Born in New York, some of his earliest musical influences included his mother's love for soca music and the distinct Caribbean rhythms of his culture. An appreciation of Jazz would be further guided by his father's expanding audiophile home system. Moving to Detroit in 1980, the start of the decade where Techno would take formation, put him at the center of music history while simultaneously working at the now famed nightclub “The Music Institute”Relocating to Atlanta to attend Morehouse College, he took it upon himself to bring more of the authentic House and Techno flavor to his new home, playing at numerous clubs and bars in the metro area. Eventually this led to DEEP, his aptly-named, game changing decade long Saturday night residency at local club MJQ, where he would bring guests such as King Britt, Steve “Silk” Hurley, Peven Everett, Kerri Chandler, Phil Asher and Joe Claussell. It is during the 2000s that Kai really sets his stride. 2002 saw the release of his first production, ‘The Kaizer EP', on Brett Dancer's seminal deep house label Track Mode. After a few releases on other labels such as Moodymann's Mahogani Music, Deep Explorer & Real Soon. A few years later he would co-found the Labor Day weekend outdoor event House In The Park with DJ Ramon Rawsoul which now has over 15,000 attendees.2008 saw the creation of his label NDATL and the first edition of his annual Deep Detroit. NDATL stands for the cities that have played a role in his musical development: New York, Detroit, ATLanta. Which is home to many of his own productions and A List producers such as Larry Heard, Mr. G, Theo Parrish & Mike Huckaby to name a few.e has recently curated the boutique Kai Alcé Eyewear line. “The Kaizer” never stops moving. A love of life, mixed with his flair for originality, willingness to experiment and devotion to the dancefloor has cemented his place as a pillar in American dance music history. Whatever comes next from Mr. Alcé, you can be assured that it will be classy, soulful, fulfilling and funky. www.ndatl.comRecorded on April 7, 2025 in Brooklyn, NY.

The first thing you might realise during a MUSCLECARS set is the sheer musicality of the duo's selections. Vocals glimmer at the centre, unfolding into enchanting, soulful coos, while drums strike captivating rhythms and gilded synths reach towards the sky. It's a jazzy New York house sound mythologised by pioneers like Joe Claussell, Carlos Sanchez and Timmy Regisford (whose songs all make it to this RA Podcast). For years, New York natives Brandon Weems and Craig Handfield have run their Coloring Lessons party as a way to introduce a younger generation to this vital piece of dance music history. In a city that prides itself on fast walking, fast talking and, as of late, fast BPMs, their music is an invitation to ease into a more relaxing pace. This RA Podcast comes at a golden time for MUSCLECARS. In May, they released their RA-recommended debut album, Sugar Honey Iced Tea!, whose sultry (and undeniably catchy) lead single "Tonight" has gotten the stamp of approval, and a remix, from New York legend Louie Vega. And this Sunday, they hosted their annual Juneteenth block party outside the Lot Radio, where scores of Black dancers latched onto one another during sets from a multigenerational crew of Black DJs including Ron Trent, Lovie, Shawn Dub and MUSCLECARS themselves. This two-hour-plus mix takes us through the spiralling jazz of Herbie Hancock, the flashy disco of The Originals and lands us, finally, in "Water," the track that also closes out Sugar Honey Iced Tea!. @musclecarsnyc Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/941
Young partygoers might know Man Power, AKA Geoff Kirkwood, as the earnest geezer going back-to-back with DJs like Ewan McVicar, Paul Woolford, La La and Skream—peak-time specialists with a fine line in boofy bangers and ravey techno. Kirkwood is also a dab hand at the kind of elliptical house and deep cut detours favored by '00s labels like DFA and Optimo. In spite of a long track record as a producer and promoter, if you had to boil Kirkwood's work in recent years down to a single quality, it might be altruism. He hails from North Shields, a small town fringing the boundary of Newcastle in England's oft-neglected North East, and wears his heritage