About This EpisodeIn the realm of high performance and personal development, few things resonate more deeply than the pursuit of authenticity and the boldness required to achieve it. Our latest episode featuring Dr. Michael Gervais, a high-performance psychologist, delves into these very concepts, exploring the profound impact of a bold mindset on our capacity to excel in life's various arenas. Michael begins by deconstructing the notion of boldness, presenting it as a deep expression of one's true self, unencumbered by the fear of judgment or failure. Michael also dives into an exploration of mastery and the pivotal role mindset plays in achieving it. He draws an analogy with gravity—an invisible yet undeniable force—emphasizing that mastering a craft is not just about skill execution but about developing a profound understanding of oneself. Michael also discusses the concept of FOPO- fear of other people's opinions- and its effect on boldness and high performance. He delves into the neurological underpinnings of our desire for social acceptance and the psychological tug-of-war between the need for belonging and the pursuit of authenticity. Tune in for an inspiring call to overcome the weight of societal expectations, highlighting the power of truth-telling and the courage required to step into our authentic selves towards peak performance. Greg Cruse is no stranger to surfing. He's been participating in the sport since he was middle school-aged and was on one of the original high school surf teams in Huntington Beach, California, that was part of the genesis of the National Scholastic Surfing Association. He later became active in the administration of the sport for years, reorganizing Surfing America into USA Surfing when the organization earned national governing body in stats in 2017 in the lead up to the Tokyo Games. Surfing was one of several sports to make its Olympics debut in Tokyo but it's of course not new to the sporting world. The question for surfing, though, like other new entrants to the program such as skateboarding and climbing that have their own unique cultures, is how the sports would adapt to the international requirements that the Olympics demand. The answer is that is adapted very well. Carissa Moore earned gold for the U.S. women, becoming the first athlete to win gold the sport at the Games. And while there were early concerns about the surf itself, it turns out the waves were just fine for competition. Getting to that point however was another challenge entirely, one that involved real estate negotiations for the camp that the U.S. team called home and logistics that included converting a shipping container into a pizza kitchen and even sending a Jacuzzi for Team USA athletes to use once they were in Japan. In this conversation, SportsTravel Editor and Publisher Jason Gewirtz talks with Cruse about how all of those logistics went down, how cities can get involved in hosting more events even if they aren't near an ocean, and how the sport intends to capitalize on its new wave of momentum. Brandon Lowery was a professional athlete…but not in the sports he loved most. While he leaned into skate, snow, and surf, Brandon's athletic ability aimed him toward a professional soccer life in Europe. A crash ended his soccer career and left him wheelchair bound for two years. Brandon is CEO of USA Surfing, the national federation for the sport of surfing in the USA. As president of the Global Action Sports Foundation, Brandon works to advance the support of action sports. He also develops private equity ventures, mixed-use real estate, and community programs. He's also a global ambassador for Lululemon. In this episode of What I Wish I Knew with Mike Irwin & Simon Daw, Brandon talks about the lessons of culture and community he learned from sports and travel, the value of listening to understand others, and overcoming belief systems. Following his soccer career, he moved to Australia where he started a private equity firm and built support for action sport as well as young leaders. The chemistry that goes into a partnership is so important. It's so vital to know that other person both on and off the court." - @kellyclaes3 http://bit.ly/wfpodcast "Any type of a rotational athlete that's unilateral - a pitcher, quarterback, or volleyball player, there are inherent dangers to only playing with one side of your body. Whether right handed or left handed, we use one side of the body differently than the other. So, I encourage all my athletes to be ambidextrous and use both sides of their body because the body will become more balanced that way." - Dr. Tim Brown "My love of video games is what makes me 'me' and I think everybody's interests are different and whatever you love, you speak more passionately about, you do better at it, and those are the things that you should advocate for and do. Don't try to be anybody else. If you see somebody else being successful in a field, but it's not your passion, then don't try to copy them just because they're doing it. Do what you love." - Kelly Claes "It's just a matter of taking the imbalances that volleyball creates and that life has created in Kelly and testing her body through movement methods that allow me to understand what's been overused and overstretched versus what's been underused and undertoned. In the areas that are underused and undertoned, I create length and circulation to allow Kelly and others like her to move towards that symmetry that we never, ever reach." - Dr. Tim Brown "Being fearlessly authentic means becoming comfortable with yourself. It is recognizing that you are unique and your path is unique. Most people don't want to walk down the same path that others have walked before so they choose to be bold and take a different approach to things and that's what we need to celebrate with future generations. That's what's going to help us grow as a community." - Dr. Tim Brown "It didn't really click with me until I was a Junior at the university that there were a lot more factors to wellness. I would wear the Intelliskin a lot to study and to get my posture in check, but I didn't really think about food as a huge factor or how sleep and recovery can greatly affect your performance. There are so many little nuances to wellness and I began to integrate that focus into my life." - Kelly Claes Links From Today's Show Kelly Claes Facebook Twitter Instagram Dr. Tim Brown Facebook LinkedIn Intelliskin Facebook Twitter Instagram IntelliSkin & Wellness Force Partnership USC Women's Beach Volleyball - Kelly Claes Team USA - Kelly Claes SANDCAST No. 3: It’s finally (finally) video-game season for Kelly Claes Sara Hughes & Kelly Claes: Set to Become The Next Superstars of Beach Volleyball Stand Up Tall: IntelliSkin Posture Apparel Put to the Test Why Intelliskin? Erik Logan returns to the Paddlewoo Podcast. Erik is the President of the Oprah Winfrey Network and is using his business accumen to steer the sport of paddle surfing in the right direction. He's a board member of USA Surfing and in our discussion explains where the our sport is headed on a national level, the industry trends he's seeing now and of course... what he's riding.
Harley Taich is a professional surfer who overcame a severe case of post-concussion syndrome and depression after wiping out in a competition back in 2011. This was just after reaching her goal of earning a spot on the USA Surfing team as a 15 year old until this concussion ended her competitive surfing career. She recently authored a concussion book for children called “Heads Up! The Story of Finn and Reef." The book educates children about concussions, healing, and most importantly about acceptance, which is something she’s struggled with during her recovery. Her compelling story has also been featured in Seventeen Magazine and I know it will also resonate with our listeners. In episode 35, Harley takes us through her journey to surfing stardom which started from a very early age. Before talking about her concussion we discussed some common injuries in the sport of surfing and what health and safety measures are taken to take care of the athletes during competitions. Most injuries in the sport come from accidental contact with the board, specifically the fins. This contact generally results in skin lacerations. Harley suffered from a seemingly endless list of post-concussion symptoms after her accident in 2011. These symptoms forced her out of school and left her feeling depressed, isolated and hopeless. She tried nearly every treatment and remedy to no avail, which ultimately brought her to a point where she contemplated taking her own life. However, Harley found the inner-strength and courage to fight through her symptoms. She did this through acceptance of her injury and a willingness to give up the one thing she loved most, the water, for what turned out to be an entire year. During this time, Harley devoted a lot of her energy to researching nutritional choices, which contributed to improving her symptoms. Recipes that she has developed can be found on her blog, which is listed in the links at the bottom of the page. If you have kids or know of kids who could benefit from Harley's book, you can purchase a copy of "Heads Up!" using the link below. Experience is the best teacher. Where Can You Find Harley?
