Techno has always been about futurism, but in Russell E.L. Butler's hands it becomes a vehicle for a more inclusive, communal and positive now. The Oakland based producer pairs their stripped back and powerful rhythms with uplifting sound design to make for music that is both defiant yet welcoming to all. They have done so on Left Hand Path, Mister Saturday Night Records and Spectral Sound since 2015, with 2018's 'The Home I'd Build For Me And All My Friends' album being a particularly standout work that showcased Butler's mastery of their machines. In the studio, Butler is most at home manipulating modular machines and making propulsive techno, but as a DJ they expire wider sonic terrain. That's demonstrated on this week's mix, which begins with dystopian atmospheres and heavy rhythms that eventually break out into jerking EBM, bleak cold wave and mechanical house sounds. It's a brilliantly taught and tense selection with a careful smattering of human vocals that keeps it rooted in an approachable realism.
This week, we head to South Africa. First up, we hear from King Mutapa, a rising star of the deep house scene whose crunchy samples and dusty drums can be heard on his new release for Minneapolis label Open Sound. After that, we are joined by the one-and-only Portable aka Bodycode. Portable recently released his sixth album on his own KhoiKhoi imprint, which follows a plethora of compelling work for labels like Dial, !K7, and Spectral Sound. It's a deep show. It is still only a couple of years since Moire first emerged, but already he operates in his own distinctive sound world. It is a place his broken house and techno is murky and disorientating, ambiguous and otherworldly. So far it has come on cult labels like Spectral Sound, Ninja Tune and Actress’ Work Discs in the form of some essential EPs and an LP, and now he steps up to our mix series ahead of the arrival of his second full length on Ghostly International. Over the course of an hour the Londoner lays down some loose and hazy house that gets more and more rugged as the grooves unfold. It’s lo-fi but stirringly emotive stuff that ends in a place of refracted melodies and heavenly vocals that really lift you out of the real world.
Notes on Doing's NODcast Episode 047 where Jenna interviews Sam Valenti IV. Sam is the Founder and CEO of Ghostly International – home to the record labels Ghostly and Spectral Sound. Ghostly is the cultural nexus of some of the best music, design, technology, art, clothing, stuff, and good ideas made today. Listen to what Sam had to say about creating work with intention, building communities, operating out of your comfort zone, becoming yourself, and finding meaning. Notes on Doing is a series of conversations with people who love what they do. notesondoing.com

This week we stick with the Gothic metaphors but shift our focus to the vast topic of Sound Art. We draw heavily from works uploaded to the Acousticcameras.org website – a virtual installation by artists who link their sound works to live feed cameras around the globe. Many thanks to the Facebook group: a quiet position - field recording & the act & art of listening for turning us on to the Acoustic Cameras project. Why Kate Simko Took a Break From Techno to Learn Classical Composition She talks new project with the London Electronic Orchestra on a new episode of the Rave Curious podcast. After years of textured electronic production, Kate Simko's shifting gears a bit with her new project, Kate Simko & London Electronic Orchestra. The album sees the Chicago-bred, London-based DJ-producer set aside her synthesizers and compose music for an ensemble of classically trained musicians who turn what might have been techno compositions into something entirely new. And while lots of electronic producers try their hand at other genres—rock, jazz, etc.—few have the qualifications of Simko, who took an extended break from her successful career releasing dancefloor fillers for labels like Spectral Sound, Leftroom, and Get No.19 Music to studio classical composition at the esteemed London's Royal Music College. "I was at DC10, and I realized it wasn't my dream," Simko tells Rave Curious of her decision to pump the brakes on a prosperous DJ career and delve into the world of classical music. The result is both an exciting new record and a reinvigorated love of dance music. Hear her inspiring story on this episode of the Rave Curious Podcast.
We are extremely excited to welcome this man to the show! With releases on Perlon, Karat Records, Spectral Sound, Süd Electronic and upcoming on Rhythm Cult, Portable has appeared on a string of highly credible imprints. Spending his early years in Cape Town, he moved to London, followed by Lisbon, before finally settling in Berlin. He has also reated his Bodycode alias - somewhere between the beats for the body and melody for the soul - layering tech-funk with wisps of melody, heady effects, and a liberal wash of otherworldly vocal samples. His alter-ego maybe? Enjoy this exclusive recording of his live set at Live At Robert Johnson. Brilliant!
Michael Greene is Fort Romeau, an accomplished producer of smooth and sumptuous, or more groove driven and kraut influenced, house music. It has come in the form of many compelling EPs and LPs and on labels like Spectral Sound, Live At Robert Johnson and 100% Silk and takes cues from Italo and New Wave amongst other things. An intriguing producer who is genuinely bringing something new and fresh to the decades old house sound, he is a welcome addition to our series. The mix we have on offer from Fort Romeau is one recorded at a recent gig at Corsica Studios in London that found him playing all night long. It was a real opportunity for the man to go deep, serve up curveballs and indulge many musical passions in one long session. “I really like playing in this way,” he says. “There’s so much freedom to shape the entire musical language of the evening and to make connections between disparate musics that you just can’t really do in two or three hours at peak time. Corsica is one of London’s best spaces in my opinion, the DJ booth is rock solid with none of the typical problems of playing vinyl that plague clubs these days, the sound system is good and the crowd has always been great in my experience, so i was pleased to be able to take over the programming for the night.” The near six hour selection touches on ambient as well as various different strain of techno and house from across the ages. All knitted together into a perfectly balanced and well paced mix that keeps a vibe alive throughout, it is a fine testament of his skill in the booth as well as a nice little peak into the influences and inspirations that inform his productions.

We're back! After a short break we have decided to treat you to a new full-length live turntable mix. Hopefully it's been worth the wait because the latest chapter in our 4/4 adventure features some very tasty up-front material. We've moved away slightly from the Ed Banger/Kitsune sound this time as every other fucker seems to be caning it at the moment. Instead we've focussed on some solid UK Fidget-House cuts (Switch, Jesse Rose, Trevor Loveys & Herve are all here) as well as a couple of Funky Techno bombs in the shape of Detroit's Matthew Dear aka Audion & the UK's Dave Clarke. Elsewhere, there are great Re-Rubs of Robbie Williams & JT courtesy of the ever consistant Switch & Riton, whilst Brooklyn's In Flagranti help fill the Disco quota. Also look out for the first-outing of a couple of James' own Re-Edits, and don't overlook the last couple of comedown numbers. Cheers to Simon & Jo for the Polysics Re-Rub.
