So many of us go through life feeling we're missing something important – an idea or practice that will help mold us into our best selves. It's possible to go our entire lives without even knowing what we're looking for. But sometimes, the universe seems to put exactly what we need right before us.My guest today, Taylor Hunt, was only months sober when he began praying about that missing piece. And when it was finally offered to him (in a most unusual way), he rejected it over and over again. On today's episode, Taylor tells us the incredible story of how he finally came to accept the practice that would save his life and give purpose to hundreds of others in recovery: Ashtanga yoga.Taylor has been in recovery for 17 years now, but when he first began yoga, he was only a few months sober, desperately trying to build a healthy life. Since then, he has become a lifelong advocate of the benefits of the practice, especially for those in recovery. On this episode, we discuss:The almost supernatural way yoga found its way into his lifeThe common problem yoga can relieve for young people struggling with anxiety and substance misuseThe positive domino effect of consistent yoga practiceYoga's role in the lives of parents with kids misusing substancesResources:The Partnership to End Addiction: www.drugfree.org/get-supportThe Body Keeps the Score (Bessel van der Kolk)www.taylorhuntyoga.comA Way From Darkness - Taylor's bookTrini Foundation - Taylor's nonprofit organizationApply for a scholarshipThe podcast is now part of a nonprofit called Hopestream Community: www.hopestreamcommunity.orgLearn about The Stream, our private online community for moms, at www.thestreamcommunity.comWe now have a new community for dads parenting a child who struggles with substance use and mental health; The Woods: members.thewoodscommunity.orgFind us on Instagram: @hopestreamcommunityDownload my free e-book, HINDSIGHT: Three Things I Wish I Knew When My Son Was Misusing Drugs: www.brendazane.com/hindsightJoin my email list: www.brendazane.com/email

September is National Recovery Month. This national observance has been held every September since 1989, to educate and increase awareness around mental health and substance use disorders. It's also a month to celebrate the people who have recovered and honor their strength in living healthy and rewarding lives. We are reminded of Malcolm X when he wrote in the forward to his autobiography that 'the lurid gossipy details of his misspent youth were not meant to simply entertain but to educate those on the rewards of a spiritual life.' Taylor came on our podcast with great patience as he explains just how different an addict's life is from a “normie.” It's really different. Harmony and Russell share deeply traumatized, addictive personalities, where sobriety was rare in their family. And, strangely enough the family behaviour modeled for them was actually quite different from Taylor; yet, unlike him, when they have a drink, or use substances they likely won't, as Taylor said, “Burn Mysore to the Ground.” We invite you to sit with us today as we explore Taylor's life and ask him about the inspiring work of his non-profit organization, the Trini Foundation, which is dedicated to sharing the life-changing practice of Ashtanga Yoga with those suffering from addiction. Their mission is to provide yoga as a tool to aid in the recovery process and help people who are suffering, maintain long-term sobriety. They partner with treatment centers, recovery programs, and yoga studios nationwide to help offer yoga classes to individuals in early recovery. Harmony will be offering a class on Saturday September 18th in support of the Trini Foundation and their initiative to bring Ashtanga Yoga to those recovering from alcohol and drug addiction. Taylor Hunt is a devoted practitioner and teacher of Ashtanga Yoga. He makes yearly trips to Mysore, India to study under the guidance of his teacher, R. Sharath Jois. In 2013, Taylor was granted Level 2 Authorization to teach and has had the honor of assisting Sharath on several occasions. Taylor is dedicated to sharing the healing practice with others and providing a community where practitioners can find support in their practice and daily lives. Seeking to preserve the traditional method, Taylor teaches daily Mysore classes at Ashtanga Yoga Columbus and offers workshops around the world. To learn more about Taylor’s story and life’s work, please visit www.awayfromdarkness.com and www.trinifoundation.org. PHILOSOPHY Taylors believes Ashtanga yoga is for everyone. Although Ashtanga is a set series of poses, it can be tailored to fit each individual’s needs. He encourages others to find a practice they can commit to and make it a part of their daily routine. Yoga is for transformation; it’s not just about the physical postures. It’s about acceptance and learning how to focus the mind. With dedication, change begins to occur ‐ physically, mentally, and spiritually. It’s important to find a teacher, someone you can listen to that inspires you to work to your full potential. Each day he shows up and leave it all on the mat; he doesn’t hold anything back. After years of practice, he is amazed at how it continues to teach him so much about life. He feels empowered each day when he finishes his practice and has come to realize that nothing is impossible. He feels that as his body became less rigid, so did his mind. He learned to stay present, not take himself so seriously, and to just enjoy life. He has found that happiness comes from within and is a choice that he makes every day.

