This week we are time traveling back to the 1930's to examine the legacy of the Universal Monster Movies. Why is it that these classic films about gothic castles, mad scientists, vampires, mummies, and more have for nearly 100 years captivated our collective imaginations? Could it be that these films were made so well? Or maybe that the filmmakers themselves brought elements of their own personalities to these characters. We'll find out today as we examine the classic monsters from Universal Studios. DISCORD!!! Take the conversation further! This week on End Credits, we get a jump on Halloween month with a vampire tale. But lest you think this is some horror movie like Last Voyage of the Demeter, it's got a very pointed historical and political point of view. We're going back to Netflix to review the new political satire El Conde, and along with that, we're going to discuss other similar satires. This Wednesday, September 27, at 3 pm, Adam A. Donaldson and Tim Phillips will discuss: Satire Power. So this week we're talking about a political satire, but that doesn't mean a laugh-out-loud comedy. No, sometimes a political satire holds up a dark mirror to the audience and makes them confront a certain reality under the veil of jokes and silliness, and sometimes it borrows from the occasional silliness of our politics and takes it to the extreme. For this week's show, we will talk about some of our favourite satires, from the silly to the serious. REVIEW: El Conde (2023). Director Pablo Lorrain has done a couple of very stylistic bio-pics with Jackie and Spencer, but those were a warm up for the creative license taken with El Conde. You may think that Augusto Pinochet died in 2006, but in this movie we see the "reel" Pinochet, a 300-year-old vampire in hiding with his greedy family, ungrateful wife, and Russian man servant Fryodor, who's also a vampire. It's a bit weird to take the (after)life of a brutal dictator and turn it into a Universal Monster Movie, but is Lorrain able to make that shot, or will it bounce off the rim? End Credits is on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca Wednesday at 3 pm.
PATREON MOVIE DISCUSSION: This movie was selected by our Patreon Supporters over at the Cinematic Doctrine Patreon. Support as little as $3 a month and have your voice heard! In this episode, Melanie & Melvin are discussing The Mummy (1999)! Branden Frasier is back in the mix with his popular Oscar-winning performance in The Whale, but we're traveling back over two-decades to a time long ago; one of adventure, excitement, and endless sand!Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 53-minutes discussing "modesty", both its literal definition and it's ever-changing, inconsistent, and convoluted cultural usage. Melanie & Melvin each approach the topic from different angles, challenging both cultural and biblical understandings as the two talk comfortably and freely. (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)Before discussing The Mummy (1999), Melvin gives some background on The Mummy (1932).When Melvin watched the staple Universal Monster Movies in 2022, he noticed that The Mummy (1932) seemed the most edgy and sensational among them. The Mummy (1999) carries some of that spirit with its borderline punk-rock nature.Melanie downright loves The Mummy (1999), and explains what it is that makes the film so magical for her. Melvin thought it was just okay, and stepped away thinking the movie was exceptionally well-paced.Evelyn stands out as a particularly well-written example of a strong female companion, especially among a cast of fairly simple, albeit fun characters.Melanie ponders where adventure films have gone, and whether or not the genre has migrated solely to the mini-series or television series format.Briefly discussing the sequels in the franchise.Melvin shares some insight into how he decides what movies to discuss, when to discuss them, and how, because not every movie is made equal, and not every movie produces interesting or engaging discussion.Recommendations:Ju-On: Black Ghost (2009) (Movie)Doctor Sleep (2019) (Movie) Support the showSupport on Patreon for Unique Perks! Peter Martinez returns with Alexis Soto to celebrate the classic Universal Monster Movies for Halloween: "Dracula," "Frankenstein," "The Mummy," The Invisible Man," The Bride of Frankenstein," "The Wolf Man," "Phantom of the Opera," and "The Creature From the Black Lagoon."
As Disney digs further and further into the backlog of the Marvel properties that they purchased back in 2009, they've released shows about such characters as Black Panther, She-Hulk, and Moon Knight. As Halloween approaches in 2022, a one shot television special appeared on Disney+ called WEREWOLF BY NIGHT based off the comic book that first appeared in 1972. Using the old Universal Monster Movie production values, the show brought back nostalgia for what was a brand new episode in the Marvel Universe. With the death of Ulysses Bloodstone, five monster hunters are called to the Bloodstone estate in hopes to find one of them worthy enough to inherit the talisman known as the Bloodstone. The powerful weapon would make them more powerful than most of the monsters they would be hunting. But there is a wrinkle. To claim the Bloodstone, the five must not only fight a monster, but they also may have fight each other. Directed by Michael Giacchino and written by Heather Quinn and Peter Cameron, the show stars Gael Garcia Bernal, Laura Donnelly, among others. The episode premiered October 7, 2022 in preparation for Halloween. Your co-hosts take a look at this interesting inclusion to the Marvel Universe and the reintroduction to beloved characters from the past within the comic canon.

We hope everyone had a safe and happy Halloween! To cap our series on Universal Monster Movies, we're taking a look at the last really iconic horror creation the studio produced, The Creature from the Black Lagoon. After partial, fossilized remains of a strange, human-like amphibious creature are found in a remote Amazonian location, a small team of researchers is dispatched to try and find the rest of the remains in hopes of it leading to a scientific breakthrough. Shortly after their arrival, however, they begin to be terrorized by a still-living creature that appears to be from the same species as the remains. The Creature from the Black Lagoon was released in 1954, blurring the line between the iconic monster movies of the 30s and 40s, and the sci-fi horror pictures that were in vogue throughout the 50s. Regardless of the semantic debate on whether this is a monster movie or sci-fi, there's no doubting that the creature itself is absolutely one of the signature Universal Monsters, a pop culture icon that remains immediately recognizable more than six decades after its release. The film was directed by Jack Arnold, one of that era's finest genre filmmakers, and perhaps the single most important figure in 1950s sci-fi cinema. Please send letters and get well cards to Riccou Browning (the underwater Gill-man/creature) at: Riccou Browning 5221 SW 196 Lane Southwest Ranches, FL 33332
Join us for the second part of our two Halloween specials for Spooktober! As we go back to the origins of Hollywood horror and tackle the King of the Universal Monster Movies; Frankenstein and the following sequel Bride of Frankenstein. Both directed by James Whale, who can be thought of as a early auteur for horror and Hollywood expressionism. We talk about how Universal got into making horror, how Frankenstein got adapted, how the Heys code impacted the two movies and how Whale's identity and that of his actors contributed to those movies and have been read over the years as Queer cinema. It's a story that, by now, is as famous as the monster it led Mary Shelley to create: On a dark and stormy evening, two British literary giants, Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron, challenged each other and the handful of friends in attendance to write the best ghost story. The unlikely winner was Percy Shelley's teenaged wife, Mary, who would ride her creation to fame and literary immortality. But there's a lot more to this story, and so, so much more to Mary herself. For the Halloween episode, John invited Dan Colón (back for his second straight episode) and frequent guest Mike Manzi - who together host the Universal Monster Movie podcast The Monsters That Made Us - to join him as they dig into the life and mind of Mary Shelley: What haunted her, what drove her, and how her masterpiece, Frankenstein, is as much autobiography is it is the blueprint for the entire horror genre. Among the many sources for this episode, none were more illuminating than The Strange and Twisted Life of "Frankenstein" by Jill Lepore TWITTER/Links!
