Dr. Michael Amster | Mindfulness Researcher | Author | Interventional Pain Management Specialist Intro: When was the last time you felt a true sense of awe? Perhaps it was while gazing at a breathtaking landscape, watching a mesmerizing sunset, or savoring a moment of pure wonder. These extraordinary scenes often inspire awe, yet as our guest, Dr. Michael Amster, co-author of The Power of Awe, explains, awe isn't limited to grand spectacles or rare events. It's something we can experience every day—in the warmth of sunlight, a kind gesture, or even the intricate details of a simple leaf. And during this podcast, Dr. Amster discusses how awe is accessible to us all and can have dramatically powerful, positive impacts on our lives. These moments of everyday awe do more than create beautiful memories; they have a profound impact on our mindset, especially when it comes to money. When we allow ourselves to experience awe, we see how "rich" life can be in the truest sense. We begin to rely less on external “things” to make us happy, knowing that they often bring only fleeting satisfaction. Instead, awe-inspired moments lead us to find fulfillment in experiences, connections, and simple joys. In this way, awe shifts us from seeking happiness through material accumulation to cultivating a lasting sense of inner wealth. BIO: Michael Amster, MD, is a physician and awe researcher, writer, and teacher at the UC Berkeley Greater Good Science Center. He splits his time between clinical work, research on awe, teaching mindfulness, and leading awe-inspiring retreats around the world. Highlights: Practicing awe can lead to a more fulfilling life. Awe connects us to our intuition and self. Experiencing awe can slow us down and enhance our presence. Awe can be found in ordinary moments, not just extraordinary ones. The AWE method is a simple practice to cultivate awe. Awe has significant psychological and social benefits. Awe can expand our identity beyond material possessions. Experiencing awe can change our perception of time. Awe is contagious and can inspire generosity in others. Links: The Power of Awe Book: CLICK HERE Dr. Michael Amster LinkedIn: CLICK HERE

Dr. Amster introduces the AWE method, a technique for "micro-dosing" mindfulness developed during his own experience with burnout. The AWE method involves finding moments of awe in everyday experiences through three steps: Attention, Wait, and Exhale/Expand. Research on the AWE method during the COVID-19 pandemic showed significant reductions in depression, anxiety, and loneliness among participants. Dr. Amster explains the physiological benefits of experiencing awe, including lowered inflammation in the body. The emotion of awe is discussed as a way to connect people to something greater than themselves, leading to increased generosity, compassion, and open-mindedness. Dr. Amster shares personal stories of how the AWE practice has impacted people's lives, including applications in chronic pain management and cancer treatment support. The interview concludes with a passage from Dr. Amster's book "The Power of Awe" and a guided AWE practice for listeners.

Michael Amster, MD is a physician and awe researcher and teacher at the UC Berkeley Greater Good Science Center. With twenty years as a pain management specialist, he is currently the founding director of the pain management department at Santa Cruz Community Health. He shares his journey of discovering awe through mindfulness and meditation practices. Michael explains the AWE method, which stands for Attention, Wait, and Expand, and how it can be used to experience awe in everyday moments. In this conversation, we actually get to experience it first-hand and if you are someone who never has time to breathe or meditate, this is one of the shortest AND most effective practices that we have both integrated into our lives.Michael also discusses the different levels of consciousness, the markers of each, and how our bodies physiologically change between each state. Most of us live and function from “safety consciousness,” which is characterized by anxiety, worry and doubt. Just by practicing the AWE method even once a day can help you access the benefits of the other states of consciousness - heart and spacious consciousness.By accessing the energetic state of awe in just a few short breaths, we can experience improved mental, emotional, and physical health. This dialogue allows you to consider that what you really desire from the external world is actually an altered internal state, which is available to you right in this moment.Highlights:-Awe is an emotional experience in which we sense being in the presence of something that transcends our normal perception of the world.