The final installment of my Essential Label Series features the mighty Perlon. Consistently named one of the best electronic labels in the world, Perlon is a powerhouse of deep and unique house and minimal techno. All the greats have appeared on this label from Villalobos to Dygas, to Moonear and Baby Ford; it truly is an honor to own all these records. This is my 3rd all-vinyl mix for the show, and something I would expect more of as I head into my third year at DT Radio. Thank you for tuning in. Enjoy! ⚡️Like the Show? Latvian duo Taran & Lomov present 'Semper Supra' – their debut LP on their own label Amber Muse; a refined and accomplish long player that showcases the tip of an iceberg patiently built across two dedicated and long-spanning careers in the music industry. Together, the pair have managed to earn the coveted stripes of 'jack of many, master of many' across a fruitful and symbiotic 20 years. They've turned their hands to promotion, production, remixing, radio hosting, music journalism and DJing. At this point, they have a gilded resume that includes support for their releases from the likes of Jane Fitz and Laurent Garnier, releases on W&O Street Tracks, Josh Wink's Ovum Recordings and Dense & Pika's Kneaded Pains as Queer On Acid and of course – their basecamp – the Amber Muse Radio show. Musically, 'Semper Supra' is a genre-flexing trip with its roots in early 2000s Minimal and late 90s Electronica. 9 tracks bearing flecks of influence from labels like Time Passages, Perlon and Warp as well as artists such as Black Dog, Metamatics, Binh and Jan Jelenik meld in a head-twisting brew - one that caters to listeners on any point in the spectrum between after-hours raver to armchair astronaut. The glue in the record is the subtly haunting energy omitted by the synths, sweeps and atmospherics that course through the album. The spectral glow these conjure hangs gently over a variety of bpms and intensities, keepings things suffused in a dubby fog that gives a living, breathing sense of space and atmosphere. Case and point being 'Nano Crab' - a patient, frosty recording that stacks energy in subtly folding layers of mangled, otherworldly signals and primal rhythms. 'Slow East' follows up with a skeletal Electro track that oozes with an ominous mood often clocked in Nicolas Lutz's extended sets. The warped robotics and cold sonics of 'Slickers' are given life and mobility via groove and clever sequencing while 'Corp' whips up into a more frenzied zone. Alarm tones burnt and bit crushed while drums move with the sort of urgency required for boiling point dance floors before the title track provides an allaying landing pad as it scatters pin-prick melodies across a wide, icy soundscape. ambermuse.com/taran-lomov-bio facebook.com/TaranLomov ra.co/dj/taranlomov soundcloud.com/ambermuse facebook.com/AmberMuseRec instagram.com/ambermuserec

The doyenne of minimal reflects on Perlon, forgotten classics and the tracks that never leave her record bag in this live edition of Playing Favourites at Dimensions Festival. Following the minimal boom of the '00s and early '10s, the sound has in more recent years flourished quietly in the smaller corners of certain scenes. It certainly, as some people like to claim, never died. In fact, if you were to discuss this with Sonja Moonear, the Swiss DJ would argue that the genre is as popular as ever. Much like the other artists in the upper echelons of the scene—Zip, Raresh, Nicolas Lutz—Moonear made a name for herself by DJing rather than making music. She cut her teeth in Geneva as a resident at its key club at the time, Weetamix. Perlon label head Zip was a regular guest and, as Moonear recounts, he invited her to play in Berlin after she warmed up for him a few times. Moonear is now an in-demand DJ in her own right, with a style that takes in a broad cross-section of house, techno and minimal. Recorded at last summer's Dimensions Festival, this edition of Playing Favourites sees Moonear select some of her favourite '90s and early '00s minimal classics and the records that never leave her record bag. She's truly obsessed with music and finding rare grooves, and her enthusiasm shines through. In between playing tracks, she talks about the squat scene in Geneva and how she spends hours preparing her bag every week. She reminisces about the first time she put her hand on a turntable; her transition away from the piano as an adolescent; and her primary goal in her career, which is "purely to enjoy herself." @moonear ra.co/exchange/794

The longtime Perlon affiliate goes for big basslines and big grooves. It's 1996, and a young Fumiya Tanaka is shelling out hefty yet minimal percussive techno at Club Rockets in Osaka to an audience enraptured. Released as Mix-Up, the 90-minute recording captures Tanaka sounding rather like Jeff Mills or Surgeon. It's far cry from the sound he's known for today, as one of the key figures among Perlon's coterie of DJs pushing restrained, funky cuts across the globe. Fumiya Tanaka's creative arc has seen him move away from these thunderous sounds to warmer shades of house and minimal. Since 2016, he's found a home on the inimitable German minimal label, crafting out a distinctive sound within the labels roster with an affection for tumbling basslines and spooky atmospheres. From 1996 to 2023, Tanaka ran a party series in Tokyo, Osaka and Berlin called "Chaos," which encapsulates the ethos of freedom Tanaka brings to a party. "When you hear music you've never heard before and encounter unknown territory, you will be so happy and totally absorbed," he told us back in 2019. "I want to keep that feeling." RA.964 achieves exactly that. Nearly three decades on from Mix-Up, (and after a good few years of asking), Tanaka's RA Podcast captures the Perlon maestro in a full house mode. Recorded at a Slapfunk party in Amsterdam, Tanaka keeps the vibe funked-up, chunky and warm, punctuated by the occasional big breakdown and the odd lick of garage rudeness. No tracklist for now—but as Tanaka knows well, half the fun lies in the mystery. @fumiyatanaka_official Read more at ra.co/podcast/964

Normally an elusive creature, The Mole can usually be found behind a DJ booth during the wee smoky hours in the midst of long, drawn-out sets. Known for his love of sonic collage and musical noodling, he boasts a long and colourful list of releases for labels like Perlon, Ostgut Ton, Slices of Life, Circus Company, Haunt, Musique Risquée, New Kanada, Internasjonal and longtime home Wagon Repair. "Fun story. My old friend Lex recorded this mix at a party here in Victoria, on a whale watching boat, with his minidisc, in 97! He's been telling me about the recording for years. Only now that I've moved back to this lovely island have I had the chance to hear the mix. Time warp. I often feel like I having conversations with a younger me. This is a nice one. =)" @moleofsoul

