Say the word wellness and it conjures an instant image in our minds… glowing skin, enviable abs, sludgy looking juice, tasteful muted leisurewear and lots and lots of money. Where we used to have diets and anti-ageing cream, we now have peloton and ashwaghanda gummies and collagen powder. Or we do if we can afford to. So I'm delighted to welcome to The Shift, the award-winning American journalist Amy Larocca, who has written an entire book on the subject, How To Be Well, aptly subtitled ‘finding a way through the self-care epidemic without losing your mind and your money'. I've been a fan of Amy's work for a long time because for 20 years she was the fashion editor of New York magazine and like me is interested in the recent shift from owning the latest it bag to owning the latest it abs. She also wrote a great piece for the New York Times back in 2022 called Welcome to the menopause Gold Rush which I must have shared hundreds of times and will link to in the show notes. Amy joined me to talk about how easy it is to get sucked in by the virtue trap of wellness promise, how suddenly everyone's a frontiers woman, bovine colostrum (yes really), how the industry is sucking in teenage boys and the price of entry to adult womanhood. We also discussed Oprah, HRT, bionic babies biohacking and so much more! * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including How To Be Well by Amy Larocca as well as the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com Learn more about your ad choices.
How do you turn discovery into a dedicated fanbase? In this live-recorded panel from Viva Sounds in Gothenburg, we bring together three perspectives from across the industry with Michelle Paquet (Artist Manager, Lisbon Lux Records), Fredrik Hagström (Artist Marketing Manager, Amuse) and Lisa La Rocca (Director of Operations, Sonic Unyon Records). They discuss artist development, fan engagement and what it truly takes to build a sustainable career today. Hear why live music is becoming a key touchpoint again, why virality is not a long-term strategy and how authenticity ultimately outperforms algorithms. The panel also dives into the importance of timing, clear identity and why it takes more than just a great song to break through in today's crowded landscape. She describes her work as "part of a long tradition in art and photography: to bring to light and find beauty in the hidden, unconscious, or disregarded. As the daughter of emigrants from Mexico and Italy respectively, I strive to reconcile values from my Indigenous roots with my European heritage." Her artistic work is richly entangled with her ecofeminist, total liberation activism. Her book of photographs and creative nonfiction, "Censored Landscapes", which exposes sites of animal agriculture, was published in December 2024 by Lantern Publishing. The book has been widely endorsed, including by previous Sentientism guests Jo-Anne McArthur, Marc Bekoff, Robert Grillo, Jonathan Balcombe and Lisa Kemmerer. In Sentientist Conversations we talk about the most important questions: “what's real?”, “who matters?” and "how can we make a better world?"Sentientism answers those questions with "evidence, reason & compassion for all sentient beings."

Margaret and Amy talk with award-winning journalist and author Amy Larocca, whose new book HOW TO BE WELL takes a deeply researched look at the trillion-dollar wellness industry. From supplements to concierge doctors to SoulCycle-as-religion, Larocca exposes how much of modern “self-care” is really about chasing youth, thinness, and unattainable perfection under a new label: wellness. We cover: The real reason “wellness” exploded—and how it's really just rebranded beauty, fitness, and weight loss Why GLP-1 drugs (like Ozempic and Wegovy) are shifting the cultural conversation on body image How women seeking medical care are often underserved, misdiagnosed, or dismissed—and driven toward alternative wellness spaces as a result Why so much wellness messaging is about “getting back to yourself” The role of class, whiteness, and marketing in wellness culture How to protect the next generation—especially our daughters—from internalizing toxic messages about beauty and body image Here's where you can find Amy Larocca: www.amylarocca.com @amylaroccaauthor on IG Buy HOW TO BE WELL: https://bookshop.org/a/12099/9780525655534 We love the sponsors that make this show possible! Today's episode is a little different—it's a deep dive into nonfiction and the wellness industry with journalist and author Amy Larocca. Amy's new book, How to Be Well, unpacks the cultural obsession with self-optimization and wellness, touching on everything from fashion to functional medicine, detox diets to supplements, and the way our bodies are treated and perceived in society. As someone who was deeply embedded in the wellness and life coaching world in the late aughts (fun fact: my first two podcasts were about personal development), this conversation felt personal and powerful. Amy brings curiosity and compassion as she explores the historical, political, and very personal impacts of wellness culture on women—especially those of us who came of age in the girlboss era.We talk about:The blurred lines between wellness as care and wellness as commerceHow our generation was sold “detoxes” and green powders instead of medical careWhy so much of wellness is rooted in privilege, access, and aspirational marketingWhat happens when social media gurus replace doctorsHow the term "self-care" evolved from political activism to spa-day slogansWhether you're navigating your wellness journey or untangling old beliefs about body image, health, and healing—this episode will hit home. This Book Is for You If…You've ever done a juice cleanse, bought a moon dust supplement, or considered if celery juice could change your life. Or if you just want to understand the cultural forces shaping the wellness movement with a critical but empathetic lens.
