The Forth Bridges Trail is a five-mile circular route which brings together various points of interest in North and South Queensferry and crosses the Forth Road Bridge. New stops were added onto the route earlier this year, so Mark took a wander along part of it to hear about the area's fascinating history. When you think of Beaver reintroduction sites you probably imagine the Cairngorms, Knapdale or rural Tayside but certainly not the heart of London. A few weeks ago, Rachel went to visit The Ealing Beaver Project where beavers are making their home right beside a retail park! Dr Sean McCormack gave her a tour and explained how they hope the beavers, who have been relocated from Scotland, might help with flooding in the area.At the end of the summer Mark visited Loch Katrine, home to the Steamship Sir Walter Scott. But the Loch is also home to other boats and Mark went to speak to one man who's been restoring his very own steamship. We're joined live by Dr Cat Barlow, project manager with the South of Scotland Golden Eagle Project who tells us about their plans to expand and re-introduce the species to England and Wales following their success in Scotland.Next month, the winners of the BBC's Food and Farming Awards will be unveiled at a ceremony in Glasgow. Out of Doors and Landward have our own category – the BBC Scotland Food Hero award. Over the past few weeks Rachel has been visiting the three finalists, and this week we hear from the Cosaig Growers. Back in 2016, Kate Wieteska and Jake Butcher bought a challenging piece of land on a hill in the north west Highlands and since then they've completely transformed it in order to grow fruit and vegetables. Rachel paid them a visit while they were getting on with some scything. We hear a short Islay folktale recorded on our recent trip to the island which is home to lots of fantastic myths and stories. In this week's Scotland Outdoors podcast we feature the latest instalment of Mark's journey along the Stevenson Way which is based on the novel Kidnapped. We hear an extract where Mark hears about a real event, the Appin Murder of 1752 which is one of the most notorious of its kind in Scottish history.

This week's guest is Angus Soft Fruits' breeding program director, Lucy Wilkins. Angus Soft Fruits sells to the major multiples in UK, food service and wholesale and also exports fruit around the world to Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Angus is launching two revolutionary raspberry varieties: AVA™ Monet and AVA™ Dali - so named because they are, “works of art!” Lucy explains how they represent a "significant breakthrough in raspberry cultivation".With UK growers squeezed between increased challenges for UK growers due to production and labour costs and ever-rising demands from supermarkets, the higher yield and high quality of the new breeds will "enable [Angus's growers] to sell the fruit at a higher price".She discusses trends in customer tastes and their expectations and how Angus Soft Fruits breeding program is aiming to meet these for strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries.Health, wellness and nutrition are big areas of interest as well as environmental impact of food and ethical farming practices, she says, which need to be balanced against demands for cheap, large, tasty fruits available all year round. She discusses how the season, relative production performance for fruits has gone in 2024."We're also looking internationally to see how our varieties can perform in other climates. So we've got trials in Southern Europe and Morocco to sort of see how these varieties could perform in an import perspective, which would obviously allow for year-round production of our Ava berries, which is really exciting and it's a fantastic opportunity for growers around Europe as well as the UK", she says. This year is Angus Soft Fruits 30th anniversary which will be celebrated in its annual conference held in November in Scotland which will feature talks from people from across the industry sharing their insights, updates and tech and what is driving innovation in the industry. "It's just a fantastic opportunity to get the whole team together, all of our growers and just celebrate 30 fantastic years."Lucy discusses her route to her current role, why Tayside is so good for soft fruit growing and what Angus is doing on sustainability, coping with climate change and improving disease resistance and tolerance to help reduce pesticide use."Our Scottish growers have been working with AgriCalc to measure their carbon footprints on their farms since 2023 and they've already reduced their carbon emissions per kilogram of fruit by 28% which is just fantastic" she says, highlighting changes to lighting, and food waste among other measures towards net zero goals. As the new Government continues to bed in, Lucy talks about her support for the six priority areas outlined by the British Berry Growers Association which include measures for seasonal labour, planning, exports and hopes for a 'grower charter'. A creamery which has been producing Stilton since 1780 is due to close its doors with the loss of 60 jobs. Tuxford and Tebbutt in Melton Mowbray is owned by the farmer co-operative Arla, which has been trying to sell the creamery as a going concern. They've blamed the closure on what they say is a decline in the speciality cheese market. Dairy industry analyst Chris Walkland explains what's happened. There's been some debate about whether this wet spring has had an effect on the bee population. Ian Campbell is a spokesperson for the British Bee Keepers Association. He says this has been a challenging year for honey bees. A farmer who switched from intensive cereal production to wildflower meadows, and open access to walkers, says the farm is now just as profitable as when he was feeding people. Chris Skinner runs High Ash Farm just outside Norwich. He says even though he's not producing food, he feels he's still giving people a valuable benefit...and many visitors are happy to donate to support his wildlife work. Anna Hill joined him for a walk in the meadows. Scottish raspberries are famed for their flavour and quality...But disease, labour costs and supermarket prices mean the industry is taking a beating, with some growers pulling out or cutting production. Now the James Hutton Institute is developing varieties and growing techniques which can solve at least some of these problems. Richard Baynes has been to Invergowrie on Tayside to find out more.

'Absurd': Backlash after a man is appointed as Scotland's first period dignity officer The appointment of a man as Scotland's first "period dignity officer" has provoked widespread criticism. Critics say the job should have gone to a woman and former tennis star Martina Navratilova has labelled the appointment of Jason Grant "f****** ridiculous". Mr Grant, a former personal trainer, has been given the job of promoting access to free sanitary products in schools and colleges across the Tay region. The role also includes discussing issues around the menopause. His appointment comes as Scotland becomes the first country in the world to introduce a law to widen access, free of charge, to sanitary products. Mr Grant's job title is Period Dignity Regional Lead Officer, the first role of its kind in Scotland. News of his appointment has prompted criticism on social media and elsewhere. Susan Dalgety, a feminist and columnist for The Scotsman newspaper, told Sky News: "I am astonished that a man has been appointed to be lead on "period dignity" in Tayside. It takes mansplaining to a new level. "Jason has said being a man will help him reduce stigma and that it is time to normalise topics like menstruation and menopause. "Periods are normal life for women, we don't need some bloke in a blood red polo-shirt raising our awareness." Jason Grant's PR representatives said he wasn't available for interview. In an earlier statement announcing his two-year appointment, he was quoted as saying: "I think being a man will help me to break down barriers, reduce stigma and encourage more open discussions. "Although affecting women directly, periods are an issue for everyone. "We'll also raise awareness of the menopause which, although a natural process for women, has wider repercussions in the world of work and family. "It's time to normalise these topics and get real around the subject. "I believe I can make progress by proving this isn't just a female topic." This is just my opinion. Dundee and St Johnstone both got draws away from home at the weekend to preserve the status quo in the Tayside relegation battle. In this week's Courier Talking Football podcast, Jim Spence, Sean Hamilton and Eric Nicolson analyse both clubs' strategies for the Premiership basement head-to-head and consider whether a high risk, high reward approach should trump pragmatism. Also on the agenda are Dundee's game in hand against St Mirren and Nadir Ciftci's worrying form for Saints. Dundee United, meanwhile, are walking a tightrope, with dropping to 10th and rising to fourth both realistic possibilities.