-Awe has the power to lower inflammation, reduce depression and anxiety, and improve overall health. Accessing heart and awe consciousness can enhance our daily lives and improve our relationships, work, and overall well-being.-Shifting from safety consciousness to a state of awe and spaciousness can bring about positive changes in our lives.-Awe is contagious and can inspire awe in others when shared.-Awe is accessible in everyday experiences and can be practiced with the Awe Method.-Practicing awe can lead to a heightened shift in consciousness and contribute to positive change in the world.Timestamps:03:05 Discovering the A.W.E. Today's episode of The Mindful Minute is the second installment of a 2-part series dedicated to the emotion of awe.In this conversation, Jake Eagle, co-author of 'The Power of Awe', and I discuss the concept of 'awe' and its significance in handling existential anxiety and conquering stress. What I love about listening to these two discussions on awe is that you hear from someone who loves meditation and is ‘good' at it {Dr. Michael Amster} and you hear from someone who loves meditation but struggles with it {Jake Eagle}. Together, I think we get a well-rounded look at the benefits in incorporating the A.W.E micro-mindfulness practice regardless of whether you also do a full sit-down meditation or not. Jake details the A.W.E. practice and he also guides a powerful meditation he developed to shift through different levels of consciousness (Safety, Heart, and Spacious consciousness). He explains how making these shifts several times a day can reset our nervous system, creating significant positive impacts. Jake was a licensed mental health counselor for the past twenty-seven years, and now practices as a meta-therapist, exploring what comes after therapy. Although Jake recognizes the value of therapy, he also recognizes the limitations, and has developed a method that accelerates and simplifies the process of personal growth. Michael Amster joins me to tell his story of the discovery of A.W.E. In May of 2020, at the height of the pandemic, two trial groups embarked on a study through UC Berkeley to test a new method for "micro-dosing-mindfulness." One group was comprised of frontline wrokers; and the other consisted of patients at a local medical center, as well as their family and friends who wished to participate. Almost immediately both groups reported significant improvement in symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, and chronic pain.  Michael tells us his story and how we can put the practice of A.W.E, short for; Wait, Exhale and Expand into a daily practice. I start with an analogy; The going thought is an adult should drink about a half gallon of water per day. But if you drink it all at once first thing in the morning, you'll feel bloated, you'll pee most of it out, and if you don't have anymore the rest of the day you'll be completely dehydrated by evening. You need to be drinking water throughout the day to stay well and hydrated. Now think of meditating, which at the core is an attempt to be present, center yourself, and bring about positive feelings. If you do your 5 minutes or 55 minutes in the morning, and then go about the grind for the rest of the day, you'll end up depleted. Instead, or in addition to this, new research shows the vast benefit of taking just 5 or 15 seconds here and there throughout the day, to “microdose mindfulness.” This is more than just thinking of something you're grateful for, but to stop and focus on something positive and really feel it, whether it's something you can actually see like a mountain or a flower, or it's something you close your eyes to envision. My guest is Jake Eagle, who along with Michael Amster recently released their book, THE POWER OF AWE: Overcome Burnout & Anxiety, Ease Chronic Pain, Find Clarity & Purpose—In Less Than 1 Minute Per Day, where they explain the why and how of this method for a five to fifteen-second, three-step process for “micro-dosing mindfulness,” where they discovered a clinically proven way to reduce inflammation, stress, loneliness, and burnout while improving overall well-being. Just hours before our recording, Jake sent me a scientific report that published earlier that morning. But along with this focus on awe and microdosing mindfulness, I also wanted Jake on the show because this was his response to my request to have him on the show - “I am 67, semi-retired, and wrestling with the reality that my old values no longer fit this stage of my life. I find semi-retirement to be quite a challenge and have not yet sorted myself out. I imagine a conversation with me may be potentially unsettling and raise more questions than it answers. Also, after having been a therapist for thirty years, I'm rather skeptical about many forms of therapy, because when I look at how people are doing—overall—I don't think the trajectory is very positive.” Stay tuned for a very deep and candid conversation. Anxiety is generally thought of something to avoid—especially when we catastrophize—you know that thing our brain does when we imagine worst-case scenarios. For most of us, these scenarios generally have no real value and the images rendered in our minds can be horribly frightening and even toxic. It calls to mind a great quote from Mark Twain who said, “I've lived through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened.”  