In 1999 Jes and Wes were on a quest to work for themselves and have more control over their own time. That's when they created Crown Upholstery. After 25 years they have  definitely worked, but they have yet to gain much control over their time. Jesica is the 5th generation in her family to be enticed by the upholstery lifestyle. Growing up in her grandparents shop, in Glendale Arizona, she witnessed first hand the freedoms upholstery had to offer as well as the hard work one has to put in to be successful in this craft. Wes was raised in Maryland and had never known upholstery to be anything other than something you did to the interiors of cars.  The sirens of upholstery began to sing to him on a visit to Jesica's grandparents house. He saw their home based shop and the countless processes that go into this craft and quickly fell in love. Having a background in auto mechanics he was already primed for the problem solving journey that upholstery provides. He took a few classes taught by Jesica's grandfather, Frank, and then began his apprenticeship with him after Frank saw the enthusiasm and attention to detail Wes had. Within a few years of walking into an upholstery shop for the first time, Wes was starting his own. It began in a tiny one car garage that shared space with laundry machines, holiday decorations and lawn equipment but it did the job. Jesica had experience in accounting and she's much better at organization and management of things so that made the decision of who would be boss really easy.  They moved across country a couple of times searching for a place to settle down and eventually landed in east Tennessee. In the 17 years living and working in Knoxville they have established a reputation for quality upholstery and excellent customer service. For the majority of their upholstery career they have been a home based business. In 2018 they purchased their first commercial space. A 1920's grocery store with an apartment above. They were officially a business based home. Within a few years, and after hiring another upholsterer Crown Upholstery was ready for more growth.  Jesica found and purchased another building in the same neighborhood. This allowed them to bring on another full-time upholsterer. Jesica was now coordinating the schedules of 3 upholsterers along with everything else that goes into running a business. They still live above the old upholstery shop but it is now a Hair salon that Jesica manages as well. There's a reason she won Knoxville's Women owned business of the year 2024. Even when they aren't working together they still enjoy spending time together. Whether it's camping, sifting through junks shops or riding bikes.  They are rarely seen very far apart.  Crown Upholstery is on Instagram and Facebook SBA - Small Business Association Kim's Upholstery

Polykrisen. Periodontal disease contributes to inflammation and infection and is showing links to other health conditions like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer's disease. In addition to human trials, success is seen in trials with veterinarians to regenerate bone in dogs.  Stella Vnook elaborates, "Dentists can identify the early warning signs, but in addition to oral hygiene, we also found, and it's supported by data, there are some people who are predisposed to just having issues with their gums and/or periodontal disease. There are genetic implications, and there are people that have comorbidities. The goal is to remove the plaque and the bacteria film. But the process is rather painful. One of the reasons why I founded this technology and this company is because of the scaling and root planing, which is quite painful." Bill explains, "I'd like to add there's a real recognition lately from scientists around the world that inflammation is the root cause of a lot of major diseases - cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and even Alzheimer's. What they're finding is that the fibrous bacteria travel from the mouth throughout the body, contributing to heart disease, diabetes, pregnancy complications, cancer, and Alzheimer's. Just recently, there's some NIH data that shows that P. gingivitis, the main pathogen for chronic gum disease, has been identified in the brain of Alzheimer's disease patients. So, it's not just about gum disease, it's about total body health, and there is a need to be taking care of that and being mindful of the downstream effects of not taking care of periodontal disease." #OralBioLife #GumDisease #PeriodontalDisease #Inflammation #Veterinarians #BoneRegeneration oralbiolife.com Download the transcript here

Das kann beim Autofahren passieren, beim Kochen oder beim Lesen einer Lastwagenaufschrift. Anna Breitenbachs Gedichte sind witzig und temperamentvoll, haben aber auch Tiefgang und regen zum Nachdenken an.

Upholstering Great Furniture. Wes's career in upholstering began in 1999, a few years after he arrived in Phoenix, AZ from Havre de Grace, MD/ It was in Phoenix that Wes learned the generations-old tradecraft of reupholstering furniture from Jesica's grandfather, Frank Ramey Sr (who originally taught both Jesica and her father, Frank Ramey Jr). Frank Sr, in turn, had learned the art of upholstery from his mother (who took it up from her own mother during the Great Depression in order to help make ends meet). After years in the Sonoran Desert of Phoenix, Jes and Wes decided to make the move to Knoxville, TN over a decade ago. For that decade, Jes and Wes have made it their pursuit to embrace and love the natural beauty of the region while practicing their well-honed skills for its diverse citizenry. While they still rely on the age-old skills of sewing and cutting as a business, the trade has become a passion as well as a career.Learn more about Crown Upholstery and follow the adventures of Wes & Jes: https://crownupholsterytn.com/https://www.instagram.com/crownupholstery/Listen to all episodes of the Big Ideas Welcome podcast, available now on your favorite streaming platforms and at bigideaswelcome.com.This Big Ideas Welcome podcast is brought to you by Knoxville Entrepreneur Center, hosted and curated by KEC chief of strategy  Chris McAdoo, and produced and edited by Palm Tree Pod Co.

Being a hotelier wasn't always the goal for Brigette Breitenbach. Back in 2006, one of her clients came to her and asked if she could do some branding for a new hotel that was being opened, and she never looked back. Brigette, now the owner and founder of B&Co as well as an owner of the Iron Horse Hotel in Milwaukee, joins host Dan Ryan to talk about what hospitality means to her. Takeaways:    Hospitality isn't a service, it is to meaningfully care for the guests. It's all about trying to make the guest feel cared for. It's important to know what your guests want. Understanding their wants and needs can help to establish your brand. The market and the guests will tell you what they want. The younger generation spends more money on travel and experiences more so than previous generations. Hotels are like a book, you need to have a compelling story, but every chapter also needs to make sense. The best hotels are the ones that offer a variety of different experiences within one space.  If you are struggling with something, it's always better to say that. If you're willing to do that, it can help with client relationships and staff relationships. Sometimes we are defined by the business we don't take. Sometimes saying no to business can help make sure your staff isn't overwhelmed. Quote of the Show:   2:24:  “All of our projects start with a discovery phase and we tell all of our clients that with the exception of a few markets, we don't know their market. We don't know the city that they're from. We don't know the local community. And so we start to dig in and we almost come at every project with the perspective of being the guest. And so we try to dig in and we understand kind of what's happening in that market. What's new and exciting. And then we really drill down to, okay, who do you think your target audience is? Who are you building this property for? Or rebranding it for? Because until you define their passions, interests and values really don't know what you're going for. And so to understand that market and guest exploration piece of the puzzle,  you're never going to get to the foundational brand. So it really starts with who are you trying to please.” Links:   LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brigettebreitenbach/ Website: https://bcobranding.com Shout Outs: 0:25 Independent Lodging Congress 10:52 The Iron Horse Hotel 10:58 Lehman Brothers 11:11 Hilltop 29:53 Bashar Wali 30:22 Andrew Friendly  31:57 Jason Caldwell 32:10 David Rockwell Ways to Tune In:  Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPX Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1s Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419 Youtube : https://youtu.be/veOjMFAHF6I

In this episode we get a taste of what it is like to be a stickbow hunter in S. Africa. Johandre is a great guest sharing his experiences as a bowhunter and PH. How the meat from game animals is distributed and used among the locals I found particularly interesting. Also preparing for his next hunt for Giraffe sounded intriguing....
