We are reaching the end of our strand of the Winter Tales here at Hallowed Histories, but we couldn't resist a couple more stories best enjoyed after dark. For the penultimale episode we are drawing again from the anthology Slow Burn Horror. We supported this project from it's Kickstarter inception all the way through to the beautiful book we now have on the shelf. We kicked off the season with One Candle by Kathryn Leigh, and now we revisit this treasure trove again with Within Walls by Georgina Pearsall. It's a remarkable story, full of squirming eeriness and atmosphere, plus it's set in Norwich. Reading it is the multitalented Emma Zadow. Emma is a playwright, actor, writer and all round artist. I met her at Adam Z Robinson's ghost story writing seminar at the National Centre for Writing. Check out Adam's episode on my other podcast, as well as Steph McKenna's episode from the NCW. This has been Hallowed Histories with me, Richard Sheppard, with research and tech support by Dr Linda Sheppard and Stephen L. Parkes. You're using different fabrics and even if you use some of the same fabrics, it would be different outcomes. If you use some of the same shapes, it will look a bit different” – Lisa Woolfork, Stitch Please, Episode #204“Just do it! Just try it! Even if you are scared, like, I was scared to death to start bags, but I just did it. The first one, very questionable, but I did it. And the second part to that, is “Take your time!”. I am doing a bag right now and it's taking me forever. I think Nikki asked about it on one of my Tiktoks. It's fifty million pieces, but I'm not a quitter, so I'm gonna finish that bag. But take your time because you wanna make sure that you grasp whatever concept it is that's telling you to do the bag or the process, and then you wanna make sure it sticks and then that will help you in the end, as far as other bag making.” – Lanae, Stitch Please, Episode #204“Give yourself grace! You're not gonna be out the gate perfect at anything, you're gonna have that first test run. So, give yourself grace and be patient.” – Nikki, Stitch Please, Episode #204“Enjoy the journey! I've been growing my hair for nineteen years, so, same rules apply with bag-making. Do not try to go from “brand new” to “professional” overnight, it ain't gonna happen, plus you're gonna skip learning so many amazing feels. Enjoy the journey, enjoy that first bag you make, enjoy that first wallet you make, enjoy that first hand-bag you make.” – Tanisha, Stitch Please, Episode #204 Resources Mentioned:Necessary Clutch WalletThe “Melesi Tote” sewing techniqueTiktok https://www.tiktok.com/Sew Your Bag https://sewyourbag.com/Etsy https://www.etsy.com/ Stay Connected:YouTube: Black Women StitchInstagram: Black Women StitchFacebook: Stitch Please Podcast Lisa WoolforkInstagram: Lisa WoolforkTwitter: Lisa Woolfork Subscribe to our podcast + download each episode on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. In this episode of The Writing Life, NCW Programme Officer Vicki Maitland speaks with writer, editor and workshop leader Katy Massey about the process of writing real people in memoir. Katy was a journalist for many years before studying for an MA and PhD in Creative Writing. Her memoir, Are We Home Yet? was published in 2020 and praised by Bernardine Evaristo as ‘a gem'. It was shortlisted for the Jhalak Prize and the Portico Prize. In addition, her work has been widely anthologised, including Common People edited by Kit de Waal, The Place for Me, and speculative collection Glimpse. Her first novel All Us Sinners, an unusual take on the crime genre, is due to be published by Sphere in January 2024. Together, they discuss how her new self-paced course for NCW, How to Write Real People in Memoir, provides the tools you need to think of yourself as the main character in your story: from creating distinct voices in your narrative to discovering the difference between memory, truth and perspective.
In this episode of The Writing Life, NCW Chief Executive Chris Gribble caught up with Claire McGowan to discuss how she got started as a writer, her route(s) into publishing and how she's maintained and developed a career in writing across a range of genres and over a lengthy period of time. Claire McGowan published her first novel in 2012, and has followed it up with many others in the crime fiction genre and also in women's fiction (writing as Eva Woods). She has had four radio plays broadcast on the BBC, and her thrillers What You Did and The Other Wife were both number-one bestsellers. She ran the UK's first MA in crime writing for five years, and regularly teaches and talks about writing. Her first non-fiction project, the true-crime book The Vanishing Triangle, was released in 2021. She also writes scripts and has several projects in development for TV. Together, they discuss how Claire's teaching work has developed across her writing career and how her new course for NCW distils a lot of what she's learned about the many different ways and means of creating suspense in your writing: from character to landscape, to plot to style. Claire's self-paced online course 'How to Create Suspense in Fiction' will launch on the NCW website on Monday 7 August.

Richard Peachey from an organization called Neurodiversity Celebration Week (NCW). Richard is the NCW coordinator and his work involves organizing events, updating the website, and working with NCW partners from Lexxic which is a top UK neurodiversity organization. NCW was founded in 2018 by Sienna who is also neurodivergent. She wanted to start a social movement aimed at changing the narrative from the medical model. This is particularly important because of the language used to describe neurodiversity including words like disorder, disability, or deficiency. The term "Neurodiversity" was coined by Judy Singer.Celebrating neurodiversity is a matter of pride as much as it is done to reveal the work required in this space. Scientific research puts neurodiversity at approximately 15 to 20% of the population and with the disparity surrounding neurodiverse folks, there is a need to change the narrative. Interestingly, lots of people who are neurodivergent do not keep full-time jobs; this is why they are likely to run their companies instead. NCW focuses a lot on education and now there is an inclination toward the justice system because there is a higher percentage of neurodivergent prisoners compared to their percentage in the world as a whole. From the 13th of March, Monday morning, NC Week kicks off with conversations on the importance of celebrating neurodiversity including a panel on adapting to neurodiversity in the workplace. One of these panels will discuss the benefits of neurodiversity and the second will discuss creating a neuro-inclusive culture which is about identifying tools and working environments that help people function seamlessly. Also, there will be panels on education; creating a neuro-inclusive classroom, and supporting neurodivergent learners. Research has shown that neurodivergent workers were 42 percent more effective than neurotypical graduates. This month, we discuss revision. To help us understand how, when and why writers should revise, rewrite and redraft our work, we speak to writer and NCW course tutor, Lynne Bryan. We discuss the importance of revising one's work, how revision is different for different types writer, when to do what kind of revision, and the role of third-party feedback. This is a great discussion for anyone doing creative writing. Lynne received her MA in Creative Writing in 1985. Her first book - Envy At The Cheese Handout - was a collection of short stories back in 1995. Two novels, Gorgeous and Like Rabbits followed in 1999 and 2002. She's co-edited six anthologies of short prose, her work has been broadcast on Radio 4 and her story – ‘A Regular Thing' – was made into an award-winning short film in Denmark. Needless to say, Lynne knows her stuff, so this is an invaluable discussion for anyone who writes.
