In this heartwarming episode of Reading with Your Kids, host Jed Doherty sits down with two incredible authors who are changing the landscape of children's literature. First up is Rajani LaRocca, a physician & author who's making waves with her powerful new picture book, "Some of Us: A Story of Citizenship in the United States." LaRocca's book is more than just a children's story—it's a celebration of immigration, diversity, and the true meaning of being an American. Drawing from her own experience as a naturalized citizen, she explores how people from different backgrounds contribute to the rich tapestry of American society. The book has already garnered critical acclaim, including three starred trade reviews and an Indie Next Pick. What makes LaRocca's work truly special is her ability to balance her medical career with her passion for writing. She sees both professions as opportunities to connect with people and tell meaningful stories. From addressing book banning controversies to creating narratives that spark important conversations, LaRocca is committed to writing books that matter. The episode also features a fascinating conversation with Etienne Labuschagne, a High Court judge from South Africa who has written "Bedtime for Clever Kids." His collection of stories, inspired by his own grandchildren, showcases the power of storytelling to bridge generations and explore complex topics through a child's perspective. Both authors demonstrate how children's literature can be a powerful tool for understanding the world, promoting empathy, and sparking meaningful conversations between parents and children. Whether you're a parent looking for meaningful books to read with your kids, an educator interested in diverse storytelling, or simply someone who loves a good book, this episode offers something for everyone. It's a reminder that stories have the power to connect us, teach us, and help us understand each other a little better. "The one that really surprised me was the organic humane Certified Egg Farm. I thought Humane Certified would at least mean that I would see some chickens running around somewhere, but it looked exactly the [00:00:30] same as any other egg facility. They were just big warehouses. You don't see a chicken anywhere in sight. And then I learned, of course, that, um, you know, the this whole free range, pasture raised terminology doesn't really mean anything." - Isabella La Rocca Gonzalez Isabella LaRocca Gonzalez is an artist, author, and activist. Her work is part of a long tradition in art and photography to bring to light and find beauty in the hidden, unconscious or disregarded. Her most recent book is called Censored Landscapes. It's a long term photographic project that unveils the hidden reality of animal agriculture.

Cybersecurity is more crucial than ever. It's essential that we proactively safeguard our data and recognize that no one is immune to attacks. We are all vulnerable. As malicious actors continually enhance their tactics, we must stay one step ahead by consistently improving our defenses. Today's guest is Vincent LaRocca. Vincent is the CEO of CyberSecOp with the commitment to protecting sensitive data and mitigating cyber threats. With over two decades of experience, Vincent has successfully steered CyberSecOp to become one of the world's fastest growing managed security providers, specializing in cybersecurity assessments, breach management, and risk management consulting. Show Notes: [1:15] - Vincent shares his background and how he found himself working in cybersecurity. [2:40] - Even the experts are vulnerable. Vincent shares an experience he had with fraud at his bank. [4:16] - Cyber threat trends are moving to AI. [6:19] - As consumers, we need to be aware of how AI is using our data and what we give it permission to have access to. [8:19] - AI isn't going anywhere. It will continue to grow and develop. [9:16] - Threat actors are unfortunately usually one step ahead of defenses. They are using AI to exploit vulnerabilities. [11:54] - AI gives threat actors even more reach. The number of incidents and scams are extremely high and will multiply. [13:59] - Small organizations and business owners are hit pretty hard by breaches since they often do not have a cybersecurity team. [16:09] - Vincent shares some of the traits and qualifications that are good to look for in cybersecurity professionals for small businesses. [19:07] - Defenses are built against things that we know about, not things we don't know about. [21:27] - There are things that can be done that are free or more cost-effective. [23:40] - There's no point in putting a fancy lock on the front door if there's nothing protecting the back door. [27:06] - Even if an organization has invested in cybersecurity and knows how to keep data safe, if their partners or vendors do not, it means very little. [28:31] - There are so many breaches that have happened that we don't even know about and our data is out there mixed in with so much more. [30:31] - We are a part of an AI revolution currently and the landscape of AI will be completely different in just a few years. [33:58] - The tools for cybersecurity, including machine learning, are improving every day as well. [37:09] - Don't turn a blind eye and assume you can't afford protection. Isabella La Rocca González is an award-winning artist, author, and activist. Her work is part of a long tradition in art and photography: to bring to light and find beauty in the hidden, unconscious, or disregarded. As the daughter of emigrants from Mexico and Italy, she strives to reconcile values from her Indigenous roots with her European heritage. Her photographs have been exhibited internationally including a solo show at the Center for Photography in Woodstock, NY. Awards for her work include the Ferguson Grant