Welcome Back to The Stuffer Club: Trauma and Human Performance This episode may be our best one of the season so far! This week Doc's Sarah and Alyse chat about everyone's elephant in the room: trauma. Human Performance Optimization teams and programs often have the honor of working with the most elite and highest of high performers in tactical. What makes or breaks these high performers? One word: trauma. This episode offers a variety of different views and discussion around trauma in human performance and what to do with it. We get deep about different unconventional or maybe less often thought of strategies to address trauma in the tactical and high performer setting, what microtraumas are and how they contribute to overall trauma, and are favorite: how to team integrate MSK and MH to intervene with holistic and effective coping techniques. We define mindful avoidance and how that allows tactical members to heal. Some take homes:1 in 5 people exposed to trauma have PTSD as a result.30% of those exposed to combat have some sort of psychological post traumatic affect. Trauma needs to healed from mental health just as much as a broken bone needs to be healed for physical health. Positive coping mechanisms are mental health's version of axillary crutches :)You can still have trauma responses up to 2 years after being removed from an environment with a toxic leader. Fear avoidance = a type of proprioception Come hang out with us!  If you like what you hear, leave us a 5- star rating and subscribe! What is the journey like to move from enlisting in the Navy at age 17, being recruited into the SEALs instead of going to law school, then serving as a SEAL Team member for twenty years, leading combat missions and helping to design and test new special operations capabilities while becoming a combat-decorated officer and later instructor, to next becoming an entrepreneur, novelist and nonfiction author, CEO and Chief Strategy Officer, Portfolio Manager, sought-after media expert and keynote speaker, while being a father of five and beating cancer – twice? Well, that's what Marty Strong will be discussing in this episode, and how to apply what he's learned, to your life and work. But let me first tell you a little bit more about Marty. In the Navy, he served as Former Task Unit Commander and Ops Boss, was a member of SEAL Team Two and SEAL Team Four, and was Leading Chief Petty Officer at the Naval Special Warfare Center in Coronado. He's traveled to over forty countries, and been shot-at in a few. Marty is currently the CEO of three companies within an ESOP-enterprise structure and he runs his own consulting firm. He's appeared on CNN, Fox News, Inside Edition, and was a featured expert on two History Channel documentaries. In all, Marty has over 400 TV and radio interviews to his credit.  Marty has taken the thread of leadership to stitch together the fabric of his vibrant, albeit challenging career and life. There is so much we covered in this episode – leadership, overcoming adversity, BUDs and being a SEAL Team Member and instructor, author, entrepreneur, and more. We also covered mindset, adaptation, and improvising, black swans, flow state a la Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, business leadership during crisis, motivation and the courage required to excel, and how to see risk as opportunity for accelerated outcomes. Marty certainly lives his life in full, and in the service of others in so many ways. This is a great conversation with an amazing leader.

We're back for round 2 with the one and only Dr. Sean O'Mara! We get into much greater detail than last time on things like visceral fat, physical markers of disease that track better than certain blood markers, the importance of physical appearance, optimal thriving diet for humans, and much more like how to lose visceral fat, how to heal your brain, the importance of sprinting, why we don't revere our elderly as much anymore, immune system, the microbiome, avoiding viruses, and beyond.   This is a really great one and I'd recommend catching it on YouTube (embedded below) so you can see all the great visuals he shares with us.   Here are the photos: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/cwvqtgz6g5snopf/AAByOIUZdPnpER4XmgnoG1cYa?dl=0   Dr. Sean O’Mara is a Performance and Longevity MD/Researcher, Speaker , and 2016 NSF Grant Recipient. He runs MedCon Wellness - A unique Executive and Professional Athlete practice innovatively exploiting both science and nature along with proprietary technology to achieve "Best In Class" results in Reversing Chronic Disease as well as Human Performance Optimization. They are dedicated experienced physicians, researchers, PhD's and Coaches coordinating their work to improve client's health. They have developed their practice after years of medical and scientific research as well as years of ultra-high-end concierge medical care.   They maintain an exceptionally small practice for clients to ensure an incomparably high level of service. They operate a Non-Profit to return excess profits to continue what we believe is critically important: the continued Reversal of Chronic Disease and Human Performance Optimization. Very few physicians today are concerned with either of these but it is his passion. It is the only Executive Health practice in the world to have received a National Science Foundation grant awarded in 2016 for their work on Reversing Chronic Disease.     GET THE FREE SAPIEN FOOD GUIDE! http://Sapien.org GET THE MEAT! http://NosetoTail.org Just to remind everyone, I don’t have any sponsors. So far I’ve turned them all down so I can remain independent from any outside interests. I have my own beneficial products and services we offer at Http://Sapien.org and http://nosetotail.org to support the show, the film, myself, and my great team. I make a lot less money this way, but it’s a lot more satisfying to not have to rely on anyone else or promote any other products.   However, it only works if people support Sapien and Nose to Tail. Luckily we have amazing things to offer. Sapien is the health platform I’ve built with my business partner Dr. Gary. We have a practice in Woodland Hills, CA as well as an online program anyone in the world can join if they’re serious about weight loss and disease reversal using diet and lifestyle. You can find out more about the program at http://Sapien.org You can also get the free Sapien Food guide there. Another thing we’ve got going is the Sapien Tribe. We have a growing community of people who are living this lifestyle and dominating life. I know that sounds pretty bro-ey, but it’s what is happening. People have gone from a life of mediocrity or even ill-health to being in top shape, reversing their chronic disease, having great body composition, and not getting sick anymore! Tribe members also get all the extras like the bonus episodes of this podcast, the extended show notes, the private members area, and special access and live Zoom calls with Dr. Gary and me. You can find that at http://sapien.org as well.   You can also get the Nose to Tail meats at http://nosetotail.org where we ship grass finished, ethically and sustainably raised beef, buffalo, pork, and chicken to your door. As someone who used to work with explosives for a living and has trained physically throughout his career as a member of Special Operations teams, Josh Duntz is no stranger to physical and mental stress. In today’s episode we catch up about his transition from the Navy's Explosive Ordnance Disposal community via a remote-work sales role facilitated by the DoD Skill Bridge program. Josh and I recorded our first conversation in August of 2019 while he was still on Active Duty. I wanted to follow up with Josh now to hear about his experiences and offer listeners some insight into how this program works. At the end of his fellowship, Josh made the decision to transition again and chose entrepreneurship as his path. He is now working hard to launch Stasis, a Human Performance Optimization company focused on delivering high-tech, self-serve ice baths to gym owners and other fitness practitioners. We discuss how Josh and his team are inventing new technology and software which allows users to pay by the minute to jump in an ice bath at their local gym or health club, versus the far more expensive and liquid nitrogen based cryosauna offered elsewhere. Through a combination of technology innovation, facilitated by a mobile app, Josh is trying to offer customers a way to expose themselves to healthy stress without needing to pay for an expensive membership or subscription. We talk about the benefits of cryotherapy, and the advantages of a cold-water bath treatment versus the more expensive liquid nitrogen based cryosauna, as well as how routine exposure to stress can create a buffer to deal with the slings and arrows of everyday life.

