Honestly with Bari Weiss

Sometimes we have a guest who needs no introduction. You know Dana Perino. She took on the job of White House press secretary when President George W. Bush was at his most unpopular—back in 2007 and 2008, as the Iraq War dragged on. She did not receive a warm welcome from those covering the White House—outlets like The New Republic called her clueless, and she was even injured after an Iraqi reporter threw his shoes at Bush. It was not an easy job, but, as anyone who served in the press corps back then will tell you, she did it masterfully. Then she went to Fox News, where she quickly became a fixture. Today, she co-hosts America's Newsroom in the morning and also co-hosts the highest-rated show on cable—Fox News' The Five—where she is both the moral arbiter and the straight man. Today on Honestly, Bari asks Dana about the moments of great tumult at Fox News and in news media more broadly. She asks Dana what she makes of Trump's media strategy—including the administration's open mocking of deportees. On top of that, Dana's also pretty well-known for being a mentor, and she has a new book that allows those who don't know her to access her wisdom. It's called I Wish Someone Had Told Me . . . : The Best Advice for Building a Great Career and a Meaningful Life, and it just hit bookstores. It's full of practical advice from Dana and her friends, including many of her news colleagues. Her book covers everything from starting off in the workplace to keeping your career afloat during all the ups and downs that will inevitably come your way. Dana talks about how to stay healthy, keeping yourself financially secure, dealing with bosses and coworkers, handling your personal relationships, and the endless struggle of balancing work and life. From her time at Fox and Republican politics, Dana knows quite a bit about navigating through total chaos and keeping your head above water—you're going to learn a lot from this one. The conversation touches on the Trump administration's stance on federal funding and university independence, featuring insights from Dr. Larry Arn of Hillsdale College. Clay and Buck also address the feedback from parents regarding the inappropriate content in children's books and the arrogance of Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson's comments on school choice. They explore the broader impact of left-wing indoctrination in schools and the importance of conservative values in education. The hosts praise Dolly Parton's Imagination Library for its positive influence on children's reading habits. Dr. Larry Arnn (@hillsdalecollegemichigan) Dr. Larry Arnn from Hillsdale College, discusses the importance of academic independence and the controversy surrounding federal funding for universities like Harvard. Dr. Arnn emphasizes Hillsdale's commitment to not taking federal dollars to maintain educational freedom and criticizes institutions that rely heavily on government funding while engaging in discriminatory practices. The conversation shifts to the cultural shift in higher education, highlighting the growing popularity of Southeastern Conference (SEC) schools and other southern state universities among students from traditionally liberal areas like New York and LA. Clay and Buck discuss how these schools have become desirable due to their stance against anti-Semitic protests and their commitment to academic integrity. Dr. Arnn delves into the intellectual roots of modern progressivism, explaining how historical materialist doctrines have influenced current educational practices and the push for radical changes in family and societal norms. He critiques the lack of objective knowledge in these ideologies and stresses the importance of classical education in understanding and evaluating the world. India and Pakistan The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine and the complexities of the negotiations and the frustrations expressed by President Trump. Clay and Buck analyze the geopolitical implications and the potential for a prolonged conflict, drawing parallels to historical conflicts like the Korean War. The hosts also delve into the tensions between India and Pakistan, exploring the recent terrorist attack in Kashmir and the subsequent actions taken by India, including cutting off water supplies to Pakistan. They discuss the potential for escalation and the broader impact on regional stability. Dana Perino's wisdom An engaging conversation with Dana Perino from Fox News, discussing her new book, "I Wish Someone Had Told Me: The Best Advice for Building a Great Career and a Meaningful Life." The hosts and Dana also touch on the NFL Draft, adding a lighthearted element to the discussion. Dana emphasizes the significance of work-life balance and the value of meaningful personal relationships, recounting her own story of meeting her husband on an airplane. I am so excited to have on Francesca Tarantino she a singer, musician, and actress.  She was born in Pennsylvania & moved to Florida just before her 8th birthday. She has always loved to sing, often belting out classic rock tunes while running around the house or riding in the car.  She got her first taste for performing on stage in second grade, when she closed out her school's talent show with “I Wanna Rock and Roll All Nite” by KISS.  A bit later she moved to Florida & started in a new school that gave her the opportunity to learn about acting, singing, & theatre.  Though a little nervous, with the guidance of her voice teacher, Francesca decided to audition for the lower school's production of Beauty and the Beast and was cast as a “silly girl' and Belle understudy. She continued with musical productions but music called her. Francesca was introduced to the guitar by her father when she was still a toddler.  Her fascination grew and soon she'd have an acoustic and then an electric all her own!  Currently she's learning how to play lead & is practicing some epic riffs.  She's even teaching her dad a few! Francesca has played some local gigs in and around Orlando and has participated in several open mics. & has sung the National Anthem at several sporting events for her school. She covers a wide range of artists such as: The Beatles, Stevie Nicks, KISS, and much more! She is currently writing her own material with DME Orlando. Francesca is eager and hardworking. She has big dreams and is grateful for any opportunity that comes her way. Episode 213 - How To Build a Great Career