Yet, consider this: can anxiety at times act as a signal for us to change course or do something different? In such moments, what if we were able to listen to what our anxiety was telling us? My guest, Dr. Kirk J. Schneider (https://kirkjschneider.com/about/) is one of today's most prominent existential psychologists in the world. You may ask, “What is existential psychology?” Glad you did! According to the American Psychological Association, an existential psychological approach looks at “the subjective meaning of human experience, the uniqueness of the individual, and personal responsibility reflected in choice.”    And, as you'll hear, Kirk's work—including his latest book, is all about that. It examines the mystery of life, the anxiety incurred by that mystery, and how to listen to it and find greater meaning. His book, Life Enhancing Anxiety looks at these phenomena and helps us cultivate tools to find more meaning in our lives. SuperPsyched guest, Dr. Michael Amster, who talked on the topic of awe, raved about the book saying, “we need this brilliant book to open a new door to embracing (and engaging with) Life-Enhancing Anxiety.” And Kirkus Reviews said, “…Readers grappling with standard concepts of anxiety will find plenty of food for thought in Schneider's vision."  So, listen in as Kirk and I talk about life-enhancing anxiety. Does your anxiety make mindfulness and meditation feel impossible?! I get it! I actually didn't have a consistent meditation practice like I do now until I had eliminated my generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder. Only then was I able to really get into meditation. The benefits of mindfulness and meditation are well-documented at this point, no one can argue that, but it's not accessible to everyone. If you could realize the stress-reducing and heart-opening benefits of mindfulness with a practice that takes less than 1 minute per day, would you practice more often? Neuroscience has shown that when it comes to changing our brains, consistency is more important than the duration of our practice. But it's not always easy to fit in a meditation daily. Microdosing mindfulness might be the solution we need to practice more often, and with less resistance.   In this episode, Sean Fargo speaks with Jake Eagle, co-author of The Power of Awe: Overcome Burnout & Anxiety, Ease Chronic Pain, Find Clarity & Purpose - In Less Than 1 Minute Per Day. Think back to a moment when you were completely blown away by something - maybe it was the sight of a stunning sunset or the feeling of standing at the top of a mountain. The truth is, we're always surrounded by nature's magic. At any moment, we could experience wonder and awe, but most of us get so caught up in our lives that we don't even acknowledge the moment. But here's the thing: experiencing awe actually has a whole lot of benefits, like increasing your creativity and your sense of connection to others. It even has the power to transform a society. What if I told you that there was an exercise that anyone can do in just 15 seconds three times a day that, when researched, showed a decrease depression by as much as 35%, a decrease anxiety by up to 20%, and a substantial decrease physical pain? You might ask about side effects of the exercise, and I would too. It seems that the major side effect is this: a significant increase your quality of life. Would you be interested in knowing more? I know I would and I'm guessing you would too. Since you've seen the title of this episode, you've probably guessed I'm talking about awe. The dictionary describes awe as "a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder." The way I'm describing it now, simply put, is something that makes you say, WOW or WHOA, like, when your breath is taken away after seeing something amazing. And, if you become a practitioner of awe, you can find it in more ordinary things like appreciating the way your body responds to a warm shower, seeing something on TV or YouTube that inspires you, or looking at an image of the human heart recognizing that it supports you through life whether you're awake or asleep. My guest, physician