Do you ever feel like you're just going through the motions? Maybe you've gotten caught up in just checking things off your to-do list, not really sure why you're doing them or if they're actually helping you. Well, today I'm sharing about my experience of when the Lord led me away from a season of intentionally exercising and into a season of deep growth and surrender to Him and His ways. As it turns out, over-exercising was a deeper rooted struggle than I realized and God was ready to help me work through it. This story is just one example of how seeking the Lord first in my health has produced results in my life that I didn't even know I needed! He is so good and gracious and I pray as you listen that you can sense it for yourself. So whether or not exercising has been at the front of your mind as part of your health journey to be working on, this episode is for you! My special guest, Sheri Thompson, the HOPE coach, joined me in a conversation to talk about how inner healing and emotional healing play a part in overcoming some struggles of living healthy. She shares her personal testimony of coming to the Lord, walking through her own healing, and how that is still playing a part in her own health journey. Want to know the secret to consistently making your healthiest choices? Ready to stop dieting and just feel freedom around food? If you're ready to stop feeling like your emotions are influencing your decisions too much? Then this episode is for you! I can't wait to share about this topic of mindfulness because it is near and dear to my heart and a huge part of my journey to living as my healthiest self in true confidence. So, if you find yourself going going going all the time, stressed to the max at moments, or triggered for who knows what reason…. Or if you tend to go for the sweet or salty snacks, or those addictive drinks like coke or pepsi because you can't help yourself or that's your go to in the afternoons… There's a chance you're not in the habit of living mindfully yet… and I say that in the most loving and understanding way possible! Because trust me, I've been there! I know what it's like to suddenly yell at your kids for no reason, feel guilty about it, but then move on before you've actually figured out why you did it in the first place. Then you watch the cycle repeat itself way sooner than you'd want. I know what it's like to go straight to the tub of ice cream or bag of chips at the end of a long day and hope that whatever caused your stress and exhaustion that day will just magically disappear the next day because in the moment that food is helping you feel better about life. What I learned though, is that if you don't take the time to sit in those feelings, to dig deeper to a core issue, then the actions you want to stop happening will never really stop happening. You'll keep yelling when you don't want to, you'll keep eating all the foods you don't want to when you don't want to be eating them. You'll feel like your emotions and these “bad” choices are controlling you rather than the other way around. And this is where mindfulness comes in. Because I think so often what happens is that you are stuck in this cycle you don't want to be in but don't see a way out in those moments because… stress, kids fighting, dirty dishes, laundry that needs folded, bathrooms that need cleaned and all the things right? It's so much easier to just react in that moment and do what you've always done instead of taking a minute to slow down and choose a response that's likely different from your instinct. While mindfulness can be an amazing tool for many things in your life, today I'm going to give the basics on what mindfulness is, why it matters to you, and then talk about how you can use it when you feel like your food choices are not the greatest, or not what you want them to be at least. Have you ever felt like there was something in regards to your health that just had a hold on you? Like no matter how hard you tried to let it go, you just couldn't? Do you wonder if you'll ever be able to actually do the thing you want to do and stop doing the thing you don't want to do? For example, I have a history of sneaking into the pantry while my kids are playing and eating all of their chocolate from various holidays throughout the year. I can't seem to help myself. When it's there, it's like it's calling my name. I've also been known to watch TV for hours on end, obsessing over when the newest episodes are coming out so that I can somehow escape my own reality in exchange for the one portrayed so unrealistically on that screen. Doing those things was not even ever the worst part for me. It was worse when I knew I didn't want to be doing it, when I tried so hard to stop but gave in and gave up. I found myself falling into a cycle of shame and guilt, knowing I should be able to do better and not being able to. But, even after experiencing it over and over I still didn't know what to do. I didn't know how to break the cycle. And God. Today I'm sharing some personal testimony and walking through what it looks like to invite God into the moments of struggle, the moments of doing what you know you don't want to do and feeling that shame. Then I'm going to share a process you can use to discover and break free from the things you feel are holding back in your health or keeping you stuck in this cycle of shame. This is definitely a truth in love episode on a topic that is near and dear to my heart and a theme of my health story. Do you want to stop worrying about things in the future? Are you ready to let go of the control you're holding on to? Do you desire to live with less anxiety? See, worry and anxiety can show up in many different ways. It might look like controlling things like your food and exercise because you don't feel like you can control anything else. It might look like going to different foods, drinks, substances, to cope with the emotions that you just don't really know how to cope with otherwise. But the truth is, your stress, worry and anxiety are revealing something to you.The question becomes: Are you listening to it or are you doing everything you can to ignore it and not deal with it? I have a special guest for you today, Elyse, who I brought on to talk about something that I believe can be very crucial to our ability to live healthy BUT that there is still a lot of confusion around, for myself included. And that is low-tox living or learning to minimize the toxic load on our bodies. Now she shares more details about what that means but if you're getting ready to turn this off because you think this doesn't apply to you or it'll be way to overwhelming, let me share this one thing first: One of the things that she shared that encouraged me as I was thinking about all that she shared was this: It's not about being perfect or shaming anyone for what they're doing but it is about knowing better so you can do better. It's about awareness and then taking one step at a time to change one thing at a time. So remember as you're listening that you have to simply start where you are with what you CAN do and grow from there. Ask yourself what your health priority is right now: is it gut health, your hormone balance and cycle health, is it weight loss, is it mental health, is it sleep or rest… then start there by maybe investigating what toxins are involved in those areas. Elyse shares her belief that this is just one more way that you can put your health first as a mom in a way that sets your kids up for success in their health as well. That being said, this may not be where you are at all right now, you may have zero capacity to think about this and that's fine. BUT I wanted to share still for the moms that are listening, where they've tried all the other things but have some chronic issues where reducing toxins may be just the solution that they need. My prayer is that by listening to this you are able to begin to understand that our bodies are giving us warning signs that something is wrong but because we've learned to ignore them for so long we often don't investigate the actual cause and look for a solution. Your solution may be to begin a low tox journey, it may to go to your doctor or see a therapist, it may be to begin working with a coach like myself to help you overcome to the mindset and spiritual blocks that you've had to making the healthy choices you know you need to be making when it comes to your diet or exercising. Like Elyse shares, it's about awareness and learning to listen to our bodies and asking why they may be telling us what they're telling us. Do you struggle to find exercise you enjoy? Are you having a hard time sticking to an exercise plan that works for you? Do you feel overwhelmed by where to begin? That's okay! Getting in shape (or back in shape) is on a lot of people's to-do list but it can be a lot to think about. I want to try and break it down simply today and give you some ideas of where you can start today, even if you've tried and failed countless times before. As you probably know, exercise is a big part of taking care of your physical health, and really your mental health too. I discovered over the holiday break while my kids were home just how much I actually need my exercise time whether at the gym or outside running or biking. I wasn't able to get away much from my children which was a blessing BUT my introverted side needed my me time and I think I had been taking it for granted. All that to say, having exercise as a regular part of your routine is so beneficial, probably more than you can imagine! I want to share today about three basic types of exercise and why they are beneficial as well as some mindset shifts, ways to find accountability and my #1 rule of thumb for sticking to your routine!
