In this bittersweet season finale, Sarah Baillie and I come together to share some big news: the early wrap-up of Season 4. It's been a tough decision, but one that opens up exciting opportunities on the horizon for both of us. We peel back the curtain on the "why" behind this choice, exploring the joyous spaces it's creating for personal pursuits. For me, Wendy McCallum, it means dedicating more time to my passion for writing fiction and diving into my Business Building Bootcamp community for coaches and my podcast, The Coaching Edge. Meanwhile, Sarah is excited about immersing herself in patient care, family time, and generating innovative ideas for her coaching practice. We take a trip down memory lane, reminiscing about where we began in Season 1 (the "fake podcast") and marveling at the incredible journey of personal and professional growth since our estrogen-fueled conversations about nurturing and women's midlife. Join us for a heartfelt review of what we've cherished about Bite-Sized Balance, the joy it's brought us, the key things we've learned, and the bonds it's forged. As we bid adieu to Season 4, we embark on a hiatus, ready to focus on fresh endeavors and recharge our creative spirits. This isn't goodbye; it's a "see you soon" as we gear up for new beginnings. Thank you for being a part of this incredible journey—and stay tuned, we'll likely be back in some form or fashion again. We've got too much to say! Burnout sucks, no matter how you slice it. And the pandemic arguably made burnout its own pandemic as we tried to do it all—work from home, teach our kids at home, all the while living with uncertainty and stress. Some of us managed pandemic burnout—-and burnout in general—with behavior that actually exacerbates burnout, anxiety and depression. We drank more, we smoked more, we ate more. We certainly stressed more. And this became pretty much the norm, tunneling a heck of a stressed out neuropathway. But women had been doing this already, even prior to the pandemic. Trying to be the best mother, or best at our career, the best spouse, the best community member—and we put unrealistic expectations on ourselves all the while as we try to do it all. Wendy McCallum knows this story all too well. She's experienced 2 significant burnouts and knows what it is to try to treat burnout symptoms with alcohol. As a Burnout and Alcohol Coach & Wellness Expert who works with busy professional women, many in midlife, she also knows a lot about hormones and how hormones affect women in midlife and the impact that burnout—and overuse of alcohol—has on women's hormonal and emotional health. In this talk, she offers the science of burnout, alcohol use, and midlife hormones. More importantly, she offers gentle but directed wisdom around what we can do to prevent and treat burnout and live a happy, fulfilled life.Listen in for an insightful discussion, with practical steps you can take right now to prevent and treat burnout. Michael Amster, M.D., is the co-author (with Jake Eagle, LPC) of the new book The Power of Awe. Dr. Amster is a pain management specialist and awe researcher who teaches at the UC Berkeley Greater Good Science Center. He's also a long-time meditator and yoga instructor. He joins host Wendy McCallum to share what he and Jake discovered a few years ago about the amazing power of “microdosing awe” and how the simple practice they teach can impact almost every area of your physical, mental and emotional health. In this episode, Dr. Amster defines “awe” and distinguishes it from other emotions like gratitude, discusses the three types of awe and how we know we're experiencing them, and shares the quick 5 to 15 second A.W.E. Method that he developed with Jake Eagle at the start of the global pandemic. He goes on to explain the incredible results their formal awe research studies have generated and the science around why awe is such a special, powerful emotion when it comes to human wellbeing. Wendy shares her experiences practicing awe in the 24 hours after she read the book, including an interesting experience with a bathtub. They discuss the power of awe when it comes to preventing and recovering from burnout and the exciting future of research around the emotion. Wendy geeks out on science and Dr. Amster shares his hope that the future of awe includes a global social awakening. This is an incredibly interesting conversation for any busy person who's interested in improving their wellness, increasing joy, and preventing burnout. On this episode, I chat with Wendy McCallum, LLB, a Burnout and Alcohol Coach & Wellness Expert and the host of the Bite-Sized Balance Podcast. We talk about burnout, medical and workplace responses to alcohol, the anxiety-alcohol connection, the harm factor scale and that alcohol is the only drug we have to justify not taking. We also talk extensively about the joy of an alcohol-free life. Wendy teaches busy professionals (who are nearing burnout and often using alcohol to cope) how to reclaim time for themselves, reduce stress, build healthier habits, and increase their daily joy. No stranger to burnout, Wendy spent 12+ years working as a lawyer, then partner, in Calgary. As a busy litigator and mom of two young children, she struggled to find her “work-life” balance. In 2008, she left law to create a life she didn't need to escape from. Alcohol-free since January 2018, Wendy is also a Senior Certified Naked Mind Alcohol Coach. You can find out more about Wendy at www.wendymccallum.com and follow her at @beatburnoutandbooze on Instagram.
