Despite having worked (written and/or illustrated) for most of the major comic publishers, Kevin VanHook is probably best known for his work at Valiant in the early 90s. He co-created Bloodshot, and contributed to books like The Visitor, Eternal Warrior, and Solar: Man of the Atom, among many others. But comics are only part of his career. Kevin also has a successful film career, working as a writer, director, producer, and visual effects artist and supervisor. He's worked on Daredevil, I, Robot, and Miss Congeniality, to name a few. His 2008 documentary on make-up effects includes interviews with make-up legends Rob Bottin and Dick Smith, as well as John Carpenter and George A. Romero. His most recent comics work was with DC, writing Superman and Batman vs. Vampires and Werewolves and an Oracle mini-series. This is a fun one, ladies and gents -- enjoy!__________________________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Join us as we dig into anything and everything surrounding the Valiant Classic series SOLAR, MAN OF THE ATOM!
I continue to explore the Batman Family corner of the DC Universe with veteran writer / artist Dan Jurgens. Among Dan's vast body of work is the 1992 classic Death of Superman, his run on Thor, Captain America and The Sensational Spider-Man. Dan is also the creator of the classic characters Doomsday and Booster Gold. I check in with Dan to see how he is faring during the coronavirus pandemic and how he managed to safely connect with local fans at a Minnesota comic shop during a recent signing event. Dan is working with former collaborator Sean Chen, one of the current artists on Batman Beyond. I asked Sean in advance to comment on working with Dan and shared his feedback. Both creators have in common working for Valiant Comics during the 1990s. Dan reflects on a few highlights while writing Solar Man of the Atom. Dan explains why every comic he writes still contains enough exposition to make the issue accessible to new readers. We talk about comic book anniversaries and how they have lost some of their luster with the increasing frequency of these milestone issues. Dan explains what is key for him to make an issue worthy of containing extra pages that demand a higher price tag. Dick Grayson returns as the titular hero in Nightwing this fall with issue #75. Dick lost his memory from a gunshot to the head by KGBeast back in Batman #55 and his struggle continued beginning with Nightwing #50. Dan took over the reigns writing Nightwing with issue #59. He explains his approach to keeping the series a Nightwing comic book until the return of Dick Grayson as Nightwing. Both Terry McGinnis in Batman Beyond and Dick Grayson in Nightwing suffered from memory loss. Is there a connection between the two? I ask Dan's his thoughts on Superman not being consider for another solo film, Henry Cavill in the title role and the upcoming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice Zak Snyder Cut. The final chapter of the Death of Superman was illustrated entirely with single panel pages. What ever happened to the original art from Superman #75? When I Kick Back With the Creator, I ask Dan about his favorite birthday which digresses into a discussion of 8-track tapes. For his island book Dan picks an ideal comic omnibus. All this and more is in this installment of Creator Talks. Creator Talks Theme Song: "Jazz Relax" by LoopsLab Please rate and review Creator Talks on Apple Podcasts More about Dan Jurgens

Hello and welcome to twentieth episode of Fanboy Nation’s Toon-In-Talk, your rendezvous for animation interviews. Whitney loves comic books and graphic novels, so when she’s not watching cartoons she’s reading comics. One of her favorite cartoon sagas is the DC Animated Universe, including the fabulous cartoons Static Shock and Batman: The Animated Series. Whitney had the luck to speak with Joseph Phillip Illidge, who helped shaped the hero Static at Milestone Media and also reinvigorated he Batman comic book series. Joseph continues to write and edit comics as well as expanding his talents into other creative endeavors. Show Notes Joseph is a writer, editor, and columnist. He writes a column at ComicResources.com called “The Mission” about diversity in comic books, he is currently the writer of the graphic novel The Ren published by First Second, and writes the series Solar Man. Whitney is a huge fan of the DC Animated Universe hero, Static Shock. The founders of Milestone Media created static in the 1990s. Joseph had the awesome opportunity to work at Milestone and with Static. Joseph and Whitney discuss about Static’s character was a great superhero, and identifiable for teenagers. Joseph was an editor at DC during the Batman: No Man’s Land He delves into exciting details about how he shaped Batman as a series as well as the characters. This is one of Whitney’s favorite sagas in Batman They discuss how the Joker has changed from his incarnations during No Man’s Land to the current version in the New 52. Both Whitney and Joseph agree the Joker has gone in some extreme directions. The Suicide Squad is going to take Harley Quinn to new levels. The movie will be a good test to see whether or not if DC can face-off against Disney’s Marvel Entertainment. The Ren is a teenage love story about a young bass player from Georgia who moves to Harlem, New York with dreams to become a famous musician and he falls in love with young dancer. It’s about what they go through from 1925-1926. It was written due to the lack of black romance graphic novels in the medium. Joseph explains about the lack of graphic novels starring characters of non-European ancestry, how he wants to expand the offering, and some of his favorite graphics novels that do fit this niche. Whitney talks about her own graphic novel and wanting to see more heroine-centric comics sans romance. As comic geeks always do, Whitney and Joseph suggest titles to read to each other. Joseph declares a desire for a better and friendlier comic book industry.
