We've been talking about it for nearly 2 years and it only took the threat of the next book club for Jaina to finally convinced Elias to read the 2010 "Taskmaster" mini-series. Spoilers: I liked it! Much like the last Van Lente series. Well, maybe not quite like that one. In this episode, we discuss the series written by Fred van Lente, illustrated by Jefte Palo, colored by Jean-Francois Beaulieu and lettered by Dave Lanphear and it's many successes and oh so many flaws. It...has not aged like fine wine. Or is it like week old baklava at a greek diner?Wait. What was I writing about again? Hold on. I have to eat some chicken souvlaki.If you are reading along with our book club, our next big read begins, starting with the first 10 (not 11) issues of Jack Kirby's "Eternals" from 1976. Expectations are one of these fluffy social science topics, but when you look closer you actually realize how important they are in innovation and sustainability transition processes. The energy transition is fundamentally influenced by expectations that we have towards specific solutions and modes of operations. We set up financial incentives, change policies, and invest into research, because we expect that wind power, solar PV or hydrogen can blaze the trail towards a low carbon economy. If we would not have these expectations, we would not move a thumb. Expectations are also important in the start up world. Start ups normally don't have products, but only ideas, and they get funding and press coverage not because on the results of their actions, but on the expectations that they will build the next big thing. Hence, today we look at expectations. For this episode I invited Prof. Harro van Lente from University of Maastricht who is known as one of, if not the father of the sociology of expectations. First we define what expectations are and how the differ from visions, imaginaries and representations. Then we discuss how expectations shape socio-technical transitions as a whole and energy transitions in particular. And in the end we talk about how you as member of an organization, a start up or as policy makers can actually make use of the expectations related knowledge that you will have gotten when you listen to this podcast. In this week's episode of Off Panel, the writer/artist pair of Fred Van Lente and Ryan Dunlavey join the show to chat about their partnership and current Kickstarter for The Comic Book History of Animation. Van Lente and Dunlavey discuss their meet cute, how they became "history guys," how they pick their subjects, making history comics pop, why they wanted to tell the history of animation, how they split the eras, the process for them on projects, why they went with Kickstarter, the volume of comics being released today, marketing a Kickstarter, and much more.

You may recall from last episode that Marvel Zombies was conceived by Mark Millar (Kickass, Kingsmen, Wanted, Nemesis, Starlight, and The Magic Order). After his initial Ultimate Fantastic Four storyline "Crossover," he gave over the Zombies imprint to Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead, Invincible) and Sean Phillips (Judge Dredd, Hellblazer, Sleeper, Criminal, Incognito, Fatale). After Millar, Kirkman, and Phillips moved on, the franchise was picked up by Fred Van Lente (Cowboys & Aliens, Archer & Armstrong, X-Men: Noir) who actually helmed the title longer than anyone else. Artist, Kev Walker (2000 AD, Rogue Trooper, Dungeons & Dragons), took over on the penciling and gave a more modern style to Phillips' muted, classic method. Though there are some familiar faces Van Lente's cast of characters such as Deadpool and Howard the Duck, the others are much more niche than his predecessors: Machine Man, Morbius, Jennifer Kale, Man Thing, Werewolf by Night, and Daimon Hellstrom. The Inhumans also appear, with a gutsy end for the beloved, teleporting Lackjaw. In Marvel Zombies Return, Van Lente had help from many other prolific writers in the genre. David Wellington is both a college friend of Fred Van Lente and a prolific horror author, having penned vampire novels starring vampire hunter Laura Caxton and a zombie apocalypse trilogy: Monster Island, Monster Nation, and Monster Planet. Jonathan Maberry, is not only the author of Punisher MAX: Naked Kill and Black Panther. He also wrote the novel, Ghost Road Blues, which won a Bram Stoker award. His follow-up novel, Patient Zero, is what ultimately got him the writing assignment for Marvel Zombies. Seth Grahame-Smith is best known for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Jake touches on Marvel Zombies: Evil Evolution, which involves the Marvel Apes franchise, but since he hates it, he does not belabor the point. We round off the episode talking about Marvel Zombies 5, Marvel Zombies: Supreme, Marvel Zombies Destroy!, Marvel Zombies Halloween, Zombies Assemble, and DCeased (which, yeah-- obviously isn't Marvel, but is interesting enough to warrant a comment or two). In this Fanbase Feature, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief Barbra Dillon talks with award-winning writer Fred Van Lente (Archer & Armstrong, Marvel Zombies, Action Philosophers) on the debut of his new novel, Ten Dead Comedians, from Quirk Books. Dillon and Van Lente discuss how his writing career began, transitioning to various storytelling mediums as a writer, his approach to combining satire and murder mystery for Ten Dead Comedians, and much more.

The Two Guys with PhDs (talking about comics) are back with another Publisher Spotlight episode. This time they are focusing on Dynamite Entertainment, specifically the new Gold Key comics that they have been reviving: Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, by Greg Pak and Mirko Colak; Magnus: Robot Fighter, by Fred Van Lente and Cory Smith; Solar: Man of the Atom, by Frank J. Barbiere and Joe Bennett; and Doctor Spektor: Master of the Occult, by Mark Waid and Neil Edwards. They discuss the new series in the order in which they've been introduced, and the guys even comment on Dynamite's strategy of staggering releases and not just publishing everything at once, much like Valiant did with their new revived titles a couple of years ago. Andy is more familiar with the original Gold Key comics, at least most of them, than Derek, so when they can they point out the similarities and differences between the recent comics and their earlier manifestations from Gold Key, Valiant, Acclaim, and Dark Horse.  The guys definitely have their preferences — e.g., they love Van Lente's humor in Magnus, they appreciate both Van Lente and Waid's send up of reality television, they're curious where Barbiere is going with Solar's daughter, and while they're not big fantasy/Conan fans, they do like what Pak and Colak have done with Turok — and much of this comes out in their discussion. Overall, they really like what Dynamite is doing with their recent revival and look forward to seeing how it unfolds…and how things may all come together (as we are teased in the first issue of Doctor Spektor). On this episode of The Comics Alternative Interviews, Andy and Derek speak with writer Fred Van Lente. They begin by asking him about his work on the recent Dark Horse title, Brain Boy — a revamp of the short-lived 1960s character — and how he translated the title for a contemporary audience. Van Lente also shares a bit of insight into his upcoming reboot of Magnus: Robot Fighter, part of Dynamite Entertainment's new Gold Key line, as well as his plans for the new Action Presidents series. The Two Guys also talk with Fred about his run on Archer and Armstrong and the early humorous titles he created with Ryan Dunlavey, the comics that really put him on the map: Action Philosophers and The Comic Book History of Comics. They spend a lot of time focusing on Fred's special sense of humor, his meticulous research, and his melding of abstract thoughts and tangible — and very entertaining — storytelling. All in all, Derek and Andy had a good time talking with the acclaimed author…and their conversation ended right when Fred needed to take his shepherd's pie out of the oven. The Two Guys are  nothing if not timely!
