Sean and Andy are joined by Sean, prolific poster and blogger and short fiction writer, to talk about the changes he has seen over the last decade as an expat worker in both mainland China and Hong Kong. What shifts in politics, the economy and social life has he seen? What is the material basis for Xi Jinping's anti-corruption campaign? In what ways is the 'reform and opening up' period of 'market Stalinism' similar to Tony Blair's New Labour Britain? What does the imperial and post-imperial gaze on Hong Kong and the east more generally say about western precepts of China and Chinese capitalism? Is a new social explosion in China on its way or are we all, even in the west, lying flat for the foreseeable future? To support our work, become a patron today at www.patreon.com/theantifada Follow Sean on the shit app: https://x.com/nise_yoshimiCheck out his excellent blog: https://lateralthinkingtechnology.wordpress.com/

Mental health care and its radical possibilities reimagined in the context of its global development under capitalism. The contemporary world is oversaturated with psychiatric programs, methods, and reforms promising to address any number of "crises" in mental health care. When these fail, alternatives to the alternatives simply pile up and seem to lead nowhere. In an original and compelling account of radical experimentation in psychiatry, Warren traces a double movement in the global development of mental health services throughout the 20th century: a radical current pushing totalizing and idealistic visions of care to their practical limits and a reactionary one content with managing or eliminating chronically idle surplus populations. Moral treatment is read in light of the utopian socialist movement; the theory of communication in the French Institutional Psychotherapy of Félix Guattari is put into conversation with the Brazilian art therapy of Nise da Silveira; the Mexican anti-psychiatry movement's reflections on violence are thought together with theories of violence developed in Argentinian psychoanalysis and Frantz Fanon's anticolonial therapeutic practice; the social form of the Italian Democratic Psychiatry and Brazilian anti-institutional movements are contrasted with the anti-psychiatry factions of the 1960s-70s North American counterculture. Storming Bedlam: Madness, Mental Health, and Revolt (Common Notions, 2024) subverts the divisions between social and biological approaches to mental health or between psychiatry and anti-psychiatry. By exploring the history of psychiatry in the context of revolution, war, and economic development, Warren outlines a minor history of approaches to mental health care grounded in common struggles against conditions of scarcity, poverty, isolation, and exploitation. Sasha Warren is a writer based in Minneapolis. His experiences within the psychiatric system and commitment to radical politics led him to cofound the group Hearing Voices Twin Cities, which provides an alternative social space for individuals to discuss often stigmatized extreme experiences and network with one-another. Following the George Floyd Uprising in 2020, he founded the project Of Unsound Mind to trace the histories of psychiatry, social work, and public health's connections to policing, prisons, and various disciplinary and managerial technologies. In this episode, we hear from Le'Nise Brothers, a leading nutritionist and yoga teacher specialising in women's health, hormones and the menstrual cycle. Le'Nise develops nutritional programmes through her Eat Love Move consultancy to empower and educate women to understand their bodies and advocate for better healthcare. Le'Nise's first book, You Can Have A Better Period, was released in March 2022 and she also hosts the Period Story podcast, breaking taboos around menstrual health, hormones, perimenopause, menopause and beyond. In today's episode, Le'Nise shares her advice on working to the rhythms of your body and harnessing the power of the four stages of the menstrual cycle to benefit you both professionally and personally.Le'Nise's Advice: Recognise your tiredness when you are using sugar and caffeine throughout the day as a prop, and when you no longer feel excited about what you doRespect your body and its energy levels; don't feel guilty about taking breaks (these can be productive in terms of ideas)Be aware of your menstrual cycle and plan your diary accordingly; when you have your period this is a time for slowing down a little, being more analytical and insightfulWhen you are ovulating, you will be more energetic/confident/sociable; this is a time for negotiating and dealing with peopleBe disciplined about good sleep habits; your body needs to anticipate sleep and wind down for it. You may need a little more when having your periodPay attention to your diet. During a period you will need more iron which is a great source of energy so eat red meat if you can, and boost your Vitamin C intake. To counteract stress you need magnesium (in for example dark chocolate) sodium (in salt) and potassium (in bananas, coconut water)Monitor your menstrual cycle and note if it is being affected by external stresses; understanding this can help you guard against too much stressUnderstanding your cycle gives you power! If you'd like to contact Le'Nise, you can reach her at lenise@eatlovemove.com FF&M enables you to own your own PR.
Why has women's pain been normalised? In this week's episode of Another Phase, we're talking all about periods and hormones; Tamara is joined by Le'Nise Brothers, an expert in women's health, hormones and the menstrual cycle, registered nutritionist, mBANT, mCHNC, and yoga teacher. The subject of periods is still often considered taboo but that doesn't help anyone. During this conversation, Le'Nise explains the basics of the menstrual cycle, hormonal and energy fluctuations and most importantly, how you can support your hormones so that you can improve your periods (if you have them).
