At this week's Round Table, Jack, Kenisha, and Maya spoke with veteran educator Kent Lenci, author of Learning To Depolarize: Helping Students and Teachers Reach Across Lines of Disagreement. Kent framed for us that political polarization feels acute because of the negative connotation surrounding this concept. However, his goal is to help educators navigate the complexities of polarization in order to prepare today's students to face tomorrow's polarization. Through doing so, youth can be encouraged and supported in facing the challenges of working across lines of disagreement. We had lots of questions for him: What does polarization look like in educational settings? What WORKS in defusing polarization? What HELPS build bridges against lines of disagreement? We discussed our concerns that too often, education is being used as either a political weapon or a political tool rather than a system to serve people as the bipolar nature of our political divide has grown bigger and more intense. Too often, those who try to encourage viewpoint diversity and to reach out to people we disagree with are met with skepticism, mistrust, and pushback. In the face of threat, Kent noted that rational thinking becomes disabled as individuals develop a “fight-or-flight mechanism” fearing an attack on a crucial part of their identity. It doesn't have to be this way! Kent inspired us to try to look at things and people in the most charitable light and to embrace perspectives all across the spectrum in relation to issues facing our world today. This is your Brain on Anxiety What Happens and What Helps by Faith Harper
Postpartum physical therapy can be a great way to restore function and strength in your core and pelvic floor muscles. Giving birth places a strain on your body and it is no surprise that many postpartum people experience pelvic pain and discomfort for weeks to months after delivery. Even after the typical 8 week recovery time, many women may require more time or a pelvic floor workout plan to help get them back on their feet, especially women who delivered via C-section. Although you may never look how you did before your pregnancy, physical therapy post pregnancy can help relieve symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse, diastasis recti, and other postpartum symptoms. Physical Therapy After Pregnancy Physical therapy for pregnancy and after pregnancy can help strengthen and restore pelvic floor muscle and joint function, increase body awareness, and also provide education and instruction on how to modify your daily activities to serve you in your recovery. Some of the primary physical therapy options available include: Pelvic girdle and lumbar spine realignmentPrenatal tissue and joint mobilizationPostpartum external and internal tissue, joint, scar, and visceral movement therapyStrength training for pelvic floor musclesPelvic floor stabilization and core strength exercisesProper posture, postural strengthening for back painDiastasis recti rehabilitationBody mechanics training and educationAt home strategies and education for self-care How Do You Know if You Need Pelvic Floor Therapy? The two most common conditions many postpartum people face are diastasis recti and pelvic organ prolapse. Pregnancy and delivery create an imbalance of muscles and ligament tension. This can leave the pelvic floor and abdominals unsupported potentially leading to prolapse or DRA. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you may need to consider physical therapy or movement therapy: ConstipationUrinary incontinenceFecal incontinencePain during intercourseVaginal painRectal painLow back painPelvic painDiastasis Recti – separation of the abdominal musclesPelvic organ prolapsePubic bone painPelvic girdle pain A physical therapist can help you recover from many of these symptoms with the education and therapy options mentioned above. If your physical therapist is specially trained to treat pelvic floor issues, they can help significantly reduce the painful symptoms you may be experiencing while also strengthening your core and pelvic floor muscles. What Helps with Postpartum Pain? Physical therapy can be a great way to help women recover from postpartum issues. However, not all exercise routines or core training workouts are created equal. Restoring your body’s function is not something to do quickly or forcefully. Exercise is important, but resting and pacing yourself are far more vital to your recovery than rushing it. Postpartum recovery requires a specific re-training of your body to regain strength and integrity. Long-term functionality is better than getting slim fast. Exercise As you begin to exercise postpartum, it is important that your focus be on the major muscle groups affected by your delivery. Short spurts of slow, simple stretches and yoga poses are a great place to begin. Shoot for around 10 to 20 minutes a day of light exercise and stretching. Many exercises can be done during your recovery, but it’s important that you don’t overexert yourself before the 8 week mark is up (and for some women, even longer). As you continue to regain strength and functionality, you can gradually increase your workout time and intensity. Rest If I could have a dollar for every person who wished they had rested more in order to spare themselves injury. Rest is so important for healing your body postpartum and ensuring that you do not damage your core and your pelvic floor. We recommend getting back into exercise at least 8 weeks postpartum, but even then, easing into it is key.
"You can't force yourself to change... I tried forcing myself out of my depression for two years. It wasn't until I looked at healing the WOUND that things started to change." We had to better understand the powerful mind/body connection, our own individualized needs, and taking a look at where we feel shame and why. In this podcast, we talk about some of the ways you can heal your trauma. Including our successes in the matter, we tell you about some of what we had to go through first. We know that the path to healing isn't an easy one, but we found tools that make this process simpler than it's ever been before. And we want you to have those, too.
