In 1999 Jes and Wes were on a quest to work for themselves and have more control over their own time. That's when they created Crown Upholstery. After 25 years they have  definitely worked, but they have yet to gain much control over their time. Jesica is the 5th generation in her family to be enticed by the upholstery lifestyle. Growing up in her grandparents shop, in Glendale Arizona, she witnessed first hand the freedoms upholstery had to offer as well as the hard work one has to put in to be successful in this craft. Wes was raised in Maryland and had never known upholstery to be anything other than something you did to the interiors of cars.  The sirens of upholstery began to sing to him on a visit to Jesica's grandparents house. He saw their home based shop and the countless processes that go into this craft and quickly fell in love. Having a background in auto mechanics he was already primed for the problem solving journey that upholstery provides. He took a few classes taught by Jesica's grandfather, Frank, and then began his apprenticeship with him after Frank saw the enthusiasm and attention to detail Wes had. Within a few years of walking into an upholstery shop for the first time, Wes was starting his own. It began in a tiny one car garage that shared space with laundry machines, holiday decorations and lawn equipment but it did the job. Jesica had experience in accounting and she's much better at organization and management of things so that made the decision of who would be boss really easy.  They moved across country a couple of times searching for a place to settle down and eventually landed in east Tennessee. In the 17 years living and working in Knoxville they have established a reputation for quality upholstery and excellent customer service. For the majority of their upholstery career they have been a home based business. In 2018 they purchased their first commercial space. A 1920's grocery store with an apartment above. They were officially a business based home. Within a few years, and after hiring another upholsterer Crown Upholstery was ready for more growth.  Jesica found and purchased another building in the same neighborhood. This allowed them to bring on another full-time upholsterer. Jesica was now coordinating the schedules of 3 upholsterers along with everything else that goes into running a business. They still live above the old upholstery shop but it is now a Hair salon that Jesica manages as well. There's a reason she won Knoxville's Women owned business of the year 2024. Even when they aren't working together they still enjoy spending time together. Whether it's camping, sifting through junks shops or riding bikes.  They are rarely seen very far apart.  Crown Upholstery is on Instagram and Facebook SBA - Small Business Association Kim's Upholstery

Stella Vnook, the Founder and President, and Bill Breitenbach, CEO of Oral Bio Life, talk about the prevalence and causes of periodontal disease and the limitations of current treatments. The Oral Bio Life PiezoGEL technology has shown effective removal of plaque and treatment of bacteria on teeth and regenerating bone for a long-term solution. Periodontal disease contributes to inflammation and infection and is showing links to other health conditions like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer's disease. In addition to human trials, success is seen in trials with veterinarians to regenerate bone in dogs.  Stella Vnook elaborates, "Dentists can identify the early warning signs, but in addition to oral hygiene, we also found, and it's supported by data, there are some people who are predisposed to just having issues with their gums and/or periodontal disease. There are genetic implications, and there are people that have comorbidities. The goal is to remove the plaque and the bacteria film. But the process is rather painful. One of the reasons why I founded this technology and this company is because of the scaling and root planing, which is quite painful." Bill explains, "I'd like to add there's a real recognition lately from scientists around the world that inflammation is the root cause of a lot of major diseases - cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and even Alzheimer's. What they're finding is that the fibrous bacteria travel from the mouth throughout the body, contributing to heart disease, diabetes, pregnancy complications, cancer, and Alzheimer's. Just recently, there's some NIH data that shows that P. gingivitis, the main pathogen for chronic gum disease, has been identified in the brain of Alzheimer's disease patients. So, it's not just about gum disease, it's about total body health, and there is a need to be taking care of that and being mindful of the downstream effects of not taking care of periodontal disease." #OralBioLife #GumDisease #PeriodontalDisease #Inflammation #Veterinarians #BoneRegeneration oralbiolife.com Listen to the podcast here

Hello and welcome to The Rob Burgess Show. I am, of course, your host, Rob Burgess. On this our 218th episode, our guest is T. E. Breitenbach. T. E. Breitenbach, born in 1951 in Queens, New York, is a self-taught American artist best known for his painting "Proverbidioms", a raucous and comical depiction of over 300 common proverbs and clichés. He also collaborated with Jim Morrison of The Doors, shortly before Morrison's 1971 death, on a painting intended for use on his "An American Prayer" album. T. E. was the youngest person to receive a Rome Prize Fellowship in visual arts. Inspired by the castles and museums of Europe, he returned home determined to build a castle-studio to house his art and eventually become a museum. During the planning stages he painted Proverbidioms and later published it. He also writes musicals and in 2016 produced "Hieronymus, A Musical Fantasy", the story of an artist with a 'too-large' imagination, available as play-on-demand on PBS.