On the surface, what the wellness industry is offering feels like an antidote to our fragmented and fast-paced lives. Influencers and companies use words like "mindfulness" or “whole foods” or “self care” to get our stressed out, burnt out buy in. But, somewhere along the line those promises start to morph into luxury services, expensive memberships and supplements you never knew you needed. In her book “How to Be Well” former fashion journalist Amy Larocca explores the blurred line between healing and branding in a $6 trillion dollar industry. We discuss:Why our current wellness craze mirrors 1930s pre-Nazi GermanyHow Abraham Flexner completely changed how we teach medicine in the US for better – and for worseWhy the spiritual and community void left by declining religious participation leads people to look to the wellness industry for bothAmy says what attracts people to the modern fitness class has parallels to religious practices:“So if you look at what happens in ritual religious gatherings… You see a lot of that replicated in a lot of these boutique fitness settings. You have ritual, you have music, you have ecstatic movement, you have charismatic leaders, you have a sermon. And these sermons have increasingly moved away from talk of muffin tops and bikini bodies and losing that whatever it is, to kindness, community, thinking about your place in the world, thinking about taking the energy that you are building up in that room and spreading it forward. ”Relevant LinksBuy Amy's book “How to Be Well: Navigating Our Self-Care Epidemic, One Dubious Cure at a Time”Read this Wikipedia page on Martine Rothblatt's robot replica of her wife BinaCheck out this article on the impact of the Flexner report on US medicineRead the book “McMindfulness” Amy mentions in the episodeSign up for Lamar's SoulCycle classAbout Our GuestAmy Larocca is an award-winning American journalist. Ever wonder why toxic wellness culture has us dropping $80 on serums that don't work while wellness scams rake in billions targeting women who just want to feel better? I used to be that girl—clutching my overpriced celery juice, convinced the next biohacking trend would finally "fix" me, completely oblivious to how the wellness industry profits off our deepest insecurities. What if I told you that aging is not a disease to be cured, and that trillion-dollar industry built on essential oil wellness promises is actually designed to keep you coming back for more? Amy Larocca, award-winning journalist and author of "How to Be Well," is here to blow the lid off why wellness retreats feel like cults and how MLM schemes disguised as self-care are preying on our desire to belong. In today's episode, Amy and I dive deep into the uncomfortable truth about how the wellness industry specifically targets women, turning our natural desire for health and connection into profit margins. We're talking about everything from the psychology behind wellness scams to why "optimizing" ourselves has become another form of perfectionism that's keeping us stuck. If you've ever side-eyed your collagen gummies or wondered why that expensive retreat left you feeling more confused than transformed, this conversation is going to hit different. What You'll Learn in This Episode:Why toxic wellness culture specifically targets women and how to spot the manipulation tactics before you fall for themThe real reason wellness scams are a $3.7 trillion industry—and it's not because the products actually workHow wellness retreats use cult-like psychology to make you feel like you belong (while emptying your wallet)Why MLM schemes disguised as essential oil wellness are preying on women's desire for community and financial freedomThe uncomfortable truth about biohacking trends and whether any of these "optimization" methods are actually helping youHow the wellness industry profits by convincing us that aging is a disease that needs expensive, complicated solutionsWhat Amy Larocca discovered during her deep dive into wellness communities—and why debunking doesn't workThe difference between actual health practices and commodified self-care that keeps you buying but never "fixed"This conversation with Amy hit me right in the gut because honestly, I've been that woman throwing money at wellness promises, hoping the next thing would finally make me feel "optimized." The truth is, we're all craving something real to believe in—but maybe what we're actually looking for isn't found in a $200 supplement or exclusive retreat. What if the real wellness revolution is learning to trust our own bodies