After a stellar week for premieres, we wrap up for this week with an amazing, high octane techno track, from hardware enthusiast Stefan Goldmann. Goldmann's music has been released on labels like Perlon, Innervisions, and others since 2001. In further years, Goldmann has created a tight relationship with Berlin's Berghain and Panorama Bar club, for which he publishes a column, is a co-author of its book, and is the creator of the Elektroakustischer Salon event series. Goldmann's label, Macro was founded by in 2007 and has released some legendary records from equally incredible artists. Its releases range from techno tracks to symphonic recordings. It has also been home to releases from artists such as KiNK, Maria Chavez, Peter Kruder, Pete Namlook, Raudive, Santiago Salazar and remixes by Pépé Bradock, Ricardo Villalobos and The Knife's Oni Ayhun. A series of three 7″ on records on Macro, sees Stefan Goldmann probing the upper temporal reaches of techno. Clocking in at 150 bpm, these tracks are bold and blazing signals for a collective return to highly energised club experiences. More bouncy than harsh, these tracks show impressively how different tempos allow for their own variety of joyful expression. Toady we premiere the track ‘Geared' which finishes out the 6 track release with raw voltage and sparks flying. The blistering yet functional techno bomb is driven by well crafted analogue tool. Bleep heaven at 150bpm, sounds good to me. Avenue Red is proud to present a long-time favourite artist of ours, a man who for over 20 years has been lurking in the darkest, most shadowy lairs of the deep subterranean underground... enter German musical mastermind Stephan Laubner, better known to most down here as STL, also as Lunatik Sound System. Located somewhere amid the Harz mountains in northern Germany, he is well known as a talented and vastly innovative producer, especially in experimental electronic, ambient and deep, dub techno circles. But almost nobody, even in these tightest and narrowest of niches has ever heard a DJ mix from this rather mysterious figure (aside from a totally out of the blue RA Podcast in 2014). Today, that changes, as he has decided to unleash some real fury right here on Avenue Red. His debut release was called "Portside Waves" and was the 13th release on Perlon in 1999, with this spooky, insanely hypnotic track coming with some bizarre infinite locked-groove loops on one side - the flipside featuring Ricardo Villalobos & Martin Schopf under their Ric Y Martin guise. This paved the way for a discography that, at time of writing, totals approximately 100 releases. As well as being the mainstay of his Something label (link below), his releases are scattered across the likes of Smallville Records, echospace [detroit], Echocord, Silent Season, Assemble Music, Phonica White, The Untold Stories and many more. We highly respect and recommend a visit to his hand-rolled Something Records website too, which is packed with soul and contains some amazing secrets waiting to be found. This mix is a live DJ performance riddled with trippy effects and unusual mixing techniques. A mix like no other. It is alien, beautiful, strange, venomous, intoxicating and downright awe-inspiring, as with everything this rare Midas has touched. "Since a while ago I have been in contact with Pierre AKA Caillou. His new label is Chateau Chépère on which I have an upcoming EP. We chatted about music and mixing and shared a few links to each other's publications (he made 2 Avenue Red Podcast episodes: 136 and 172). He was sending me a link to an Avenue Red mix he was doing and so I - or we - had the idea to send a mix from me to AR as well. Since most of the music I make is usually within the studio I am not really a DJ - more a production head. Nevertheless, sometimes I dig out those old vinyls and record a tape. The mix provided was done pretty much out of the feel and almost desire to play some records again. I don't do this every day. I keep that for special times or at meetings with some friends or family. Actually this session turned out to be very much full of life and energy. I wanted to keep with a certain flow. Tightness was not the best. However I think it is still enjoyable. Not just a dead mix, but something coming from taking the action to create something enjoyable, at least for my side. For me the music and the mixing often is something that belongs together. I mean a dub techno mix probably would not have been done this way. Glad Alec is liking it and I hope you enjoy this one at your end too :)" Stephan Laubner, November 2021 https://soundcloud.com/synthonic-matter http://www.something-records.com https://www.discogs.com/label/17573-Something https://www.discogs.com/artist/153541-STL PS. Bside Incoming: The Mole This week's episode of Bside Incoming has been placed in the reliable hands of Canadian DJ and Producer, avid collector of records, label boss of Maybe Tomorrow, and man of musical passion: Colin de la Plante AKA The Mole. Often to be found digging blindly into uncharted subterranean regions on the impassioned pursuit of novel sounds, The Mole endeavours to return to the surface with buried treasures for the keen and willing ears of his audience. Beyond his reputation as a top class live act with an infectious enthusiasm behind the decks, there is much to be said for his prowess as a producer, notably his involvement with Units & Measurements, The Modern Deep Left Quartet, and most recently with his Deadbeat Meets the Mole release on BLKRTZ. Go check out his discogs/bandcamp pages for more: https://themole.bandcamp.com/ https://www.discogs.com/artist/111868-The-Mole With a career spanning 20 years: originating in Vancouver and currently based in Berlin; releases on such prestigious labels as Ostgut Ton, Perlon, Musique Risquée and Internasjonal; worldwide festival appearances at Mutek, Houghton, Sandbox and Outline; and an ever longer list of collaborative musical projects… we are certainly very excited for Colin to guide us through some of his most cherished Bsides. Starting out with a focus on slow burning percussion, and left field jazz, before picking up the pace with some smooth electronica, feel good funky beats and some powerful disco. A healthy dose of legendary artists: Patrick Adams, Billy Preston, Marvin Gaye and Hamilton Bohannon; lightly sprinkled with soulful global sounds throughout and an excellent history lesson for each record. Ever tasteful in his selection, and always keeping us on our toes… The Mole keeps on giving! Enjoy!