The late, legendary Stan Lee helped reboot and recreate the superhero SOLARMAN for a very, very, VERY short-lived comic book series, and a failed cartoon pilot about dweeby comic book nerd whose dad wishes he was more into sports, and who turns into a fantabulous hunk of a hero! He teams up with a stupid robot and fights a bad guy who uses a death ray that destroys suns to save up for the day when he REALLY tries to be evil. SOLARMAN can be easily defeated by a slightly cloudy day, but was he... CANCELED TOO SOON? William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold delve into this failed pilot, which was made in 1986, released in 1989 and then re-released in 1992 (just in case), and figure out what the heck is up with it. Is SOLARMAN a great hero who got overlooked by history, or is he just kinda lame? You'll find out as our MARVELOUS MONTH OF MARVELS continues! Copyright 2018 - The Energy Show, Barry Cinnamon We take it for granted that you can install solar on your home or business anytime, just as you can make any other energy saving improvement. Unfortunately, the reality is there are a host of restrictions on solar and battery storage. Many of these restrictions are due to arbitrary regulations (solar panels cannot be visible from the street), as well as rules promulgated by utilities to maximize their profits. Riddle me this, Solarman: why does your local utility encourage you to install an 8 kw EV charger, but makes it extremely complicated (sometimes impossible) to install a 2 kw rooftop solar system? Incumbent industries have economic power behind them. Utilities spend hundreds of millions of dollars to suppress competition from rooftop solar, compared to the million or so dollars spent by most state solar industries. But polls show that 95% of the population favors solar. Although the solar industry is at a financial disadvantage, there are tens of millions of people in the U.S. that benefit - either directly or indirectly - from the solar industry. The challenge is organizing this grass roots army to advocate for cleaner and and more affordable energy sources. The Solar Rights Alliance was founded to empower these millions of solar citizens. Its mantra is everyone should have the right to generate his or her own power directly from the sun -- and that no monopoly or special interest should try to block or own the sun. Our special guest on this week's Energy Show is Dave Rosenfeld, Executive Director of the Solar Rights Alliance. He's spent his career building movements and institutions that expand freedom, liberty and justice including work with the National Public Radio, The Public Interest Research Group, and the Public Interest Network. Grass roots advocacy has been effective in making many big changes in our democracy, and Dave is working hard to deploy this growing army of solar enthusiasts to make solar cost effective and available to everyone.

Then Derek heads to the shared table of Gabriel Dunston and Aaron Walther -- which is almost next to The Comics Alternative's table! He talks with Gabe about Kickstarter and his work on the second Purgatory Pub book, and then he learns about Aaron's series, Zero's Heroes and Science Hero. Then, in one of the highlights of the con, Derek makes Ryan Browne laugh before learning the sad news that God Hates Astronauts will soon be going on hiatus. Following Ryan's talk, Jamal Igle discusses the new Molly Danger series as well as his work at Action Lab Studios, and then Frank Barbiere shares some word about the secrets to his prolific output...Five Ghosts, White Suits, Black Market, and Solar: Man of Action, anyone? Then, in the last hours of this year's HeroesCon, Derek is able to talk with Kyle Starks about his experiences after Sexcastle, with Jeremy Whitley about Princeless and ethnoracial issues in comics, and with Matthew Roberts about art and the success of Manifest Destiny.

