314 - Dr Rob Conenello DO GREAT THINGS

Podiatry Legends Podcast

Dr Rob Conenello has always had the mantra, ‘Do Great Things', and after overcoming Stage 4 Throat Cancer, where he was only given a 20% survival rate, he chose not to let statistics get in the way of his ambitions to live a full life with his young family and to pursue his podiatry career and goals. He has gone on to ‘Do Great Things' himself and encourages others to do the same. Dr Rob Conenello is a sports podiatrist and owner of Orangetown Podiatry, New York. He is the Global Clinical Advisor at Special Olympics International and is a Past President of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine. He is also an Honorary Surgeon for the New York Police Department. In this episode, we discuss: What he has learnt from other podiatrists (Doug Ritchie, Richard Blake, Ivan Bristow, Simon Bartold, Mike Donato, and others). Starting as a volunteer and working his way through the state, national and internal levels of sports medicine. Getting nervous before speaking (even on podcasts). Orthotics is not sports podiatry. Learning from retailers (shoe stores), physical therapists, and athletic events. You can't do everything in podiatry, so instead, focus on what brings you joy and happiness. It's okay to say NO to certain things; one of the first things he said NO to was surgery. Helping athletes reach their goals. There's Riches in Niches. Aim to be the best, and don't set your goal to be average. DO GREAT THINGS. Associating with positive podiatrists and avoiding time with negative ones. Building Relationships = Communication & Trust. Book by Arnold Schwarzenegger - BE USEFUL “There should be a war on average.” - Dr Rob Conenello.  If you have any questions about this episode, you can contact me at tyson@podiatrylegends.com Do You Think Differently to Other Podiatrists?  If you do, I want to let you know you're not alone, and most of my coaching clients feel the same way, which is why they chose to work with me over a larger cookie-cutter coaching company. My coaching clients do not have big egos; they are quiet achievers and like to fly under the radar, but they do want to evolve their podiatry businesses into something special, something they can be proud of and say, “This is mine”. If this sounds like you, we should talk. You can visit my website, www.tysonfranklin.com, for more information or use my ONLINE CALENDAR to schedule a free thirty-minute Zoom meeting.  During our call, I will explain the Thriving Podiatry Business Model, which I've developed over many years. After we talk, I guarantee you will have more clarity on what is best for you and your business.  “I was a frustrated business owner for five years until I started working with Tyson. He helped me transform my business in a matter of months, resulting in an instant increase in revenue and the ability to attract and retain top quality podiatrists. Over the past three and a half years, working with Tyson has changed my life drastically. I was able to take time off to start a family, triple my business revenue, and finally achieve work-life balance. I highly recommend Tyson to anyone who is looking for a business coach.”  – Jessica Haydock (Sole Focus Podiatry, Toowoomba) YouTube Have you checked out my YouTube Channel – TYSON E FRANKLIN?

