You built your firm to give yourself freedom. So why does it feel like you've never been more trapped? If your alarm goes off at five, your laptop comes on vacation with you, and the only way the work gets done is when you do it yourself, this conversation will land hard.In this episode, Gary sits down with Simone Fulmer Gaus, co-founder of Fulmer Sill and author of The Set-Up, to unpack why most lawyers stay stuck even after they leave the firm that was burning them out. Simone shares the Texas highway breakdown that cracked her open, the near-payroll-miss that forced her to stop lying to herself, and the five-pillar framework that has since grown her firm more than twenty times in revenue without burning out the people inside it. If you are tired of being the bottleneck in your own practice, this is the blueprint."If the foundation is breaking, it doesn't matter that you're putting fancy paint on the wall. Marketing is a tactic. The foundation is whether your team is ready when the cases come in."Key TakeawaysRecognize the trap: most lawyers rebuild the same broken model in their own firm with themselves at the centerStop fixing the surface: marketing, hiring, and software cannot repair a weak foundationBuild on five pillars: People, Pipeline, Process, Product, and ProfitabilityReframe pipeline as the full client journey, not just a marketing funnelBuild the firm as something separate from you, so it can outlast you and grow beyond youAsk the harder question first: what do you actually want, not what success is supposed to look likeStart tomorrow by sorting every part of your firm under the five pillars to see where the chaos really livesIf this conversation resonated, share it with a colleague who needs to hear it, and take a moment to follow the show and leave a review so more attorneys can find it. The Secret Behind Sustainable Excellence

Leadership With Heart

Have you ever stopped to consider that the missing ingredient in sustainable excellence isn't working harder, but recovering better? In this solo episode of Becoming Unshakable, I explore one of the most overlooked aspects of leadership and personal resilience: intentional recovery. We often celebrate relentless effort, packed calendars, and constant availability, but what if those habits are quietly limiting our ability to perform at our best? Drawing inspiration from elite athletes like LeBron James and the Williams sisters, I share why high performers invest so heavily in maintaining their greatest asset: themselves. While most of us don't have access to personal trainers or recovery chambers, we can all make deliberate choices that strengthen our physical, emotional, and mental capacity to lead. I also reflect on my own journey of learning this lesson the hard way. For years, I believed sleep, rest, and personal space were luxuries that could wait. Eventually, I discovered that caring for everyone else while neglecting myself was not sustainable. That realization changed how I think about leadership, performance, and what it truly means to become unshakable. Throughout this conversation, I discuss practical ways to rebalance workloads, create space for strategic thinking, recognize when you or your team are operating beyond capacity, and build recovery practices that allow you to consistently show up as your best self. Because excellence is not created by running at full speed every moment of every day. It is created by knowing when to push, when to pause, and when to restore. If you have ever felt guilty for taking a break, struggled to prioritize your own wellbeing, or believed caring for yourself somehow makes you less committed, this episode is for you. Recovery is not a reward for hard work. It is what makes sustained excellence possible. What recovery habit could make the biggest difference in your leadership, and what would change if you gave yourself permission to care for yourself as intentionally as you care for everyone else? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Coaching is a practical and effective form of support for physicians practicing amidst the chaos of modern medicine. It is a grounded way to help physicians practice with greater agency, steadiness, and self-respect. Sustainable excellence requires skills that most physicians were not taught in training. Skepticism can be wise, but it can also keep us from receiving helpful and needed support. Effective change comes from noticing, regulating, and responding on purpose --not trying harder.   Reflection Questions What are you trying to solve with more effort that requires a different skill? Brad has spent years studying sustainable excellence across sport, leadership, creativity, and life—and this conversation digs into why excellence is neither perfection nor hustle, but something far more human.Brad and I unpack the difference between true excellence and what he calls “pseudo-excellence,” why metrics often outlive their usefulness, and how habits like routine, curiosity, and gumption play a central role in meaningful progress. Along the way, we explore why satisfaction outlasts happiness, why flow isn't always the goal, and how focusing on the task at hand—not the time on hand—changes everything.Six Discussion PointsWhy excellence must be reclaimed from hustle culture, optimization, and perfectionismThe difference between efficiency and excellence—and why short-term efficiency often undermines long-term growthMetrics, mastery, and knowing when measures help—or get in the wayFlow versus values-driven excellence (and why not all flow is good)Gumption, routines, and building momentum without becoming roboticWhy satisfaction comes from effort on worthwhile work, not outcomes aloneThree Connection PointsThe Way of Excellence by Brad StulbergThe Growth Equation (Blog Posts)Listen to Brad's previous appearance on APCThis conversation is a reminder that excellence isn't about doing more—it's about doing what matters with care, patience, and intention. Stop Sabotaging Your Success