@stefangoldmann runs the @macrorec label and is closely associated with Berlin's @berghain club. Though nominally techno, his music is distinguished by an ever-imaginative take on the form. It's definitely club music but of a rather distinctive kind produced by a creator who's exceptionally imaginative, endlessly curious, and, one presumes, never happier than when bringing a project to fruition. Several of his tracks have served as genre-shifting blueprints – from his early reductionist works for the Classic and Perlon labels to Sleepy Hollow, Lunatic Fringe or The Maze. Yet he has ventured into a line of projects hacking away at the core features of techno, with systematic forays into, for example, irregular rhythms, microtonal tunings and the recontextualisation of industrial sound design. Apart from DJing in clubs around the globe, his projects have also brought him to locations as distinctive as the Berlin Philharmonic, Los Angeles's LACMA museum and Kyoto's Honen-in Temple. His mix for @recorder-13 sees him build a highly focused arc, originating from amorphous tones by Grischa Lichtenberger and Mika Vainio, projecting through intricate structural experiments by Donato Dozzy, Stanislav Tolkachev and Aleksi Perälä and culminating in high pressure tracks by the likes of Schacke, L'estasi Dell'oro and Peter van Hoesen. The landing point is an excerpt from Stefan Goldmann's 'Live At Philharmonie Berlin' album, which was just released on Macro. Tracklist: 1. Grischa Lichtenberger - 0910_29_re_0910_08 (Semantica) 2. Check out our latest label releases + free downloads at http://monologuesrecords.bandcamp.com We’ve been trying to get South African talent Portable (aka oddball techno artist Bodycode) on the podcast for ages, and we’re delighted to finally snare him. His mixture of deep house and techno flavours, occasional snatches of African rhythm and his haunting, moody, vocal style give his tracks an inimitable sound, and this glorious mix takes you from his deepest moments to some of his most heady. Formerly of !K7 Records, Live At Robert Johnson, Dial and Perlon to name but a few, his sterling reputation continued with the recent ’The Transit Of Mercury’ album on his newly-minted Khoikhoi Records label. *How would you describe your sound?*Music that elevates into another plane of thought, via rhythm and future primitive tones. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* It’s pretty broad, but generally speaking anything outside the norm — be it film, nature, music or art. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* The majority of the material is from the last year or so and from my own label Khoikhoi Records, which is named after a tribe of South Africa, the region where I grew up and are my indirect ancestors, so the selection of tracks represents this new independent phase I am in. Tracklist:Portable - You Hacked Me [Khoikhoi Records]Portable - Symmetry [Scape] Portable - His Passing Moment [Khoikhoi Records]Portable - Visiting Hours [Khoikhoi Records]Portable - This Horizon (Bodycode Bellycloud Remix) [Khoikhoi Records]Portable - Believing [Khoikhoi Records]Portable - Release [Perlon Records]Portable - We, The Workers [Khoikhoi Records]Portable - Don’t Give Up [Sudelectronic]Portable - Climb [Khoikhoi Records]

About V ka Artist biography: Despite the fact that she based in Russia, most of the events with her participation take place abroad. As a record selector, she has been carefully collecting her vinyl collection for several years, where you can find such labels as: Sleep is commercial, Nervmusic, All Inn Black, Perlon, Amam, etc., releases of which she is willing to share in clubs, on podcast channels and online broadcasts, such as RTS.FM, FM4 and Feeder.ro An open mind and an independent view allow her to accurately select a compilation for the audience of the country club or podcast where she will perform. Her musical style in Berlin was jocular called "gangsta style" for a reference to hip-hop in part of the broken sound in her sets, in the stylistic range between breakbeat of the 90s, Romanian hypnotic vibe, micro and minimal house, compositions with an implicit confusing rhythm from friends-producers from Eastern Europe. In V ka sets, you can hear the author's work under the alias Sophisticated Curiosity (the project of two artists with same vision of music) Portfolio link: @v_ka Country: Russia

This is the third DJ set from it and my personal favorite. I think it tells a story that you'd hear at a late afterparty where you could dance to it if you want, but nodding your head and dancing with your mind would be just as fitting. In accordance with the contest theme, I consider the tracks to transcend the concept of space, being able to teleport you wherever and with whoever you feel most comfortable. The set includes some of the dearest tracks to me and combines rominimal, deep house and some other nice foreign surprises as well. Enjoy! About Sandoo Artist biography: I'm a 22 year old music enthusiast from Romania. I discovered house and minimal during my bachelor years in Bucharest. Little by little, I grew to want to express myself through music too, while trying to find the sound that I like. I started DJing at friends' parties at the end of 2018 and began producing a little while ago, as well. Portfolio link: @sand00 Current city: Suceava, Romania
It happens so fast. It's time for the finale to the podcast's third season. Maybe there'll be another one after all of this rona business is over? But for episode five (and the 19th total), Kevin welcomes his delightful friend Gaby to the show, and the two spend a lot of time laughing at a joke that will never be told, knowing the fucking vibes, turning that shit off, making fun of incels, and taking a jaunty stroll through Gaby's marginally eclectic selection of music. A whopping 11 songs total, many of which will give you shaking your 'groove thang.' For more information about Anhedonic Headphones, don't be shy—click here. So, here we are... Kicking off the new year with a mix from perhaps one of the most important German producers and DJ's of the last twenty years. Soulphiction has been a stalwart of electronic music having released definitive material on the likes of Perlon, Pampa and Playhouse amongst others. He is also the co-founder of Philpot, a record label which he launched in the year 2000 alongside his friend Blacktrane. Michel Baumann grew up in a time by which the dj was king and crate digging was essential, as such he has always drawn upon influences from the golden age of boogie, hip hop, soul and funk. Much of his own music draws upon a deep rooted love and respect for that which came before, it's partly why his own resulting take on deep house is as special and unique as it is. Last year saw perhaps the best representation of his own musical identity through the release of a new album, a three part LP for Local Talk, which allowed him to showcase the breadth of his own progression through sound. Not one to often record mixes, we are delighted and humbled to be able to feature a mix from a much loved talent.
I don´t always need to be hardcore underground electro banging, I can be pop and synthie and wavey as well! My dearest sister, Amy TNT, gave me the opportunity to play at her Perlon Party. Of course, you can´t go too hard on people who actually love Madonna and Kylie Minogue, so this is my Perlon Kosmic Kitten Set, a cosmic synth pop set like a mild cosmic breeze on a gay adult movie set on a tropical island on Neptune. Enjoy it! Tracklist: 1. Soviet - Keep Fit Electro 2. Donna Summer - Bad Girls (Boys Noize Club Mix) 3. Róisín Murphy - Incapable (Dimitri from Paris and Aeroplane Remix) 4. Corine - Marche nocturne (Pacific State Remix) 5. In Flagranti - Interdisciplinary (Mode Version) 6. Riton - Inside My Head (Aeroplane Remix) [feat. Meleka] 7. In Flagranti - Double Talk (Dinamo Azari III Remix) 8. S'Express - Theme from S'Express (12" Version) 9. Röyksopp - The Girl and The Robot (Joakim Remix) 10. Avalon Emerson - Quoi! (Tuff City Kids Clean Shave Mix) 11. LCD Soundsystem - Get Innocuous! (Soulwax rmx) 12. Simian Mobile Disco - Cruel Intentions (feat. Beth Ditto) 13. Aeroplane - Whispers (Original Mix) 14. Shura - White Light (Blonde's Acid Trip Remix) 15. Robyn - Ever Again (Soulwax Remix) 16. Tracey Thorn - Why Does The Wind (Michel Cleis Remix) 17. Shit Robot - Take 'Em Up (John Talabot Remix) 18. Ray Mang - Big Bambu (Bamboo Beats) 19. Jürgen Paape - So Weit Wie Noch Nie 20. Lifelike - So Electric 21. Goldfrapp - Alive (Joakim Remix) 22. SFire - Sfire 6 23. Bat for Lashes - Pearl's Dream
I've owned my Antonio Giuliani Primo from Kennedy Violin for 2 1/2 months. My first fiddle. I put Fiddlerman strings on it (Perlon core). I've been able to pick out some tunes that I know on the banjo that I took up 7 years ago and this is one of them. I'm using the Giuliani wood bow (72 ounces) that came with the outfit.

