Welcome to another show about the big toe (hopefully you heard the first presentation, What’s the Big Deal About the Big Toe?) because in this episode, we’re taking it further. You will learn why your big toe is crucial for efficient movement, and how its functionality influences everything from your running stride to balance. I reveal how wearing tight, restrictive shoes can hinder your big toe’s ability to function properly, leading to muscle imbalances, poor glute activation, and even overuse injuries. You will hear about the myths surrounding “over-pronation” and why it’s not the enemy—and why poor big toe function is. I also dive into the science behind conditions like “runner’s hallux” and the role of the big toe in controlling pronation, explain why two-thirds of endurance runners have a dysfunctional big toe, and why barefoot-inspired footwear like Peluvas may be the best path to restoring foot health and strength. This is a great episode to listen to if you want to learn how to improve your big toe health and take your movement and fitness to the next level! TIMESTAMPS: Big toe functionality helps influence and optimize pronation. [00:58] Pronation is the natural inward and downward rotation of the foot and the flattening of the arch during the walking or running stride. [02:02] There has never been any research to reveal that the most high-tech modern running shoes or any running shoe ever invented can actually control pronation. [05:38] How can we get better at pronation? [08:03] Walk around barefoot as much as you can. [12:27] LINKS: Brad Kearns.com B.rad Whey Protein Superfuel - The Best Protein on The Planet! Foot pain is so common these days, it's almost become expected. Unfortunately, "just deal with it" is a terrible idea, as are some of the common "solutions" to foot pain like steroid shots. Overpronation is the result of a process - just like all breakdowns in our bodies. So how do we correct the process so we can impact the condition? Dr. Richard Aplin and his team discuss in this week's episode!

What is pronation? Are you an "overpronator" or an "underpronator"? How does it affect shoe choice? In this episode, Finlay and James try to answer common questions and dispel common misconceptions about foot pronation and biomechanics – looking at the importance of the gait analysis process in finding the right running shoes.Episode info starts at 09:56Key takeaways:Pronation is simply the rolling inwards movement of your foot when it strikes the ground, and your body's natural shock absorption mechanism. Pronation is a normal movement for runners and not something to be feared or demonised. The degree to which you pronate should not be considered as "good", "bad", "normal", or "abnormal". Everyone's feet pronate to a different degree and it's about finding running shoes that provide the right level of cushioning and support for you, and the type of runs you'll be using them for. (16:14)Having the right level of support should improve comfort and lower the chances of overuse injuries. While all neutral running shoes offer some degree of support, stability running shoes feature additional supportive structures that actively reduce greater ranges of pronation and leg rotation. Stability running shoes are not all the same. They are made with different types of added support (typically classic medial post style support, or more holistic guide rail style support) and the type of stability shoes you'll benefit from depends on where in the body/kinetic chain you experience instability - be that in the lower leg/ankles or knees/hips. (26:30).Understanding your natural gait cycle is one factor in shoe selection. Other important factors include the shape of your foot, the type of cushioning experience you want, and the type of runs the shoes are intended for. To provide an example, soft cushioned shoes will feel great at slow to steady paces, but will likely lack the energy return needed to help you run faster. Having different shoes in your rotation to serve the different purposes of your runs is extremely beneficial.Carbon-plated super shoes typically don't feature additional supportive structures (39:05), so if you usually wear stability running shoes, we'd recommend:trying different models to find one that complements your foot shape;going for a training-oriented plated model (such as the Nike Zoom Fly or Saucony Endorphin Speed) before opting for a flat-out racing shoe;and introducing super shoes gradually into your running routine. The level you pronate is unlikely to be the root cause of injury, and nor is the "wrong" shoe. Ensuring you're gradually increasing your training volume/intensity to avoid overloading is a primary factor in injury prevention. My guest on the podcast this week is a coach who takes a holistic view of endurance training and considers himself a problem solver for endurance athletes. Keith Mueller is the founder of Higher Ground Athletics in Boulder, Colorado. His understanding of the details of movement patterns - including pronation and supination - will help you get a better grasp of this essential running mechanism. Keith and I met a few months ago on a group run, and we soon found ourselves deep in discussion about performance and training theory. He has worked with an array of athletes, ranging from weekend warriors to state champion cross-country teams. Keith's view of training is comprehensive, exposing athletes to the gamut of trainable qualities to make them better prepared for all the demands that running places on the body. Our conversation today will help you think differently (and likely in greater depth) than ever before on pronation and supination. We discuss: The relationship between pronation and supination Why flat feet and high arches matter less than you might think The important