The world of decision-making is now dominated by algorithms and automation. But how much has the AI really changed? Haven't, on some level, humans always thought in algorithmic terms? Kartik Hosanagar is a professor of technology at The Wharton School at The University of Pennsylvania. His book, A Human's Guide to Machine Intelligence: How Algorithms Are Shaping Our Lives and How We Can Stay in Control explores how algorithms and AI are increasingly influencing our daily decisions and society, and proposes ways for individuals and organizations to maintain control in this algorithmic world.Kartik and Greg discuss the integration of AI in decision-making, the differences and similarities of human based algorithmic thinking and AI based algorithmic thinking, the significance of AI literacy, and the future of creativity with AI. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Show Links:Recommended Resources:Herbert A. It's like in a music recommendation system, and Spotify Discover Weekly or any of these other systems where a recommendation comes in; ideally, you want some feedback on did this person like the song or not. And if there's a way to get that feedback, whether you know one way is it's an explicit feedback thumbs up, thumbs down, sometimes it's implicit; they just skipped it, or they didn't finish the song, they just left it halfway through, or something like that. But you need some way to get that feedback, and that helps the system get better over time.At the end of the day, humans shape the future of AI12:43: This view that it's all automation and we'll have mass human replacement by AI, I think, at the end of the day, we shape that outcome. We need to be actively involved in shaping that future where AI is empowering us and augmenting our work. And we design these human-AI systems in a more deliberate manner. On driving trust in algorithmic systems36:08: What drives trust in an algorithmic system shows that transparency and user control are two extremely important variables. Of course, you care about things like how accurate or good that system is. Those things, of course, matter. But transparency and trust are interesting. So, in transparency, the idea that you have a system making decisions for you or about you, but you have no clue about how the system works, is disturbing for people. And we've seen ample evidence that people reject that system.

Today's guest deejay is Alex Haas. I've been a fan of Alex's music since the last century. It feels strange to write that, but it's true. I discovered Alex on his Cypher 7 album, Decoder that he recorded with Jeff Bova. Decoder came in all all-back CD jewel case. Very mysterious and very sexy. Decoder was released on Strata, Bill Laswell's sub-label of Subharmonic Records, and that was all I needed to know in my decision-making process to purchase the album. I was not disappointed. Decoder was as mysterious and sexy as its CD case. The music was minimal, sinuous, and entrancing. I've been listening to Alex's music over the decades. When his album, The Woods, recorded with Michel Banabila and Bill Laswell, popped up on my Spotify Discover Weekly playlist, I immediately invited Alex to guest deejay on Soundwave. Alex's mix is exactly what I expected and delights with music from unexpected sources. You're in for a treat. Before I get out of here, I want to wish everyone happy holidays. I also encourage you to follow Genius and Soul on your favorite podcast app. Genius and Soul is a weekly show featuring jazz, Black classical music, and more, with mixes lovingly selected by our guest deejays. Our first guest deejay will be legendary composer, pianist, singer, and flautist Brian Jackson. Genius and Soul launches on January 1, 2022. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be iu takahashi. See you then! Today's guest deejay is Michael Southard of Triplicate Records. A couple of months ago, Soundwave guest deejay Ishmael Cormack (listen to his mix here) asked for musical recommendations from his followers on Twitter. Ismael got a lot of responses, and I listened to every suggestion on Spotify. If I heard something I liked, I'd invite the musician to guest deejay on Soundwave. Anthéne, for example, appeared on the show back in August. And today's show, of course, features Triplicate Records. I remember back in the 80's listening to the soundtrack to Birdy by Peter Gabriel and wishing some musicians would record music for imaginary soundtracks. Such music existed, but I wasn't aware of it until the following year when I was turned on to Brian Eno's Ambient 4: On Land and Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks. Finding Eno, and musicians like him, was everything I hoped for and more. Over the decades, I've seen more and more record labels dedicated to ambient, modern classical, experimental and instrumental music. 