Seth does his best circus barker impression to start off a chapter that refuses to stay on the rails. Valan Luca's headcanon background gets new chapters, Aludra gets a lot of love, we debate if RJ might have watched reality TV, and Aradia gets rudely awakened to an incorrect headcanon they've carried for years. Jim Toomey is an American cartoonist. His daily comic strip, Sherman's Lagoon, combines his lifelong passion for art and the sea and has been syndicated to over 150 newspapers in 20 countries and six languages. In partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme, Jim has repurposed his cartooning skills into animation and created a series of short films on ocean conservation. He is the author of Family Afloat: Two Years Sailing the World with Two Kids and Two Captains, which chronicles the 22-month sailing odyssey he took with his wife, Valerie, visiting 32 countries, crossing an ocean, and homeschooling their two children along the way. Jim joins me today to describe his two-year sailing adventure with his family and the unique joys of self-determined travel. You'll hear how the adventure brought his family closer together and changed his children. He recounts his experience diving in the Gulf of Mexico in an Alvin submersible and the wonderful sights he has seen underwater. You'll also learn the value of boredom and how to tackle the challenge of “going before you know.” “Your whole life revolves around setting your anchor well when you live in a sailboat, and we learned the hard way that it wasn't an easy thing to do.” - Jim Toomey This week on Kathy Sullivan Explores: The event that led to Jim and his family going on their two-year sailing adventure Lining up and anchoring boats and the difference between day sailing and extended cruising How the two-year sailing adventure changed Jim's children and brought the family together Being bored and being forced to be resourceful Weathering weather changes and storms over the Mediterranean Sea The value of having a better Plan B Avoiding crises by recognizing—and avoiding—the start of a cascade of problems The bosun's chair and the value of developing mastery in the real world Jim's experience diving with an Alvin submersible How flying over the Bahamas inspired Jim to create Sherman's Lagoon The two ways to fail a procedure The watchkeeping system and Jim's next adventures Our Favorite Quotes: “The learning curve in sailing is long and shallow: you can learn the basics in a day, but, like a lot of things, it takes a lifetime to learn the subtleties.” - Jim Toomey “You'll always feel like you're climbing a summit and you'll never feel like you're at the top. If you wait until you're at the top, you will never go—you have to make the decision to make this voyage.” - Jim Toomey Related Content: 075 | Sherman's Lagoon and the Art of Cartooning with Jim Toomey 015 | Kathy Sullivan Explores… Mid-Ocean Ridges and Interesting Deep Sea Creatures with Cindy Van Dover Connect with Jim Toomey: Jim Toomey Website Sherman's Lagoon Book: Family Afloat: Two Years Sailing the World with Two Kids and Two Captains Spaceship Not Required I'm Kathy Sullivan, the only person to have walked in space and gone to the deepest point in the ocean. In this episode we reconnect with our friend 'Sherman's Lagoon' creator Jim Toomey to talk about his new book, ‘Family Afloat – Two Years Sailing the World with Two Kids and Two Captains.' Along with a bit of history of his popular shark-based cartoon strip, Jim shares some of the rollicking, inspiring and even frightening moments he and his family (and two hamsters) experienced sailing the Med, the Caribbean and crossing the Atlantic. It's a whale of a tale that of course includes a whale encounter.Rising Tide, the Ocean Podcast is co-hosted by Blue Frontier's David Helvarg and the Inland Ocean Coalition's Vicki Nichols-Goldstein. This week I I deviate away from cruising sailing to delve into the world of commercial shipping with a discussion with Valeriia Sulima Before the interview Valeriia a shared this information with me: "Bullet points as promised about myself: - I was born in the industrial city of eastern part of Ukraine called Dnepropetrovsk. No one from my family had any connection to the sea or the shipping industry. - I studied in Kiev, then I moved to Moscow where I pursued a law degree and simultaneously studied another legal program in Ukraine (distanced education). I did my masters in London and Moscow. In total I have 4 diplomas (2 bachelor degrees and 2 master degrees). As you can see I didn't follow the career path of a lawyer. - My first acquaintance with the shipping started with the favourite book of my father called "Two Captains" written by Veniamin Kaverin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Two_Captains) and continued with numerous internships in London. - I came to Hamburg in 2014 for the internship at the Tribunal of the Law of the Sea. - 2015 started to work for the exclusive agent of the Portuguese Registry (Madeira) called European Mar GmbH. Last position Sales Representative. - Aug 2019 joined a startup called Closelink (platform for purchasing marine lubricants, matching suppliers with shipowners) as Business Development Manager for Mediterranean and Russian