#109 The Meal I Eat Every Day & How To Make It It’s been 4 years and I’m still not bored. Sure, I add in some variety here and there, but this meal is a staple of my day, nearly every day. Many of us think in order to eat healthy, we must have a plethora of recipes, and spend lots of money on expensive and fancy ingredients. What I found very quickly is that that is just not sustainable. In this episode, I share with you exactly what my boyfriend and I eat each day, and how we cook it! You don’t have to eat this meal every day like I do, and you don’t have to eat it at all if you don’t want to. But, I encourage you to simplify your healthy eating attempts by focusing on simply adding more cooked vegetables to your daily meals. And if you feel ambitious, try this recipe out, make it your own, and adjust from there! Enjoy! Resilience is a theme for this month and today we are looking at what Emotional Resilience is. In my newsletter I share some information about me that will explain why I've chosen to focus on resilience. You can sign up HERE. I want to share with you what I've done to keep going when challenges come our way or we have tough times. How do we keep going and be resilient? What is Emotional Resilience? It's about our ability to deal with situations in life, how easily we can bounce back. Clients come to me when they've "had it up to here" or "can't take any more". That means your emotional levels are full up. I talk about an emotional bucket and how stress, anxiety, pressure can build up. They can come from self-doubt, shame, embarrassment too. It might be about the way we are treated or how we talk to ourselves. It can affect our ability to cope. I explain how this can affect me personally on the podcast. This bucket of negativity can sometimes fill up quickly or take quite a while. The speed at which your bucket fills up, is not the issue, my concern is how full it is, and what we can do about it. We need to be able to balance our emotions with both positive and negative feelings and circumstances. How Do We Know if Our Emotional Bucket is Full? It's much more than overwhelm. When your bucket is full, we feel it all the time. Or, it can take a tiny thing to tip us over the edge. Anger bursts out. Tears overflow. If you often feel worried or nervous, frustrated, sad, irritable, angry, scared, upset, overwhelmed, inadequate or even wanting to escape, then it’s likely that your emotional bucket is overflowing. What's a Good Balance? If your bucket is too empty, then that’s not going to be great either. If this is the case then you might feel low, fed up, tired all the time, bored, negative, nervous, anxious or even depressed. An empty bucket can also drain those around you too. (sorry for all the doom and gloom - things can get better - honest!!) We need our buckets to be somewhere in the middle, just right. That way we can be happier, more comfortable about ourselves, staff, colleagues, clients. We can think more clearly, make better decisions and generally enjoy life more. What Helps to Maintain Emotional Resilience? We need to make sure we've got enough good things going on in our lives to be able have the balance. To have positive times and situations, opportunities that are fun and good for us. Also to have tools in our toolkit that we can use to reset the balance of those emotions. 11.0m I talk about one particular thing that really makes me smile! Spend some time over the course of a week, noticing what lifts you up, brightens your day. What small things are in your life that help you feel good. What drags you down and adds to negativity? Notice those. Then come back over the next few weeks and listen to future episodes where I dive deeper and give more information on resilience and tools you can use to develop your emotional resilience. If you want to talk about working with me to help this, then book a call or look at how to work with me. If you'd like some live coaching or to ask a question that you'd like to be mentioned on the blog or podcast, drop me a question HERE.

She goes into detail on four main strategies for dealing with anxiety: behavioral activation, grounding, stress management response, and hypnotherapy. Faith also discusses how to approach emotions with neutrality and curiosity. She explains how labeling, fighting, or holding onto emotions intensifies and prolongs them. Chris then talks about expressing and repressing emotions, and Faith expands on the differences in emotional vulnerability between men and women. We ask her how a man can evolve from unawareness to a point where he’s aligned with his own values and sense of integrity. Faith explains how to approach ourselves with self-compassion. She also talks about taking responsibility for our reactions and responses to others. She gives some examples of how to express emotions in different situations. Next, Faith discusses how people change the dynamics of relationships when they change, and why people are often resistant to change. She goes into detail on how anxiety affects our minds and bodies, and references Robert Sapolsky's "Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers." She also explains why depression and anxiety are two ends of the same cord. Faith then expands on how emotions are stored in the body and brain. She describes what EAM memories are, how they're created, and how they're activated. Faith talks about pendulating emotions, titrating responses, and figuring out where we feel emotions in our bodies. She explains how somatics and mindful movement practices such as yoga and qigong help with building awareness of our bodies and responses, as well as trauma recovery. Faith goes into more detail on what somatic therapy is and how it works. She references Peter Levine's books, including "Waking the Tiger," and David Emerson's work with trauma sensitive yoga. Next, Faith explains what fascia is, how accupunture activates it, and how fascia connects to different nerves. She also talks about neurofeedback, which we discuss more in depth on our podcast with Dr. Andrew Hill. She goes on to explain how depression affects our minds and bodies, and refences her new book: "This is Your Brain on Depression." Faith offers some strategies for overcoming depression, and emphasizes the importance of self-care. Faith then discusses how nutrition and physical health affects the brain. She talks about common vitamin and nutrient deficiencies, and shares her insights on different diets, including keto, paleo, and vegan. She also offers practical advice on choosing the right diet. Faith then explains why movement is so important, and goes into more detail on qigong. She describes what happens in the body physiologically that causes us to feel better when we move and exercise. She references Dr. Ray Long's books on yoga. Finally, Faith talks about the benefits of mindfulness, and offers practical tips for meditating. She also shares her insights and advice for dealing with difficult people and situations, and references another new book she has coming out: "Coping Skills." Faith then discusses the relationship between healing and connection, as well as what makes for great connection. She explains how she models healthy relationships in her therapy practice.
