Heart Forward Conversations from the Heart

Season Five is a special treat:  made in Italy!  This past year, with generous support from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, Heart Forward was afforded the opportunity to curate a study group to learn about a system in Trieste, Italy that the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a global best practice for community-based mental health care.   As the  Équipe met regularly via Zoom to prepare for their October 2024 study visit, they fashioned a mission statement define their purpose:The Équipe is an intentionally curated and diverse learning community that is committed to advancing a more humane and holistic mental healthcare system. Rejecting the institutional status quo, which contributes to suffering, homelessness and incarceration in the US, we look abroad for bright spots that could inform sustainable change. So about these conversations.   During our week in Trieste,  I snuck away to do interviews in the city.  Who will you meet?Claudia Battiston.  Claudia is a Psychiatric Rehabilitation Technician – which is a role unique to Italy, but seems to complement what we know as occupational therapy.   Dr. Tomasso Bonavigo, interviewed alongside his colleague, Dr. Alessandra Oretti.   Bonavigo works in a community mental health center and Dr. Oretti is the director of the psychiatric unit in the central hospital and is as the interim director of the mental health department.  Elena Cerkvenic.  She is a service user in Trieste and just published a book this year called Sono Schizofrenica e amo la mia follia.  Dr. Mario Colucci.  A psychiatrist and philosopher, who has worked in the community system for most of his career and has written extensively about the Basaglian vision.  Dr. Giovanna Del Guidice.  Here's a female psychiatrist who managed to work alongside Franco Basaglia and now is dedicated to keeping the flame alive as she travels to other countries to provide training.Stefania Grimaldi.  One of the cornerstones of the model in Trieste is the network of social cooperatives.   We'll learn about one such social cooperative, La Collina, and how this system works.    Michele Sipala.  Michele, in a peer support role, is involved with a very innovative six-month residential program for young service users in the city's mental health system, Recovery House.  Beatrice Stanig.  She speaks about how the association – L'Una e L'Altra – has provided a place of purpose for her.  She is now a peer support specialist and has  written a book called, Sei Innocente.    Caterina Vicentini.  Caterina is a service user who provides a glimpse into how valuable the services in Trieste have been to her recovery and her ability to continue her career as a teacher.  The episodes will be ready for release mid-January 2025.  Subscribe so you will be alerted when the first episode is available. This is a non-sponsored podcast with no ads and entirely supported through donors.  To support this podcast, please consider a donation HERE.   And thank you to my technical producer, Aaron Stern of Verdugo Sound for editing and production support.