role of rotation in pronation Your range of motion: use it or lose it Whether barefoot running helps retrain your movement patterns How variety gives your body the ability to improve The importance of moving away from idea of “good” or “bad” movement patterns Keith's ability to communicate complicated concepts make this a podcast that all runners will enjoy and benefit from! Thank you Lagoon! Our newest sponsor is Lagoon, maker of the most comfortable pillow I've ever used. And that's no hyperbole. I'm pleasantly surprised every night I lie down because this pillow is just perfect for me. Since I know that sleep is the #1 recovery tool at my disposal, I'm taking it a lot more seriously. I took their sleep quiz to find the right pillow for my body size and sleeping position at. It only takes 2 minutes and you'll find the type of pillow that will work best for you. I'm using the Fox and absolutely loving it. A big reason why is because it's adjustable. Since you can add or remove fill to get your alignment right, it's a great way to optimize the most important way you can become a better runner that isn't training: sleep. We all know how important sleep is. It's the best recovery tool that you have at your disposal - better than compression, ice, heat, massage, or anything else you can think of. Thank you DrinkLMNT! A big thanks to DrinkLMNT for their support of this episode! They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. They are offering a free gift with your purchase at DrinkLMNT. And this does NOT have to be your first purchase. You'll get a sample pack with every flavor so you can try them all before deciding what you like best. DrinkLMNT's products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. My favorite flavor is watermelon salt, but citrus salt is also a banger. I'm drinking one a day now to help me get enough fluids in our dry Colorado air. It's tasty and delicious and I find that I'm not peeing every 45 minutes throughout the day, which might be an indication I wasn't eating enough sodium. There's now mounting evidence that higher sodium intake levels are not unhealthy – and athletes need substantially more than your typical sedentary person. Of course, ask your doctor if you're worried. But for those athletes running outside in the heat, an electrolyte replacement makes a lot of sense. So check out DrinkLMNT to try their new flavor or get a free sampler pack. Thank You Previnex! After resisting most supplements for the better part of my life, I'm cautiously changing my tune. I'm less than a year from being a Masters runner and in my personal life, I'm optimizing for longevity. In this solo episode of the David Grey Rehab podcast, episode, David addresses the debate of tucking versus untucking the pelvis. He expresses his opinion that, in most cases, he prefers to leave the pelvis along and avoid cueing for tucking or untucking. Specifically he believes that tucking the pelvis is not beneficial in standing up drills such as split squats, hinges, wall acceleration drills, or plyometrics.Instead, he suggests alternative methods to achieve a slight posterior tilt or posterior expansion, such as using a front-loaded position, reaching the arms in front, or maintaining heel pressure. If you're a runner or have foot pain, you may have been told that you over (or under) pronate. And you may have also been sold a highly engineered shoe or arch support to help. And while for some this may resolve the pain, for others, it's just a bandaid. But what exactly do pronation and supination of the foot and ankle even mean? Is it a bad thing? Or totally normal part of movement that we need? Hint: it's the latter In today's episode, we're putting on our Body Detective caps to learn more about pronation and supination, why it's not necessarily a bad thing, and how building foot and lower leg strength will be a more effective (and cheaper) alternative to fancy sneakers. Plus, I'm also sharing the connection between low back pain, pronation and walking - which you'll be pleased to know, is an easier fix than you might think! So whether you have foot pain (or not), flat feet, high arches, or anything in between - today's episode is for you. You'll learn: What pronation and supination of the foot actually means If you need special shoes or arch supports to change it The connection between pronation, walking, and back pain And the best exercises to help you move better and feel better All the links: Supination vs Pronation of the Foot [YouTube] Smart Footwear Insole for Recognition of Foot Pronation and Supination Using Neural Networks (Applied Sciences, 2019) Understanding the foot's functional anatomy in physiological and pathological conditions: the calcaneopedal unit concept (BioMed Research International, 2021) [Foot Posture Index Reference Values among Young Adults in Saudi Arabia and Their Association with Anthropometric Determinants, Balance, Functional Mobility, and Hypermobility](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8019632/#:~:text=Results,in this study (52.9%25).) One time at a medical conference, an expert lecturing on biomechanics said, “When a runner develops Hallux Rigidus, he becomes a swimmer instead of a runner.” Most of the doctors in the audience laughed. I really didn't think that was very funny. I actually have hallux rigidus myself, and it doesn't disrupt my running. It is true Hallux Rigidus can cause pain and swelling in the big toe joint. If you aren't careful the joint can get destroyed. If you understand a little bit about the mechanics of the joint, it may help you understand how to avoid the arthritis that can hamper your ability to run in the future. How can pronation cause hallux rigidus in a runner? Well, that's what we're talking about today on the Doc On The Run podcast.
