In 1999 Jes and Wes were on a quest to work for themselves and have more control over their own time. That's when they created Crown Upholstery. After 25 years they have definitely worked, but they have yet to gain much control over their time. Jesica is the 5th generation in her family to be enticed by the upholstery lifestyle. Growing up in her grandparents shop, in Glendale Arizona, she witnessed first hand the freedoms upholstery had to offer as well as the hard work one has to put in to be successful in this craft. Wes was raised in Maryland and had never known upholstery to be anything other than something you did to the interiors of cars. The sirens of upholstery began to sing to him on a visit to Jesica's grandparents house. He saw their home based shop and the countless processes that go into this craft and quickly fell in love. Having a background in auto mechanics he was already primed for the problem solving journey that upholstery provides. He took a few classes taught by Jesica's grandfather, Frank, and then began his apprenticeship with him after Frank saw the enthusiasm and attention to detail Wes had. Within a few years of walking into an upholstery shop for the first time, Wes was starting his own. It began in a tiny one car garage that shared space with laundry machines, holiday decorations and lawn equipment but it did the job. Jesica had experience in accounting and she's much better at organization and management of things so that made the decision of who would be boss really easy. They moved across country a couple of times searching for a place to settle down and eventually landed in east Tennessee. In the 17 years living and working in Knoxville they have established a reputation for quality upholstery and excellent customer service. For the majority of their upholstery career they have been a home based business. In 2018 they purchased their first commercial space. A 1920's grocery store with an apartment above. They were officially a business based home. Within a few years, and after hiring another upholsterer Crown Upholstery was ready for more growth. Jesica found and purchased another building in the same neighborhood. This allowed them to bring on another full-time upholsterer. Jesica was now coordinating the schedules of 3 upholsterers along with everything else that goes into running a business. They still live above the old upholstery shop but it is now a Hair salon that Jesica manages as well. There's a reason she won Knoxville's Women owned business of the year 2024. Even when they aren't working together they still enjoy spending time together. Whether it's camping, sifting through junks shops or riding bikes. They are rarely seen very far apart. When change occurs in life, the tendency in human beings is to judge it. Sometimes, there is so much going on that it can feel chaotic and scary. In this episode, Jesica Henderson, the executive producer of The Transformation Network and I will be discussing how we navigate the scary waters of our lives and the many ways that the unexpected has given us both a chance to re-evaluate how we get to take on this New Year of 2025 with ease and joy. How do we adapt when life feels uncertain? What tools can we use to to take care of our well-being? How can we make lemonade out of lemons? These and other questions will be answered as we look at empowerment and our commitment to living our BEST lives.Watch: https://youtu.be/AkS420_V8IA

Meet Jessica Medellin — a woman born in Utah, raised to conform to conservative patriarchal values, who faced blatant sexism in the school system as a teacher and who found herself leaning into the rise of the Divine Feminine. This is the story about a mother who decided that enough was enough. And that she would take her experience and gifts in a way that ensured her daughter wouldn't have to face what she did. And so the first of sn evolving series of red thread honoring manuals was born — "First Moon Manual: Letters to Our Daughters"/ Here's to the next generation of menstruating humans being liberated from the internal narrative that bleeding makes us dirty and sinful. Here's to our daughters being able to honor their bodies, their cycles — to find power in the red thread lineage we are all a part of. I am so excited to be sharing with you this conversation and all of Jessica's magic. Enjoy! **DOORS ARE NOW *OPEN for the beta round of Witchhunt Collective** The Witchhunt Collective is about taking this podcast experience to the next level by offering a series of sacred women's circles — regular opportunities to remember and embody your power you were born with to honor your soul mission. This Collective is something for you to consider, if you desire:
The CDC's Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain excludes those undergoing cancer treatment, palliative care, and end-of-life care. In doing so, it seems to give the impression that pain seen in cancer is inherently different than pain seen in other conditions and that those with cancer may not have the same risk for opioid use disorder as compared to other conditions. Today's podcast tackles these issues and more with three amazing guests: Katie Jones, Jessica Merlin, and Devon Check. We start off the conversation by talking about whether patients with cancer and cancer pain are really that different, and their paper that was just published on January 11th in JAMA Oncology showing that substance use disorder is not uncommon in individuals with cancer. After discussing screening options for substance use disorder, we go on to talk about both the treatments for it and the issues that arise. In particular, we talk about Katie's and Jesica's paper in NEJM titled “Juggling Two Full-Time Jobs — Methadone Clinic Engagement and Cancer Care,” which described the difficulty in managing cancer pain and methadone for opioid use disorder. Lastly, we discuss Katie's paper on substance use disorder in an aging population and how one can incorporate the 5 Ms (ie, matters most, medications, mind, mobility, and multicomplexity) into a framework for age-friendly care for older adults with substance use disorder. If you want to do a deeper dive, here are some other references we talk about in the podcast: Previous podcasts on substance use disorder Buprenorphine Use in Serious Illness: A Podcast with Katie Fitzgerald Jones, Zachary Sager and Janet Ho Substance Use in Older Adults: A Podcast with Ben Han Palliative Care, Chronic Pain, and the Opioid Epidemic: GeriPal Podcast with Jessie Merlin Expert consensus-based guidance Expert consensus-based guidance on approaches to opioid management in individuals with advanced cancer-related pain and nonmedical stimulant use Consensus-Based Guidance on Opioid Management in Individuals With Advanced Cancer-Related Pain and Opioid Misuse or Use Disorder Expert Panel Consensus on Management of Advanced Cancer-Related Pain in Individuals With Opioid Use Disorder

About Wes & Jes: Even Moving Cross Country Twice, One Thing Has Remained Constant. Upholstering Great Furniture. Wes's career in upholstering began in 1999, a few years after he arrived in Phoenix, AZ from Havre de Grace, MD/ It was in Phoenix that Wes learned the generations-old tradecraft of reupholstering furniture from Jesica's grandfather, Frank Ramey Sr (who originally taught both Jesica and her father, Frank Ramey Jr). Frank Sr, in turn, had learned the art of upholstery from his mother (who took it up from her own mother during the Great Depression in order to help make ends meet). After years in the Sonoran Desert of Phoenix, Jes and Wes decided to make the move to Knoxville, TN over a decade ago. For that decade, Jes and Wes have made it their pursuit to embrace and love the natural beauty of the region while practicing their well-honed skills for its diverse citizenry. While they still rely on the age-old skills of sewing and cutting as a business, the trade has become a passion as well as a career.Learn more about Crown Upholstery and follow the adventures of Wes & Jes: https://crownupholsterytn.com/https://www.instagram.com/crownupholstery/Listen to all episodes of the Big Ideas Welcome podcast, available now on your favorite streaming platforms and at bigideaswelcome.com.This Big Ideas Welcome podcast is brought to you by Knoxville Entrepreneur Center, hosted and curated by KEC chief of strategy Chris McAdoo, and produced and edited by Palm Tree Pod Co.
