Happy Halloween from Unnatural Selection! This month Audrey and Emma face one of the spookiest things known to podcaster: historical fiction from the early 2010's. Listen along as Emma's brain full of facts short circuits as the pair tear apart Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith and its 2012 adaptation. We ask questions everyone else is too afraid to, like “Did this even need to be Abraham Lincoln?” and “Was there a single sensitivity reader looking at the slavery plot?” as well as “Hey is that the guy from Mama Mia?” and many more!   Content warnings for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter include: vampire-standard gore, racism, slavery, death of a child, death of a family member, death of a loved one, politics, and a shocking amount of actual Lincoln facts.    The articles and book Emma references in this episode can be found here: https://ew.com/article/2012/06/29/abraham-lincoln-vampire-hunter-2/ https://www.fangoria.com/qa-seth-grahame-smith-vampire-scripter/ https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/562046/shakespeare-in-a-divided-america-by-james-shapiro/   You can find Emma on twitter @ematsca and the show @UnselectPod. A sequel to Beetlejuice (1988) and the second film of the Beetlejuice franchise, the film stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O'Hara reprising their roles alongside new cast members Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Jenna Ortega, and Willem Dafoe. Set over three decades after the first Beetlejuice, it follows Lydia Deetz, now a mother, struggling to keep her family together in the wake of a loss as the specter Betelgeuse returns to haunt her. After the success of Beetlejuice, plans for a sequel were announced by The Geffen Film Company, its original producers, but did not materialize until 2011 when Warner Bros. Pictures hired Seth Grahame-Smith to pitch a story and went through numerous revisions before being shelved in late 2019 and eventually got revived three years later. Burton co-produced the film with Brad Pitt's studio Plan B Entertainment, and the casting process continued till early 2023. Principal photography, supervised by cinematographer Haris Zambarloukos, took place at parts of England and United States from May to November 2023, despite being suspended for four months due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. The official title was revealed in February 2024. During post-production, editing was handled by Jay Prychidny and the musical score was composed by longtime collaborator Danny Elfman.Beetlejuice Beetlejuice opened the 81st Venice International Film Festival on August 28, 2024, and was theatrically released overseas on September 4, 2024, and in the United States by Warner Bros. Episode 186!? This week we're switching things up and giving your thoughts on The Flash! The Flash is a 2023 American superhero film based on the DC character of the same name. Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Studios, Double Dream, and the Disco Factory, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, it is the 13th installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film is directed by Andy Muschietti from a screenplay by Christina Hodson and stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen / The Flash alongside Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon, Ron Livingston, Maribel Verdú, Kiersey Clemons, Antje Traue, and Michael Keaton. In the film, Barry travels back in time to prevent his mother's death, which brings unintended consequences. The development of a film based on The Flash began in the late 1980s, with multiple writers and directors attached to the project through 2014. The film was then redeveloped as a part of the DCEU, with Miller cast as the title character. Multiple directors were attached to the film over the following years, with Seth Grahame-Smith, Rick Famuyiwa, and the duo of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein all departing the project over creative differences. Muschietti and Hodson joined the film in July 2019, and pre-production began in January 2020. The film is influenced by the comic book storyline Flashpoint, featuring multiple DC characters, including Ben Affleck and Keaton reprising their respective versions of Batman. Principal photography took place from April to October 2021 at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden and on location around the United Kingdom. The Flash premiered at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on June 12, 2023, and was released in the United States on June 16, following multiple delays caused by director changes, the COVID-19 pandemic, post-production setbacks and controversies surrounding Miller. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for its plot, action sequences, humor, and performances (particularly of Miller and Keaton), but criticism for the quality of its visual effects and screenplay. I have been a fan of today's guest since I first saw his mind-blowing film, Night Watch years ago. Timur Bekmambetov is an established director, producer, and writer who has built a name for himself both in his home country, Russia, and here in the U.S., making films, music videos, and commercials. At first glance at his film, I became obsessed with Timur's work and his filmmaking style. He is the producer and director of Day Watch (2006), Wanted (2008), Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter (2012), Profile ( 2021), and many many more.Timur is a jack of all trades. His journey in the industry started with theater production design and soon he got the directing bug. While honing his directing skills, he took up producing which then led to movie production.  One of my favorite of his films is the genre-bending Wanted, starring Angelina Jolie, James McCovey, and Morgan Freeman.Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) is an office worker whose life is going nowhere. After his estranged father is murdered, he meets Fox (Angelina Jolie), who recruits him into the Fraternity, a secret society of assassins that takes its orders from Fate itself. Fox and Sloan (Morgan Freeman), the Fraternity's leader, teach Wesley to tap into dormant powers. Though he enjoys his newfound abilities, he begins to suspect that there is more to the Fraternity than meets the eye.Abraham Lincoln is reinvented as a vampire-killing president in this Timur Bekmambetov-directed action picture starring Benjamin Walker, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rufus Sewell, and Dominic Cooper. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies author Seth Grahame-Smith adapts his own book for 20th Century Fox. Tim Burton produces alongside Bekmambetov and Jim Lemley.Timur's latest project is Profile. The film was initially released in Russia in 2018 and is set to be released in the US on May 14, 2021.Based on Anna Erelle's non-fiction book, In The Skin of a Jihadist, the film contextualizes our digital life and fears. It explores the role of digital spaces in the recruitment of young European Women by ISIS. British journalist, Amy Whittaker sets on this investigation by creating a Facebook profile under the alias of Melody Nelson along with a persona online of a woman who has recently converted to Islam. The results are thrilling and eye-opening.Profile was shot in a new film language called Screenlife. What is Screenlife?Screenlife is a new format of visual content that has grown from independent projects to full-length, world-renowned films, documentaries, and TV shows. Its main idea is that everything that the viewer sees happens on the computer, tablet, or smartphone screen. All the events unfold directly on the screen of your device. Instead of a film set — there's a desktop, instead of the protagonist's actions — a cursor. If you are involved in video production, cinema, or even video games, Screenlife is a new expressive environment for you, the potential of which is yet to be discovered. Before your eyes, there will be new tools to work with, such as the screen life recorder.Bekmambetov produced the Screenlife film Unfriended, in which the action takes place on the screens of protagonists' computers. With a budget of only $1 million, the movie raised $64 million at the box office worldwide. This new film language is extremely exciting. Timur and I discuss Screenlife, his visual style, his directing process, Hollywood politics, and much more.Enjoy my conversation with Timur Bekmambetov.

He is the producer and director of Day Watch (2006), Wanted (2008), Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter (2012), Profile ( 2021) and many many more.Timur is a jack of all trade. His journey in the industry started with theater production design and soon he got the directing bug. While honing his directing skills, he took up producing which then led to movie production.  One of my favorite of his films is the genre bending Wanted, starring Angelina Jolie, James McCovey and Morgan Freeman.Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) is an office worker whose life is going nowhere. After his estranged father is murdered, he meets Fox (Angelina Jolie), who recruits him into the Fraternity, a secret society of assassins which takes its orders from Fate itself. What is Screenlife?Screenlife is a new format of visual content that has grown from independent projects to full-length, world-renowned films, documentaries and TV shows. Its main idea is that everything that the viewer sees happens on the computer, tablet or smartphone screen. All the events unfold directly on the screen of your device. Instead of film set — there's a desktop, instead of protagonist's actions — a cursor. If you are involved in video production, cinema or even video games, Screenlife is a new expressive environment for you, the potential of which is yet to be discovered. Before your eyes, there will be new tools to work with, such as the screenlife recorder.Bekmambetov produced the Screenlife film Unfriended, in which the action takes place on the screens of protagonists' computers. With a budget of only $1 million, the movie raised $64 million at the box office worldwide. This new film language is extremely exciting. Timur and I discuss Screenlife, his visual style, his directing process, Hollywood politics and much more.Enjoy my conversation with Timur Bekmambetov.