This transplant from the Chicago projects and sweet soul meets me at Kitchen Table Studios to tell me his come up story. From childhood instability and addiction coupled with poor choices and rough crowds, Thomas was destined to fall through the cracks. Listen as Thomas rebounds from getting shot twice in one week, losing jobs, losing relationships, losing kids, selling drugs, abusing booze and several DUIs. Along the way he functioned through work and coaching his daughter's basketball team; fueled by ego and pride. Thomas missed the final opportunity to see his sister the night before she died. He chose booze over visiting her. This final price he paid became the pivot point that led him to Champaign for treatment. He used every available resource to slowly climb his way into an ethical, hard working steward for others in need with a recovery house for men who want to turn their lives around. Now, a people person, he prides himself on "turning someone's worst day into their best day."Thank you so much for listening! Luke 21:5-19When some of them were speaking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God, Jesus said to them, “As for these things that you see, the time will come when not one stone will be left upon another. All will be thrown down.” They said to him, “Teacher, when will this be? What will be the sign that this is about to take place?” Jesus answered them, “Beware that you are not led astray. Many will come, in my name, and say, ‘I am he,' and ‘The time is near,' do not go after them.”“When you hear about wars and insurrections, do not be terrified. These things must take place first, but the end will not follow immediately. There will be great earthquakes and, in various places, famines and plagues. There will be dreadful portents and great signs from heaven.”“But before all this occurs, they will arrest you and persecute you. You will be handed over to synagogues and prisons. You will be brought before kings and governors, because of my name. This will give you an opportunity to testify, so make up your minds not to prepare your defense in advance, for I will give you words and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be betrayed by parents and brothers, friends and relatives, and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name. But not a hair on your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your souls.” This reading usually shows up in the most untimely way for us around here. I mean, it always shows up in November, on or around the Sunday when we are supposed to be praying about and planning for our financial commitments to the Building Fund – which we will do next week, if you haven't read or heard about that, yet.So what I mean is, around this time of year, during this season of our life together, we very often get this bit from Luke's Gospel where Jesus warns the disciples about making too much of their temple. As I'm typically hard at work stewing about prayer vigils, capital campaign packets, mortgage payments, and financial commitments, Jesus says, “As for these things that you see, this stuff that you've built – these beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God – the day is coming when not one stone will be left upon another. All will be thrown down.”And that's usually a hard pill to swallow. Like, Jesus is laughing at, if not straight up, flat out, judging our efforts to build what we've built here over the years. I mean, there's nothing like trying to build a thing, investing in everything it takes to build a thing, and have someone remind you that it won't last for long; maybe that you're wasting your time; that it's all going to amount to nothing but rubble in the grand scheme of things anyway. Jesus is like a guy who shows up to the beach to find that a little kid has just built his most prized, perfect, glorious sand castle and, instead of marveling at the hard work and majesty of it all, points out that high tide will be rolling in any minute. But this year, for the first time, things are different. I can't disagree with Jesus, of course. Maybe, in some very worldly ways … or from a cosmic kind of perspective … all of this BUILDING is for naught. It won't last FOREVER, in a physical sense. It will, indeed, crumble to dust, in the end. I get that. But this year – as we think about praying and planning for our “Building and Outreach Fund” commitments – we get to do that with even more than just our own bricks and mortar on the brain. We get to do that with even more than just mortgage payments and interest rates and financial debt reduction in mind, than we're used to. We get to think differently about all of this because, for the first time ever, we don't have a mortgage to pay and because we plan to give 50% of these funds away to mission and ministry outside of our walls; 50% beyond our own bricks and mortar; 50% over and above these stones that will, indeed, someday, all be thrown down, as Jesus promises. But what's so exciting and full of hope about things this time around – again, for the first time ever – is that we can't possibly measure who or how our generosity will change the hearts and lives of others, by the grace we'll share in the days ahead. And at the 24 Hour Prayer Vigil next weekend, we're going to have a chance to share, very plainly and prayerfully what we hope we'll be able to do in this regard. (Please, please, please sign up to be part of that, if you haven't already.) We're going to be able to make prayerful suggestions about the tangible, real-world ways, we hope we'll use our financial resources to do God's work in some really new, very meaningful, truly faithful ways.First, we'll get to be practical with our prayers. We'll share the scoop about what we would, could should be saving money for in our rainy day, repair and emergency bucket – stuff like HVAC repairs, parking lot resurfacing, roof replacements, exterior painting, and boring, but necessary, responsible stuff like that.Second, we'll be selfish and have some fun as we pray, too, by dreaming about what we might add to or renovate around here – like sanctuary expansion, an outdoor pavilion, better video projection and online technology. Someone I know wants a cement pad for a basketball/pickle ball court of some kind, for instance. Of course, when I say “selfish” I don't really mean “selfish,” if what we build for ourselves allows us to share grace and good news with more people, in different ways. There's nothing selfish about that. And third, we'll get to offer up ideas, too, about the 50% of it all we plan to give away. Over the years we've suggested everything from supporting mission churches and missionaries, to helping people reduce medical debt, to giving more regularly to some of our Mission Sunday organizations, like the Talitha Koum Women's Recovery House. Someone even has the notion to help fund a Baby Box, somewhere in our community where infants – who would otherwise be abandoned – could be left, safely, to be rescued instead. The possibilities – large and small – really are endless and inspiring. And all of this is nothing more or less than the testimony Jesus asks of us in today's Gospel. With our ministry, whether it's what we preach, teach, or support with our money we tell the world who we are. We tell the world who God is. And we show the world what we're up to together. With our ministry, whether it's what we preach, teach or support with our money we welcome the sinner, we tend to the sick, we love those who others refuse to see. It means we tend to sex workers on the east side. It means we fight racism in our midst. It means we support our LGBTQIA brothers, sisters and siblings. It means we build houses in Haiti and churches in Noblesville. It means we are generous and faithful and gracious to a fault – as if that were possible in the Kingdom of God.We may not be called before kings and governors, in our little corner of the Kingdom. It may not get us killed, these days, in our neck of the woods. But it may mean – as Jesus promises and warns – that some won't like, or may even hate, what we're up to. There are people out there who think we're too generous, too bold, too outspoken about the gospel and grace and good news we share, after all. And I kind of like that. I believe it's how we endure – and help others endure, too – the hardships of life in this world. And it's how we find our souls, in the midst of it all, too.Because, whatever we do and wherever we give and however God leads us, we're just trying to do what God's been calling believers to do ever since that day Jesus was milling around in the temple with those very first disciples – reminding them about what really matters on this side of heaven:Which is to use all of this as our opportunity to testify to what we know of God's call and God's kingdom among us: to work for justice; to stand for peace; to repent, ourselves, and to forgive others, too; and to use every blessing at our disposal to bless the world around us with the same grace that we have first received. That's the Kingdom of God alive and well in this place, for the sake of the world. And it's what will matter – to us and for others – and it's what will last, long after all of this and all of us are turned to dust.Amen

