Research Matters Imagine receiving a call from an unknown number. Your immediate reaction might be suspicion or annoyance. But what if the caller addressed you by name and referenced something relevant to your work or interests? Suddenly, the conversation feels less intrusive and more meaningful. This is the power of pre-call and pre-email research. It allows you to: * Personalize your approach: Tailoring your message to the individual's background and needs shows that you value their time and attention. * Build rapport: Establishing a connection based on shared interests or professional affiliations can create a sense of trust and familiarity. * Increase confidence: Knowing more about the person you're contacting can alleviate anxiety and empower you to have more effective conversations. * Improve efficiency: Identifying potential clients or partners who align with your goals saves time and resources. My Simple Research Stack My go-to research stack is surprisingly straightforward: Truecaller: * This app is invaluable for identifying unknown phone numbers. It often reveals the caller's name, which is the first step in humanizing the interaction. Google: * Once I have a name, I plug it into Google. This simple search often yields a wealth of information, including: * Social media profiles (Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram) * Company websites * Online articles or publications * Any other public information. What You Can Uncover By combining Truecaller and Google, you can glean valuable insights into your contacts: * Name and gender: Addressing someone correctly is fundamental to respectful communication. * Location: Knowing their location can provide context and inform your approach. * Occupation: Understanding their profession allows you to tailor your message to their specific needs and interests. * Professional affiliations: Identifying their company or industry can help you find common ground. * Age range: While not always precise, this can provide a general sense of their background and experience. The Psychological Advantage Beyond the practical benefits, pre-call research has a significant psychological impact. It transforms a faceless number into a real person, making it easier to overcome the mental hurdle of initiating contact. Calling a number without any contextual information can be daunting. But with a bit of background knowledge, you'll feel more confident and prepared. Important Considerations Of course, this research stack isn't foolproof. Some individuals maintain a minimal online presence, making it difficult to find information. It is also important to remember to use this information respectfully, and ethically. Despite these limitations, this simple research process can significantly enhance your business communication. It's about demonstrating that you care enough to do your homework and build genuine connections. In Conclusion In a world saturated with impersonal communication, the "personal touch" can make all the difference. By leveraging simple research strategies, you can transform cold outreach into meaningful interactions, build stronger relationships, and ultimately achieve greater success.

Kevin "Lex" Luthringhausen, chief content officer at Tradier Hub, says he has been stubbornly short the stock market expecting a mild pullback that hasn't been coming because the market is "insanely bullish" right now, having pushed stocks, gold and cryptocurrency into record territory. While Luthringhausen is confident that there will be a consolidation, he does not expect "a massive sell-off" until after the presidential election, when he foresees a potential 10 percent correction; in the interim, he is expecting a solid year with slight pullbacks but near constant upward pressure. Dan Omstead, global head of health care investments at Abrdn, says in 'The NAVigator segment' that health care's recent rally from several years of struggle represents the start of a positive trend that has the ability to run from here. Steve Coughran, author of "Reframing Rich: Creating a Better Relationship with Your Money, Yourself, and Others" talks in the Book Interview about getting the right money mindset to achieve and accept financial success, and Clayton LiaBraaten discusses a Truecaller survey showing that one in five Americans was the victim of a telephone scam in 2023, a problem that cost U.S. consumers more $24.5 billion.
