Hosted on Acast.

Today I speak to Tom Fallowfield, founder of Ugli Web Design. As my brother, he was one of the first people I spoke to about my redundancy. His comment, ‘If you work that hard for other people, why don't you work that hard for yourself?' was enough for me to head to Companies House registration page. Here he shares tried & tested experience on pricing, proposals & passwords. Ugli assists SME clients in adopting internet & e-commerce technologies to find the opportunities in this weird new world which we've all suddenly landed in: tom@ugli.hk Tom's advice:There is nothing to be afraid of when becoming self employedYour work ethic can be far stronger for yourself than when working for othersKnow your pricing and don't be too cheap Always put yourself in the customer's shoes, price yourself by value. Think about what value it has to them rather than the cost to you Always know why you're different to the competition & price yourself accordingly Don't win the work at all costs: you'll be on the back foot, the client will treat you accordingly & it will become hard to earn your workload wellAlways ask for feedback, especially on the declined proposalsThe proposal just needs to satisfy the task at hand, it is to win the business & get the client to the next stage, nothing moreDraft your website content before briefing a web designer - it'll save you time & money. Live with it for a little while before contracting it outWhy password security is so important given how many people are trying to hack sites all the time. Do not use dictionary wordsWhy SEO is important to get right to win new business. Inbound links to your content will get promotedWebsite text (not just images) is vital for SEO, but don't overdo the keywords. "Keyword stuffing" will get you penalisedGoogle/Facebook Ads (PPC) is an alternative to SEO: rapid results but can be expensiveDelegating is important, delegate anything you don't love doingHiring people dramatically changes your business immediately. Jeannette Pritchard is the founder and Chair of JPC, a multi-award-winning strategic brand and communications consultancy. In 2018 she was recognised by the queen for services to business and entrepreneurship. and if you are remotely interested in: Entrepreneurship Experiential design Customer experience Social entrepreneurship and Changing people lives you will absolutely love this conversation. She was one of the first people to combine the fields of Operatic and theatre design with the emerging customer experience priority that brands started to have. So for a few years, she flew around the world, hanging Hondas in the air and creating breathtaking displays to launch new cars. She was part of the movement to encourage female entrepreneurs to start their own businesses. We take it for granted now but in the 90s there weren’t that many women entrepreneurs. Her alumni have collectively achieved an astonishing 96% business survival rate against the national average of 25% and they have created more than 200 new jobs from scratch and have on average tripled turnover. She also founded Ugli, partnering with the BBC which has transformed an unused area of West-London into a thriving creative start-up community of more than 700 people working across fashion, film, photography, digital and design and in in the process only helped unofficially zone West London as the new spiritual home for creative start-ups.
Life-Cycle Series Episode Eight - Disposal Reduce, reuse, recycle. It's what we have ingrained in us and it's what we need. Donate to charity do NOT put it in the bin (unless in an unwearable condition of course). Or how about we just reduce what we buy altogether? Our worldly crisis of global warming and pollution is out of control with many industries (and people) contributing to this while we do nothing about it. I love the textile industry but it is the second largest polluter in the world right next to oil. We ignore this (even myself) and we produce or we buy our clothes from fast fashion industries because is cheap, it’s fast and the feeling of purchasing something releases endorphins that make us so happy! So we do it again and again and again until there will be nothing left. I am making this podcast series so that you as a designer, consumer or entrepreneur in the textile industry can get all the do’s and don'ts so that you are wearing the label of “Completely Sustainable” in your thoughts, wardrobe or store. I want you to think about a products whole life-cycle with the Priti Ugli mindset so that the decisions you make have been thoroughly thought about - with the Priti vs the Ugli of a purchase being considered. Each episode I delve into the chapters of a garments life-cycle and how we make this cycle Completely sustainable and what brands are reaching into a stage. Music: That Old Feeling by DeKobe and April Showers by Aqualina Written and Produced by Liv Redman
Life-Cycle Series Episode Six - Retail Today I talk about the basics of how to make a retail store more ethical. It's important to remember that consumers create demand, suppliers create supply. This means that (as consumers) we have the power to control product production and what product is in our stores. Life-Cycle Series Episode Seven - Garment Use Buy smarter, not cheaper! The three main points from today: buy durability; buy bio-degradable; and lastly, buy timelessness. Our worldly crisis of global warming and pollution is out of control with many industries (and people) contributing to this while we do nothing about it. I love the textile industry but it is the second largest polluter in the world right next to oil. Priti Ugli Life-Cycle Series Episode Five - Distribution The most important fact from today: Transporting one tonne of garments emits 1.5kg of C02 by ship and 143.0kg by air! Our worldly crisis of global warming and pollution is out of control with many industries (and people) contributing to this while we do nothing about it. I love the textile industry but it is the second largest polluter in the world right next to oil. Priti Ugli Life-cycle series episode One: Fast Fashion Today I sum up the dangers of fast fashion and why we need to think about a garments' life-cycle as a whole. Each episode I will delve into the chapters of a garments life-cycle and how we make this cycle Completely sustainable and what brands are reaching into a stage.