from the Friends of Photography in San Francisco, CA for excellence and commitment to the field of photography. She received her BA in Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania, and her MFA in Photography from Indiana University. Isabella's new book, Censored Landscapes: The Hidden Reality of Farming Animals, is a photographic exploration that tells a story in which the central characters are innocent of any crime and yet are condemned to imprisonment, torture, and death. It's a true story of ecological destruction, of worker exploitation—mostly people of color—and of secretive corporations protected by laws and enriched by government subsidies and lobbies. It is also a story that offers insight and healing. Isabella discusses how the photographs she took after a rescue of thousands of hens in Turlock, California became the inspiration for this project. She and Hope discuss how farming animals is a colonial import, the myth of grass-fed and other humane hoax labels, and the importance of photography to tell a story in a vivid and authentic way. Hospitality runs in the family. Alexandria LaRocca, Director of Member Engagement at The Beach Point Club in Mamaroneck, New York, and Matt Assumma, who served at Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, join the podcast. And, they've known each other for years, and we mean for years, since they were kids. Alexandria and Matt are both offspring of well-known and highly regarded club managers, having grown up in the industry. Their respective backgrounds highlight how important both human resources and hospitality are in the private members club industry. Ocean Reef Club And Gaining Membership Through Visitation Matt spent eight years at one of the leading clubs in the country, Ocean Reef. He notes how he worked his way up through the ranks from banqueting and ended up working in the membership department, where he would flag visitors who may have visited the club more than twice in five years, but who had not expressed an interest in gaining membership. Membership plays such an important role at any club through events, such as outings and member guests, but for a iconic club on the tip of Key Largo, perhaps new members can be even more significant. Ocean Reef, although a private club, can be seen as a destination with both a conference center and an inn on property. Matt notes the friction that can be caused between hosting events, attracting new members and the tradition of a small, fishing village which was the dream of its founder and present-day members, according to Assuma. Member Communications LaRocca notes that although email is very strong, different messages require different timings and different avenues of communication. Tennis, food and beverage, and timing of delivery all affect how communications are received by her elite and private membership at Beach Point Club. She realizes that with the numerous clubs in the area, a director of membership really is forced to know the entire brand – not just the activities at the club – but the brand that is the club's identity. That identity separates the club from its many competitors, especially in the Westchester/Fairfield county areas of New York and Connecticut. The Pros and Cons of Living On Property Assumma lived on campus at Ocean Reef for a year before he, for the first time in his life, commuted from a property off campus during his time in the industry. Housing can attract great talent, especially since many may be on J1 or H2B visas, states LaRocca. But, there are times when living on property can be difficult. Your thought process may be that you can never be “off duty” or a member might find you late at night as they might need their clubs for an early-morning flight, as has happened to Assumma. In looking back at their respective careers, it's clear that perhaps the hardest job one might have in the private members club arena is running a dining room. With that said, both these individuals started doing that as teenagers working with their fathers, and food and beverage is clearly a life-long love as well as a wonderful way to learn the club industry from the inside out.
Red, White and Whole by Rajani LaRoccaSome days, Reha wonders just how she can navigate between her mother's expectations that she hold true to what her mom believes is a true Indian girl, and just being an American kid. In middle school, it seems harder than ever to find the right path, even with what to wear to school. But then something happens that makes Reha feel closer to her mother and wondering if she has to chose. Recommended for grades 6 and up.
My guest this week is Grammy-nominated producer-engineer-scoring mixer Jason LaRocca, who has recorded and mixed music for major motion pictures, games and television. Known for mixing the score of "The Lord of The Rings: Rings of Power" series, Marvel's "Morbius" and more, Jason recently mixed the Grammy-nominated albums "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" and the "God of War: Ragnarok" soundtrack. He has also recorded and mixed for such top recording artists as Jay-Z, CeeLo Green, Fiona Apple, Schoolboy Q and Serj Tankian, of System of a Down. Jason was guest back on podcast #441 a couple of years ago, but I thought I'd have him back to give us an update about what's going on in television, gaming and film mixing. During the interview we spoke about the enormous number of tracks required to record Sweeny Todd, the differences between mixing a Broadway record and a game soundtrack, whether automation or clip gain is faster, his approach to immersive mixing, mixing trends in film and TV, and much more. I spoke with Jason from his studio in Los Angeles. On the intro I looked at why the vinyl record backlog has decreased, and hit songs that almost didn't make the album.