and stop outsourcing our intuition to people who profit from our insecurities? If this episode made you question your collagen gummies or side-eye that wellness influencer in your feed, grab Amy's book "How to Be Well," share this episode in your group chat, and let's start having these conversations that actually matter.Buy How To Be Well - Amy Larocca's bookAmy's IG: https://www.instagram.com/amylaroccaauthor/ Be sure to rate, review, and follow this podcast on your player and also, connect with me IRL for more goodness and life-changing stuff.Schedule a FREE podcast clarity call with me - Your future audience is out there. In this heartwarming episode of Reading with Your Kids, host Jed Doherty sits down with two incredible authors who are changing the landscape of children's literature. First up is Rajani LaRocca, a physician & author who's making waves with her powerful new picture book, "Some of Us: A Story of Citizenship in the United States." LaRocca's book is more than just a children's story—it's a celebration of immigration, diversity, and the true meaning of being an American. Drawing from her own experience as a naturalized citizen, she explores how people from different backgrounds contribute to the rich tapestry of American society. The book has already garnered critical acclaim, including three starred trade reviews and an Indie Next Pick. What makes LaRocca's work truly special is her ability to balance her medical career with her passion for writing. She sees both professions as opportunities to connect with people and tell meaningful stories. From addressing book banning controversies to creating narratives that spark important conversations, LaRocca is committed to writing books that matter. The episode also features a fascinating conversation with Etienne Labuschagne, a High Court judge from South Africa who has written "Bedtime for Clever Kids." His collection of stories, inspired by his own grandchildren, showcases the power of storytelling to bridge generations and explore complex topics through a child's perspective. Both authors demonstrate how children's literature can be a powerful tool for understanding the world, promoting empathy, and sparking meaningful conversations between parents and children. Whether you're a parent looking for meaningful books to read with your kids, an educator interested in diverse storytelling, or simply someone who loves a good book, this episode offers something for everyone. It's a reminder that stories have the power to connect us, teach us, and help us understand each other a little better. In this unsettling and unforgettable episode, acclaimed author Eric LaRocca joins host Vincent Midgard to delve into his haunting new novel At Dark I Become Loathsome—a disturbing tale of grief, ritual rebirth, and self-destruction. LaRocca discusses the real-life burial therapy practices that inspired the story, the claustrophobic horror of confronting mortality, and his fascination with the grotesque, both physical and emotional. They explore themes of nihilism, body modification, queer identity, and the allure of writing about what terrifies us most. LaRocca also opens up about his creative process, the challenge of writing extreme material responsibly, and how transgressive fiction can be both cathartic and dangerous. If you've ever wondered what it means to write horror that lingers, this conversation digs deep—sometimes literally.Website: https://ericlarocca.com/Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B01GU8Q9W8?ccs_id=0f22c7d3-e714-4835-b86e-44599d09a02aInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/eric_larocca/?hl=enX: https://x.com/eric_larocca?lang=enFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ericlarocca/
"The one that really surprised me was the organic humane Certified Egg Farm. I thought Humane Certified would at least mean that I would see some chickens running around somewhere, but it looked exactly the [00:00:30] same as any other egg facility. They were just big warehouses. You don't see a chicken anywhere in sight. And then I learned, of course, that, um, you know, the this whole free range, pasture raised terminology doesn't really mean anything." - Isabella La Rocca Gonzalez Isabella LaRocca Gonzalez is an artist, author, and activist. Her work is part of a long tradition in art and photography to bring to light and find beauty in the hidden, unconscious or disregarded. Her most recent book is called Censored Landscapes. It's a long term photographic project that unveils the hidden reality of animal agriculture.