When's the last time you had a girl's night out and alcohol wasn't part of the scene? When's the last time you got together with family or friends for a BBQ or reunion and didn't feel like you needed a few glasses of wine to get through it or to relax? Alcohol is a prominent part of being social (kind of like diet talk is). It can take the social anxiety edginess off. And it's normalized especially in mom culture and midlife. But what do you do when you start noticing that alcohol isn't serving you as well anymore? When you notice that its effects trigger more perimenopause symptoms like hot flashes and meno-moods? How are you going to get through your next social event without your class of wine? Wendy McCallum, LLB, is a burnout and alcohol coach and wellness expert. A fellow podcaster and host of the Bite-Sized Balance Podcast, Wendy teaches busy professionals (who are nearing burnout and often using alcohol to cope) how to reclaim time for themselves, reduce stress, build healthier habits, and increase their daily joy. In our conversation, Wendy talks about her journey from being a partner in a large law firm to becoming a burnout and alcohol coach. We dive into how burnout in midlife can feel like a collision of stress, overwhelm, hormonal imbalance, and uncertainty. And what you can do to help calm the chaos without using alcohol to cope. Finally, Wendy shares her advice for women in midlife who have relied on alcohol as a part of social connections for years, and how they can still be the life of the party (and remember it tomorrow) without relying on alcohol. Burnout! It's a term we hear A LOT these days, but how many of us know what the word is actually pointing to and how many of us may have experienced it without even knowing what was going on? If you've ever used alcohol to manage stress and anxiety then this podcast is a must! Not only will you learn the truth about burnout and learn the signs that you might be experiencing it, but you'll get an awesome insight into how to truly be with yourself too!
If you're a woman in your 40s you're likely both moving into perimenopause hormonally and also navigating one of the busiest times of your life. If you're also using alcohol to ease the symptoms of burnout and perimenopause the combination can lead to a vicious cycle of heightened anxiety and physical and emotional exhaustion. You might notice that the symptoms of perimenopause are similar to those of alcohol withdrawal and burnout. In fact, alcohol can intensify the more severe symptoms of anxiety and depression experienced in perimenopause. Drinking alcohol also disturbs sleep and women who drink daily are much more likely to experience hot flashes and night sweats. The good news is that if you're experiencing perimenopause symptoms you're not alone and you can tap into better ways to cope than drinking through it. My guest today is Wendy McCallum, LLB. Wendy is a Burnout and Alcohol Coach & Wellness Expert and the host of the Bite-Sized Balance Podcast. She's here to share the many different paths to recovery from burnout, recovery from alcohol and for moving through perimenopause with more ease and less stress. Wendy McCallum is a burnout and balance coach, author, and speaker. In this conversation, she recounts her own struggles dealing with a high-stress lifestyle in the past, as well as the common signs and symptoms of burnout. She offers practical tools that anyone can use to both recover from burnout and prevent it from happening again in the future. She talks about unhealthy coping mechanisms such as alcohol, food, and social media and how we can learn to rely less on these crutches and become more present. Wendy also gives her thoughts on the unique challenges that many of us experienced in 2020 and continue to face in 2021. One of her observations at the tail-end of the pandemic has been the emergence of a “third shift” in the lives of working professionals. If our “first shift” represents our actual career and our “second shift” refers to the people under our care—whether our children or aging parents—our new “third shift” is helping to orchestrate or manage schooling from home. This, of course, is on top of the overall anxiety all of us have felt in the past year-and-a-half. The pandemic and the resulting lockdowns have led to a significantly higher stress load on the average human being. Burnout is one of the symptoms of this stress. Whether one came into 2020 physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy, or already overworked, almost everybody has had to deal with exhaustion. (On the other hand, a very small minority—mainly business owners and employers—have found opportunities to become flexible and even more productive in their work.) Wendy reflects on her own experience with burnout and how she learned to create a life that she no longer needed to escape from. But I do want to say that the line between burnout and something like postpartum depression can be a little grey, so if you're feeling like maybe this could be something more then you should absolutely make an appointment with your doctor to discuss (or better yet, if you're not sure, check on it anyway!). October is World Menopause Awareness Month and the "Meno Whisperer", Dr. Sarah Baillie, is BACK! In Part 2 of this two-part conversation, host Wendy McCallum and Sarah really dig into why awareness around perimenopause and menopause is so low for most women, and what the incredible (but rarely-discussed!) gifts in this life transition can be if we just open ourselves up to them. They also discuss the common symptoms of perimenopause and menopause, the range of options available to women for better hormonal and symptom management, and the most important first step in taking back some power -- slowing down and getting aware of what they are experiencing (physically, mentally and emotionally) and what they are doing (or not doing) to take meaningful care of themselves as they go through it. If you missed Part 1, it's in Episode 4!