There is a great deal of attention being devoted to extending the lifespan, but what about the “health span” – the period of our lives during which we are not simply continuing to have a pulse, but rather the period during which we are healthy and productive. THAT's the period we're most interested in extending – and today we have one of the foremost experts on the subject, the head of the Healthspan Lab at Colorado State University – Dr. Tom LaRocca. He and his team study what is happening beneath the surface as we age and how we can utilize the findings to extend that period of health and impact – the period of life I think we all care most about.Thank you for joining us here on the Catalyst 360 podcast, your source for engaging, evidence-based health, wellness & performance insights. Sebastian La Rocca, who is the Argentina-born chef at the restaurant FYR in my hometown of Columbus, Ohio. It's a Latin American live fire restaurant that opened inside of a new Hilton Columbus Downtown Hotel right on High Street in the middle of the city in late 2022. I have known Sebastian for years from his work in Costa Rica, where he ran the restaurant at the El Mangroove Hotel in Guanacaste, and then opened up an open fire restaurant called Botanika outside of San José, which was one of New Worlder's Best New Restaurants when it opened. When he told me he was moving to Columbus I was completely surprised, but I immediately thought that it was one of the smartest decisions any chef I've ever met has made. I can tell just from my interactions with him over the past year that he is happier. He went to cook in a city that appreciates what he can do and not to win awards and recognition, though he is getting it anyway. It was a decision to move his family there so they could live a happier life. So many young chefs tell me they want to open in New York or somewhere because it is their dream. Really, that's your dream as a cook? Shouldn't it be to make good food that people enjoy and provides you a comfortable life? That can be New York or San Francisco or London or Tokyo, but it doesn't have to be. You can cook from anywhere. There are cities like Columbus everywhere. Why not open in Trujillo, Peru instead of Lima? Or Manaus instead of Sao Paulo? Every cook I know that's moved outside the centralized media market, outside of the industry bubble and found their place has been a thousand times happier and they are cooking better food for it. Fyr, Sebastian's restaurant, has been getting great reviews in local media and he has been bringing a lot of prominent Latin American chefs to Ohio to cook at the restaurant, such as Costa Rica's Pablo Bonilla and Panama's Mario Castrellón. It's kind of weird. These are guys I know from Latin America an have written about a lot that are suddenly in Columbus. It's kind of two worlds colliding for me.I grew up here and went to college here. It's basically all I knew until I was in my 20s. I've talked a lot on this podcast about growing up completely disconnected from where the food I ate was coming from. On the episode with Farmer Lee Jones, who runs Chef's Garden in northern Ohio, I talk about how there weren't any farms around. There were just corn and soy fields you drove past on the highway. And all of the restaurants were chains and concepts. I started writing about food in Ohio when I was 19, I think, and it wasn't really until then that I started questioning things. A culinary movement was just beginning there then, with Jeni's, now a well-known ice cream purveyor, opening in the North Market. There were a handful of fine dining restaurants that were being vocal about supporting local farms, and after I left it just kept kind of evolving. There are really great restaurants there now, both at the high and low end. My old neighborhood is full of Nepalese, Mexican and Salvadoran restaurants, and there has been a lot influence from North Africa and Southeast Asia elsewhere in the city. There are still too many concept restaurants for my taste, but there are more restaurants that are created organically and have creative food with good ingredients and nice drinks to balance it out. It's a very different place from where I grew up and it's because of people like Sebastian moving there and bringing new ideas.Read more at New Worlder.

New York fashion editor Amy Larocca dishes on Ivanka's fashion sense, and feminist rebranding. Originally published September, 2019
Back in 2011, a good friend of mine who was working at the record label Nuclear Blast called me up. I knew it was something super important if she was calling me. When I picked up, without hesitation, she said, “Don! I just heard your new favorite band. They're called Graveyard and their new album is called Hisingen Blues.” After the first listen of the album, I knew she was right. This was a band that was doing something unlike I'd ever heard and I loved it. Twelve years later, here I am, still a massive Graveyard fan and geeking out over their latest (and best) album, 6. It has been nothing less than surreal to watch Graveyard grow from a new band to a band that is now being considered influential and fathers of their movement. I had the pleasure of once again speaking with guitarist Jonatan Larocca-Ramm and it was great to talk to as always. We touched on the writing process during the Covid-19 pandemic, not taking things for granted, and the growing, strengthening bond between the members of the band. Enjoy, y'all!

This episode is the start of a new monthly segment called, "Talkin' Tech" with Danny Lawrence on the MVP Podcast! Co-Host Danny Lawrence sits down with Matt LaRocca of AgencyZoom to talk about the importance of not only having a CRM inside of your agencies but also how important it is that we as insurance professionals need to continue adapting to technology if you want to win the long game! Episode Highlights: Matt discusses the distinction between Agency Management Systems and Customer Relationship Management tools and how Agency Zoom fits into those systems. (4:03) Matt explains the process of establishing an automated sequence for lead follow-up, a critical aspect for both novice agents and larger agencies. (6:54) Matt shares strategies for customizing pipelines in Agency Zoom, featuring modifications for lead sources, stages, and employee assignments. (9:04) Matt delves into the workings of automation within Agency Zoom, discussing automated emails, text messages, and task assignments with agents. (10:52) Matt mentions the continual adaptation of agencies to evolving insurance technology, with fresh companies and quoting systems emerging periodically which proves highly beneficial for agencies as it enhances their competitive edge and boosts task efficiency. (15:56) Key Quotes: “What we have done is to try to simplify that day to day process for the producer and the CSR, by let's just say, setting up a sequence, right? Automation to be sent out from emails, from a text message, to a call, reminders, whatever that may be, we can then add that into a list and say a customized sequence for your agency.” - Matt LaRocca “We can create different types of pipelines, we have pipelines that are already in place. But yeah, once you establish this, it's just more of a click and drag, and really, throughout each stage of our process, it's a very simple process to hear.” - Matt LaRocca “With Agency Zoom we're adapting every two weeks, we have updates that are going on or system every single day.” - Matt LaRocca Resources Mentioned: Matthew LaRocca LinkedIn AgencyZoom Danny Lawrence LinkedIn Reach out to Mitch Gibson