proudly. The Me Me Me label boss's involvement in a flurry of civic restoration, and no-filter paeans to the importance of working class involvement in culture, have become as central to his life as music-making itself. For an accomplished DJ who has played at nearly every good club you could name, that's no small feat. So which side of Man Power were we in for? The answer on RA.940 is: both. '60s free verse poetry, Zebra Katz, Gesaffelstein and John Carpenter in the opening stretch? Makes sense. Octave One punching through Rozalla? You got it. An extended Joe Claussell workout atop Radiohead's "Everything In Its Right Place"? Why not. In Kirkwood's hands, it all goes down as smooth as a pint of Newcastle Brown. @manpower-1 Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/940

Coflo brings a true dancer's touch to house music. As a life long student of the American style of house dance and the Afro-Brazilian martial art Capoeira; Coflo looks to infuse his dance and movement experience into his musical productions. A true house head; he hopes to honor the beautiful culture and community that raised him in his home of the Bay Area in California, USA. In 2018 Coflo joined the American house music beacon Ocha Records as head of A&R and Label Manager for artist and owner Carlos “Casamena” Mena. It was at this time Coflo also began releasing as a staple artist on the Ocha talent roster. Originals and remixes spread quickly through DJs and collectors internationally with his breakout single “Stress Relief (Don't fuck with me right now)” remixed by house music legend Osunlade. Coflo's musical ideas caught the ears of Osunlade; bringing him to Yoruba Records initially as a remix artist and mastering engineer. In 2021, Coflo joined the official artist ranks on Yoruba Records with his debut collaboration “Soul 2 Souls” with SACRED H3ART. 2022 for Coflo was all about "Peanut Butter Lover," a track that stuck in clubs like, you guessed it, peanut butter! It's Coflo's signature: fun and honest in club music with an irresistible groove, earning love from DJ legends like Anané, Osunlade, and Louie Vega.Coflo's 2023 has been epic, remixing Ron Trent's "Black Magic Woman" for the fresh label "Sacred Medicine” crafted by the American house music pioneers Joe Claussell and Ron Trent. With a decade of hits across famous labels like T's Box, Local Talk and Atjazz Record Company, he's not just a studio wizard; he's a DJ booth hero, known for his energetic beats and eclectic style. Coflo hopes to continue to bring a unique view from a dancer's perspective to house music. Focusing on crafting something new and evolving with each passing release. Sometimes I enjoy pulling up an old set from this podcast and taking my own journey back in time. It stirs up all sorts of memories and feelings. My technical skills have evolved so much, particularly in mastering tracks for audio quality. I'm not a professional in this area but I've learned a lot. So, I decided to pull all the tracks from a classic house set I did in 2017, “Just Give Me One Night.” I remastered and reworked each track individually and then re-recorded the set live. I am super stoked about the result. Enjoy some classic throwdown House. 1. Joe Claussell and Jerome Syndenham - Rhythm (Original Mix) 2. Soul Buddha - End of My Dayz - Deep Down Dub 3. TRUE HOUSE STORIES WITH LOUIE VEGA (MASTERS AT WORK)INTERVIEW BY LENNY FONTANA PODCAST 022 (PART 2) A leader in global dance music, Louie Vega has painted an award-winning career from a palette mixed with everything from house, salsa and afro-beat, to jazz, hip hop, gospel and soul. New Masters At Work Remixes for Dua Lipa (Via The Black Madonna's Mix Tape), DJ Krust (on Crosstown Rebels), and new productions for the Maw Imprint by The Masters At Work. Louie Vega has also teamed with The Martinez Brothers for a second single entitled “Let It Go” with Marc Bassy released July 10, 2020 on the titan record label Defected. Hello and welcome to the 67th Episode of Soulfrica Vibecast entitled "Tribal Essence". With the fires burning across the world, and as the smoke clears, change is coming through. So-many lives have been silenced, so-many families have been affected from the murders and wrongful deaths and our screams and protest yell for "I Can't Breath" and 