Cybersecurity is more crucial than ever. It's essential that we proactively safeguard our data and recognize that no one is immune to attacks. We are all vulnerable. As malicious actors continually enhance their tactics, we must stay one step ahead by consistently improving our defenses. Today's guest is Vincent LaRocca. Vincent is the CEO of CyberSecOp with the commitment to protecting sensitive data and mitigating cyber threats. With over two decades of experience, Vincent has successfully steered CyberSecOp to become one of the world's fastest growing managed security providers, specializing in cybersecurity assessments, breach management, and risk management consulting. Show Notes: [1:15] - Vincent shares his background and how he found himself working in cybersecurity. [2:40] - Even the experts are vulnerable. Vincent shares an experience he had with fraud at his bank. [4:16] - Cyber threat trends are moving to AI. [6:19] - As consumers, we need to be aware of how AI is using our data and what we give it permission to have access to. [8:19] - AI isn't going anywhere. It will continue to grow and develop. [9:16] - Threat actors are unfortunately usually one step ahead of defenses. They are using AI to exploit vulnerabilities. [11:54] - AI gives threat actors even more reach. The number of incidents and scams are extremely high and will multiply. [13:59] - Small organizations and business owners are hit pretty hard by breaches since they often do not have a cybersecurity team. [16:09] - Vincent shares some of the traits and qualifications that are good to look for in cybersecurity professionals for small businesses. [19:07] - Defenses are built against things that we know about, not things we don't know about. [21:27] - There are things that can be done that are free or more cost-effective. [23:40] - There's no point in putting a fancy lock on the front door if there's nothing protecting the back door. [27:06] - Even if an organization has invested in cybersecurity and knows how to keep data safe, if their partners or vendors do not, it means very little. [28:31] - There are so many breaches that have happened that we don't even know about and our data is out there mixed in with so much more. [30:31] - We are a part of an AI revolution currently and the landscape of AI will be completely different in just a few years. [33:58] - The tools for cybersecurity, including machine learning, are improving every day as well. [37:09] - Don't turn a blind eye and assume you can't afford protection. Isabella La Rocca González is an award-winning artist, author, and activist. Her work is part of a long tradition in art and photography: to bring to light and find beauty in the hidden, unconscious, or disregarded. As the daughter of emigrants from Mexico and Italy, she strives to reconcile values from her Indigenous roots with her European heritage. Her photographs have been exhibited internationally including a solo show at the Center for Photography in Woodstock, NY. Awards for her work include the Ferguson Grant from the Friends of Photography in San Francisco, CA for excellence and commitment to the field of photography. She received her BA in Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania, and her MFA in Photography from Indiana University. Isabella's new book, Censored Landscapes: The Hidden Reality of Farming Animals, is a photographic exploration that tells a story in which the central characters are innocent of any crime and yet are condemned to imprisonment, torture, and death. It's a true story of ecological destruction, of worker exploitation—mostly people of color—and of secretive corporations protected by laws and enriched by government subsidies and lobbies. It is also a story that offers insight and healing. Isabella discusses how the photographs she took after a rescue of thousands of hens in Turlock, California became the inspiration for this project. She and Hope discuss how farming animals is a colonial import, the myth of grass-fed and other humane hoax labels, and the importance of photography to tell a story in a vivid and authentic way. My guest this week is Grammy-nominated producer-engineer-scoring mixer Jason LaRocca, who has recorded and mixed music for major motion pictures, games and television. Known for mixing the score of "The Lord of The Rings: Rings of Power" series, Marvel's "Morbius" and more, Jason recently mixed the Grammy-nominated albums "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" and the "God of War: Ragnarok" soundtrack. He has also recorded and mixed for such top recording artists as Jay-Z, CeeLo Green, Fiona Apple, Schoolboy Q and Serj Tankian, of System of a Down. Jason was guest back on podcast #441 a couple of years ago, but I thought I'd have him back to give us an update about what's going on in television, gaming and film mixing. During the interview we spoke about the enormous number of tracks required to record Sweeny Todd, the differences between mixing a Broadway record and a game soundtrack, whether automation or clip gain is faster, his approach to immersive mixing, mixing trends in film and TV, and much more. I spoke with Jason from his studio in Los Angeles. On the intro I looked at why the vinyl record backlog has decreased, and hit songs that almost didn't make the album.

There is a great deal of attention being devoted to extending the lifespan, but what about the “health span” – the period of our lives during which we are not simply continuing to have a pulse, but rather the period during which we are healthy and productive. THAT's the period we're most interested in extending – and today we have one of the foremost experts on the subject, the head of the Healthspan Lab at Colorado State University – Dr. Tom LaRocca. He and his team study what is happening beneath the surface as we age and how we can utilize the findings to extend that period of health and impact – the period of life I think we all care most about.Thank you for joining us here on the Catalyst 360 podcast, your source for engaging, evidence-based health, wellness & performance insights.