His debut in music all started through digging the parents‘ Soul and 80‘s Dance Tapes in his childhood, Tension got influenced with music early. By listening to genres like Hip Hop, Metal and later Drum & Bass aswell as House Music, he got entusiastic about the diversity of electronic music. Those Inspirations have inspired his musical career, but contributed to his eclecticism in sound. By gathering experience at clubs and festivals since 2006, he soon got deeper into DJing and producing various electronic sounds. Based in his hometown Bielefeld, he took his sound to South Africa in 2013 for a 14 days tour, followed by gigs at Berlin‘s Kater Holzig, Maria am Ostbahnhof and Tresor in 2016. Beside several EP‘s, he released his first self entitled album on his regular, Berlin-based label „Be Sure“. Relevantly embossed by labels like Basic Channel, Ostgut Ton or Perlon, he situates his sound between the poles of (Dub-)Techno, Electronica and Breakbeat, but with a touch of minimalism which he expresses aswell in his DJ- as in his Livesets. We hope you enjoy this set as much as we did and we'll meet again very soon with another promising guest :) Fresh sounds @ https://soundcloud.com/tension-music Follow his activity @ https://www.facebook.com/tensioninfo/
➱ With a very considerable musical background, Julien Sandre shared the decks with important figures of the minimal-house scene such as Zip, Raresh, Margaret Dygas, Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Soundorom, Cesar Merveille, etc. ➱ The podcast he sent us is full of joy, giving you a happy mood while it sends you straight in the middle of a party. DJ, producer, label manager and collector of vinyls ... It is clear how much music has an important role in the life of Julien, who, however, had to get busy, and not a little, to realize his ambitions. Growing up on the outskirts of his city, Julien started very young, in his room with two battered turntables and boxes of discs. Then came the performances in small clubs of his city and the first floor acclamation that appreciated the elegant and original musical research that already characterized his dj set. The sound of this phase was well represented from house of Derrick Carter, of MAW, of Paul Johnson & David Duriez. The approach to the Parisian underground scene and the desire of a more personal and sought style stimulated his interest in more complex and intriguing sounds that shaped the sound of the artists of French label Freak 'n' Chic and micro-house electronic of Romanian scene and of the German label Perlon. This veritable "musical epiphany" has definitely represented a turning point in the musical journey of Julien who at that time started with the activity of producer. In a few years it has carved out a significant role and highly respected in the complex and difficult world of electronic music with its sought after DJ set in around Europe, during which he also shared the console with important figures of the environment among the such as Zip, Raresh, Margaret Dygas, Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Soundorom, Cesar Merveille and his productions with which he was able to work with some of the most important labels in the industry and have always received great support from top international DJs. In 2015 he opened with his friends and partners Konstress , the label only vinyl Blind Box that already has become in a few months a true derives "cult" label for fans of the genre and whose release are easily found in bag of Ricardo Villalobos, Arpiar and Zip. Julien's music search is unceasing and constantly changing and determined to make his style more original and intriguing for the listener of his sets and his productions. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, he had the chance to live the open minded music revolution of these golden times and so he savored to the fullest. At this time he was inspired by synthesizer sounds of the 80´s & 90´s, which smooth the way forwards electronic music. “Groove, melody, fat basslines, atmospherically sounds and unexpected stories” from house to techno: this is how we could sum-up the musical style of Mirco, influenced by a wide selection of producers and labels, including Âme, Steve Bug, Ricardo Villalobos, Robosonic, DJ Koze and labels like Poker Flat, Sonar Kollektiv, Perlon, Noir and Suara, among others. With accurate mixes, full of power and good vibes, his sessions will lead you to dance till the end! Mirco has already released a whole bunch of ep´s and remixes for Metanoia, Circle Music, Whatiplay, Sunset Handjob, Off Recordings, Kindisch and more. He recently launched a brand new side project in collaboration with his fellow partner Beatamines, producing together under the moniker of Ektschn!, with two vinyl ep´s, signed on Super Flu’s label Sunset Handjob. So we can look forward to new projects and stuff, because boredom is a loanword for Mirco!
There is no one quite like San Proper. The Dutchman is a rare and real character in a scene that is all too often devoid of genuine personality. It shows in the wild music he makes, the wonderful Red Light Radio shows he hosts and the often weird sets he serves up at clubs and festivals round the world. Releasing most often on Rush Hour but also on Dopeness Galore and Perlon, he can do dark minimal as well as big hearted soul and can lay down a big guitar riff or program an off kilter drum line all with equal élan. His Dekmantel podcast finds the Dr. dig deep into his vinyl collection and serve up 23 slabs of soul, funk and afro magic across two hours that feel very personal. Traversing scenes, styles and tempos with flawless mixing and blending, he tells a very colour tale that breaks all the rules of a usual mix yet still makes complete sense. It is the sound of a selector who has open ears and who, ten years since his first release, is as thrilling and unpredictable as ever.
In 2013 Daniel Bortz released his debut album 'Patchwork Memories', an 11-track selection of deep cuts bleeding with melancholy, black keys and nostalgia. Bortz's laser-precision production skills were in full flight here, and his ability to use very little elements to fill out each track is the work of a serious professional. The album was filled with the sort of low-slung house which could easily double up as a downtempo soundtrack to a lazy Sunday afternoon. Look into his back catalogue you will find that his debut album was no anomaly: his discography is loaded with brooding melodies and infectious rhythms. As you can expect, he follows the same route in the club where Bortz tend to favour the cuts which make you feel as much as dance. Of late, the German has been injecting a darker sound into his DJ sets which might come as a surprise to those who know him for his 'deep house', but Perlon is one of his favourite labels, and that influence is definitely starting to become more relevant in his productions. (This should come as no surprise, the back catalogue of his Pastamusik imprint is loaded with his appreciation for the microhouse/minimal techno label) On the verge of an Australian tour (dates at bottom of article), Bortz has delivered the next Balance Selections podcast. It's safe to say that you are in good hands... Interview here: http://www.balancemusic.com.au/news/balance-selections-028-daniel-bortz/
You Find The Key"(Perlon!! Episode - 110 Tension in the mix. [No Traklist] -- "A frog living in the well, is judging the extent of heaven by the edge of his well" Based on this chinese adage, William G. alias "Tension" always handled his musical influences and works to the exact opposite. Born in Lipsia (Germany) in 1988, he was interested in various styles of music already in his childhood. Inspired by the musical collection of his parents, he defined his roots in Rock, Metal and also nineties Soul and Hip Hop. By the first visits of local clubs and festivals, he discovered the electronic music scene and was fascinated by techno acts like Carl Craig, Jeff Mills or labels like Basic Channel, Perlon or even Ninja Tunes.Driven by the minimal Sounds of the millennium years, djing and producing weren't far away. Based on this mixed influences he always creates a certain deepness in his music, trying to express feelings and experiences in his sounds and dj sets. Music for the mind. We are extremely excited to welcome this man to the show! With releases on Perlon, Karat Records, Spectral Sound, Süd Electronic and upcoming on Rhythm Cult, Portable has appeared on a string of highly credible imprints. Spending his early years in Cape Town, he moved to London, followed by Lisbon, before finally settling in Berlin. He has also reated his Bodycode alias - somewhere between the beats for the body and melody for the soul - layering tech-funk with wisps of melody, heady effects, and a liberal wash of otherworldly vocal samples. His alter-ego maybe? Enjoy this exclusive recording of his live set at Live At Robert Johnson. Brilliant!