Simon Bartold from Bartold Clinical has been a speaker, educator and course developer, both live and online, for decades. In today's episode, we dive into the nitty gritty and the sometimes difficulty in creating online courses for the podiatry profession.  It's not always a bed of roses, and not every online or live course is successful. You may think you've created a ball-tearer, but low registration numbers may tell you something else.  On this episode, we also discuss: Current learning trends in the podiatry profession. Everyone learns differently, so course creators have got to adapt their delivery.  The value in focused meetings versus national conferences.   Why some courses can take up to two years to develop.  What roles will AI play in the future?  Why we need to bring fun back into learning.  We would love to hear from you if you have any ideas for an online course. It is our great pleasure to introduce to SHOEphoria two of the most influential members of the footwear design and innovation community.Dave Dombrow and Kevin Fallon are running shoe industry veterans. We have never been certain if this term is complementary or an insult! What we do know is that Dombrow and Fallon have enormous experience under their belts, and both have worked with Nike, Puma and most recently, Under Armour.Dave Dombrow actually began his footwear journey with an internship at Simon Bartold's old alma mater, Salomon. From there he went to Nike, eventually making his way via Puma to Under Armour. There he was responsible for one of the most under rated and innovative footwear ranges of the past 10 years.. Speedform, and specifically the Speedform Apollo.Kevin Fallon meanwhile was on a very similar trajectory, working alongside Dave at Nike and Puma, and also ending up at Under Armour.Kevin's background is in mechanical engineering, but he caught the footwear bug, and has never looked back. Kevin is renowned as an innovator with unique design flair.Whilst working at UA in Portland, Oregon, the home of running footwear, Kevin and Dave had the 'ol corridor conversation.. "hey.. what if..."And from that conversation, the latest running shoe company was born, Speedland, currently specialising in trail running product with the unique SL:PDX.Speedland launched the SL:PDX for pre-order June 15 and delivery Aug. 15, highlighting the equipment moniker because everything about the SL:PDX signifies high-end trail running, culminating with a $375 price point. But it was that “no compromise” approach that meant Speedland placed a focus on ultra-premium materials at every step, not worried about fitting into a mold.Quite a lofty goal!Join us for a truly fascinating chat with these two industry icons, uncovering a few of the inside industry secrets, and culminating with the creation of something very special… Speedland!

On this episode we discuss: The amount of hard work that goes into a membership group. Why Bartold Biomechanics evolved to Bartold Clinical. Delivering quality CPD. The importance of finding your niche. The frustrations with some research that cannot be applied in a clinical situation. Why the only way to know something is to ask the question. Why the educational landscape has changed Covid has taught us what you can now do with virtual education. This style of education is growing because you get more bang for your buck.  Conferences will be smaller and more specific, and people will attend because they are interested in the subject.  "At conferences, speakers should be mentors and should be interacting more with attendees after their presentations". Final Tip You have to be passionate. You need to have a vision if you want to start your own membership group and you’ve got to dedicate time and a lot of effort.  Simon was also on Episode 004: Developing A Career In Footwear & Biomechanics.  If you have any questions about this episode, please reach out to me at tf@tysonfranklin.com. Legend is a word that is often bandied around, and frequently unjustified. That said, our guest on Episode 8 of SHOEphoria pretty much invented this descriptor in relation to running.Amby Burfoot won the Boston Marathon in 1968 at the tender age of 22, and went on to set his best time for the marathon at the famed Fukaoka Marathon in Japan in time of 2:14:28.8Amby did not know at the time, but this was just one second from the American marathon record at the time! He told me he would have gone much harder had he realised!Remarkably, Alby holds another record, that being the running of the Manchester Road Race 57 times in a row besting the streak of barefoot runner, Charlie "Doc" Robbins.Amby Burfoot is a very interesting man, having lived most of his adult life as an ovolacto vegetarian, primarily for ethical reasons (although he does admit that once he had children, he would polish off the odd burger because he could not bear to see food go to waste!)He has had a distinguished career as a Running journalist, bringing a degree of authenticity, honesty and great knowledge to many of the challenges the sport has faced, including footwear.During the great minimalist footwear upheaval of the early 2010’s Amby Burfoot remained a steadfast voice of reason, not for, not against, just reporting the facts.Footwear, running, the Boston bombing, rooming with Bill Rodgers and Jeff Galloway, and why he completely missed the 60’s are all highlights of a memorable SHOEphoria podcast with the inimitable and irrepressible Amby Burfoot!