'No Justice no Peace". Black music is the very foundation of all music! It is intertwined and embedded in us all, it calls for us through spirit and ancestral dance. As we unify in the streets we lock arm to arm in our dance of life and freedom! The "Tribal Essence" is an awakening, a dance of the peoples of all tribes in unity as ONE! New Music & Exclusives By: Osunlade, Ocha Records, Christos Fourkis, Mr. Raoul K, Dany Cohiba, Joe Claussell, Coflo, Saint Evo, Toshi, Manoo, Be.Lunuit, Tomahawk Bang, Tall Black Guy, Trinidadian Deep and Re-Edits by yours truly! Thank you all for your support! Please stay safe and remember #blacklivesmatter

The deep house music show kept things jazzy and organic for the first hour, then we take a deep dive to the stratosphere with some atmospheric deepness by tracks from every part of the world. I've gained a lot of Fiber Art followers and had to give them a couple big shout outs. The 2hr session keeps pumping along with music by Fish Go Deep, Local Options, Distant People, Josh Milan, Christos Fourkis, Bekzin Terris, Joe Claussell, Calypso De Sir, Antonio Ocasio, DJ Gregory, Josh Wink, Ursula Rucker, Louie Vega, and more!! SFH is now on Instagram! (@sundaysfromharlem) Dont miss the show each Sunday, exclusively on www.IbizaLiveRadio.com
The deep house music show from NYC changed things up this week with no talking on the mic about Artist info and ID of the songs. Sometimes I put together a session which flows so effortlessly, that I feel talking over the music interrupts the journey we are taking together. We start with a super chill and a beautifully produced vocal track by Bonetti. From there, the show steadily increases its energy for the next 2hrs. Typically, there are peaks and valleys of energy within my sessions. But, this one doesnt. Its just a steady rise in energy for 2hrs with music from Doug Gomez, South Street Player, Soledrifter, Glenn Underground, Colette and Pete Moss, Heather Johnson, Shawn Christopher, Dj Spen, MKL vs Soy Sos, Heather Johnson, Ursula Rucker, Lesney Deep, and ending with a classic collab between Joe Claussell and Jerome Singingham on Beth Orton's song, "Central Reservation" Tune in each Sunday to hear the show on www.IbizaLiveRadio.com and 103.7fm. in Ibiza ::::Playlist:::: 01) My Everything-Bonetti 02) Moon Dance-Delano Smith 03) [Who?] Keeps Changing Your Mind-South Street Player 04) Vibe All Night (Soledrifter Remix)-Karl Sierra, Soledrifter 05) Sun Rise (Atjazz Remix)-Dominique Fils-Aimé 06) Hard Tymes-Glenn Underground 07) Choose Wisely (Doug Gomez Barrio Remix)-Needle 08) Dreams (Pete Moss Remix)-Colette 09) Hope (MKL vs Soy Sos)-Fat Freddys Drop 10) Home-(Home (TOL Vocal)-Heather Johnson 11) Like A Feather (Chris Forman's Deeper Vision Mix)-Ursula Rucker 12) You Can Make It (Alaiai & Gallo Extended Preacher Dub)-Shawn Christopher 13) Jungle Deep (DJ Spen’s Volume Pumped Remix)-Scoob & Freez 14) Amore-James Bradshaw, Andy Reid 15) Love Question (Original Mix)-Nautica (UK) 16) Brighter Days (Angelo Ferreri Remix)-Dajae 17) Better Dayz (Original)-Lesney Deep 18) La Noche (Harry Romero Extended Remix)-Frank Nitty, J8Man 19) Reel Deep (Original Mix)-Sue Avenue, DJ Romain 20) Central Reservation (Spiritual Life/ Ibadan Remix)-Beth Orton

Italy's I-Robots is one of the most prolific re-editers in the game, putting out a slew of official reworks via his Opilec Music label. With his DJ career stretching back to the early '80s and with a sideline as a second-hand record dealer, his knowledge is impeccable. Uncovering rarities and forgotten gems, he manipulates tracks in both classic chop 'n' splice edit style and also in more complex arrangements. This mix is a journey through his edit suite. *How would you describe your sound?