Justin Harris has been active as a DJ since 1987 and has been producing since 1994 in collaboration with Luke Solomon and under the names Robotic Movement, Free soul (with Diesel) and Oliloqui for labels like Classic (Luke Solomon and Derrick Carter), Phono, 20/20 Vision, and SSR. Justin Harris’ illustrious musical career kicked off way back in 1987 when he was a regular DJ at the first pioneering Acid House events in the UK. He later went on to become one half of the DJ partnership North & South (with Nigel Casey, House of 909), who were infamous on the Warehouse and free party / DiY circuit throughout the UK and Europe in the early 90's… a blur follows of free parties, thrills, pills, and belly laughs..read on.. Upon moving to London in 1993, Justin turned his technical dexterity to the studio and began making some of the most innovative and left-field house music around. Seventeen years ago, he teamed up with Luke Solomon to create the ground breaking Freaks project. Freaks have over 80 productions under their belt, including remixes for artists such as Revlon9, Matthew Herbert, The Good Books, Kassabian, Soft Cell, The Human League, Derrick Carter, Greenskeepers, Tiefschwarz and Damon Albarn to name a few… and have themselves recorded for such esteemed labels as Perlon, Wally's Groove World, Classic, Playhouse, International Deejay Gigolo, Silver Network, Rebirth Records, Hot Creations, Crosstown Rebels and of course the legendary Music For Freaks (MFF) and Classic Recordings. We asked Justin what House music means to him, to which he responded; “Don't want to sound cheesy but for me It's a lifestyle..... Not an hour goes past in any one day where it doesn't play some kind of a part in my life... It's quite simply all encompassing. House Music picked me up more than 25 years ago in the middle of what was a deep recession in the UK , it strapped me in and took me and a generation on a journey that is still going strong. I have literally devoted my working (and most of my social) life to House Music. What it has given me back far outweighs anything I could ever put in to it.” Justin describes the House Gangster sound as; “Bumping, jacking and absolutely taking no prisoners..... I've known Sneak and his sound since the mid 90's when I first met him in Chicago (at Derrick Carter's place with Luke Solomon after a mad night of partying) and I've hung out and heard him play many times since .. his music always was about 'that' sound and it's great to see it get the recognition and respect it deserves.” Justin continues to go onto say; “To me this movement means a solid and tight global crew. Whether producers, DJ's, artists, promoters, house music lovers, party heads, hustlers, record labels (and the list goes on).... We are all united by a love of House Music and therefore part of the same family.........in short it's all about the music.” Asking Justin how he compiled his mix, he says; “I just imagined myself at one of your parties, took a bunch of records and CD's to select from that I would (and in the future will) play there and went for it.... had a great time doing it too.” Explaining how it represents him as an artist, he tells us; As an artist this mix represents my interpretation and understanding of the House Gangster sound and the vibe I get from it. It has tracks in it that date back more than 20 years as well as some pretty amazing new music with loads in between. I'd say it's a pretty good cross section of what moves me and has influenced my taste over the years.” Finally, giving a special mention about this mix, Justin comments, “I'm totally stoked to be asked to do it... There are so many of my musical heroes who have supplied a Gangstercast and it's dope to be part of this movement.” Justin has also included in his Gangstercast mix, his very own ‘Random Jazz’ – the title track of his EP , his debut release on the I’m A House Gangster imprint, on 13th April. Here is the full tracklisting: 1)Demuir - Childish Games - Treasured Grooves 2)O & A - Feel The Rhythm - Play It Down 3)Ninetoes - On Demand - Play It Down 4)Natural Rhythm - Track for Mark - Natural Rhythm Music 5)Greenbay Jackers - Ride Yours Here - 294 records 6)Hector - Haunted - Tsuba Records 7)JT Donaldson - Vanguard Night - Vista Recordings 8)Justin Harris - Random Jazz vol - I'm A House Gangster 9)Natural Rhythm - Jazz Boogie - Natural Rhythm Music 10)Boe & Zak - Looking for Love - Classic Music Company 11)DJ Sneak (Sneaky traxxII) - Tribal Rhythm - Defiant 12)Phil Hooton - Afro Phunk - Phuture Rhythms 13)MadCut Up - Unknown White Label 14)Justin Harris - Got Time To Move (David Duriez Remix) - Something Different 15)Dave Aju - Nu Threads (Freaksnuthreadsspeakeasymix) - Circus Recordings 16)Madness Last night - Lars Behrenroth - Deeper Shades Recordings 17)Evren Furtuna - Love Is Killing Me - Kolour Recordings 18)Michel Kleis - Gostech - Rebirth Recordings 19)The Players - Easy 2 Jam (Romains Jackin Out Dub) - Metro Trax 20)Kid Enigma - Unconditional - I'm A House Gangster 21)Ananda Project - Cascades Of Colour - Justin Harris Wamdue redoo 22)Michel Kleis - Marvinello - Rebirth Recordings

INTERVIEW + TRACKLIST > inverted-audio.com/mix/the-mole The Mole is the alias of Colin de la Plante. Originally from Canada, Colin is now based in Berlin, where almost every electronic producer is living. With releases spanning from Perlon to Vitalik, Wagon Repair to New Kanada it's hard to pin down where exactly The Mole calls home. We caught up with Colin to speak to him about his music musical heritage as well as his heavily rotated 'History Of Dates' EP released in 2013 on Perlon, which also featured Terre Thamlitz's stunning "Sprinkles' Crossfaderama" remix on the flip. This saturday on the show it's episode #350, and we're here to celebrate! Ronin & Nesta invite creative mastermind trio, Wareika, taking control of the decks. Always maintaining intellect depth and dynamism in their compositions, their productions are highly regarded, including albums, singles and remixes on labels like Visionquest, Perlon, Circus Company and Eskimo; all ranging from Balearic to deep Techno, jazzy House sounds and from Balkan-Jazz to dubby riddims. There are many more horizons, hidden valleys and unclimbed peaks to conquer in music: tune in to the show and follow the sound of Wareika.