Or for that matter with Mark Parker and Tom Clarke, both of whom started in the Nike Sports Research Laboratory and rose through the ranks to become CEO’s of the entire shebang! My guest today on Shoephoria episode 6 is considered one of the true legends of the world of footwear and footwear biomechanics and with a career spanning 42 years, there is not a lot he has not seen or done.Dr. Martyn ShortenHe joined Nike the year after a young college basketballer named Michael Jordan was snapped up as an endorsed athlete by the company, a relatively new concept at the time. It is fair to say this turned out to be an Ok investment for Nike!Martyn sharpened his teeth on the very first of the visible air shoes, natural successors to the very first Nike Air running shoe, the Tailwind. After a very successful stint at Nike, eventually as director of the Sport Research Laboratory, Martyn moved to the global body of Puma, to take on the role as Director of Research, Design and Product Development.Martyn is not short of an opinion, however that opinion is invariably followed by hard evidence to back it up.He is scathing of some of the trends that have, and continue to drive the athletic footwear industry, not the least the concept of overpronation, motion control in footwear and analysis of footwear by heel angle. This is a fascinating and at time challenging interview, one of the best, and not to be missed.Such is Martyn’s knowledge, and the depth of his experience, that this is part 1 of a 2 part Shoephoria podcast. Right now we are negotiating many interesting aspects of athlete performance. Not the least of these is performance enhancement, either by drugs, blood doping or even with the new “Super Shoes”.We have seen stunning performances in recent times, with world records falling, and even one of the most enduring and challenging records in athletics, the sub 2 hour marathon, falling. Almost exclusively, the finger has been pointed at the shoes these athletes are wearing, especially in relation to carbon plates, construction and geometry. Are they “EPO for the feet”? Or, are they masking something else? When we see personal best times with elites falling by many minutes, when traditionally improvement is measure in seconds, it may just be that the new shoe technology is providing a smokescreen for something a bit more sinister.Today’s guest on Shoephoria is esteemed sports scientist and sports journalist Alex Hutchinson, and we explore these issues and others in today’s episode.Alex is a fearless reporter on the science behind athletic performance and what it might mean. In this expert edition featuring the team from Bartold Clinical, Simon Bartold and Paul Griffin discuss all things carbon fibre technology in shoes and what the technology means to elite runners and everyday runners. Specifically, on this episode, we'll explore the chronology of the carbon plate innovation in shoes. We explore the mechanisms, the purported mechanisms by which this technology works and you may be very surprised on what Simon and Paul share around the proposed mechanisms. We talk about the role of the plates in the shoes, the role of the foam, the geometry of the shoe, the role of placebo and so much more. We talk about the evidence for and against the effect of these shoes for the running injury profile. We discussed who and how these shoes can be worn, other brands; what they are up to outside of Nike with their own carbon fibre plate technologies. On my Podiatry Legends Podcast, I was joined by Simon Bartold and his story and career were so interesting I thought it had to be shared on It's No Secret with Dr T., it was too good to leave a secret.  Simon Bartold has worked with elite athletes for more than three decades, been to four Olympic Games, lectured in 42 countries, worked with Asics for 20-years and was head hunted by global footwear company Salomon to head up research, design and development of their road running range.  Simon explained that he worked with some of the best sporting clubs and sports practitioners after graduating, and he did this for almost 15 years before he was paid a cent, it was all done for FREE. But as he puts it, you cannot put a price on the experience he gained. "If you want to learn be prepared to do it for nothing, that's just the way it works".  To see full show notes - Click Here If you have any questions about this episode, please send an email to me at tf@tysonfranklin.com, and if you've been enjoying this podcast show, please consider leaving a REVIEW on iTunes.  WORKSHOP - Biomechanics & Business: Profit From A Better Understanding. When you think footwear and biomechanics Simon Bartold's name should immediately spring to mind. He has worked with elite athletes for more than three decades, been to four Olympic Games, lectured in 42 countries, worked with Asics for 20-years and was head hunted by global footwear company Salomon to head up research, design and development of their road running range.  Simon explained that he worked with some of the best sporting clubs and sports practitioners after graduating, and he did this for almost 15 years before he was ever paid a cent, it was all done for FREE. But as he puts it, you cannot put a price on the experience he gained. "If you want to learn and get emersed in something you love, you have to do it for nothing, that's just the way it works".  