Leadership Today Podcast

Summary With so much uncertainty and change it can be difficult to map out your career. However there are still steps we can take to build a great career.   Transcript Hello and welcome to episode 213 of the Leadership Today podcast where each week we share practical tips to improve your leadership. This week we explore how to build a great career. In just a few generations the number of jobs someone is likely to have in their lifetime has increased markedly. Estimates vary, but it's likely a young person commencing their working life today will have around 15 jobs and 3 separate careers. Even across 50 years of working, that's changing jobs about every 3 years. Career planning is becoming more challenging and complex. When it comes to building a great career, you will find many people propose finding work with a combination of: Skills - what you're good at Interests - what you enjoy Opportunities - what the world needs and is willing to pay for The missing factor in this equation is growth - what you can develop. A job without growth opportunities will ultimately cause your career to stall. Life expectancy continues to increase so we will be working longer, which has implications for our training and development. The old model of completing training, then working in a career until your skills are bordering on redundant will no longer work. We have to continue learning, growing and adapting right across our career. But how can you plan for a career when the job you might have in 10 years may not even exist now? Here's how. A great career comes down to your mindset and actions. Despite rapid change and uncertainty, we can adopt a mindset that welcomes change, where we are willing to take calculated risks and learn from mistakes. We can invest in knowing ourselves and regularly improving our capabilities. And we can also build connections with others. So in order to build a great career, I suggest you: Ask “What is a great career… for me?” Your career is a personal expression of who you are and your broader purpose in life. Don't fall into the trap of blindly following others' careers or what your organisation is laying out for you as the accepted pathway. It's very easy to drift without having a clear idea of what a great career means to you. Factor in opportunities to develop, breaks from work for holidays, or whatever else matters to you. Set goals that matter. Approach life in a goal-oriented way. Keep stretching yourself forward towards clear goals. Apply pathways thinking. When the initial path to a goal is blocked, find a different way to achieve that goal. When you hit an obstacle, ask yourself how else you can get to your goal. Celebrate progress. Stop occasionally and reflect on what you can do now that you couldn't do 12 months ago. Don't worry so much about making a career mistake. Even the seemingly poor career decisions we make are opportunities to learn and grow. The biggest mistake I made in my career turned out to also be one of my biggest development opportunities, and a stark reminder of the kind of career I really wanted. Even though it seemed like a career mistake, it actually helped me in my career. Building a great career takes some effort. While we can't necessarily plan every step, there are actions we can take to help build a great career.   Leadership Today On-Demand Special Offer We have a great deal for podcast listeners on our Leadership Today On-Demand subscription. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: I went on a (very) long walk, and it was a great career decision, published by Emily Grundy on November 7, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This year, I walked from Mexico to Canada. I walked over 4,265 kilometres - through snow, blizzards, heatwaves, mosquito swarms, wildfire smoke, and extreme exhaustion. It was the hardest thing I've ever done, and it was the best thing I've ever done. And I almost didn't do it. Why? Not because I doubted I could do it (though I did). Not because I was worried about river crossings and hypothermia and falling trees (though I was). Not because I thought it would break me into pieces (though, believe me, it did). I was hesitant to embark on this epic journey, because I was concerned about what it would do to my career. How it might stall my professional journey. How it might even make it regress. I could not have been more wrong. This post is about why taking a break from your career, to do something that doesn't seem at all related to your career, could be great for it. The current rhetoric, and what's wrong with it Implicit in all the career advice I've consumed is the rhetoric that in order to grow your career, you have to focus on it. 'Focusing on it' involves doing things that directly advance your skills, knowledge, networks, or understanding of what you're a good fit for. According to this advice, your energy should be committed to 'making it happen', and to doing things that are very obviously career-relevant. Want to gain experience? Apply for internships. Want to grow your skills? Commit to self-study. Want to find a job that's a good fit for you? Spend a year exploring different roles. Want to take a break from your job? Wonderful, use that time to consider what you want out of the next one. This advice is pervasive, and it's convincing [1] . It can make people feel anxious that they need to always be 'career-ing', and guilty if they're not. It sends the message that the only way to improve your career trajectory is by very explicitly focusing on it and prioritising it. This rhetoric can become deeply ingrained, especially in young people, and this was the case for me. When I first considered doing the Pacific Crest Trail , I went through quite the internal battle. Was it worth taking six months off work to go for a walk? Would my career stagnate or regress? Was it selfish to prioritise travel over impact, and should I just try to overcome that desire? What damage would this do to the position I'd worked hard to get to? Then, when I decided to actually do the hike, the battle continued. I tried to negotiate with myself, reasoning that if I weaved in some career-focused element then maybe I could justify it. Maybe this would be a good opportunity to think more about my career. Maybe I could use the time to consume relevant podcasts. Maybe I could firm up my stance on issues I care about. In the end, however, I told myself that I didn't want to take six months off work, to then spend the six months thinking about work. So I didn't. I didn't journal about what I wanted out of my career. I didn't listen to any podcasts with the intent of professional development. I hardly even thought about what I was going to do when I got home. I spent maybe a total of six hours thinking about work, and that was just when I sporadically felt like it. I'd come to accept that for six months, I would stop focusing on my career. And that meant, according to what I'd been taught, that I'd be temporarily abandoning it. However, that's not quite what happened. The career-related benefits of a non career-related break Although I'd stopped intentionally working on my career, I would now classify what I did as a career-building activity. I'd go so far as to say that walking the length of the United States was better for my career than the counte...

You can fail in your career, but you haven't failed in life.”Adrian Choo and Sze-Yen Chee Guest profileAdrian Choo is the One and Only Career Strategist in Asia and is the founder of Career Agility International. Sze-Yen Chee is the Executive Director/Co-founder of Career Agility International and is Singapore's top Career Coach. And hence, a career paradox that you cannot achieve happiness through just your career.Breaking out of the career paradoxAdrian and Sze-Yen wrote their book to help people break out of their career paradox. They use their wisdom to help their readers manage the little speed bumps people experience in their career journey. The book will help readers take care of the career path aspects of their life or at least be aware of what they can do to manage their careers better. That gives them a lot more bandwidth, time, and mind space for the things that really matter—including family, hobbies, health, etc.The book gives you clarity and introduces you to new logic and different points of view toward career progression.Your career is not everythingOne of the biggest things that Adrian and Sze-Yen want to dispel is that your career is everything. You're more than your career. You can...