12k comes to mind, as does n5MD and Ultimae Records. Music from Triplicate Records was already popping up on my Spotify Discover Weekly playlist and music I was discovering on Bandcamp. When Triplicate Records was recommended to Ishmael on Twitter, it felt like the universe was telling me to invite them on the show. Triplicate Records is a boutique record label working primarily with instrumental electronic music. They are 100% artist-run, by producers Michael Southard (Time Rival), Bryan Kraft (BVSMV), and George Ernst (Suncastle). Despite the pandemic, they have gained a following with their unique musical tastes, striking artwork, and consistent output. You're going to love today's mix. If you want to hear more from Triplicate Records, listen to their Spotify playlist here. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Oleg Puzan of Line Spectrum. See you then! Today's guest deejay is Sofia Nystrand, AKA Vargkvint. For months, Sofia's music kept appearing on my Spotify Discover Weekly playlists. If I didn't find Sofia's music there, she'd pop up on someone else's playlist. Or I'd find her music on Bandcamp. In fact, Brueder Selke (CEEYS), played Sofia's “Utåt” on their mix for Soundwave a few weeks ago. There's a reason for this, of course. Sofia has that magical ability to trasnport you to a world that is uniquely hers yet utterly familiar though her songs. Sofia deftly weaves folk, contemporary classical, pop, experimental music, and ambient. It's a gorgeous thing to experience and I'm delighted to share her mix with you on today's show. If you'd like to hear more music from Sofia, she is featured on the Realismo Mágico compilation album from piano and coffee records. Some of the artists you'll find on Sofia's mix can also be found on the album (Klangriket, Sjors Mans, Jakob Lindhagen, Alexandra Hamilton-Ayres, Simeon Walker, Ceeys). Sofia has also just released a rework of the first track, “Pomegranate,” by Sergio Diaz de Rojas. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Jonathan Ammons. See you then! Today's guest deejay is Hans-Joachim Roedelius. Last month Roedelius's “Wenn Der Südwind Weht” appeared on my Spotify Discover Weekly playlist. On a lark, I sent Roedelius an email inviting him to guest deejay on Soundwave. Roedelius musician and composer and has performed and recorded with kosmische musik bands Kluster, Cluster , and Harmonia and has a long-spanning solo career. Episode N-N-N-N-NINETEEN of the Musical Taste Society finds us asking, "Are ZZ Top are ever gonna get that trip to the Moon?" John discovers Zamrock through his Spotify Discover Weekly list, while Joseph makes his way through DW playlist sent to him from our listeners and finds it sending him down Memory Lane. Punk rock pioneer Johnny Ramone and Hamish Stuart - possibly the funkiest man to ever come from Tayside -are given the once-over in the Birthdays. John finds us yet another reason to dislike Brian May, while Joseph brings a Top 10 list to the Events section. He knows John loves a list and can't resist. Finally, Joseph gets so excited discussing psychobilly forefathers The Cramps for the MTS Hall Of Fame he can't even read from his notes and talk at the same time. Join your hosts John Gavin and Joseph Goss as they pick through their Spotify Discover Weekly playlists to find out who has another useless cover version to listen to. We also celebrate the birthdays of one-hit wonder Afroman and Patti Scialfa - a bona-fide Rock and Roll Hall of Famer AND wife of Bruce Springsteen. Our event of the week sees plot holes in Tina Turners' biopic and trying to work out what exactly Attitudes criteria is when describing an album as "gay". Joseph spends way too long trying to convince John about the merits of Steve Albini. All this and more on the Musical Taste Society!

This week’s episode brings in Kam Raslan, Faiq Syazwan and Matt Armitage together to talk about the census, Spotify’s Discover Weekly feature and generation dead. Kam began the show with him tracing back his family roots in a small mining village in Wales circa 1911. He would also love to learn the history of the other part of his family that resided in Kuala Kangsar. That would be the job of the census. Which is coming up on the 7th of July 2020. So answer the door, folks! But is this method still relevant when data can be easily retrieved via data mining? Then Faiq shared his realisation that his Spotify Discover Weekly’s playlist isn’t that special and curated after all. This realisation came after stumbling upon The Teeth – Ballad of The Dead Rat. Finally, Matt concluded that the term ‘generation’ is dead because changes are happening too rapidly that the length of time that we use to differentiate generation has become meaningless.