Roll up your sleeves for this one as we explore the peculiar little joint at the elbow. Or rather the 3 joints that live there. New terms covered this week; Ulnar, radius & humerus. Pronation, supination, olecranon, trochlear, head of the radius & capitulum. Humeroulnar joint, humeroradial joint & the proximal radioulnar joint. Terms that we absolutely didn't squeeze in the end are; medial and lateral collateral ligaments. Annular ligament and the quadrate ligament.
Is Pronation Bad? – The MOVEMENT Movement with Steven Sashen Episode 140 with Rick Merriam Rick Merriam completed a 600-hour Massage Therapy Program at The Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy (CCMT) In 1994.From 2003 to 2009, he worked as an applied biomechanics consultant at ESPN. After a few years of serving as a consultant, his primary role at ESPN was to work with sports- and work-related injuries. He has also served as an applied biomechanics consultant for the fitness staff at Canyon Ranch, The Greenbrier, and ESPN. Listen to this episode of The MOVEMENT Movement with Rick Merriam about if pronation needs to be corrected when running. Here are some of the beneficial topics covered on this week's show: - How people must think beyond their joints and consider how force is being applied to their muscles. - How pronation is actually a part of the gait cycle and not inherently bad. - Why landing on the forefront of your foot makes it difficult for pronation to occur. - Why shoes should be able to twist with your foot movement. - How you can't change what the foot does mechanically without changing what the knee does. Our feet are our foundation; how do you treat yours??This week we're tackling the not-so-sexy subject of feet. We get pedicures; we play footsie; some of us love a good foot massage. But what are our feet telling us? We demand a lot from our feet. They provide us with a mode of transportation, keep us mobile and provide balance. Some of us suffer from foot maladies such as bunions, calluses or hammer toes.In this episode we talk about the importance of caring for your foundation and we give you some tips for caring for your feet beyond a pedicure. We talk about balance (and the importance of the big toe) and we give you tips on footwear and grounding. There are tons of helpful hints in here. We hope you find something useful in this episode. As always, we would really appreciate a review, so that we can share more info with more people! The purpose of this study was to determine if a postoperative decrease in first metatarsal pronation on 3-dimensional imaging was associated with changes in patient-reported outcomes as measured by the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) physical function, pain interference, and pain intensity domains or recurrence rates in patients with hallux valgus (HV) who undergo a first tarsometatarsal fusion (modified Lapidus procedure). In conclusion, detailed review of this limited cohort of patients who underwent a modified Lapidus procedure suggests that the rotational component of the HV deformity may play an important role in outcomes and recurrence rates following the modified Lapidus procedure. Gary Ward is the founder of Anatomy in Motion & specalizes in foot function within the human body.
Pronation is a natural and necessary component of foot function. It describes the composite triplanar motion of the foot as the calcaneus everts, the talus dorsiflexes, and the forefoot abducts. It is how our foot accommodates and conforms to the ground. The reverse of this motion is known as supination. If all that sounds complicated, you’ll definitely want to listen…
https://youtu.be/Tgh6MfxTGeY - FOOT/ANKLE EXERCISE ROUTINE! How shoes impact your ankles/knees/hips/back -Feet are first point of contact with the ground – Will shift you forward (Leaning tower) -Raised heel shoes on flat ground mean we rarely get natural dorsiflexion – stiff ankles -Pronation is a natural thing, when we mess with that we alter the calf, ankle, foot, knee, hip movement. Pronation “Control” alters the foot strike -Thick cushioned shoes allow you to heel strike when running and actually make it harder to run correctly. This engrains very poor movement patterns. -Also, thick bottom cushion shoes increase the likelihood of lateral ankle rolling -Tight shoes prevent the toes from moving well which atrophies muscle and dexterity Choosing shoes based on Comfort/Functionality/Visual appeal - 3 Types of Shoes: Aesthetic – Value based on visual appeal Performance – Value based on improving abilities through technological features Training/Everyday – Value based on maximizing foot/ankle movement (Functionality) 3 Elements of a good Everyday/training shoe 1) Flat 2) Flexible 3) Wide in the Toe Box But what about arch support? Shoes and Casts/Crutches. Insoles and Corsets Should we be barefoot? Talk about transition to more minimal shoes Importance of training foot and ankle strength Hand/Glove analogy. Be barefoot more often Tip Toe walks, Barefoot jogging after practice, Individual toe movements Give yourself months to get used to less restrictive shoes and build movement over time Don't I need different types of shoes for activity? Running shoes? And basketball shoes? And lifting shoes, and hiking shoes, and trail running shoes, and tennis shoes…?? -If shoe technology were really improving you should see a subsequent drop in injury -Marketing pushes you to think about the shoes, not your feet -Just because a shoe is made by an athletic brand does not make it an athletic shoe Consistency between different types of shoes Flip Flops and sandals Boots – High ankles, stiff midsoles High heeled shoes – work and dress up