Track List: 01.Wareika_Wternal (Visionquest) 02.Wareika_Five Edges (Visionquest) 03.Jamie Jones - Change (Hottrax) 04.Les Fils du Calvaire - Femme d'Affaires - dop Rmx (Circus Company) 05.Silky Raven - Caterpillars & Birds (Connaisseur Recordings) 06.Tom Trago & Young Marco & Awanto 3 - Physical Thrill - Genius of Time Rmx (Studio Soulrock) 07.FaltyDL - Straight & Arrow - Four Tet Rmx (Ninja Tune) 08.Karocel - It_s me - Wareika Rmx (Freude am Tanzen) 09.Douglas Greed - Sociopathic (Freude am tanzen) 10.Skatebard - The bells of mist_ (Snuff Track 09) 11.Darling Farah - Aaangel - Darling Farah's Edit (Civil Music) Biography: Wareika started as a creative project in summer 2007. Actually school friends Jakob Seidensticker and Henrik Raabe had started a band called "The Havana Boys" some years ago and where kind of a house-band for the famous Mojo Club in Hamburg. While playing another gig in the holy halls Florian Schirmacher, already famous with projects like "Glowing Glisses", jumped the stage and just hit it. And so Wareika took off. The very first release is called "Men Village" (2008 Connaisseur Rec) and demonstrates the deep influence of Jazz music and wobbly dub-sounds that all three musicians are heavily into. Definitely no need to mention King Tubby or Sun Ra. It also showcases the musical education that all three artists enjoyed from an early age on. Henrik Raabe studied guitar, drums and piano, Florian was educated in singing and the piano, while Jakob can master a fretless bass and plays all kinds of percussions. Besides this classical and high level education Jakob and Florian are also very much into djing and they know their club-roots and a lot about Techno, House and all sorts of contemporary club music. So the high versatility of styles in their music takes no wonder. Their productions including, three albums, several single releases and more than a dozen high-profile remixes on different labels like Tartelet, Perlon, Circus Company, Future Classics, Eskimo and many others are ranging from Balearic to deep Techno, jazzy House sounds and from Balkan-Jazz to dubby riddims. Wareika are always maintaining their smart intellect, depth and dynamism in all compositions. It ́s a bright and dazzling kaleidoscope of melodies and polyrhythmic or four to the floor beats that is entirely unique in the electronic worldwide circuit and you can may be label their music with the term Jazz-Not-Jazz or even better Techno-No-Techno. Whatever you may call it, it ́s deep and atmospheric but it never misses the groove! When it comes down to live gigs the trio is very keen on defining a quality and outstanding sound and always play 100% live. Definitely no computers on stage! Due to the fact that they are playing mainly in Club venues they beef up their sounds. And even though they are definitely not your average club heads band, they still get the masses raving and dancing to their sets that can endure up to 3 hours... Jakob Seidensticker (MPC arrangements, effects, mixing) Florian Schirmacher (vocals, keyboards and percussions) and Henrik Raabe (guitar, percussions and vocals) are playing in venues all around the world from London to St. Petersburg, from Miami to Oslo and from Tokyo to Brazil. Itʼs always thrilling to see Wareika on stage as Techno-marries-Jazz improvisers, while they are recreating their recorded masterpieces like „Kingʼs Child“ (2009 Motivbank) or „Harmonie Park“ (2010 Perlon) into something completely new, or just improvise and create things unheard so far. Many of these stage-born songs are now captured on vinyl and CD, forming their fourth full-length album „Wternal“. It will be out on Visionquest in October 2013.

Minimal techno is a minimalist sub-genre of techno. It is characterized by a stripped-down aesthetic that exploits the use of repetition, and understated development. Minimal techno is thought to have been originally developed in the early 1990s by Detroit based producers Robert Hood and Daniel Bell, although what is currently referred to as minimal largely developed in Germany during the 2000s, and was popularised by labels such as Kompakt, Perlon, and M-nus. Recorded in Pacha (Ibiza) During the Cadenza Vagabundos Residence Party (Essential Mix) No Introduction needed for Luciano, Simply a master at work. Born in 1978, Luciano is a DJ since 1993 and a producer since 1997. In the mid-90's, he was promoting Sense Club and Encuentros con la Technocultura in Santiago de Chile in the company of many initiators of the Latin American electronic music scene: Senor Coconut AKA Atom Heart, Ricardo Villalobos, Dandy Jack & brother Adrian Schopf, Washington Miranda, Argenix Brito, Microman etc. He's played radio stations and DJed clubs & events in Santiago and Latin America, Germany, Spain & Holland, settling in Switzerland in 2000 to release on Mental Groove Records in Geneva, where he also holds a residency at the Weetamix club. His releases appear on the Transmat, Perlon, Lo-Fi Stereo, Bruchstuecke and Klang Elektronik record labels. Luciano's mixed Swiss & Chilean identity shows in his music, a somewhat mystical blend of deep techno & electro that integrates southern elements in rhythms and colorful patterns in sound. His collaborations with Ricardo Villalobos (Playhouse, Perlon, Warp, Force Inc etc.) as Sense Club are especially rewarding, as is his partnership with Pier Bucci and Argenix Brito as Monne Automne. Mellowing his style as times goes by, getting more experimental and spacey with a fresh style of his own, Luciano's production is destined to the wiser dancefloors that have enjoyed his live sets in Peru, Chile, Argentina, the U.S., Spain, Germany & Switzerland. DJ-wise, Luciano's trade relies on groovy & minimal.
Music that moves both your feet and your feelings has been a long-standing preoccupation of dj and producer Matteo Spedicati. His first influence was his dad, who played his eager young son records from his vast collection. Listening, the hairs on the back of his neck stood on end, and Matteo soon realised that this crazy strong response could only be delivered by music. Like many teenagers. Matteo, on guitar, formed a garage band with his friends in Calgari. Unlike his peers, Matteo began to compose his own songs, score the other instruments, and experiment with musical software, adding electronic sounds and effects when he produced the bands demos. Around the age of 21, he first started going out on the Italian clubscene and immersing himself in the minimal sound flourishing during that time. Matteo desperately wanted to dj. He didn’t have the money to buy turntables but he did have a PC, so when his friend, life-long collaborator, Renato Figoli, turned up one day with a cracked copy of Cubase 5 they set about recreating the sounds they were hearing on labels like Kompakt and Perlon. In 2006 Matteo released his first EP on imprint Gumption Records. That was just the start. Since then a series of exceptional releases, featuring his distinctive and infectious blend of techno and house, has earned critical acclaim and the support of an international line-up of fellow djs and producers. (Richie Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos and Karotte to name a few.) He has worked with Joseph Capriati on CMYK e Alchemy, with Alessio Mereu on Toy for Boys, with Mr. Bizz on Tuning Spork and Resopal, with Mendo on Great Stuff. In 2008 he embarked on an new project with Andrea Ferlin as Clarissa Haze Duo. This partnership, which they have now brought to SLEEP IS COMMERCIAL, saw them fusing their techniques together, adding a psychedilic and organic texture, to create an album and an live act that gained high profile support from the electronic music world. Following this Mateo also set up his own imprint, Carillion with friend with Guiseppe Cennamo in 2010. And of course, Matteo now has those turntables and his skills as a dj are just as assured as his productions. He is an increasingly influencial player back home as well as being invited to play across Europe, known for his discerning taste, his flawless technique, and the tangibiltiy of his dancefloor- making the crowds hairs stand on end- always aiming for that strong emotional connection he felt listening to his dads records all those years before.