*"Nomad Sound" for sure... Filsonik has a history deeply rooted in the iconic world of New York club music and evolved as a DJ / producer out of a rich NYC house community. Born and raised in the Lower East Side, he grew up on hip hop, latin disco, and reggae music. He was schooled from age seven as a classical pianist and as such his influences are both street and formal. His childhood neighbors were John Mateo and Eddie Matos, producers on one of the UK’s foremost deep house labels Glasgow Underground and Joe Claussell’s Spiritual Life Music. His first experience of house music was with them in the early 90’s when they asked him to play sessions keys on one of their early tracks. His career as a producer and DJ took off in 2006 under the umbrella of New York’s veteran house DJ, Timmy Regisford of Club Shelter, a legendary weekly soulful / deep house event that ran for fifteen years. Filsonik’s signature drum programming sound which is quintessentially Latin, rhythmic but yet low-fi appears on many Regisford tracks of that period. Co-productions on Shelter’s label Unrestricted Tracks and Restricted Tracks with Regisford including “Can U” (Unrestricted Access Records), “Basic Track” (Restricted Access Records) and “Movement” (Restricted Tracks Records) set the bar for gritty, underground New York deep house of the mid 2000’s. His remix of Alicia Key’s “POW” (Restricted Access Records) crystalized the sound of New York vocal house circa the mid 2000’s. He also saw the fruits of his labor appear on Osunlade’s Yoruba Records with Nadirah Shakoor “Love Song Part One” (Bahsonik Remix) (Yoruba Records) which was a collaborative effort with the English jazzy house producer Bah Samba. In 2009 Argy signed the track “Diva Jaguar” for his Berlin based label These Days label and re-released the by now NYC deep house classic “Can U” as a special Argy edit. Shortly thereafter, Argy picked up a second release from Filsonik which landed on his “These Beats” compilation featuring original productions by the likes of Radio Slave and Jerome Sydenham. As a DJ, his warmups for Regisford’s mammoth 12 hour after hours sets at the club established his name within the international house community as one of the key players in the New York house scene. In 2006 he joined Dennis Ferrer’s Objektivity crew for a momentous day at New York’s MOMA PS1 series, an outdoors event widely captured on You Tube that also helped launch the careers of his close friends The Martinez Brothers. He has since participated in many Objektivity events as the official opener of the night. Circo Loco, DC10, Ibiza 2011 marked a strong comeback for New York’s Filsonik after a few quiet years spent in the environs of his home town. As a close artistic collaborator of fellow NYC Puerto Rican artists, The Martinez Brothers, he spent three months filming and traveling with the boys throughout Europe in the summer of that year. Along with The Martinez Brothers, Filsonik played two times at Circo Loco at DC10 in summer 2011 and went on to do a 2012 residency in Ibiza with additional appearances at their worldwide events. 2014 was a big year for Filsonik with releases on Jamie Jones’ Hot Creations Label with “Dogfish” as well as the summer Ibiza anthem Larosa “Something Strange” (Filsonik Remix) (Not Bad). He has tracks slated for release on both Tuskegee and Cuttin’ Headz. Filsonik is currently building the catalogue of his own label Gran Manzana with his close friend Patrick Grooves. He plays frequently alone and with The Martinez Brothers at venues and events such as BPM Festival (Mexico), Space, Miami (USA), Output, New York (USA), ReSolute, New York (USA), Spy Bar (Chicago), Stereo, Montreal (Canada), Showcase (Paris), The Arches (Glasgow), Circo Loco (Ibiza). Filsonik sums up what house music means to him in just one word ‘DANCE’ music Asking Filsonik what the House Gangster movement means to him; “The HG movement is completely refreshing deeply rooted in my opinion from the north part of the world and has been felt worldwide. The movement has been organic and special to see the succession and growth of it and now being a part of it just makes it that much more epic to see its development.” Filsonik describes the House Gangster sound as “in simple terms to me is like a great plate of sneak's food delicious..The main course is raw and dirty with a side of sexiness.” We asked Filsonik to tell us how this mix represents him as an artist, to which he replied; “This mix represents a nice variety of my favorite artists who I'm currently supporting there sound.” Finally he gives us a little special mention about this mix; “There's a few special pieces in the mix to look out for like for example look out for some new heat from my boys Harvard Bass, Bas Ibelini,Jesse Callosso to say the least got some Bomba's coming out this Summer of 2015.”