speaking countries. - In 2019 became a president of Youngship Hamburg, an NGO dedicated to building networks and sharing knowledge among young maritime professionals (https://www.linkedin.com/company/youngship-hamburg). - Aug 2020 working in a business development team of a German marine insurance broker - Döhle Assekuranzkontor. My responsibilities involve expansion of the customer portfolio and creation of social media marketing strategy. - About me: Ballroom dancer (winner of the World Championship in Beijing in 2010), marathon runner (Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris in 2017, 42.195 km), fine art auction’s alumnus (Christie’s Art Business School in 2019), street art hunter and podcasts lover." When Brendan Rodgers took the Celtic job he was advised to jettison Scott Brown. Instead, Brendan invited him to his London home where they chatted about what behaviour he expected from a captain, and also how he could incorporate ‘Broonie' in a different role. Despite the relatively advanced stage in his career, Scott transformed his attitude and style of play, and coach and skipper lifted trophy after trophy in Glasgow. When Brendan took over at Leicester, he again forged a crucial relationship with the incumbent captain, Wes Morgan, and there's great stuff about Leicester and England talents James Maddison and Ben Chilwell. Brendan also reflects on why Philippe Coutinho was adored at Liverpool but failed to hit the ground running at Barcelona. Finally, there's a moving testament on how Brendan considers himself duty-bound to help preserve the legacy and vision of beloved Leicester owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, who died in such tragic circumstances in 2018. On today's episode we're going to be discussing why two Indian cricket captains are in the news. First, Indian Men's Cricket captain Virat Kohli led India in the 257-run win over West Indies to became the most successful Test captain of the nation. Daksh Panwar from the sports desk explains why this record is significant, whether it will put the rumors plaguing Kohli's captainship to rest and how his legacy differs from that of former Captain MS Dhoni. Next, Mithali Raj, former T20 Internationals captain of the Indian women's cricket team and current captain of tests and ODI, announced yesterday that she will be retiring from the T20 Internationals. Nihal Koshe from the sports desk dissects why this was a long time coming and Raj's contribution to women's cricket in India.

From Altair IV to Talos IV. Star Trek’s original unaired pilot, “The Cage,” established the template for much of what was to come. But that episode was, itself, heavily influenced by an earlier work of science fiction, the 1956 film Forbidden Planet. Stylistic similarities between the two works abound, but there is a deeper link as well: both stories concern a highly advanced alien race whose incredible mental abilities have brought about societal collapse. In this episode of Primitive Culture, hosts Duncan Barrett and Clara Cook look at the connections between Forbidden Planet and “The Cage,” focusing on the character of Christopher Pike, captain of the USS Enterprise before Kirk. With the return of Pike and his first officer, Number One, in Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery, we also consider the popular longevity of these barely glimpsed characters and how their presentation has changed over the course of half a century. David Mack: Desperate Hours. A new Star Trek series is a huge deal to Trek fandom. It's a pretty rare occurrence, and what's even rarer is a first novel that looks and feels anything like the actual show! But thanks to Discovery writer and tie-in guru Kirsten Beyer, the novels and the show are linked together like never before, and we as fans get to read about the adventures of Discovery at almost the same instant the show hits screens! In this episode of Literary Treks, hosts Bruce Gibson and Dan Gunther welcome author David Mack to talk about his new Discovery novel, Desperate Hours. We discuss the process of collaboration with Discovery's writers, Captain Pike's devotion to duty, Enterprise vs. Shenzhou, the Shenzhou's bridge crew, comparisons to the Vanguard series, Spock and Burnham, the look and feel of the universe, the book's non-canon status, and finish up with what David Mack has on the horizon. In the news segment, we judge the covers of the upcoming Titan: Fortune of War, and Deep Space Nine: I, the Constable. We first fire off a few mini reviews. The first game discussed is Vast: The Crystal Caverns, then we discuss Nathan's sadness over missing out on Captain Sonar. Then we discuss the dirty little secrets of playing with house rules. Is your favorite space on the Monopoly board Free Parking? Do you enforce certain variable rules when you play a game, in the rulebook or not? Two Captains in Firefly? Is this madness? Listen to find out.

Two North Carolina Watermen: One a talented captain, but enslaved and badly treated. The other a Naval Officer who had his own set of challenges as he served first the United States and then the Confederacy. Nobody could bring these two together in the same book.except Bland Simpson with his book Two Captains from Carolina, next.
