Not to hype this week's book too much....but Soaliha has confirmed that Candice Chung's new memoir Chinese Parents Don't Say I Love You is one of the best books she has read this year. So, PSA: Go and buy this book, stat. Candice is a writer, editor, and a former restaurant reviewer for The Sun-Herald - and is a founding member of Diversity in Food Media Australia, which supports and promotes underrepresented voices in food media. Her new memoir - already receiving rave reviews - is a story about saying the unsayable with food. ICYMI: here's an excerpt from Soaliha's review over on Missing Perspectives:"When her retired Cantonese parents offer to be her new food buddies, she considers what paths lay in front of her: eating together in that familiar though profoundly pregnant silence so many of us children of immigrants know, or forging ahead and addressing what the silence obscures, even denies. You might have noticed from reading this column that I rarely include memoirs, but I was hooked by Candice Chung's writing three paragraphs into the first page. Earnest and perceptive, she meditates on topics so many of us know shouldn't be taboo, and yet we struggle to talk about. I really enjoy introspective and descriptive writing, and while I haven't finished this book yet, I know it's going to be one that resonates."So, what are you waiting for? Listen to this interview with Candice, then go buy the book (and let us know what you think!).

The inimitable Annabel Crabb joins us for this special spotlight episode where we shine a light on the changing impact of journalism in a shifting media landscape. In a world where truth is increasingly contested, can the fourth estate still be trusted to deliver reliable information which brings us together into some sort of shared reality? Or has our trust in journalism been irrevocably broken by the ‘democratisation' of information - the relentless immediacy of self-selecting delivery platforms - as well as the unabating attacks of all political sides, who too often claim that it's just a front for power or an opinion, or even worse, a home for misinformation. How can we rebuild trust in the news, recognising its limitations while understanding its critical role in a well-functioning society? As to disagree productively, we need a shared reality as our foundation.Annabel CrabbAnnabel Crabb is an Australian political journalist, commentator and television host who is the ABC's chief online political writer. Politics this week was dominated by the aftermath of, and the fallout from, the contentious referendum on the Voice. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese faced pressure from the Opposition to explain what his position was on treaty and truth-telling, the other two parts of the Uluru Statement that outlined the vision for the failed Voice to Parliament. Separately, the conflict in Israel caused tension in Canberra. The parliament passed a motion condemning Hamas' terrorist attacks on Israel, but the Greens sought an amendment that condemned “the war crimes perpetrated by the state of Israel” including the bombing of civilians. They were joined by two independent Teal MPs, Sophie Scamps and Kylea Tink. The amendment failed to pass.