It's probably just as well that when I received the audio file of this week's show the bit at the beginning about having a cup of medicinal mushrooms to drink (chaga), was missing. Of course this was a source of much hilarity to Ross Allen, and nuff jokes abounded in the studio about Cosmic Jam/mushrooms/magic/hippies, which begs the question, am I? A hippy, that is... well I do drink medicinal mushrooms, am more or less vegan, love a bit of yoga/chi gong/meditation, however I don't wear tie-dye, smoke weed, or say "cosmic" much except in the context of the show. Hippies, if such a concept or subcultural group makes any sense in this day and age doubtless do come in many guises, and who's to say what kind of music they should like? In my experience a lot of those who ostensibly advocate the modern version of the "hippy" credo have pretty awful taste in music...psi-trance? Dodgy ambience with clichéd beats? It may be "cosmic", but it also lacks the soul and expansiveness that I search for in life and music. So what do I mean by cosmic? I've always thought of it as referencing Clinton's "Cosmic Slop"and the whole sic-fi, space obsessed vein that runs through music from Sun Ra to Earth Wind And Fire etc, that and the idea that the radio/airwaves/ether is a much more metaphysical space than the dance-floor, a space where music should necessarily and logically be more expansive. However my tastes also have a more terrestrial bent, I don't just spiral off into galactic reveries, at least not all the time! I very much doubt that I'm the best judge of my radio shows, after all they're not really for me. Having said that if I'm not pleasing myself the whole thing would be a fairly pointless exercise, after all the time that I've been in the game, I'd like to declare that I'm not really "in the game"; I'm just doing my thing, and I hope in doing so it reaches a few sympathetic ears and touches the odd soul. All I can say is that for whatever reasons, this particular Cosmic Jam pleased me more than most, maybe it's the balance of the tunes, the way I felt, the fact that I'd noticed the first stirrings of Spring that day, who knows? What I do know is that it kicks off with a cosmic nugget from Joe Claussell and Stefan Prescott's Spiritual Life which was undoubtedly one of my favourite labels during a period when I took much more interest in house music than I dip these days. The "Kuniyuki" remix of Slam Mode's "Pacifica" is certainly something of latter day hippy anthem, suitably expansive and a nice way to set up the show. Staying with newness for the first sequence there's more from The Rebirth, Rhonda Thomas, Native Dancer, and Ben Cox Band, all providing reasons to be cheerful and optimistic about the state of new music. Which is not something I'm feeling when I try to get with the latest crop electronic artists, but it's not for me to shout "emperor's new clothes".... The point I was trying to make about Mark Murphy's interpretation of Michel Colombier and Paul Williams "We Could Be Flying", (Williams also penned the words to We've Only Just Begun, so one might surmise he was something of an optimist!). The tune, which I've always loved, can certainly sound bombastic in the wrong hands, but Murphy brings such fluidity and looseness to proceedings he avoids those traps, and by underplaying the message he possibly nails the quintessential version. Another vocal gem follows, the album produced by (Jamaican born) Esmond Edwards, a man whose career is not often celebrated but whose credentials would rank him way up there amongst the greatest, is by Gloria Lynne, a vocalist who's career again had an enormous span and range, this version of "Out Of This World" is funky, fun, soulful and impeccably arranged. Following glorious Gloria, more lush female vocals from Flora Purim who at this time in the mid eighties was sounding beyond wonderful, her innate Brazilian swing and sweetness embellished by a seasoned huskiness. "Jogral" was written by the incredible José Neto, a Hendrix-like guitar genius who featured heavily in Airto and Flora's bands around this period. I saw Neto perform alongside Airto and Flora with the band Fourth World several times, and his playing never ceased to amaze and inspire. Grupo Afro Cuba Havana, a progressive Cuban outfit licenced to a