#024: Daniel Simpson Scott talks to Daniel Simpson, on his life as a yoga philosophy teacher and practitioner. Daniel presents ancient texts for modern times. He is the author of The Truth of Yoga, a comprehensive guide to the historic tradition and texts of yoga for contemporary practitioners.   We'd like to invite you to join our growing Stillpoint Online Ashtanga Yoga and Mindfulness community. We live stream beginner classes, Ashtanga Yoga assisted self practice and guided classes with evening mindfulness sessions over 6 days with Scott Johnson and the Stillpoint teaching faculty. It's a beautiful way to navigate these times...   Daniel Simpson's work is informed by his master's degree in Traditions of Yoga and Meditation (SOAS, University of London), and draws on his earlier experience as a foreign correspondent. He combines scholarly knowledge with humour and insight, making yoga philosophy accessible and relevant to practitioners today. Daniel teaches courses online, at the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies, at Triyoga in London, around the UK and internationally. With two decades of experience, he aims to help students explore their own path. You can find out more about Daniel’s work and courses here. You can also purchase Daniel's book - The Truth of Yoga - here.     The Truth of Yoga - Daniel Simpson   Scott and Daniel have known each other since 2015 and in that time Daniel has become a highly regarded yoga philosophy teacher and academic. In this wide ranging conversation they share insights and stories on the last 15 years of change in the yoga world surrounding how yoga philosophy and history is taught. Daniel also shares personal stories and insights from his own life that compelled him to write his new book - The Truth Of Yoga. In this wide ranging conversation Daniel shares: About his euphoric experience during a silent meditation retreat, which completely transformed his relationship with the world and himself. How this transcendent experience transformed his asana practise into a practise of embodied consciousness, a physical practise for training the mind.  His thoughts on the relationship between hedonism and spirituality.  The connection between Vedic soma rituals and yoga, and the relationship between soma and ayahuasca.  How yoga can become an addiction in itself, and about learning to identify and deal with these patterns.  That the project of yoga was never about experiencing bliss, but an extreme solution for escaping samsara. About his book - The Truth of Yoga, which distills complex ideas into an accessible format His response to the question: ‘What is yoga?’ His previous work as a journalist and his move into academia, and how both have influenced his approach to writing.  Why accuracy is important when presenting historic texts about yoga.  The enduring effect of Yoga Body by Mark Singleton and how it influenced the academic study of physical yoga That he hopes his book ‘The Truth of Yoga’  will be used as a bridge between academic researchers and yoga practitioners.  About the different and contradictory threads of yoga: dual and non-dual, householder and renunciate. How we can maintain traditional aspects in contemporary physical yoga.  About his first trip to India, and his experience of attending the Kumbh Mela in 2001.   How yoga ultimately helped him recognise, understand and deal with his issues with substance abuse. How yoga scholarship is a form of practise, a discipline in itself. How living a contemplative life is all about relationship: how we relate to the moment, relate to ourselves, and relate to others. A moment-by-moment engagement with reality.    Daniel is a breath of fresh air. His knowledge on the philosophy and history of yoga is so deep yet he is able to share it in a beautifully open, simple and understandable way. I loved having this conversation with Daniel and got so much from it. This is a must for people interested in how the teaching of yoga philosophy and history has changed over the past 10 - 15 years.. Taylor has come such a long way in his sobriety and Scott from growing up in an alcoholic family. Their unique perspectives, particularly Taylor on how he has navigated his own recovery, is powerful and honest. In this moving conversation Taylor shares: What it means to be running a Mysore shala during the covid pandemic, and his decision to immediately hold classes online so he could carry on supporting his community About his book – Away from the Darkness, in which he writes about his journey from addiction to health. How he was convinced by his sponsor into taking his second yoga class after finding his first deeply uncomfortable because of everything it brought up. How he heard God speaking to him in savasana after that second class, telling, saying ‘you’re perfect, just the way you are’. He’d been sober for six months, and it was the first time he’d felt compassion and love for himself. He’s practised six days a week ever since. How sobriety rekindled his relationship with God.  The relationship between being a Twelve Step sponsor and an Ashtanga teacher – the elements of coaching, accountability, and support. The daily work involved in staying sober, how he has to show up consistently in the program and on the mat. His reason for practising – that has to show up for sake of sobriety – means it’s life or death for him, as well as for a lot of people that he teaches, which is why he’s so passionate about showing up.  The impact of his addiction on his family. The clarity after suffering he felt when his ex-wife took him for the treatment he needed.  