We realized pretty quickly that we had NO IDEA what we were talking about with Spank Me, Mr. Darcy by Lissa Trever. None of us here at What The Smut had even read the original. We knew we needed some serious help! Enter Adrienne the Librarian, a long-time friend of Kandy's a brilliant librarian, and a Jane Austen SUPERFAN that loves Pride and Prejudice. Adrienne shared her experience with Pride and Prejudice, talked about Jane Austen like she is an old friend, shared what she would have been reading herself, discussed some of the customs and fashions of the regency period, and then gave you the BEST mostest Librarianest ever pile of book recommendations. All of which are linked below! What would Jane read? Pride and Prejudice inspiration The Gothic novel like The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole was all the rage back in Jane's day. You can see the influence in her gothic satire Northanger Abbey. Clarissa: Or the History of a Young Lady by Samuel Richardson which is the story of a young woman that escapes a marriage she doesn't want and ends up a sex slave. The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling by Henry Fielding which is a bawdy adventure in which a young man strikes out to the city.   What would Elizabeth Bennet wear? As Adrienne pointed out and we have no doubt noted through the bajillions of Austen movies. Corsets were not really the thing during the Regency period. I found the idea that women would wet the inner layer of fabric on the dress amazing so I wanted more! I found two great online articles and one amazing book. First, check out Lithubs Tight Breeches and Loose Gowns. Then hop over to Fashion Era for a complete rundown of Regency dress and the dropping of the waistline. If you still need more you are going to want Dress in the Age of Jane Austen by Hilary Davidson.   What to read if you love Pride and Prejudice? If you like Regency check out the Queen of Regency Georgette Heyer. For something a bit more smutty try Tessa Dares Regency novels. A recent trend is moving the plot of Pride and Prejudice to a different culture. Adrienne recommends Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors by Sonali Dev it's set around an Indian family in Canada. She loves Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith because you can actually forget you are not reading the original. Don't miss The Austen Project's Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld which is a thoroughly modern retelling that places Liz as a magazine writer and Mr. Darcy as a neurosurgeon. She offers a couple of awesome Young Adult (YA) options as well. Pride: A Pride & Prejudice Remix by Ibi Zoboi set in the Bronx and discussing cultural identity, class, and gentrification. Pride and Premeditation by Tirzah Price is a Private Eye mystery.

Remix, mashup, sample, adaptation, parody, homage, knock-off. The lines between these, and so many other similar terms, are not always very clear. In one sense, all culture is a remix, nothing exists in a vacuum. On the other hand, some people may take a dim view of lifting almost the entire text of Pride & Prejudice and republishing it with additional zombie action. Which is where Seth Grahame-Smith’s best-selling 2009 classic, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, comes in. Because he's Batman.

During an interview with The Mirror, she expressed her frustration with the disconnect between DC's films and television series, why the Suicide Squad was axed from the show and more. "We were about season two when they started telling us we had to start basically killing off the Suicide Squad that we were starting to build on our own," Holland recalled. "We were actually trying to build that on our own on the show, and I guess once DC found out they were going to be doing their own movie of it, we had to ax all of the characters before we even got to show them, which was a little annoying at first.” Link: http://www.comicbookresources.com/article/willa-holland-calls-out-wb-for-shutting-down-arrows-plans-for-the-suicide-squad   GENERAL DC TV NEWS   ‘DC's Legends of Tomorrow': Ciara Renee to Depart (Date: 19 May 2016) From Deadline: According to Marc Guggenheim, when they were going through the list of characters they could bring back for season 2, bringing back Hawkman and Hawkgirl felt forced; after all, the idea behind Legends was to have a rotating team of characters.  Link: http://deadline.com/2016/05/dcs-legends-of-tomorrow-ciara-renee-departs-hawkgirl-1201754078/   The Flash: Season 2 Finale: The Man in the Iron Mask Speaks  (Date: 24 May 2016) From IGN: At the end of the interview with IGN, John Wesley Shipp, who plays Henry Allen/Jay Garrick, discusses how it is possible for him to be on Legends season 2 because the Justice Society was introduced at the end of Legends season 1.
