They survived relegation and won the Premier League in the following season.  3. Jamie Vardy has a story of his own. 4. They lost their owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha recently but their son's involvement during the FA Cup was something to behold and truly the beauty of everything that club football stands for. The Michael Anthony Show

In this week's episode, The Michael Anthony Show is joined by former Manchester United defender Danny Simpson. Having failed to make the grade at his boyhood club, Simpson's fascinating career saw him ply his trade at numerous clubs around England. Although successful stints at clubs like Newcastle and QPR portrayed the Eccles' native's obvious quality and ever present desire to win games as learned in the famed United academy, the void left by departing a team that saw him rub shoulders with the likes of Rooney, Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez seemed like one that would never be filled. Approaching what many deemed to be the tail end of his career, Simpson made his way to the King Power Stadium and with the club narrowly avoiding relegation under Nigel Pearson in his first season with the foxes, new manager Claudio Ranieri entered the fold in 2015. The Italian didn't hesitate to let Simpson know that he was far from in his plans and having spent the first eight weeks of the now iconic 2015/2016 season playing with the kids, the seemingly washed up right back seemed to be falling by the wayside of an underwhelming career. The 'Tinkerman' Ranieri had a vision however, and after a meeting with Simpson in which the wiley Italian admitted his shortcomings in analysing the Mancunian, the world of Danny Simpson, just like the beautiful game as a whole, would never be the same again. Leicester, in what will perhaps always be the most ridiculous sporting story of all time, became champions of England. As opposed to lifting the famous trophy in front of an adoring Stretford End, Simpson's moment came alongside teammates considered finished, not good enough. In an era of one hundred million pound players, the foxes ran England with a twenty eight million pound team. In a feat so unlikely that it undoubtedly left the realm of sport, this group of footballers changed the world. In a revealing episode, Danny Simpson revisits this period and also opens up on other aspects of his unique career. Working under Sir Alex Fergsuon, his views on his good friend Ravel Morrison, the benefits of knowing Ronaldo, player power, social media and his spat with Jamie Carragher are all discussed during this open conversation, as the uncapped right back shares his views on the current Manchester United set up and remembers the tragic helicopter crash of 2018 involving Leicester owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha. Available now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and other podcast platforms. MA Show.Support the show (https://open.spotify.com/show/0sP68DtD7qCl4Rs2wGKJD4)

When Brendan Rodgers took the Celtic job he was advised to jettison Scott Brown. Instead, Brendan invited him to his London home where they chatted about what behaviour he expected from a captain, and also how he could incorporate ‘Broonie' in a different role. Despite the relatively advanced stage in his career, Scott transformed his attitude and style of play, and coach and skipper lifted trophy after trophy in Glasgow. When Brendan took over at Leicester, he again forged a crucial relationship with the incumbent captain, Wes Morgan, and there's great stuff about Leicester and England talents James Maddison and Ben Chilwell. Brendan also reflects on why Philippe Coutinho was adored at Liverpool but failed to hit the ground running at Barcelona. Finally, there's a moving testament on how Brendan considers himself duty-bound to help preserve the legacy and vision of beloved Leicester owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, who died in such tragic circumstances in 2018. A week ago, Leicester City owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha was one of five people killed when his helicopter crashed shortly after taking off from the King Power stadium. Nusara Suknamai, Kaveporn Punpare, pilot Eric Swaffer and his partner, Izabela Roza Lechowicz, also died in the crash. Vichai's funeral will take place in the Thailand capital, Bangkok, on Saturday, whilst Leicester will play Cardiff City in the Premier League. Both teams will wear black armbands and a minute's silence will be held before the match as a mark of respect. We hear about the impact Vichai's success with Leicester City had on football in Thailand and how the Leicester players will want to win to honour his memory. Gender equality in sport is a debate that won't go away. Just over a week ago, the route for next summer's Tour de France was revealed. It's considered the pinnacle of men's road cycling - but there is no equivalent race for female riders. This summer, Dutch cyclist Annemiek Van Vleuten won La Course, a mountainous ride which incorporated some of the men's Tour route - but which lasted just one day compared to the men's three weeks. Former cyclist Kathryn Bertine helped found the campaign group Le Tour Entier to press the case for a women's Tour. She told me why she feels more needs to be done by the organisers, the Amaury Sport Organisation. Every young aspiring footballer dreams of taking to the field for one of the world's biggest teams. Cherno Samba was no different. Aged six, he travelled 3000 miles on his own from Gambia to start a new life with his mother and brother in South London. Picked up by Millwall as a young boy, he played for England at youth level and as a prolific goalscorer, gained cult status among gamers around the world for his exploits on the computer game Championship Manager. A move to Liverpool seemed on the cards but ultimately didn't happen. Now embarking on a coaching career, he's also written his autobiography - which includes reflections on the move that didn't come to fruition. South Africa play England on Saturday, as rugby's Autumn internationals get underway. In June this year, the Springboks' Siya Kolisi made history when he led the players out as the country's first black Test match captain against England in Johannesburg. And he'll be entrusted with that honour again at Twickneham. South African sports reporter Philasande Sixaba says Kolisi's appointment as captain has helped bring unity to a country that is still divided. It's nearly 10 years since the Miracle of Hudson River, when, back in January 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 was forced to make an emergency landing on the Hudson River in New York. A flock of geese had collided with the plane's two engines, causing a fire and pilot Chesley Sullenberger successfully landed the plane on water. All 155 people on-board miraculously survived. Sullenberger, known as Sully, was hailed a national hero but another man whose role in the incident wasn't as widely highlighted, was Patrick Harten, the air traffic controller who helped guide the plane to safety. He's running the New York Marathon this Sunday - and Sully will be waiting at the finishing line. Patrick says running helped him cope with post-traumatic stress syndrome and believes the marathon is the perfect way to celebrate the 10th anniversary. Rebecca Wardell is an ex-heptathlete Olympian who competed in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. What started as some idle chat while climbing mountain passes on her bike with friends in Switzerland, soon turned into a reality. Rebecca, along with Olympic rower Emma Twigg and Sarah Van Ballekom quit their jobs at the International Olympic Committee and set off from Switzerland back in April to cycle 'The Long Way Home', to New Zealand. Emma has since returned to New Zealand to try and qualify for her fourth Olympics in rowing, but Rebecca is now half way through her journey home. She tells Sportshour the strangest places where she's slept along the way and how she's had to borrow fuel from motorcyclists so they can cook on a stove. SportsPro editor-at-large Eoin Connolly talks to print editor Michael Long, freshly returned from the Sportel Monaco media convention, about a chaotic and traumatic week in the sports industry. There are reflections on the contribution of the tragically departed Leicester City owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, Fifa's latest machinations around its Club World Cup plans and the examinations of Saudi state money in international sport after the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and the small supporting role of soccer stars in the election of far-right candidate Jair Bolsanaro as president of Brazil. Elsewhere in a packed pod there's a review of the MLB World Series and a step-change at LA 2028, while NFL EVP of international Mark Waller discussed the league's experiences in London this year and its ambitions for Mexico, China and Germany.