Many people didn..t hesitate to say that was the best newcomer for 2006. He comes from the Reunion Island, a French department where he was living till the age of 18. Then he packed his stuff and moved to fascinating Paris, where he lives 7years now exploring the electronic sound at the French capital. A wide range of classical music background like 8years of playing piano, jazz and blues formation, as well a few years of percussions gave him the feedback to work on electronic music composition. He always tries to find a personal groove when it comes to his music. His interest in minimal house techno started with the discovery of the Perlon's crew. With influences like Pantytec, Melchior, Cabanne, Ricardo Villalobos and Matthew Dear, Daze Maxim show us two different sides in Seuil's music : dark rolling minimal along with modern minimal shaking house, but always with the same groovy spirit, heavy bass lines and obscure sounds collage, and to note that he is always inspired by his Argentinean friends that he collaborates quite often to give more noises for the dance floor. For just one year, he has been producing tracks to incorporate his own style to perform live. In 2007, he is moving one step ahead to launch own label contributing at the scene in one more way and hosting on wax artists like Lauhaus, Jorge Savoretti, Heartthrob, Cabanne, Miss Fitz, Ryan Crosson, Lee Curtiss as well as his own creations. He has being djing for 4-5years now, but the live act that he has been performing for a year now is a must see http://www.myspace.com/seuil By Lekernous Maximilien To be continu........

Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground MovementTROY PIERCE Biography Growing up in the quiet farm town of Muncie, Indiana four hours drive from Chicago and Detroit, it was hard to ignore the rich sounds emanating from these House and Techno strongholds. Troy was among the first to pick up on DJs like Derrick Carter, Jeff Mills and Richie Hawtin and was always out and about at parties in Detroit, Ohio and across the Midwest. Strangely enough though, he never thought about picking up a pair of headphones himself, preferring to leave the DJ duties to his friends. This way he could fully immerse himself in the music, especially the experimental ambient tones of the after hour chill outs. This all changed in 1994. He moved to New York to study photography and like every student worth their salt, blew the remainder of his cash on a pair of turntables. He’d been toying with the idea for a while and as luck would have it his flatmate was also the manager of Temple Records so there was an endless supply of quality tunes on hand from labels like Perlon to satisfy his growing vinyl addiction. Troy eventually hooked up with Magda at the Detroit Music Festival in 2001, who in turn introduced him to Mark Houle six months later. An immediate chemistry developed between the three of them and although Magda was now in Berlin, Mark in Windsor and Troy in New York they started swapping music files over the net. By the time the Run Stop Restore project finally crystallised into their debut release in early 2003, Troy had already moved to Berlin. It was a big decision to leave but somehow New York no longer offered up-and-coming musicians the same freedom of expression it used to, while Germany and Berlin in particular was setting new standards in minimal electronic music production. Since touching down in December 2002, he’s been letting his music do the talking. As a relative unknown, it’s never easy staking a claim in a new city, especially one with such a rich musical heritage but sure enough, through a string of successful gigs and a mixture of impressive releases on Minus (Run and Slacknoise), Underline (Louderbach) and Mo’s Ferry Productions, Troy has been attracting the right kind of attention and is now a regular performer on the European circuit. 2005 was the year when it all came good. The release of the Minimise to Maximise compilation and the accompanying tour left a lasting impression on clubbers at such centres of excellence as Robert Johnson in Offenbach and the Paradiso in Amsterdam but perhaps the real turning point came in August at pop.com. All those endless nights on the road and solitary days in the studio came together in one heart stopping set at the Watergate club. Taking the game to an expectant crowd including fellow producers and industry types, his uncompromising mix of minimal house and down beat, funked up techno announced, in no uncertain terms, that he was here for the long haul.As a DJ, attempts to categorise his style pose more questions than they answer. Minimalism in its purest form is a tag he more freely associates with labels like Consumed - ‘super sparse, difficult and totally out there’. Troy on the other hand, has developed a dance floor friendly hybrid sound that takes the best from the ‘little movements and micro trends’ that constantly spring up, helping electronic music to evolve. It retains the mechanical, futuristic sounds of techno but is slower and less abrasive allowing him to work between the lines, exploit the space between the beats and push out into the third dimension that epitomises the Minus sound. Like his label mates, Troy is a strong advocate of cutting edge technology like Ableton Live, Final Scratch and sample tools like Cyloop. The ability to shift between these sound sources offers him unparalleled flexibility as a DJ but the benefits don’t just stop there. He recalls road testing a new track one night in Berlin, getting the thumbs up from the rest of crew but then receiving puzzled calls the next day because the track didn’t sound quite the same – he was of course looping in samples ‘on the fly’ and it was this spontaneous improvisation that really set the dancefloor alight. Needless to say these overdubs found their way into the final mix. From a production point of view his tracks normally derive from experimenting with his Machine Drum or expanding outwards from the dark, atmospheric vocal elements that play a pivotal role in many of his productions. Inspiration often comes through choice regarding the effects he uses, rejecting standard, tried and tested settings in favour of unique percussive elements designed to challenge and intrigue. The result is a montage of scratchy subliminal textures and grinding beats. It’s edgy stuff driven by dark funky bass riffs that get right under the skin, the perfect tonic for any after hour as sleep deprivation starts playing tricks with the mind. As it stands, 2006 promises to be an even busier year than 2005. Having provided the backbone of their releases so far, Troy will wrap up his work for UK label Underline with the eagerly anticipated Louderbach LP. Alongside this, his growing status as a remixer (check out his version of Ellen Allien’s Your Body is My Body) will see him reworking the likes of Lawrence and Donnacha Costello. There’s also another Run EP in the pipeline but maybe the most interesting development is the conception of a new label - Items and Things - together with Magda and Marc Houle which should take flight in the spring. If that’s not enough, there’s a full-on, five week Minus tour of the US on the horizon. Richie, Magda, Marc and Troy will set off in May (complete with monster tour bus) for what can only be described as a next generation magical mystery tour during which they’ll take in 25 cities. They probably won’t be stopping in Muncie but it’s a sign of just how much his stock has risen over the past couple of years and confirmation that a solid work ethic, positive thinking and a total dedication to the cause always bears fruit in the end. Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground MovementWith the release of her solo STOP EP on Minus, Magda can finally afford to take stock of a whirlwind few years that have seen the insatiable demand for her very special blend of house and techno carry her the length and breadth of the globe. November 2005 and Magda’s set is reaching its climax at London’s Fabric. One moment she’s pounding the crowd with her very own 48 Hour Crack In Your Bass, the next the hairs on the back of 500 necks simultaneously stand to attention as the moody chords from Strafe’s all time classic Set It Off produce a collective gasp of appreciation from the dancefloor. She’s in the zone, unphased by the raucous response she’s generating. Virtually hidden by the racks of fx units and monitors surrounding her, she remains a picture of calmness, dictating the play with a cool hand. It’s easy to see why she’s one of the most exciting prospects to breakthrough in recent years. Magda makes things happen. Always has done, always will do. Currently residing in Berlin, a relative stone’s throw from her home town of Zywiec in Poland considering the nomadic existence of her childhood, she seems to have finally found a city that mirrors her own attitude to life - no restrictions and certainly no compromise. It’s a philosophy that also flows through Magda’s music particularly during her after hour sets. The ability to guide her audience through the dark recesses of contemporary minimalism before delivering them back safely into the light means her name is never far from the lips of discerning clubbers and fellow DJs alike. Her family left Zywiec for Texas in 1984 when she was nine before finally settling in Detroit in 1986. All this traveling around from one starkly contrasting environment to another, taught her to deal with new challenges and to adapt to new situations pretty quickly, lessons that have subsequently helped her deal with the often hectic life of a touring DJ. Always the outsider, the concept of ‘home’ was never as straightforward as it is for some. Sometimes though, home isn’t a physical location, it’s a state of mind and when she first turned up at a warehouse party a couple of blocks from where she’d grown up in the tough district of Hamtramck, she knew she’d found it. This initial foray into the Detroit underground culminated in the mind-blowing experience that was Spastik - Richie Hawtin’s first Plastikman PA. She was hooked. Within a few months, armed with a cheap pair of belt drive turntables and an unquenchable thirst for vinyl, she’d moved from one side of the shop counter to the other at the influential Record Time store and had also persuaded the bar where she worked to put on a monthly techno night with Claude Young and Daniel Bell. Her enthusiasm was totally infectious and they soon asked her to warm up for them. In conversation it’s clear to see how much the lack of attitude and unconditional support from Bell in particular has shaped Magda’s own way of doing things. Then, inspired by her mother’s ‘dark and surreal’ art she decided to study Graphic Design in New York state but soon realized music was the most natural medium for her self expression. Nevertheless, this abstract influence can still be found in her music production, juxtaposing as she does warm, thick swathes of sound with jagged little hi hat patterns, sometimes lazy, sometimes clinical but always purposeful and expressive. On returning to Detroit she met Richie Hawtin at one of the legendary Hot Box parties where a mutual friend introduced her. It was the first of what turned out to be a couple of chaotic encounters that eventually led to the invitation of a gig at Hawtin’s 13 Below night. It was there she first met Marc Houle. Their off-beat humor quickly developed into an unshakeable friendship and Magda was soon lodging with Marc in Windsor where their musical symbiosis started laying the foundations for 2003’s Run Stop Restore project together with Troy Pierce. By this time she’d already cut her teeth on the main stage, regularly performing at the System raves in Detroit and as part of the Women on Wax collective. Things don’t always go according to plan though, and by 1999 Magda was pretty much fed up with the ‘scene politics’ that seemed directly at odds with the feelings she’d first encountered. She took a step back, followed her heart and immersed herself in the minimal sounds scuttling out of Germany in particular (i.e Brinkmann, Perlon, Kompakt). The resulting bootleg CD mix - Fact and Friction - won her a new set of admirers and consolidated her growing relationship with Hawtin, opening for him at the millennium celebration EPOK and also forming part of an enviable line up at the Plus 8 ten year anniversary party From Our Minds To Yours. Since then she has become his sole choice as opening DJ, accompanying him on both European and Stateside tours. The new millennium brought a host of new digital technology with it, most notably Final Scratch and when she wasn’t on the road she could be found wiling away the hours transferring Hawtin’s vast record collection into the digital domain. At the time there were only about ten DJs using Final Scratch and while others regarded it with suspicion, Magda was quick to see the potential, re-editing her favorite tracks to further enhance the distinctive flavor of her sets. She shies away slightly from the ubiquitous ‘minimal’ tag, citing Chicago Jack and Acid as equally significant ingredients in her sound but whichever way you look at it, she is part of a movement that is rapidly redefining electronic dance music as we know it. Turntables, laptops, samplers and efx units now clutter her DJ booth as the wall between traditional DJing and ‘on the fly’ production starts to crumble. And so, the Minus train rumbles on, forging a relentless path through new, uncharted territory. Magda however, remains refreshingly free from the burden of expectation. Genuinely surprised by the trajectory her life has taken yet deeply aware of the responsibility she has to her growing army of fans, she faces the future with the same wide-eyed, ‘devil may care’ attitude that has always accompanied her from city to city, from airport to airport, from disco to disco. A lonely existence? For some maybe but Magda knows more than most that home is where the heart is. Berlin is a fickle friend, a city that throws up unlimited scope and unseen perils in equal measures. A muse to some - spurring them on to new heights of creativity, a vampire’s kiss to others - intoxicating at first, it eventually sucks them dry, leaving a hollow shell with nothing left but dreams of what might have been. Luckily, Magda already had something of the night about her when she arrived in 2003 and, liberated from the clutches of New York’s draconian attitude to club culture, she took to the Berlin underground like a fish to water. The notorious Beatstreet afterhour parties got the energy coursing through her veins once more and she immediately set about reevaluating and redefining her relationship to the music. An intense flurry of activity followed. Together with Troy Pierce and Marc Houle, Magda began exploring new production possibilities, honing her turntable skills and extending her dj sets in order to satisfy the insatiable appetites of Berlin’s club kids. The transition was by no means straight forward, taking both time and dedication but the hybrid sound that emerged, drawing inspiration from the twin towers of Berlin and Detroit, has gone on to capture the imagination of clubbers the world over. In this sense, last year’s mix compilation She’s a Dancing Machine represents the first volume of her audio-biography and sums up the ambition that drives this diminutive figure behind the decks. Somehow finding the time to throw down an epic 70 track, multi-layered excursion between the 130 shows she clocked up in 2006 (never mind the afterhours) really cemented her reputation, topping off a year that also saw her hold successful residencies at Robert Johnson (Offenbach), Technique (Leeds) and Fuse (Brussels) plus numerous appearances at festivals around the globe such as Lowlands, Sonar, The Detroit Music Festival and Mutek. Yet despite reaching the enviable position of being able to choose her gigs, there is no room for complacency. Shouldering the increasing weight of expectation she has come to expect the unexpected, in fact adversity has often propelled her on to greater things. There’s also a sense of duty to keep pushing the envelope and this year she’ll be expanding her set-up to incorporate new technology in addition to the delay pedals and edits that already give her sets their distinctive flavour. It’s a move that should blur the boundaries between studio production and live performance even further and will no doubt help formulate ideas for her upcoming album which promises to be another continuous exploration into deep, dark, minimal disco. However before that there’s a string of remixes to enjoy for 2007 including Heartthrob’s Baby Kate (Minus), Gotham Road by Ryan Crosson (Trapez) and Louderbach (Underline). It’s also worth keeping an eye on Items and Things, the new label from Magda, Marc and Troy that’s home to their more abstract, off the wall creations. Someone once said‚ the only place success comes before work is in the dictionary. Well, Magda has definitely put in the work although she’s happier leaving the definition of success to others. The arrival is superfluous. Just like her late night musical excursions, it’s the journey that’s important and with it the desire to maintain the high standards she sets and feed the creative hunger within - if that’s also good enough for us, then so be it.
