Talk Club, set up in a Bristol pub seven years ago, offers a space for men to get together and discuss their mental health. That's something too few of us still do, as shown by the horrible statistic that in the UK, a man dies by suicide roughly every 90 minutes – the length of a football match. With this episode recorded during Men's Health Week, and with the World Cup bringing many men together in a highly emotional state, it seemed an appropriate time to sit down with Gavin Thorpe, one of Talk Club's two founders. The clubs have rapidly expanded, to 150 branches across the country. But with suicide still the biggest killer of UK men under 50, the need to talk remains urgent. Why are we men so reluctant to open up about what's getting us down? Are Talk Club's activities moving the needle? And do young men – far more in touch with emotions than their grandads – offer hope?Content warning – this episode, as you might have guessed, contains discussions of suicide and mental ill health. But it's a great chat, and by no means all doom and gloom – hope you enjoy. The Bristol Cable is Bristol's community-owned cooperative newsroom – fiercely independent journalism that puts people before profit. Since 2014, we've been holding power to account through investigative reporting, community campaigns, and democratic media ownership. Because when journalism serves the community, not shareholders, real change becomes possible.Support independent journalism and help us bring more vital conversations to Bristol: become a Bristol Cable member.

Send us a textRemember when Atlanta clubs were all about getting sweaty on the dance floor instead of flexing in VIP sections? The Village Vets take you on a journey through the evolution of ATL's nightlife culture, pinpointing exactly when and how everything changed. Around 2010, clubs prioritized dancing and authentic good times, but by 2013, a seismic shift began transforming the scene into something far more status-driven and expensive. The crew explores how music itself caused this transformation – as Travis Porter's "ass-shaking" anthems gave way to Future's "money and drugs" era, the very soul of club culture morphed with it. Now, you're spending $95 on a single round of shots where once you could just show up ready to dance. "Your money is what talks for you now," they lament, remembering when your dance moves and conversation skills were currency enough.Beyond club culture, the Vets dive into heated debates about Wayne's Carter VI album quality, the complex DDG-Halle Bailey custody situation, and how postpartum issues affect relationships. Their discussion on mental health and immigration reveals surprising personal connections that have shaped their perspectives beyond partisan talking points. The episode wraps with NBA Finals predictions that favor OKC despite Indiana's compelling underdog story. Whether reminiscing about the good old sweaty dance floor days or tackling today's tough topics, the Village Vets bring their trademark unfiltered perspective to everything they touch.Ready to join the conversation? "The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! (aka a "GLT with me CG!")
Send us a textBen Akers never expected to become a Mental Health advocate. But when his childhood best friend Steve died by suicide 10 ago, everything changed. Confronted with the staggering reality that suicide is the biggest killer of men, Akers channeled his grief and advertising background into creating 'Talk Club' – a revolutionary approach to men's mental fitness that's now saving lives across the UK and beyond. At the heart of Talk Club's genius is stunning simplicity: "How are you? Out of 10?" This numerical scale gives men a framework to express their emotional state without struggling with what Akers calls "the foreign language of feelings." Where men typically respond with a reflexive "I'm fine," the number system creates an opening for honesty. "If you're a higher number and regularly a higher number," Akers explains, "you're mentally fit, you're mentally strong, and you're good for everyone around you."From its first meeting at Bristol Beer Factory in April 2019, Talk Club has expanded to 120+ venues nationwide with over 5,000 members. The organization has formed strategic partnerships, including creating Clearhead non-alcoholic beer, allowing men to gather in comfortable spaces without alcohol's potential mental health impacts. Every aspect of Talk Club reflects Akers' design philosophy: make it accessible, remove barriers, and speak directly to men as they are.The movement reframes mental health conversations through the lens of fitness rather than illness. Just as we congratulate someone for going to the gym, Akers wants mental health maintenance celebrated rather than questioned. He applies his personal philosophy – "Does it make you better?" – to every decision, encouraging men to evaluate relationships, work, and habits through this simple yet profound lens. Whether you're struggling personally, concerned about someone in your life, or simply interested in supporting mental fitness, visit talkclub.org today. As Akers proves through his work, sometimes the smallest questions can save the biggest lives.Find out more at talkclub.org or email hello@talkclub.org to get involved, donate, or start your own Talk Club.Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'.