This week I talked with Playmakers FC Podcast host, and Prost Amerika writer, Conor Dunford. We spoke just after a disappointing draw at home to Newcastle. The 5th consecutive match in which Saints failed to score. A match where the team denied him press access and dropped points to the side entering the day on the bottom of the table. It was, in part due to other circumstances in my life at the time, a hard podcast to record. And, none of it matters. Not the result, not Saints’ table position. Nothing. We recorded all of this before he or I knew anything of the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of 5 people after Leicester City’s draw at home to West Ham. It put things into perspective, but that perspective doesn’t exactly show up on the podcast, and I just want to be very clear that we recorded the podcast without any knowledge of the crash. Since then, I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to take my dad and my so to game 5 of the World Series, where the Red Sox clinched the title over the Dodgers. My son and my dad are both huge Dodger fans. He and I spent a lot of time in Dodger Stadium when I was a kid, so to be able to take him there for the pinnacle of the sport was truly special. To have my son be a part of it as well, and with the reminder that life is short and fragile fresh on my mind, I can say it was one of the best experiences of my life. Perspective is important. To the family of Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, and the supporters of Leicester City, and to all the people that are hurting from a loss, I’m sorry. I hope we can continue to come together and support those who need it, whenever they need it.   You can follow Conor Dunford, Playmakers FC and Prost Amerika below. It’s been a weekend where shocking events off the field have overshadowed football. On Saturday night, after Leicester City’s game with West Ham, Leicester owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha was among those to lose his life when a helicopter carrying him and 4 others crashed outside the King Power Stadium. Under his stewardship, Leicester despite odds of 5,000 to 1, won the Premier League title in 2016, perhaps the most incredible title victory in the history of English football.Gab Marcotti and Natalie Sawyer are joined by Henry Winter, Alyson Rudd and Oliver Kay for their reaction. In an age where fans feel disenfranchised from their club, Srivaddhanaprabha was an owner who tried to reverse that trend and connected with the community. The panel reflect on an owner that made good decisions on the pitch too, from hiring the ridiculed Ranieri to investing in unknown gems.In the Premier League, Ross Barkley continues to thrive under Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea. Did people forget how good he is? And can Ruben Loftus-Cheek thrive in the same way or is he still at the wrong club this season? And after another impressive display for Bournemouth, the stock of Eddie Howe and Callum Wilson continues to rise.
