Indian badminton is associated by Gen Z with the likes of Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu and Sat-Chi - the doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty. Veteran sports journalist Vijay Lokapally and his son Akshay have co-authored a well-researched English book, titled Net Flicks, that details Indian badminton's sojourn. The curious case of Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA). The DDCA is frequently in the news for the wrong reasons rather than the right ones. However, DDCA has nurtured some generational talents, who have gone on to represent Indian cricket at the highest level. The culture of Delhi Cricket is something as revered as Mumbai Cricket. Virender Sehwag, Ashish Nehra, Virat Kohli, Ishant Sharma and Rishabh Pant are some of the contemporary gems produced by Delhi. Why there's such an aura of Delhi cricket? Vijay Lokapally, a veteran sports journalist, who has worked for over four decades in Delhi, sheds light on the good, the bad and the ugly side of DDCA in this candid unmissable conversation with Amol Karhadkar, sports journalist, The Hindu, on Kattyawarchya Gappa...

Welcome to Episode 123 of Never on the Backfoot Podcast. Joining us on the podcast today is Vijay Lokapally. Sir is an Indian sports journalist and author. He started his career with the Patriot newspaper in 1981 and later joined The Hindu Group in 1986. Sir has been considered in the media as one of India's most respected writers on cricket and according to Sportskeeda, he is regarded as one of the most well-known sports journalists in India. This episode is all about delineating Virat Kohli and his form. His lean trot is now well into its third year which is extraordinary and has no parallel in the history of the game for a batter of such proven class and high achievement. Kohli is undoubtedly India's modern-day run machine with 23,693 international runs across formats at a 53.72 career average is the only batter with a 50-plus career average among the top run-getters in the world. For a long time, he averaged over 50 across all three formats, a feat which spoke volumes about just how prolific the former India skipper has been over the years. Even now, Virat averages above 50 in ODIs and T20Is. But since great players are judged more harshly when they go through dry spells thanks to how high they set the bar themselves, Virat has found himself in the eye of a storm of criticism. The podcast is also available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Anchor, Overcast and a lot of other platforms and spread the word. In 1971, India has tamed the British cricket lion in its den. It was a historic day when India beat England in the third and final Test by four wickets with 205 minutes to spare at the Kensington Oval, to clinch the series 1-0. One of the fulcrums of the Indian effort at the Oval was Farokh Engineer. Now 83, the veteran Indian cricketer looks back at that memorable victory with fondness as he joins Vijay Lokapally in this episode. Every individual has a journey of their own, unique in almost every aspect possible. But there is definitely a thing or two we can learn from greats or legends. This episode on Secrets of Storytellers is about one such person - Virat Kohli. He has not only been an inspiration to people associated with the game of cricket but his dedication, hard work, grit, and passion are so infectious and teach many lessons on how to become a better version of ourselves. It is the actions and incidents in one's life that show their real character, their real strength. We discuss with Vijay Lokapally, India's most famous cricket journalist, about: What makes Virat Kohli such a great player? What sets him apart from the others in the game? What were those few incidents which became the tipping point in Virat's career? And how has he led the team so wonderfully while ensuring he gives his best to the game as an individual. The discussion is based on Vijay Lokapally's book 'Driven', published by Bloomsbury. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/secrets-of-storytellers/support