Opportunities Arose If you're passionate and have a mindset for wanting to learn more doors will open for you. It was through the sporting connections he made that he was offered to be the podiatrist for the Adelaide 36er's.  Once the doors opened more and more, opportunities arose. Not too long afterwards Simon was offered a position with Asics after he became quite vocal about how poorly constructed footy their boots were.  Upskilling If you have an interest in a particular area of podiatry you need to start upskilling in that area and make an effort to learn more than anyone else. Over time your knowledge will become superior to other people, and you will be noticed, and invitations to speak will come your way, opening up even bigger doors internationally.  Staying Motivated Simon has never had a problem getting out of bed on a Monday morning because he loved what he did each day.  "Don't focus on making money, instead focus on being better and the money will come".  If you have any questions about this podcast, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com, or you can contact Simon Bartold through his website Bartold Clinical.  Simon has also teamed up with Ultimate Podiatrist to run a full day event called Athletic Footwear - The Masterclass, being run in March in Melbourne, Perth, Sydney and Adelaide. (No dates set for Brisbane, but if enough people ask Simon to run one he will).  iTunes Reviews If you enjoyed this podcast, it would put a massive smile on my face if you left a review on iTunes, and if never want to miss an episode you may want to subscribe.  If you like this podcast and you're looking for more small business and marketing tips you may also enjoy It's No Secret with Dr T. I know the title of this podcast podiatry legends is a bit odd, but if you look at the word LEGEND, it means an extremely famous or notorious person, especially in a particular field or profession. So I don’t think I have any notorious podiatrists lined up as guests, but I do believe I have a group of podiatry guests that are already doing great things in our profession or will be shining lights in the not too distant future. Goal Of The Podcast So that is the goal of this podcast. I want to shed light all the great things happening in our profession, who is doing them and expose to you some of the fantastic career paths some podiatrists have taken, all over the world, which is why 100% of my guests are qualified Podiatrist. If you’re a podiatry student, or recent graduate and you’re wondering what the podiatry profession has to offer long-term, there is a lot if you want to open your eyes and your minds. If you’ve been in the podiatry profession for some time and your feeling tired, tuning in each week and listening to some of the fantastic stories may be the spark and motivation you need to pivot from your current path and take a different trajectory. What's Coming Up On Future Episodes On the next three episodes, you will hear from Tony Gavin based in the United Kingdom, Peter Wishnie from the United States and Simon Bartold from Australia. Each podiatry guest was selected because I believe they have a unique story to share and have done or are currently doing amazing things in our profession. Openly Sharing Important Information  One key trait I have noticed with all my guests so far is they are the type of podiatrists that love sharing what they have learnt. They don’t want to keep what they’ve discovered to themselves. Openly sharing their knowledge is why I referred to them as podiatry legends because that’s the sort of things legends do even though every guest so far has been quick to point out that they do not feel like legends. However, that’s what a legend would say. This Is Not A Technical Podcast I think it’s important to note this is not a technical podiatry podcast. This podcast is about sharing successful stories, ideas, career paths and upcoming worthwhile events, and along the way, we have a few laughs. Now I’m sure there are plenty of podiatrists who have no idea who I am or where I’m from, so I’m going to give you a brief rundown of where I fit in the profession and if you want to learn more go to my website tysonfranklin.com. Podiatry Scope Is Vast As a profession, I think podiatry offers so much scope, more so than most, and hopefully, after listening to a few of my legendary guests, you’ll be inspired to do more yourself, or at least start considering it. They say the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result, so if you’re not 100% happy with what you’re doing every day; you have the power to change it. It’s not up to anyone else; it’s up to you. It’s just a decision. If you have any questions about this podcast or future podcasts, please send me an email at tf@tysonfranklin.com At the end of each episode, I also plan to have the contact details of each of guest and details of any upcoming workshops and events. Also, if you know of any podiatrists doing amazing things in our profession, please steer them my way and have them email me directly.   And finally, I have set up a Podiatry Legends Facebook page, which is where I’ll be posting each episode and information about upcoming workshops and events being run by myself and my guest.