In this episode, Cindy Esliger addresses perfectionism and why the drive to be perfect quietly sabotages us, fuelling procrastination and self-doubt. The pursuit of flawlessness seems like a noble quest, but it proves to be a cleverly disguised trap that delays progress and increases our stress. What is the alternative to perfectionism? Cindy explains that sustainable excellence is what we should strive for over perfection. It's a balance of ambition with self-compassion that protects our mental health and rebuilds confidence.   Perfectionism becomes a loop that urges us to set impossibly high standards, feel anxious about meeting those standards, avoid the task due to the pressure we created, finally get the task done in a panic, and then, exhausted, still believe we could have done better. Flawlessness is damaging and drives us to constantly outdo ourselves. Cindy points out five ways in which perfectionism messes with our performance, well-being, and career growth: 1. Expectation, escalation, and burnout, 2. Mental health fallout, 3. Inconsistent performance, 4. Refusal to delegate, and 5. Plateaued growth.  Cindy advises that we shift our energy from being perfect to being more strategic. She explains intentional imperfection and how it involves choosing where to be excellent and where to be average on purpose. She offers five strategies for moving away from the perfectionism trap: 1. Use time, not outcome, to set boundaries, 2. Get honest about the trade-offs, 3. Practice planned procrastination, 4. Recalibrate what enough means, and 5. Intentionally choose where to excel. It's okay to want to be great, but greatness doesn't come from being perfect. It comes from showing up consistently and learning through missteps.Resources discussed in this episode:Guide to Letting GoAstronomic AudioConfidence Collective—Contact Cindy Esliger Career Confidence Coaching: website | instagram | facebook | linkedin | email Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Send us a textTerry Tucker's life story reads like an action movie with an unexpected spiritual twist. From college basketball player to SWAT hostage negotiator to a 13-year battle with cancer that doctors initially gave him just two years to survive, Terry has transformed each challenge into an opportunity for growth and service. When faced with a terminal diagnosis, Terry asked himself a profound question: "How can I turn this death sentence into a life sentence?" His answer led him to discover purpose in pain and meaning in misery. Despite losing his foot in 2018 and his leg in 2020 to cancer, Terry radiates an infectious optimism that challenges conventional wisdom about suffering. As he shares with disarming honesty, "I've done more living in the 13 years that I've been dying of cancer than I've done in my entire life."The wisdom Terry has gathered along his journey forms the foundation of his book "Sustainable Excellence," where he outlines ten principles for leading an extraordinary life. Among these, one stands out as particularly transformative: "Most people think with their fears and insecurities instead of using their minds." This insight has powerful implications for anyone feeling stuck or afraid to pursue their deepest aspirations.Terry's approach to adversity is built on what he calls his "three Fs" – faith, family, and friends. His spiritual journey has evolved through his health battles, creating a relationship with God that accommodates both gratitude and frustration, trust and questioning. This authentic spirituality provides a framework for finding purpose even in the most challenging circumstances.Whether you're facing health challenges, professional setbacks, or simply seeking greater meaning in your life, Terry's message reminds us that our limits are often self-imposed. As he illustrates through a fascinating story about rats treading water, hope and belief can extend our endurance far beyond what we think possible.