Dr. Michael Amster (https://thepowerofawe.com/about/) co-authored a book with Jake Eagle called The Power of Awe: Overcome Burnout & Anxiety, Ease Chronic Pain, Find Clarity & Purpose—In Less Than 1 Minute Per Day. I loved the book and I'm not alone. SuperPsyched guest, Dr. Judson Brewer describes it perfectly as “A powerful, practical, science-backed book that shows us how finding awe everywhere, every day is essential to our health and well-being.” So, listen in as Michael and I delve into the Power of Awe and what it can do for you. If you find it hard to meditate, or make time for it, then you're going to ABSOLUTELY love this chat today.Today I am joined by Michael Amster, a physician and faculty member at the Touro School of Medicine. He has twenty years of experience as a pain management specialist, been a student of meditation for over thirty years and is a certified yoga teacher. Today we dive into a recent discovery, something that is going to change the way you look at mindfulness for 2023 and beyond. Michael is going to explain the power of the A.W.E method including the science that backs it up, the three levels of consciousness, and how to achieve powerful results for both our physical and mental health in under 1 minute a day.A.W.E's initiationAt the height of the pandemic, two trial groups embarked on a study through UC Berkeley to test a new method for “micro-dosing mindfulness.” One group was comprised of frontline healthcare workers; the other consisted of patients at a local medical center, as well as any of their friends and family who wished to participate. Almost immediately, both groups reported significant improvement in symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, and chronic pain—results that bore out over the course of the study and beyond. Jake Eagle, LPC and Michael Amster, MD, knew that they were on to something.(00:00) Introduction of Guest(04:34) Micro-dosing Mindfulness(06:50) Study Results(08:30) A.W.E introduced(12:46) Saving time and practicing Mindfulness(14:35) Safety Consciousness(17:27) How to start practicing(23:32) The Science of A.W.E(26:44) How to know when you're experiencing A.W.E(33:00) Links & ResourcesYou can connect with the movement on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and TikTok.Share this episode with your mum, sister or a friend if you know they'll love it too!Thanking our partner sponsor for this episode SUNSAMA, an online planner tool which has been game changing in my organisation and focus. Feel Good From Within with Yvette Le Blowitz - #SPAITGIRL Podcast EP.200 - The Power of Awe w/Jake Eagle, LPC, Therapist, co-author  Overcome Burnout & Anxiety - Ease Chronic Pain - Find Clarity & Purpose in Less Than 1 Minute Per Day Research has proven that mindfulness improves well-being and reduces stress, anxiety and pain. But for some, the practice itself feels challenging and inaccessible. That's where The A.W.E. Method comes in. In The Power of Awe, therapist Jake Eagle and chronic pain specialist Michael Amster, MD, share their extraordinary yet simple mindfulness practice that turns ordinary moments into awe-inducing experiences. Helping you effortlessly achieve a heightened state of consciousness usually reserved for seasoned practitioners of mindfulness - all within a matter of seconds. The A.W.E Method quickly transports us into awe, an incredibly powerful emotion that produces wonderment and a heightened state of consciousness along with some remarkable changes in the mind and body that can improve health and wellness. When was the last time you were truly in awe? perhaps it was when you went for a walk on beach, watching a sunset - maybe you felt goosebumps or you lost your sense of time. Unbeknownst to you, some pretty incredible things were happening inside your body. Your fight-flight-freeze response became less active and activity decreased in your brain's default mode network, which is associated with both chronic pain and anxiety. Your interleukin-6 levels decreased, which can reduce chronic inflammation and lower your risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and depression. Being in awe can be beneficial to both your mind and body and now the AWE method provides a shortcut to all these benefits and is accessible to anyone, anywhere. ATTENTION (give your full focus to something), WAIT (take a deep breath and appreciate that thing), EXHALE and EXPAND (as you exhale slowly, allow your feelings to expand and grow). 5-15 seconds, two or three times a day - that's all it takes. Yvette Le Blowitz Podcast Host talks with Jake Eagle, LPC co-author of  The Power of Awe to find out how we can practice AWE to improve our relationships, alleviate existential anxiety and manage chronic pain.