The Two Guys with PhDs (talking about comics) are back with another Publisher Spotlight episode. This time they are focusing on Dynamite Entertainment, specifically the new Gold Key comics that they have been reviving: Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, by Greg Pak and Mirko Colak; Magnus: Robot Fighter, by Fred Van Lente and Cory Smith; Solar: Man of the Atom, by Frank J. Barbiere and Joe Bennett; and Doctor Spektor: Master of the Occult, by Mark Waid and Neil Edwards. They discuss the new series in the order in which they've been introduced, and the guys even comment on Dynamite's strategy of staggering releases and not just publishing everything at once, much like Valiant did with their new revived titles a couple of years ago. Andy is more familiar with the original Gold Key comics, at least most of them, than Derek, so when they can they point out the similarities and differences between the recent comics and their earlier manifestations from Gold Key, Valiant, Acclaim, and Dark Horse. The guys definitely have their preferences — e.g., they love Van Lente's humor in Magnus, they appreciate both Van Lente and Waid's send up of reality television, they're curious where Barbiere is going with Solar's daughter, and while they're not big fantasy/Conan fans, they do like what Pak and Colak have done with Turok — and much of this comes out in their discussion. Overall, they really like what Dynamite is doing with their recent revival and look forward to seeing how it unfolds…and how things may all come together (as we are teased in the first issue of Doctor Spektor). Plus, the guys share listener mail that they've recently received. Keep ‘em coming!
Clear your plates for an extra-large serving of Off the Racks, in which we offer our thoughts on this year's Flash Annual (#3), Solar: Man of the Atom #1 from Dynamite Entertainment, and the whopping 64-page first issue of the latest volume of Amazing Spider-Man. (Warning: Product may contain SPOILERS!) (1:31:15)
Bobby introduces a new segment to the show this week, which we will tentatively and possibly permanently title the Lightning Round. These are the books that we talk about a LOT but don’t want to just brush off to the side just because we talk about them so much. Make sense? Each of your hosts have 3-minutes to quickly talk about all the other books that don’t fall under their be all and end all Books of the Week for this week. For the first beta test of this segment, some of the books discussed are: All-New X-Factor, Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, D4VE, Hulk, Cleopatra in Space, Black Canary and Zatanna: Bloodspell, Solar: Man of the Atom All-New Ghost Rider, Sinestro and Batman. And then for our regular Book of the Week segment, the gang bring up some fancy comics like: Dakota North, Adventures of Superman #50, Captain Action Cat, The Adventures of Business Cat, Transformers: Windblade, Superior Spider-Man, Joyners in 3D, Nowhere Men, Batman Eternal and more. For the main part of the show, there’s no specific topic but we have another week of listener questions. Ha cha cha! We’ve been taking the majority of the questions directly from the forum (if you’re not signed up there, you should be!) but we went to Twitter and Facebook and answer as many of the questions you submitted as possible. PHEW!

A simple start -- discussing Ike Turner, Batman: The Brave and the Bold Season One, Part One DVD and Bruce Timm's take on the character, THB: Comics from Mars #2 from Paul Pope and AdHouse Books, our preliminary, off-the-cuff picks for the forthcoming 2010 11 O'Closcars (Earth One, Afrodisiac from AdHouse, Batman: Odyssey, The Sixth Gun from Oni Press, Action Comics, Walking Dead, American Vampire, Daytripper, Asylum Press' Fearless Dawn from Steve Mannion, Top Cow's Artifacts and Ron Marz, Fred Van Lente, Greg Pak, First Wave, Solar: Man of the Atom, G.I. Complete and utter chaos...
The four gospels, the symbolism of the birth of John the Baptist, and the birth of Christ. Lecture quote: "Epiphania is the manifestation of the divine essence of Christ within the human being, or the ascension of the christic solar energy through the spinal column of the initiate, as represented by the Magi. Epiphania! talks about the way in which the human being manifests the only begotten Light—from the unknowable abstract space—which in the Greek language is called Christ. The Cosmic Drama—that is, the Birth, Life, Crucifixion, Death, Resurrection and Ascension of the Cosmic Christ, which is always performed in every single cosmic unit (planet) in the universe—has to be repeated in each one of us, in order for us to attain the level of the Solar Man or True Human Being. The Gospels were written so that the initiates can understand and comprehend the steps." Read the lecture transcription.
