Habibi Festival is back for another year at Joe's Pub, bringing Arabs, comrades, and lovers of music together in New York in these difficult times that our nations continue to endure. And for another year, afikra was on stage to speak to the musicians and bring their conversations and performances to you on afikra's Quartertones podcast.Who better to kick off the season with than the one and only Iraqi-Canadian rapper, writer and teacher Narcy who's been – for decades – making music about the atrocities and racism that the Arab region and people have endured. Narcy calls on his friends and peers Hamed Sinno, Nadine El Roubi, Omar Offendum & Niko to join him on stage in an evening filled with poetry, music and solidarity. Narcy shares his journey of grieving the Iraq War and the blessing and importance of community in the ongoing healing process. He also discusses cultural production as a form of resistance, reflecting on when to be silent, when to be loud, and when to amplify one's voice in protest. He and his wife, Sondos, have embodied these principles through Maktaba, their Montreal-based library dedicated to celebrating Arab culture, which he also speaks on.0:00 Narcy Intro Performance10:21 Poetry on Sudan by Nadine El Roubi 13:57 Narcy Invites Niko on Stage to Perform With Him21:36 Who Cares If Kamala's Black?: Narcy & Omar Offendum Perform Together 25:10 Poetry by Hamed Sinno29:36 Narcy Joins Hamed Sinno to Perform a Mashrou' Leila Track & Tribute to Narcy's Brother Nawaf37:41 Mikey Interviews Narcy on Stage Yassin Alsalman, better known by his stage name Narcy (formerly The Narcicyst), is an Iraqi-Canadian rapper, author, university instructor and actor who has shaped the music and culture of the Arab world. Death can come upon anyone at anytime. Though, indeed a saddening event, how we prepare for dying may ease the pangs of it on those closest to us. Nihal spoke with Chaplain Sondos Kholoki about how the Muslim community can better prepare for death communally. She spoke about her experiences working as a hospital chaplain, her experiences helping others grieve their loved ones, and how we can frame death in a way wherein we can realistically prepare for it. As of recent, Chaplain Sondos also published a book titled "Musings of a Muslim Chaplain." Chaplain Sondos Kholaki serves as a hospital staff chaplain and a community chaplain in Southern California. She is board-certified with the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC). Sondos earned a Master of Divinity degree in Islamic Chaplaincy at the Claremont School of Theology/Bayan Islamic Graduate School as the recipient of the Fathi Osman Academic Excellence award and a Bachelor's degree in English and Creative Writing from UCLA, where she received the prestigious Regents Scholar award. Sondos completed five units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) and served as the program's first Muslim chaplain ministering to all faiths but focusing on Muslim patient care. She is the author of "Musings of a Muslim Chaplain" (2020) and a co-editor of the book, "Mantle of Mercy: Islamic Chaplaincy in North America" (fall 2021). Sondos also serves as Vice President of Healthcare for the Association of Muslim Chaplains (AMC).Sondos enjoys sipping a perfectly brewed cup of coffee, listening to Qur'an recitation by Turkish reciters, and singing her heart out at spiritual gatherings. Sondos is married and has two children. -- Faith in Fine Print is brought to you by The Mantle, a sacred safe space dedicated to facilitating and demonstrating Islamic Spirituality. We say that if we knew our expiration dates, we would live life differently. Yet, it's written that tomorrow is not guaranteed and we still go on living our lives no differently. In today's episode, I sit down with Sondos Kholaki, who is a Muslim Chaplain and author, to discuss a topic most of us intentionally avoid and that is Death. But, what if we chose to view death as a gift? What if we realized that there is so much more to learn from loss and grief? In this discussion we come face to face with our own mortality and the art of grieving.Death, loss and grief are some of the things we struggle with navigating. It can be a journey filled with a rollercoaster ride of emotions and one that we may never know how to proceed without a generous amount of caution. We realize that losing a loved one is a reality check that we were never prepared for and grief becomes a part of us, something that we will never be able to escape. It's truly a wake up call when you realize that death is written for every one of us. But why is it that we avoid talking about it? What do we truly fear when it comes to this concept? Is it the fact that we will one day leave our loved ones behind or is it that we fear we are not fulfilling our soul's purpose?I want to thank Chaplain Sondos Kholaki for taking the time to share with us what it means to be a Chaplain and what death has personally taught her. We dive into the process of grieving and the many forms it takes on. This is a discussion that Sondos beautifully leads with compassion and understanding. She teaches us to not fear death but to embrace this reality and to not become overwhelmed when we find ourselves at the intersection of joy and grief, and life and death.I would like to also take a moment to give my condolences to the family of Chaplain Sohaib Sultan, who was Princeton's first Muslim Chaplain and Sondos's first mentor. He is someone who has led a life of inspiration, compassion, kindness and so much more. May Allah grant him the highest of heavens inshallah.Enjoy and follow the pod on Instagram:@unsweetenedandunfilteredFollow Ch. In response to the most oft-requested topic since the pandemic began, on September 25th, 2020, The Women's Mosque of America hosted a wonderful discussion on "Coping with Isolation and the Pandemic" with Muslim mental health experts Dr. Hadia Zarzour, Chaplain Sondos Kholaki, and Zariah Horton on how we can deal with the current global challenges and come out stronger than before inshAllah (God-willing). Together, the panel addressed common misconceptions and taboos surrounding mental health vs. spiritual health, the importance of finding purpose, special tools for children and for Black women during this time, and many helpful, practical tips and resources to make this time a reset rather than a setback.

Welcome to episode 6 of the Universal Rhythm Sessions podcast with DJ Mentor and friends. This week we bring you a dj/producer with original house tracks dating way back to the days of record stores and shopping for vinyl. If you were ever in one of those stores back in the days you were sure to find a gem of his in that sea of vinyl we rummaged through time and time again. With original tracks on Sondos and Subliminal Records this artist is no stranger to the art of creating electronic music and producing hits. Antranig's work has resonated among some of the world's EDM greats like Erick Morillo, Danny Tenaglia, Mark Knight, Fedde Le Grand, Roger Sanchez, Robbie Rivera, Benny Benassi, UMEK, John Aquaviva, Saeed Younan, DJ Vibe, Chus & Ceballos, Satoshi Tomiie and the list goes on. His tracks have been featured on an array of mix compilations for Subliminal Records, Nervous Records, Global Underground, Sondos and more. He has traveled the world shaking dancefloors at Space Ibiza, Pacha Ibiza, Arkadia Miami, Avalon LA, Creamfields UK, Amnesia Paris, Mad Switzerland, Danztoria Barcelona and back home at Pacha NYC, Discotheque, Shelter, The Limelight, Crobar, Centro Fly and the list goes on. He's played alongside heavy hitters Steve Angello, SHM, Fedde Le Grand, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, The Martinez Brothers, Josh Wink, Wally Lopez, Victor Calderone, Tom Stephan, Groove Armada, and Danny Tenaglia.