The Ohio Valley Center for Collaborative Arts at Ohio University, or CoArts, is a relatively new center and it's been busy. Of its many endeavors, one is to support programs that serve the healing of those living in the Appalachian Ohio region and beyond by bringing art into the healthcare space. A program like this was carried out at Serenity Grove Women's Recovery House, a home in the region for women in recovery from addiction. Talking Studio gathered the CoArts staff and two artists who worked with the women to learn about the program. What emerged is this episode of the College of Fine Arts' podcast, Talking Studio, called, “Embracing monsters.” It unpacks how using the expression of art informs the intense—and often painful—process of healing. This episode features CoArts' Angela Sprunger and OHIO College of Fine Arts faculty and artists Lindsey Martin and Jessica Fletcher The original song, “Soar,” was written by the women at Serenity Grove and performed by Jessica Fletcher. Parents of kids in recovery from substance use disorder may not think college is a good or even realistic option - who would be crazy enough to send their child who struggles with alcohol or drugs to a place where those things tend to be rampant and "normal?" This episode will be a beacon of hope for those parents who want their kids to continue on to higher education but are skeptical of the idea and don't know where to start in the process. Keith Murphy is the Senior Substance Abuse Counselor at Rutgers University where he heads up The Rutgers Recovery House, a 12-month, on-campus housing option that offers students the opportunity to have a fulfilling residential college experience living within a supportive community with other students in recovery. Keith provides so much information and perspective in this episode including:how he went from being a cocaine and heroin addict to heading up the Recovery House at Rutger's Universitywhy college recovery programs are the worst/best kept secret in the world of higher educationhis massive respect for parents who persevere and find college recovery as an option for their childwhat day to day life looks like for a college student in recovery - pre and during-COVIDthe reality that there are tons of activities and options for students on campus that have nothing to do with getting high or using substancesthe path he highly recommends to kids coming out of treatment before they step foot on a 4-year campushow and why he'd like to see collegiate recovery be a more equitable and equal space for marginalized populationshow a Eurocentric Western philosophy around recovery wasn't and isn't necessarily accessible or even understandable for many Black and other people of colorhis thoughts on what the word diversity actually meansthe disparities he sees in substance use and recovery among marginalized communitieswhy the word "stigma" is too soft when you're talking about addiction and recoverywhat it took for him to personally be able to say "there's no shame in addiction"For parents who may have written off college for their child with substance use issues, this is an absolute must-listen show. You'll walk away with encouragement, hope, reassurance, and most of all, an appreciation for the dedication of those who work in collegiate recovery and the gift they're providing to kids who may not have pursued their eduction after treatment. You can find the show notes here.If you're a mom who needs strength and support while your child is experimenting with or addicted to drugs or recovering from addiction, please join our private, positive online community, The Stream, at www.brendazane.com/thestream.Download my free ebook “HINDSIGHT: 3 Things I Wish I Knew When My Son Was Addicted to Drugs

We at The Recovery House of Worship are going to be addressing this very issue for the next few weeks. We will be getting to the root of why we do what we do. We will be looking at not only our actions but the underlying motivations of those actions. This is a hot topic for many of us, and would be helpful for the loved ones in our lives. So be sure to invite your friends and families as we get together to run to Christ and see His gospel work more clearly than ever before. Edwin,

Hey Family, This Sunday we're going to speak about the key ingredient of every healthy relationship. Every year about this time I do two things: I reflect and I project. Reflect on how last year went and project on what I can change in the future. I think a lot of us go through that in one form or another. One thing that's held true throughout the years is my regular gathering with my brothers and sisters at Recovery House of Worship. I hope this is part of your regular diet of spirituality.

Ron Luce, a board member of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences and President of Ohio Recovery Housing, says “the Holidays” can be a troubling time for those addicted to drugs or alcohol –even those already in recovery. Addiction is often linked with depression, according to Luce, and “the Holidays” can exacerbate emotions in the addict of isolation, shame and feelings associated with causing nothing but problems for family and friends. Those negative feelings can even happen when someone is in “recovery.” Therefore, relapses often occur for those in treatment during this time of year. These relapses occur most often in the first five years of recovery, says Luce. Giving the recovering addict a sense of “community and connection” during this time is especially important. Groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) have been historically instrumental in providing that sense of community and support. However, according to Luce, there are now multiple options for a recovering addict beyond AA. No longer does the treatment community believe that only one type of program is advantageous for recovery. Instead, a buffet table of different types of programs is available and a recovering addict can pick the program(s) best suited for his or her successful rehabilitation. One type of program available for the recovering alcoholic or addict is a “Recovery House.” People live together in a safe, sober, “home-like” environment to support each other as they attempt re-entry into sober life and activities. These types of residences are now available in over 20 states and enhance a recovering addict’s chances for success, according to Luce. For the protection of the recovering addict, regulations are being put in place in many states to guarantee the legitimacy of houses offering these services.

Show Topic:  The House Meeting. Every now and then an attitude creeps into the recovery environment.  This attitude is not conducive to recovery, but aims to ridicule it. Make light of it. Make demands of it. That old sense of entitlement begins to rear its head. The physical environment starts to suffer. Before you know it, instead of having a "Hope" house, it looks and behaves like a dope house. Only that old reliable tool of the TC can correct this: The House Meeting.