His deep gratitude for the second chance he’s been given That his first Ashtanga teacher was Laruga Glaser, who he practised with every day How he’s seen the practise help people, how it offers hope for escaping our samskaras. His belief in a higher power, whether it’s Jesus, Buddha, Vishnu, Shiva, Moses… they represent the same universal truths and inspire him in the same way, that his practice is like a prayer, a surrender to this higher power. The importance of being open with his children about his addiction. His work with the Trini Foundation, and how Ashtanga can help people in recovery The blessings in his life; his wife and his children That for him, living a contemplative life means showing up, and living a simple, uncomplicated life.   ‘’Talking to Taylor was something I've wanted to do since I started the podcast. I’ve been personally affected by addiction from a young age, through my family, so to talk to Taylor about his recovery and how yoga has helped his sobriety felt deeply important top me. I was so deeply grateful at how honest Taylor was. I hope this helps others feel like they are not alone. Three percent. That’s your chance of recovery, once you’ve stuck a needle in your arm. Where does this story start? Taylor Hunt had a rocky start - alcohol & drugs - to the point that he thought his life was over. But during a short period in detox and a moment of clarity, the choice came to him that he wanted to live. His journey through recovery was not easy. On the 11th step of AA, yoga found him and pulled him in. He had a lot of resistance to his first class, and it brought up a lot, but his sponsor directed him back. As Taylor found his way deeper into yoga, he found that the effort and community held keys to transformation. For someone coming out of addiction where you have no easy path forward, yoga is very encouraging. You can see the progress in front of you with a little bit of dedicated practice. And this is important: to develop the wisdom that small steps lead to change is essential... and transformative to realize you can take other such steps in your life to turn things around, even if the change isn’t always immediately apparent. Yoga has a way of clearing the body -- when your body doesn’t process old experiences, it stores them, like chemicals in your cells. As you heat the body, these are released, and you have to deal with them.  In a supportive environment such as yoga, it helps with recovery. How did this lead to Astanga Yoga Columbus and the Trini Foundation? Taylor opened the Astanga Yoga Columbus studio in 2014 and deliberately built a community which is supportive and an atmosphere that encourages this hard work. Mysore style Astanga Yoga varies from other forms, where it provides students with their own practice, bit by bit. You come in and practice your own routine, as opposed to following in a group. You learn new poses only as you’re ready. Mysore, India But Taylor knew what he had learned could help others struggling with addiction. So he, along with his wife Jess, and teacher Dawn Blevins started the Trini Foundation. The foundation provides training so that yoga teachers can go into recovery facilities to teach yoga for recovering addicts. When people leave their programs, it provides scholarships to Astanga yoga in exchange for their commitment to show up, in order to help support the transition. Through this, they are reaching out and changing lives. As a side note, I came to Taylor’s studio many years ago and can attest to the energy in the room that pulls you forward. My own practice has been in hibernation as I’ve focused on developing other habits -- but what I learned from Taylor is that it’s meant to be a daily practice, and need at least three days a week to work properly.  I set out at the beginning of this year to develop my own understanding of how to make a social impact and set a goal for this podcast to record 25 episodes. I wasn’t sure I was going to make it, but it was really a miracle at the last minute that Taylor was able to connect with me to make this happen. How do you get involved? If you’re in Columbus and struggling with addiction, have a look at Trina foundation. If you’re a yoga teacher, interested in making an impact, take a look. If you’re looking for a cause to donate that can give people the tools they need to radically transform their lives check it out. But I’d also encourage you to try out yoga. It works. To set the stage for you, our conversation takes place at the Green Hotel in Mysore, India. It's probably the quietest place we could find to record and they serve the most amazing cakes - just ask Jeff and my daughter, Meghan who were enjoying theirs during the broadcast! You don't see Jeff and Harmony out in the usual hangout near the Shala. And that's because when they are not practicing in the morning, they are busy being parents to Jediah, their 5 year-old son. That means, while many are hanging out at coconut stands, getting chai and massages, or taking some exotic lessons - they are home, taking care of their son (who had a fever the whole week leading up to this interview), making play dates with the other families here in Mysore, and just trying to keep their family life as normal as possible - considering where we all are. Actually, hanging with them and also Taylor Hunt and his wife Jess and family, it makes this whole Mysore thing seem very reasonable for young families. Sharath makes it very easy as well, giving parents different times to practice and moms, actually, no set time at all - just any time they can come. The conferences are littered with tiny people and sprinkled with the sweet babbles of babies. Makes this mum's heart sing. No doubt, this trip has been as much about seventh series more than any other. And as you listen to the following conversation with Jeff and Harmnoy Lichty, you'll understand why.