European label, come with the fusion tinged but authentically lovely "Maria", Kahil El Zabaar I say plenty about on the show, and the Bill English tune "7th Ave Bill" is the kind of Jazz that needs little in the way of explanation, proper. The second hour kicks off with the Detroit Escalator Company's "Twilight Finding", a collaboration between DEC's Neil Ollivierra and Ayro, which may have been DEC's last release (2006), which is sad because Neil Ollivierra made some sumptuously gorgeous music under the DEC moniker. Matthew Halsall never fails to establish a great atmosphere on his recordings, they are conceptually almost flawless, and his treatment of Alice Coltrane's "Journey In Satchidananda" weighs in with the acoustic bass wringing every last drop of heaviness from that timeless line, and follows through with some beautiful flute work, and trumpet from the man himself. Independent and beautifully odd jazz follows in the shape of Jerry Granelli's "Aslan", bass-line heavy once again, as is Lani Hall's version of Lesley Duncan's "Love Song". Keeping the bass but getting supremely analogue synth (you don't get any better than T.O.N.T.O) Malcolm Cecil produced some of Gil Scott Heron's best work bringing his brand of sonic expertise into play, and the combination of that mellifluous synth bass and Gil's redoubtably upbeat "Better Days Ahead" is truly lovely. Last half hour veers between Latin tinged soulfulness and plain funkiness, the rare, the overlooked, the new and old all forming a fitting finale to a show which floated my boat. I hope it doesn't sink yours!! Peace, love, and medicinal mushrooms.. P.x 1. Slam Mode - Pacifica (Kuniyuki Takahashi remix) 2. Native Dancer - Until Frida Speaks 3. Rhonda Thomas - Oh Yay 4. We have a musical journey for all you lovers out there. The third chapter of our Heartcast series is from Manchester and Mallorca legend, Andy Proctor aka Stretford Dogs Club. Behind some of the UKs best underground club nights like Manchester’s stalwart Deep House night Development & the ever so unique I AM parties in Manchester & Liverpool. A list of DJs that have played with Andy reads like a who’s who of House & Techno, Body & Soul masters Francois K, Danny Krivit and Joe Claussell. US pioneers like MAW’s Kenny Dope Gonzalez, Theo Parrish, DJ Spinna, Ron Trent & Glenn Underground. Techno legends like Deetron, Rolando & Stacey Pullen and right through to German masters like Alexander Barck ( Jazzanova ) , Ame and Dixon. “Stretford Dogs Club” , a tongue in cheek DJ pseudonym and started to produce online mixes via Soundcloud that quickly took up popularity all around the world, with listeners regularly tuning in from Brazil to Japan. He started a project to create a 24 hour mix across the year entitled “A Day in a Dogs Life” which gained recognition and his reputation and popularity grew to epic levels. Playing in places like South Africa and Russia have ensured that the sky is the limit for this dog lover from Manchester. Sit back and relax and enjoy this 4 hour special. We can assure you that you wont be disappointed. Soundcloud - https://soundcloud.com/stretford-dogs-club
Done sometime in the mid-2000s for the Museum of African Art in New York City. http://www.africanart.org/exhibitions/ Joe Claussell, Manu Dibango, Fela Kuti, Masters at Work, Olutunji, & more. I don't have the event art work but there's an image for you. My press credential from a 1993 trip to Libreville, Gabon in Africa where I went to report on a summit that was organized by Philadelphia's Rev Leon Sullivan and was well attended by many African-American civil rights luminaries including Coretta Scott King, Jesse Jackson, Cicely Tyson, & Dick Gregory. Thanks to Philadelphia radio station WDAS and their then head of the news department, E. Steven Collins, for that experience. I had a simple quiet and unforgettable moment in an elevator there with Coretta Scott King...kinda divine Loosely related but I hope a good story for you. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leon_Sullivan#Leon_H._Sullivan_Summit
Fresh off a weekend of playing with Mr. Joe Claussell at the LA Monthly "Spirit" I had the opportunity while in LA to get on the decks and record. Props to DJ Kerry for the OG Diesel and the space to take flight. I hope you'll enjoy... ---|dG |