Heads 'N Tales Podcast - Talking Sports Injury Rehab, Prevention, Perseverance, Concussions & Athlete Transition

Johnny Owens is a Physical Therapist who currently serves as the Director of Education at Owens Recovery Science. Previously, Johnny spent 10 years as the Chief of Human Performance Optimization at the Center for the Intrepid (See Video Below).  Here he treated service members, including Ryan Miller from Episode 79, who suffered severe musculoskeletal trauma. I heard Johnny speak at the AMSSM conference this past May in San Diego and was amazed by the incredible knowledge he was sharing on Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) and the implications it has for athletes recovering from injury.  Johnny has been published extensively for his work with BFR in the peer reviewed literature and his work has been featured on 60 Minutes, Time Magazine, NPR, Discovery Channel and ESPN.  I have no doubt many of the athletes who listen to this episode can benefit one way or another by adding BFR to their rehab protocol or training regimen. As many of you know, I have been rehabbing from an Osteochonral Autograft Transfer (OATs) surgery I elected to have back in January of 2016.  I have been struggling with moderate to severe kneecap pain and atrophy  since 6 months out from surgery.  The pain has diminished greatly since working with Dr. Danielle Clarke over at Parabolic Performance and Rehab in Little Falls, NJ. However, when I heard Johnny talk about BFR at the AMSSM conference I first thought, I need to get this guy on the podcast and then thought, this could be a potential solution to my lingering knee pain! Johnny told me he thought I would be a good candidate for BFR training. For athletes like me who can't build muscle through lifting heavy loads because it is painful, the anaerobic properties of BFR training have been found to stimulate a similar biological response in the muscle with much lighter weights.  In the above picture, I am performing a step-up with a slow eccentric descent.  Trust me, you have never felt muscle fatigue until you have tried BFR.  It's a deep burn (Insert Ron Burgundy voice).  The single leg squat on the Total Gym is by far the most difficult and uncomfortable, but after having limited use of my quad for over a year, it's also glorious. Since recording this episode with Johnny I have been doing BFR on my leg for the past 3 weeks at Edge Physical Therapy & Sports Medici

Since working with Lawrence and Johanns at Edge, I can definitely feel a big difference in the strength of my left leg. Normally when I go out for a ride on my road bike or do some intervals on an Assault Bike, my non-surgically repaired right leg feels like it is doing all the work.  However, I feel much more symmetrical in the last couple rides and workouts I have done. I am excited to see the progress in the coming weeks.  Keep an eye out for some videos on social media of my BFR training. Below you will find notes on my interview with the BFR legend himself, Johnny Owens: BFR is an individualized tourniquet system and is meant to reduce blood flow into an extremity. If you are able to exercise at a low blood flow, you can use lighter weights to get similar results that you would expect from lifting heavy weights. BFR isn't as new of an idea as you might think. Early physiology studies from decades ago look into anaerobic muscle response. Yoshiaki Sato noticed bigger pump effect with BFR. Population Perfect for person recovering from injury because those patients cant handle heavy loads. Geriatric population. Battling sarcopenia after 50, body doesn’t respond to muscle protein synthesis. Athletes in season, won’t beat up the body. Dwight Howard video Both lower tourniquet pressures have an effect and high pressures have an effect. Why not just use a tourniquet? Clinically you can’t ignore the tourniquet literature. Wide and tapered devices to avoid pressure gradients. Contraindications list: Cardiovascular compromised Cancer “Sick person List” Young pediatrics Certification process Over 1000 certified providers Medical License is required PT, OT, ATC, MD Teaching how to use tourniquets.
